@RоryMcCune Reminds me of the comic where Iron Man is offering to give "some real dick" to Captain America (or maybe it was the other way around, or someone else).
@Iszi yeah I've seen that one, that meaning definitely does not exist now..
@Iszi Good anecdote bro, any other unsure facts that we should be aware of?
Oh wow.
So, oszi got almost every single fact wrong.
Silly oszi.
although as with many other things on the Internet, I have seen it suggested that this may be fake
18:02
@RоryMcCune wow - I have never seen that before
@schroeder it turns up on reddit quite regularly, may or may not be real
the original text was actually "massive dick"
don't believe everything you read on the internet
pls
@Simon Umm... nope. I only got the word "solid" wrong.
I don't care, ex-one.
That is, indeed, Iron Man talking to Captain America and offering "some * dick"
^^ this one apparently is real
@Iszi Wanna also tell everyone how you ignored me so much that I disdad'd you?
Because it's that hard to play baseball like once a week with me.
@RоryMcCune IIRC boner = joke, particularly a bad one?
@Iszi apparently according to dorkly.com/post/68038/… it meant "embarrassing mistake"
18:08
@RоryMcCune Ah, right. That seems more like it.
@RоryMcCune Interesting how that article demonstrates a new form of the term - "cock-up".
Essentially synonymous with both definitions of "boner".
Good morning
erm evening
@Jeroen-ITNerdbox The DMZ is on U.S. Eastern time. It's afternoon.
Well, it's not here, but.... good afternoon to you

Q: I only use windows for games. Do I need anti virus protection?

sinekonataI use Linux, and even though I'm not pretending my system is virus-free, it's generally accepted that even an aggressive firewall is not a requirement. I want to install Windows 7 on a machine which I will use strictly for playing games. Browsing on it may even be discarded, if necessary. So, f...

Can anyone protect this question? It was asked in 2014 and now it has become an answering-fest.
huh, I figured it was a recent oneo
I wonder if there should be distinctive visuals for "old" questions that were recently bumped
@Simon done
Cheers.
@Simon it was just a Protect, I didn't expect fanfare ....
pls
18:36
Nobody expects fanfare until it's too late.
Talk to your children today.
but feel free to snort 20 pounds of cocaine that's alright
@Simon what time is your donut visiting chat tomorrow? need to make sure I'm around :op
o pls, ovid is the one who spread the rumor that I promised.
I have no idea if she'll actually come.
@Simon but but it's right there in the pin wall, doesn't that automatically make it true?
18:41
In the fluffy world of the fluffs, yes but not in this world.
so I'm working on a floating-point string spec
no
I'll be using it in my custom PHP password checker
18:59
Yeah, it works ! I can tunnel TeamViewer through a SOCKS proxy through a SSH connection through a SSL tunnel.
nurd
This allows me to perform a remote control of a system which is 20cm away by making all the data cross the Atlantic Ocean (twice).
Convenient.
@ThomasPornin ahh the wonders of "secure" environments
@RоryMcCune Usually I simply hook up my phone, but I have reach my monthly quota.
Incidentally I am using the SOCKS/SSH/SSL trick right now for chat.SE.
19:04
@ThomasPornin already, yikes
Let me guess, you have a wonderful 1 GB too because you don't want to pay 38272382364732846$ since we have shitty plans in Canaduh?
@RоryMcCune My contract months start on the 11th day...
@ThomasPornin ahh I was thinking calendar month, that's not so bad then..
@Simon I have 2 GB and I pay 85$ per month...
@RоryMcCune Calendar months are so from the 80s.
19:05
@Simon pls
@ThomasPornin I hope that's an iPhone plan, if not you're getting ripped off.
@Simon It's a Samsung phone, and I am aware that it is expensive.
(the plan, not the phone)
Also, don't you get a decent discount for working for CGI?
Or that doesn't that apply to consultants?
@ThomasPornin Eugh Samsung?
If I get hardware from CGI it will be CGIzed hardware, with all sorts of "security software" that I certainly don't want on my own computers and phones.
19:07
The only thing samsung manufactures that is of quality is their SSDs
3GB for $100 here at Telus
@ThomasPornin My buddy works for CGI and did get a discount at Rogers, it's certainly not CGI hardware.
I pay $40 for 512MB
@ThomasPornin ahh large consultancies, rarely a fun computing env. Our lot are actually remarkably sane, provide requirements and software and let us mostly manage our own builds
dovid you're the Americano who's paying the most in the world for his data plan.
19:08
@DavidFreitag Some Galaxy Mini Something. I took the one which was physically the smallest in the store, while still allowing tethering over USB.
@Simon I used to pay $100 for unlimited data on Verizon
Then I realized I only used ~500-1GB/mo
Dayum.
Which was 99% gmusic
Then I realized, my phone has 64GB internal storage. I now use on average 16MB per month of data
I'm paying 45$ taxes in for 1 GB now.
I really don't want to pay more, it's such a damn waste.
A friend of mine has unlimited data from Verizon, and to test it, he downloaded >1TB of data in one month
19:11
Through tethering?
His phone was probably the hottest phone on earth.
Oh lawd.
He set up a server to continuously download the same file over and over again
So no matter where he was, he was constantly downloading. Of course his battery life was like 4 hours
Or he could be cool and throw everything in /dev/null.
I don't think he did that, but I'm pretty sure he deleted the file once it was done downloading

