2 hours later…
07:11
Back from Roryland.
hey hi
07:30
Morning all
@CodesInChaos you were in Roryland?!
Aberdeen
@CodesInChaos ahh not been up that way in a while. I was actually out of Roryland at the weekend, down in York
salut
@CodesInChaos good weekend for it. Aberdeen can be lovely when it is warm and sunny, but it really sucks when dreich and dreary
@Flyk mornin'
@RoryAlsop Was going to tell you I saw a Vulcan flying by yesterday when I was in Richmond..
07:40
@Flyk Bonjour :)
As a left handed individual I am appreciative of the confirmation buttons being on the left of the screen in Windows Phone 10
but other than that it's horrible and I hate it
Confirmation on the left?
That's unusual
not really, confirmation is always on the left in windows land
so, what's the most hilarious method of destroying a modern smartphone
what happens if you microwave one?
I did play a lot of Minesweeper this weekend, though
@Flyk sparks I'd imagine!
@RоryMcCune noice!
@Flyk always sparks. Sometimes magic smoke
07:55
50
Q: Is it a scam if the person only wants to deposit into my account, not make a withdrawal?

donnaA man in west coast Austria wants to deposit money into my account. I'm in Alabama I had to get a online account. I did that but he says his bank manger needs all this information: DOB SSN online access username online access password security question and answer bank name...

@RоryMcCune You thinking of heading to Ayr/Prestwick for the Prestwick Air Show next month. Last Vulcan flight...
@RoryAlsop ohh that's a possible, when abouts is it?
@Flyk It would get really hot, then the lithium in the battery would get very mad and burst into flames.
flames you say?
Yes, the variety that cannot be extinguished with water alone.
07:59
ooOOOooo
that's my favorite kind
Lithium chemical fires are a little nasty.
@RоryMcCune Saturday Sept 5th for the air show (free from Ayr front green) and 6th for airfield (tickets only - visit the planes, speak to pilots etc)
As soon as you extinguish it by removing all the oxygen with c02 or halon or something, it will reignite on contact with oxygen
@DavidFreitag that sounds like fun, I will use outdoor heating rather than indoor heating
@RoryAlsop that might work, reckon I'm free that weekend, will go put a reminder in my calendar while I remember :)
08:03
@Flyk TBH, no heating necessary. Just puncture a lithium battery and let the fun ensue.
Hey guys, hope you're keeping well
recent question about Ransomware made me wonder...
what backup solutions are there that are secure against ransomware?
@paj28 erm
surely any offline or otherwise unconnected to the infected machine storage, like any other threat
@paj28 yeah I think that's kind of interesting. At base I'd say it's likely to depend on what ones the ransomeware is aware of. i.e. if it doesn't know about it, it can't wipe/encrypt it
also ones that store many versions of files are more resistant to it
@Flyk - offline is all well and good, but you need to connect the offline device to do a backup
@DavidFreitag I need to know more chemistry, keep talking
08:06
Personally, I do backups nightly, to a VM in the cloud, using Duplicati
The creds I give to Duplicati could be used to wipe my remote backup
then obviously the solution is to not get infected
perhaps you should find the weakness in your security and remove it
usually users
I guess in theory I could have an "append only" setup - but I don't actually know how to do that
@paj28 so ones that present something like an SMB interface will be more vulnerable as they're easier for standard code to wipe.
@paj28 append only without something like Write-Once media will always be a software construct which could be broken, so it'd depend on the attacker knowing about how to do it
the problem is you're assuming that anything is "secure"
once you get your head around that, everything else is much easier
@Flyk Lithium is one of many alkali elements that reacts violently with water (I meant water when I said oxygen before). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alkali_metal
08:08
@RоryMcCune - I was thinking if the append-only was enforced by my VM in the cloud, it would be pretty secure
@Flyk - exactly, nothing is perfectly secure, so we have layers. You try not to get infected. You have backups in case you do.
@paj28 yeah different control plane would be unlikely that anything other than a targeted manual attack would take account of that
Ok, I'm gonna have a look round see if I can find anything online
If I feel keen I might write a blog post on "How to configure Duplicate to defend against Ransomware"
Sodium in a sealed container is actually a great way to protect something.
ah, we achieved the lmgtfy effect within 10 lines - high 5 everyone
Open it without first filling the container with oil and you get a very aggressive (almost-)inextinguishable fire in your face.
