@DavidFreitag I'm lucky to get 25mb/s
can some mod please merge these two accounts security.stackexchange.com/questions/95355/… (see the edit)? cheers!
actually wait, we don't really have the option to merge accounts without dev help, or do we?
@raz moderate misunderstanding of how crypto works, casual allegations of government conspiracy, a vague answer that doesn't really say anything
5 stars out of 5
@RоryMcCune thanks for that dadjokes reddit. It's funny, and it's not like I had any work to do today...
@AviD You needed the break after the morning you've had.
15:10
@raz too many things wrong with that answer, I won't even bother with a comment... -1
that question seems like a dupe tho
@DavidFreitag so actually, turns out they had to replace the battery altogether. Sucks... eeeexcept that it was still under warranty, just barely. So I got a fresh battery and warranty restart, for free.
They even drove me home while they worked on it, then drove my car over when they were done. Awesome place.
@AviD Considering the laundry list of other potential problems, I would call that a win.
but yeah, a little bit of humour (very little bit) goes a long way to break a crappy mood.
is it terrible that some of those dadjokes were really making me laugh?
@AviD what do you drive?
@TildalWave ...your mother crazy!
damn I'm infected
Ford peoplewagon.
15:15
@AviD You are a dad, thus you are the target audience for such jokes. If you did not laugh I might be a little worried.
@DavidFreitag you're wrong. The target audience for dadjokes is dad's kids.
@AviD No, then they would be called "Jokes for dad's kids", not "dad jokes"
you two are using target and audience for jokes all wrong
you're missing the point. It's not a question of who enjoys them, it's who they're aimed at.
"aimed" as in pointed, like a gun. Or a missle.
Though for the record, my kids usually enjoy these jokes more than I do.
I wish I had a missile to aim at somebody
preferably one with a nuclear warhead
15:20
Nuclear launch detected.
there we go again, with @Flyk's penis envy. Damn Freud.
ovid
@AviD hahahaha
@AviD I think she's referring to weapons of mass destruction, not weapons of mass reproduction :P
@TildalWave Exhibit A: @Simon. Now you tell me, is there a difference?
15:24
wat
@AviD Wait... did you just... compliment... @Simon...?
not in the slightest, quite the opposite. Emphatically so, in fact.
if its not clear, ask his donut.
@AviD now that you mention it, not really... nuclear winter / canada ... same consequences
@AviD Oh, I read about it on her blog.
heh
15:27
It's a good thing @Simon doesn't know about it. Maan the things she says about him.
@DavidFreitag "today @Simon did not properly appreciate my sprinkles"
pLs
@AviD I suffer from no penis envy at all
hehehe "sprinkles"
that's inappropriate @roro!
@Flyk oh I know all about your collection.
you know nothing
at all, in any subject
15:28
jon snow
@AviD would hundreds-and-thousands make it any better?
jern sner
@TildalWave that's too many. Ask @Adi.
@AviD Ok, then, how much is just right Goldilocks?
I wouldnt know about Goldilocks, I'm married.
15:30
lolmarried
@AviD What does being married have to do with your fascination of porridge?
now I'm confused
wait, what is porridge a euphemism for?
@DavidFreitag imprisonment?
Have you never heard of the three little bears?
@Simon I know, she totally pulled the short straw on that one didn't she?
15:32
"Goldilocks and the Three Bears" and the older story title, "The Story of the Three Bears", is a fairy tale with two variants. The original tale has three bachelor bears living in a house in the forest, and a dirty old woman as the story's antagonist. The first variant is an adaptation introducing Goldilocks to the story as the antagonist. The second variant has the three bachelor bears transformed into Papa, Mama and Baby Bear. Both the little girl and the Bear family have remained in the tale through various editions over the years. The original tale tells of an ugly, old woman who enters the...
I like your clarification of "so" short
as in "it's still short but it's not that short"
well
you know how 95% of guys are bigger than average
Define "average"
and 80% are better than average drivers
your sentence makes no sense
15:34
well yeah, exactly
your sentience makes no sense
average indicates an average, the majority cannot be above average or else the average would follow them
I think you need to collect some empirical data @Avid. Get your ruler.
agghh help @RоryMcCune I cant stop!
@Flyk YES EXACTLY thatsthejoke.jpg
It wasn't funny
Neither are you
@DavidFreitag they don't make rulers that short
raz
raz
@TildalWave Yeah, and everyone's answer is terrible
15:35
it wasnt supposed to be. I was referencing a well known pseudo-statistic, as defense for excluding myself from that.
@Flyk Yes they do @Simon told me so.
although, mathematically it is possible - if the standard deviation is quite large for those smaller than the average.
@raz that's why I looked for a dupe, but couldn't find it ... I swear there's a better thread for that same question tho, it might just be worded too differently
@Flyk Poor woman.
@DavidFreitag lsp
@Flyk use calipers then
oops, a plural noun