2 hours later…
21:34
@DavidFreitag Samsung audio hardware is brilliant on phones
@RoryAlsop But that's about the only brilliant bit.
Well, you can sort the rest by wiping on arrival and putting cyanogen on it
No, you can't sort their awful construction quality with a custom rom.
No custom rom could have saved my Galaxy Nexus.
@Gilles looks like embedded is dieing again. meta.embedded.stackexchange.com/questions/69/…
@DavidFreitag :(
I still feel this leaves a hole that neither SO nor EE cover
@DavidFreitag uh? what's so bad about a Galaxy Nexus?
@Gilles Mine died a horrible decrepit agonizing death.
21:42
@DavidFreitag after you dropped it from the 5th floor?
@Gilles It definitely does, however there just isn't enough motivation from the participants (me included...)
@Gilles No, I take excellent care of my devices.
I have one which had been previously owned by other colleagues and it's still fine, though I did replace the original battery
Mine lasted just a few weeks past 2 years of age, then it slowed to the point where it took 10+ seconds to get to the home screen from any application.
If I wiped and put a fresh rom on it, it would get better, but then it would slow back down.
So I bought a Oneplus one and never looked back.
@DavidFreitag that's a software problem!
@DavidFreitag so don't reinstall whatever bad software you had
@Gilles I tried stock AOSP roms, even vanilla android. It was not a software issue.
21:45
I've had something like that with Cyanogenmod, but rebooting made it work again
your symptoms sound very software problem to me
Back then it was bugless beast, which blows CM out of the water in terms of performance.
@Flyk Then it was a problem with that version of android, because me and my friend tried 30+ roms (again, including vanilla android) and they all had the same issue.
yes because Android is the pinnacle of software stability
And the device worked perfectly fine on that version the day I bought it.
Also, the same exact roms worked just fine on other phones.
I've wondered if Google apps weren't the culprit
21:48
Bugless beast installed with only the play store
Anyone wanna buy a kidney or two? I have to pay rent again next month.

1 hour later…
22:56
@DavidFreitag Move to Mountain View, where rent costs more than any sensible person will ever make.
Like this apartment -- 2 bedrooms renting for a meager $6250/mo. That's $75K/yr.
@tylerl The issue isn't cost, the issue is that I make $20k a year.
And my car alone costs me a third of my entire income
You need roommates.
Well this is a two bedroom apartment.
A cheaper AM335X dev board: seeed.cc/beaglebone_green
and a review here
23:18
@DavidFreitag why you no prices?
@tylerl Because I was lied to. It is "released" but not "released" in the way the allows you to buy it. Presumably it will be within striking distance of the raspi.
23:58
@DavidFreitag "The BBG will launch with a $39 price tag, or about the same price as a Raspberry Pi."
that's pretty tight margins
Though you can see that they've saved several dollars on connectors alone.