08:11
Well, if you can suggest suitable search terms, hit me up
I love a bit of odd chat behaviour
@paj28 good call there's a lack of good anti-ransomware advice
On a blog-related note had my most successful post (if we go by twitter activity) with my Docker one
got like 40'ish fav's / RTs after Docker put it on their feed
so the performance of the wifi in this hotel is detrimental to my health
so I'm going back to sleep instead
@RоryMcCune nice
@Flyk The mistake that most people make is forgetting this. Next time bring a router with you when you travel.
08:18
not seen that one... gonna have a look now
@paj28 raesene.github.io/blog/2015/07/23/… was the post, was about using Docker for Security testing. I think there's definitely some advantages to using containers for that kind of stuff
Yeah, interesting, and good to hear you got some buzz on twitter
@Flyk I had a weekend in a strange land where mobile phones could actually load web pages and things.. this 4G thing amazing
For now I'm happy with VMs and snapshots, but will bear it in mind
@RоryMcCune - what's the internet like in your neck of the woods?
BCP is for business continuity programme?
Would have used "Plan" instead
08:20
@DavidFreitag no it's my insistence on running the browser that connects to chat on a machine that's on the other side of the planet
self inflicted
@paj28 we have not terrible service (8M down 1M up) by bonding 2 ADSL lines together but it's seriously expensive (although the ISP is very good). Mobile phone coverage is 2G and only Vodafone..
@paj28 theoretically we may get FTTC next year some time
not too bad
@Flyk Well, that certainly does not help.
we recently got a microwave link here - Wave Internet
went up from 2.5/0.5 to 12/4
it's only £30 a month too
@paj28 microwave.. interesting! I've used satellite stuff (we have it as a backup) but not seen Microwave used for consumer stuff before, cool..
08:23
@paj28 I pay $65/mo for 150mb/s up 25mb/s down.
@DavidFreitag - bring that to my area please!
You should petition Google to bring a fiber link to your doorstep.
where do I sign?
@DavidFreitag you have more upload than download
Crap I got that backwards somehow
I should go to sleep.
08:27
s'ok I just spent 30 seconds trying to edit a sentence that for some reason I can't
and my face is leaking, definitely time for sleep
You should probably get that checked out.
nothing to check, I always get watery eyes when fighting to remain awake
My eyes get blurry and I need to blink frequently.
08:45
@RоryMcCune I bet you get it before we do
@RoryAlsop that would be ridiculous, you need to get a Murieston's residents accoc. together to lobby the council to put pressure on BT
take hostages
I love air conditioning, set it as low as possible on as high fan speed as possible and then cocoon yourself in a duvet
@Flyk Especially when you aren't paying for it.
09:12
@Flyk my alternative when I am in hotels: exactly the same as you but with no duvet
duvets are waaaay too hot
09:32
@RoryAlsop I hate being cold though
snuggly is the only way
lol
smuggly sounded fun
@RoryAlsop you reverting to your piratical roots again?
@RоryMcCune It's a bit of pirate, with a bit of cute - yeah, sure :-)
@RoryAlsop and a walking carpet ?
@M'vy hahaha
09:49
GUYZ I NEED IT SEKURITY SYSTM THAT IS IMMUNE TO HAX PLZ HELP!
as we all do
but it needs to be virus proof
and I don't want a password because that's too hard
I am entering my DMZ, back in ~90 minutes
@Flyk Another term for 'bathroom', right?
actually I was star baiting using the definition of DMZ mentioned in the star list
like I'd actually announce that
@Flyk Ahh - pub, then. for food, drink and doughnuts
(and rory...)
09:55
you're going to eat @Simon's significant other/much better half/the only part we like?
and then follow it up with a @RоryMcCune dessert?
well this conversation is getting odd rather quickly :op
@RoryAlsop I believe @Flyk was referring to chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/23229961#23229961 as opposed to our room definition ...
I am like, the definition of odd
except when I'm not
and during that time I am asleep
@Flyk Nope, you are odd then as well.
well I wouldn't know, I was asleep at the time
Thus why I have told you.
09:58
what are you doing watching my sleep GET OUT OF MY ROOM
@DavidFreitag does raise the question of how you know that of course...