Q: WarGames: Platforms to practice and improving your hacking skill set

0x90Do you know of any good free platform in which we can practice mechanisms such as XSS, SQL injection, low level, reverse engineering and other hacking skills online? Q: Is it possible to recover securely deleted data from H.D.D using the forensics?

user41890I just want to know if it's possible to recover and see securely(or wiped out) deleted data from H.D.D using forensics ? 15:48
@TildalWave Aren't minor grammatical edits discouraged? I vaguely remember reading that somewhere
I might just be a lunatic though
@etherealflux yeah but there's a few of them, and some sentences are a bit awkward
has been removed all information...
ah yeah, that could use some tidying
forensics of police...
Why don't you all just stop and do the pls dance?
@Simon because she'd laugh and ask why I try again after just failing a few hours ago?
15:51
@RоryMcCune a good reminder why I shouldnt go work there
a company they bought every so often tries to recruit me.. was fine having them as a client, but I aint gonna work there
@RоryMcCune That's brutal.
I would fly to the Cisco headquarters and heave the firewall through their front door.
yeah, sounds awful, but also SOP.
alSOP
@Simon -.-
...
Standard Operating Procedure
@AviD Yeah well their SOP can go play with itself in the corner.
15:54
@AviD yeah thema and people like Oracle, who regard getting security patches for a product you've paid them for as a privilege that you need to pay them more for
roro al standard operating procedure
@RоryMcCune they regard talking to you at all as a special privilege you need to pay for
@RоryMcCune Heh, imagine having to pay for java updates
They'd be quadrillionaires
oh jeez @RоryMcCune I cant stop clicking
15:58
@DavidFreitag "A Java update is ready to be installed! You have the latest version of Java already."

@etherealflux A java up- process ended

@AviD sorry I shouldn't have linked a dadjokes page to you... although really I should be apologising to your wife and kids, who'll likely need to hear them...
@DavidFreitag wait isn't that Starbucks?
@TildalWave I have never once paid for any form of coffee, nor do I intend to.
@DavidFreitag Nevermind their endless threats that they will eventually disable unsigned applets
eventually, at some point, maybe eventaully
16:00
@etherealflux Several engineering applets that I use have been blocked, but I suspect that Chrome is the one doing the blocking.
@RоryMcCune I usually dont like that kind of humor, but there are some good ones.
my son particularly likes them - we call them "2nd grade humor" (he's in 5th... )
@DavidFreitag wot?
that wasn't a question
@TildalWave wat
@DavidFreitag You have to turn down Java security, then turn it down again, then do a little dance to amuse it
my point was there is a quadrillionaire company serving java updates
16:02
@TildalWave Yes, and my point was not to me.
well me neither, their coffee sucks
@TildalWave yeah, and their milky drinks barely taste like coffee
or milk for the matter
16:33
@TildalWave But why? Milk is delicious!
32 mins ago, by AviD
@TildalWave yeah, and their milky drinks barely taste like coffee
or, [indeed, taste like] milk
16:55
so I got some nice dutch habanero seeds ... and I'm now hesitating if I should plant some already or not
@TildalWave No, you should dry, then grind them into a fine powder. Mix that into tabasco sauce and put it into an eye dropper. I think you can see where this is going.
@DavidFreitag but I'll also get ghost and scorpion pepper seeds, so I should wait, right? :)
habanero is nothing compared to those
@TildalWave The more the merrier.
@TildalWave Yes but even simple habanero will ignite the surface of your eyeball as if you had a mini star embedded within your skull.
@DavidFreitag erm not really, I just did that a few days ago and I was fine
I was deseeding them, then scratched my eye of course
no latex gloves either, of course
they're only about 300k sku ... quite a bit less than pepper sprays
17:13
I got cayenne pepper powder up my nose once
not much, but it still woke me up for sure
I'm used to chili peppers and I grow some on my windowsill... problem with habanero is that they grow in a rather tall bush so I now hesitate to plant some because that means I'd have to have them on the balcony (can't put that in the garden, everything gets hot then, including tomatoes and green salads LOL)
so the problem now is if I'd grow any by the time the winter comes
they're kinda similar to Jamaican bell chili that I have, and that one grows painfully slow
(but is a huge plant)
17:34
I went on r/badcode again and almost died
@etherealflux pffft
you can feel your soul trying to escape your body as you hit line 194

@etherealflux Yeah, that is weird. I wish it would come back.