@RоryMcCune ahhhh - well, in that case, thanks for sharing, @Flyk :-)
11 mins ago, by Flyk
like I'd actually announce that
I desperately need a microscope.
@DavidFreitag there are pills for that. I get adverts in my email most days...
10:13
@RoryAlsop I've never gotten such mail. Perhaps you should use a dummy account the next time you order those pills.
pills lol, you can turbo charge a tiny engine but it still doesn't compare to having the right equipement in the first place
poor @David
Indeed, poor me. I suppose an engine swap is in order.
no, just give up
10:31
@Flyk Would you not drop a massive engine into your car if you had the opportunity?
no
I would just buy a better car
can't be bothered with all of that messing about
@Flyk offtopic - I need to migrate that comment to the Pit Stop chat room :-)
Me either, which is why I would pay someone who is highly skilled at engine swaps to do the job for me.
The next car I get is going to be electric anyway
@Flyk Tesla P85D...
@Flyk only car with "Ludicrous mode"
10:37
@Flyk Given the current context, don't you already have electric cars?
No I will wait until the next generation I think
@DavidFreitag well yes, if we're going to hang on to that context, I have several
@Flyk I reckon next-gen will be semi-autonomous
"autonomous car" fulfills less of my requirements than current vehicles
@Flyk ... Old Rory is only just keeping up with this pseudo context switching ...
I still don't know whether I will ever want an electric car. There's just something about the sound of a large V8
10:39
also I doubt we're that close to fully autonomous
the next generation of cars can't be more than a year or two away
@DavidFreitag electric has far better torques
@DavidFreitag In between racing last week, we got to test drive the BMW i3. Great for what it does, but entirely useless for me
@Flyk Much better torques, but that's not the point, really.
@Flyk full autonomy is ~5-10 years from now for early adopters I reckon
Maximum range (even using the on board generator) is just over 100 miles
@RoryAlsop yeah I don't get how Tesla is the only one who seem to be able to do good range on an electric
10:40
@RoryAlsop I will be eternally envious of you Europeans. The nearest track day to me is >500 miles away.
@RоryMcCune I really really doubt that full autonomy without massive disclaimers is 5 years away
I can't think of anything worse than fully autonomous cars. It's like the worst bits of a car - you don't get to do the most fun bit - the actual driving
and I will never get in a car that requires a disclaimer for software issues
@Flyk you know that autonomous cars have already racked up 10,000's of standard road miles
@RoryAlsop For the monotony of the daily drive, I would enjoy it. For weekend drives with the windows down in the countryside, I would hate it.
10:41
@RоryMcCune There is that Israeli company doing drop out batteries, which is a viable alternative. Drive to station, drop out battery. Pop in new one - 150 mile range!
@Flyk only accidents have been other people hitting them
@DavidFreitag I choose my commute each day based on fun (now have 7 alternative routes)
@RоryMcCune in idyllic environments that have been extensively mapped
@RoryAlsop There are zillions of routes for me to go to work, and all of them are equally as clogged with people. That and I only work 7 miles from where I live.
10:43
I'm sorry but driving around the valley is hardly the same as paris or london
@Flyk and it was 1 mil miles, I was off by a couple of orders of magnitude
47 secs ago, by Flyk
@RоryMcCune in idyllic environments that have been extensively mapped
@Flyk imagine Paris with only autonomous cars
heh heh heh
@DavidFreitag I've been on california roads, I wouldn't describe the traffic there as Idyllic
And then imagine a hacker...
10:43
Also, those google cars are hideous, and I would sooner walk to my destination than ride in one.
@RoryAlsop tesla's response to their Defcon security vulns was good, did an OTA patch for it
@RоryMcCune Have you ever been to new england in the us? The worst drivers ever.
@RоryMcCune I would describe any road conditions where tiredness would rank high on the list of things that could kill you as idyllic
@DavidFreitag have you ever been to southern Europe/India....
My preferences for transport, long journeys: aeroplane, car, train. Short journeys: helicopter, car, motorbike, taxi. Bus is an option in emergency. Tram isn't.
@RоryMcCune I saw the headline - haven't read it yet
@RоryMcCune Mumbai or Delhi - terrifying
10:46
@RoryAlsop basically to get control they had to find an ethernet port buried in the car, but once they had, they could get remote control.. not the most practical attack, but interesting nonetheless
my preferences for transport: long + medium > plane, medium (not cross country) or short > car
and as far cars with wireless connections
what could possibly go wrong
@RoryAlsop heck yeah, those two were the worst, Calcutta was somewhat less bad, dajeeling was actually nice
and you know manufacturers will be like "oh not really our problem" if somebody hacks your car and drives you into a train
Currently we have the worst of both worlds - enough tech to be vulnerable to hackers but we still have to drive.
10:49
I'm not sure why driving is a downside
@RоryMcCune It's the whole 6 or 7 lanes of traffic fitting into 4 lanes, with cows and children in there, random lane changes, pot-holes you can find entire civilisations in etc...
if you don't like driving, why don't you be a pedestrian and stop getting in everybody else's way
@Flyk Because public transport is not so great everywhere in the world.
@RoryAlsop yeah the only good bit, is that you rarely get fast enough in the cities for a crash to be life-threatening
@Flyk to me the driving is the best bit. Did I bore you guys enough yet with last Wednesday's chat?
10:50
@RoryAlsop the worst I saw was a motorway journey where they had a contra-flow without any cones or segregation... just suddenly traffic coming the other way on your side of the road!
@DavidFreitag that's not our problem, if you don't like driving then don't drive, don't blame some other failure on the reason for you ruining driving for everybody else
@RoryAlsop I don't believe I was here
@Flyk If only it were that simple.
Cheap autonomous taxis would be nice.
@DavidFreitag it is that simply, don't make me poison every pig on the planet to get back at you first ruining driving
actually that's a really good idea O_O
@Flyk Me driving this Formula 3000 car really badly: youtu.be/NDjN3fw1g2U?t=7m
10:53
target the bacon to rule society
@Flyk I have no issues with driving, I quite enjoy it, really. But I do understand the sentiment behind autonomous ones.
and a bit better in an Ariel Atom: youtube.com/…
@RoryAlsop How is it that you get to drive these cars?
musicians have all the best people on speed dial
@DavidFreitag Well - if you look at www.palmersport.com, you can see some of the options. I pay £700 and get a day racing Caterhams, Atoms, Le Mans cars, BMW M4 GTP's, F-3000, karts etc - is awesome!!!
That one should be £1500-ish, but we now get a big discount
10:57
@RoryAlsop No such service exists here, it is pretty much BWYD
and 2 of the guys in my team own the local Aston Martin/Rolls Royce garage - so I have a couple of test drives planned... :-)
well the Americans aren't that great at making decent cars, still
@DavidFreitag for me to take my car on a track day it is more expensive than the Palmersport day
A minimum cost for my car (assuming no damage) is about £1100 for a day on the track
@RoryAlsop Why is that? Wear and tear?
yup
tyres will cost me over £800
brake pads another £200-ish
10:58
That's literally an entire month's salary for me.
sometimes new brake fluid, shocks, a brake line, once
yeah - that's why I can't do it any more
So I use other people's cars
Jonathan Palmer has lots
I knew somebody who had an Aston Martin something or other ages ago
and when you break them - he puts you in a fresh one
literally the only time I've been impressed by a guy's car
it was nice to be in
:-)
@Flyk I was playing with a 615bhp V12 Vantage S - sounded sooo lovely
11:00
mechanical clothing removal system
actually that reminds me
and I can't for the life of me remember what it is
but it's a tiny lamborghini
and that was really quite nice to drive
for a brief moment I thought about possibly buying one but it's a bit low to deal with the roads around here
This guy is hysterical.
And also extremely odd.
11:36
maybe it was the Huracán
@Flyk ooh - nice
not that I've spent the last 30 minutes looking at cars
@Flyk google search: all Lambo's :-)
well I knew it was fairly recent
I just don't understand spending that much on a car
11:52
now, spending that much on a handful of audio hardware
I totally get that
and if I ever find myself in a situation where I absolutely must have an eventide h8000 I would just buy one
I've never found that situation though
I also enjoy being able to race a car that costs more than my house.
I have on occasion bought a guitar that costs more than a month's salary, and a car that costs 3 month's. I guess if I was ever earning enough that a Lambo was 3 month's salary, I might...