That's because they are sourceforge links

Q: Is there an IntelliJ Java Profiler

GavriYasharIs there a Profiler for IntelliJ like the one for Matlab? lets say you have this code a = true; i = 0; while(a) { if(a) i++ // some fancy stuff which takes 1 second each loop if(i > 1e6) break; } Now lets say i run the code In Matlab it would look like this after i opened th...

18:06
@DavidFreitag wat
@Ohnana yall hurd me
you're a little more motivated than I am
I searched google for "jetbrains java profiler" it was literally the first result.
JetBrains has a fancy website that seems to cater to startup employees doing Java, but the old-timer Java devs I work with seem to like YourKit profiler much better.
@DavidFreitag i didn't know what a profiler was ;-;
18:13
@Ohnana it's a program that discriminates against certain types of objects based entirely on their public attributes
@Ohnana You live l'America of the Super United, you should know what profiling is.
@etherealflux @simon racist programming jokes \o/

@Simon i live in the northeast US which hides their profiling tyvm

18:15
@Herringbone_Cat I like JetBrains because of the integration with VisualStudio. It was what I knew so I looked it up.
@DavidFreitag ah yeah, we use VS but for C#, and do use JetBrains resharper. But Java devs are living in Eclipse.
@Herringbone_Cat You can use VS for Java? I use JB for C# as well. resharper is also tons of help
@DavidFreitag yes, especially with the release of VS 2015 it's becoming more Java and also DevOps/open framework friendly
I do everything in Powerpoint
jetbrains doesn't offer transitions
@Herringbone_Cat Oh right, they are doing node.js integration with ASP.Net stuff I forgot about that. Ewwwww
18:22
@DavidFreitag a lot more than that, actually, with VS 2015. It's starting to look better than Eclipse.
Good, eclipse sucks.
This is an extremely rare instance of me giving praise to a Microsoft product, so, revel in it.
@Herringbone_Cat Oh I'm revelling in it alright.
Well, revelling in something anyway.
Good, as long as there is revelry all is well
eclipse made me hate ides
18:26
I basically do all of my development in vim. But I'm an exception.
You're also a huge nurd.
@Herringbone_Cat You and @Thomas alike.
guilty as charged
@DavidFreitag It took me years to transition from vi to vim. The ANSI color scared me. :)
It took me years to exit vi the first time I decided to try running it
In the end I just hit the reset button on the board.
That sounds about right. I should compile some photographs of former pico/nano users switching to vi, and the expressions on their faces.
Well, you know, CTRL+Z still works
18:29
I like nano, it's simple and it's user friendly.
@Herringbone_Cat I used to configure my vim in monochrome (I had become lazy and my code was not as readable as it should without the colours, so removing the colours forced me to write better code).
@Herringbone_Cat same!
But anyway I started using vim at the time of vim-3.0, which did not support colours (and I was using it in an old xterm that did not support colours either).
@ThomasPornin ah yes, I was tempted to do that, but I later found the ANSI color to help me do things like, close loops with fi or }
18:30
@Herringbone_Cat I have reactivated colours since that time.
I was also doing Solaris-based things lately until around 2010, so, Solaris didn't even come with vim (it was a third party package), so I was very used to regular old vi.
@Herringbone_Cat The problem with the traditional vi is the one-level undo.
Apart from that, it is fine.
19:07
@DavidFreitag this ^
vim and emacs are like defusing a bomb
but nothing can rival Powerpoint's extensive collection of dark brown backgrounds with black text
if by that you mean instead of taking an hour to defuse it, you just go snip snip snip and it's nice and neat, then yes
@etherealflux No one has yet to be accused of Death by VIM, but "Death by PowerPoint" is something I have suffered through and barely lived to tell the tale.
@etherealflux Are you an adept of gradient backgrounds?
@Simon Back in my middle school days, I used a different gradient style and color scheme for every slide
@etherealflux That's when you realized that you were born to use PP.
@Simon I also used the "bomb" sound
@Simon and per-letter transitions on everything
19:17
@Simon did you misspell "PHP"?
@etherealflux That'd be a bit excessive.
ovid pls
@Simon some of them took 10-15 seconds to complete
Mistakes were made.
Haha.
I'm working on a scheme for powerpointDB
the first version implements noSQL; each slide is an object
the second version is SQL; each slide is a table
all data is stored as a screenshot of text
@etherealflux the story of @Simon's life.
19:19
it uses OCR
to support ACID principles, a new copy is saved whenever someone makes a change
Acid over Sydney
(it was also designed on acid)
@etherealflux I still prefer nano.
:23118748
oops
I'm good at keyboards
I'm slooooowly learning vim
but I use nano most of the time
@etherealflux You can click the arrow to the left of that message and delete it, if you wish.
19:23
If you wish.
@Simon Upon a star?
Upon a donut you donut.
@DavidFreitag but can we do that with @Simon 's messages?
@etherealflux Only if you have a diamond next to your name.
@etherealflux Only the blue donuts can do that.
19:26
@Simon but obviously we can be asked to do it, by other people... if we are called Ovid, obviously
Silly ovid.
@Simon 8 hundred and 9!!!!!
@RoryAlsop Yeah, not too bad eh?
@RoryAlsop so I can ask you to do that?
@AviD clever
English is a wonderfully interpretive language, isn't it

New rule: all chats must be rhyming couplets starting now
I did had done gone and dang
you might say this is a bad idea, but I honestly don't see how
@etherealflux you're a rhyming couplet
@AviD he is a rhyming something...

@AviD @schroeder Another "off-topic" close that I would mark as "On-topic", or migrate to HackOverflow.
@raz They let HackOverflow into beta?

then export your mysql roms
to leverage the dns
19:34
@raz of course its on topic, why wouldnt it be on topic?
it is a crappy closeworthy question, though.
but definitely on topic.
@etherealflux There is no cache memory, this is an ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller with 32k of sram
raz
raz
Why should it be closed?
@AviD Ok, we seem to agree. And I will renounce my support for HackOverflow.
@DavidFreitag in that case, you'll have to use ARP to invert the bitshift
@etherealflux I think that /r/badcode post may have permanently damaged your brain.
Perhaps it is time for a hard reset?
@raz actually no, I dont think its closeworthy.
19:37
@ThomasPornin Speaking of which, if you would like me to run some tests of BearSSL on some really low power stuff, let me know.

@AviD bunch of savages in this town
@raz why did you VtC?
raz
raz
@AviD I don't have the time to respond today, but I probably wil tomorrow.
@AviD I didn't, I was reviewing a vote to close and I voted to "Leave Open"

@etherealflux "that's a functional bug, not security"
raz
raz
@AviD feature
19:44
true story, I actually had a lead programmer at a ridiculously big security company argue with me that a buffer overflow vuln we found is a functional bug, not a security one. SMH.
@AviD h o w
"well, the user might want to write their own custom %ebp values..."
I tried taking back to basics to explain what I mean by "security bug", and how it doesnt conflict, but he didnt want to hear it.
data.stackexchange.com is full of SQL injection vulnerabilities.
The good thing, is that guy is now a dev manager at Oracle. Birds of a feather, and all that.
Ah, the president of this company is a bit naive. He is expecting to get >1 year battery life out of a product with a 110mAh battery.
19:52
what kind of power draw?
For reference, that's approximately 1/15th that of a single AA alkaline battery.
it's teeny
@etherealflux It's an 8bit micro with a bluetooth 4.0 module
my phone has a 7.2 Ah battery because I like being able to destroy tanks with it
So probably 20mA nominal with large 50mA gulps during transmit
19:54
so if we do some math here
110 / 20 = not a year, unless it's only powered on a few hours per year
@etherealflux Plus there's a vibrator motor in there too. It's not looking good.
@DavidFreitag wat
@DavidFreitag what kind of... what in hell are you building
lololol
Hey, I guess everything needs smartphone integration these days
@AviD It's basically a microphone that is constantly monitoring the volume of speech in the vicinity, if it rises over a certain threshold, the vibrator motor alerts the user.
