@AviD checkout stackoverflow.com/q/2353818/228489 SO has lots of questions like this. Sure they get closed or locked but they are still to the benefit of the community
@amccormack - my thinking wasn't to link to getting started questions as such, as there is not a single definable way to get started in infosec, but instead have example questions from specific disciplines
Using the blog post to impart all the getting started info
the blog post would be the main page, linking to questions as they exist
@RoryAlsop but take a look at http://security.stackexchange.com/questions/91309/how-to-get-started-as-a-malware-analyst The question is fairly limited in scope, but I don't really like any of the answers.
but I'm a little biased as I used to work in that field :-p
@amccormack That question would need to be changed quite a bit though. But in reading it I think you are right - there is a definable scope. I reckon if it were worded more along the lines of "what disciplines does a malware analyst require proficiency in?" then it might be more suitable
And I'm just lazy enough that two of me would do a damn good job.
@CodesInChaos But that's the entire point of a clone, it shares all of your experiences and knows everything you know right up until the cloning process
I think we are talking about the "Exact copy" clone, not the "Used your DNA to make a baby" type clone.
The way I feel is there is no point in trying to figure out who the original is. You are exactly the same from the point of the copy, but directly after that your experiences are different.
another interesting scenario that you could raise on finance.se with similar outcomes - what about if future you time travels back to now. do both of you (same you) need to file?
@RоryMcCune no - working from home. Initially because I need to pick up youngest from airport later, but also as Claire's car appears to have suffered a bad structural failure while we were away I need to be the family taxi. I'm working out a question to ask on mechanics.se before I get on to the garage :-(
@RоryMcCune I will also admit - now that I've suffered through it, and seen the nice hardware, the mac is not completley out of the question. I can just pop open some RDPs and be sorted.
@DavidFreitag it's a trust thing. namely, they dont have mine.
@AviD shrug. I'd be willing to bet they had a 3rd party sort out what bloatware crap gets put on the OEM image. If anyone's to blame it's that company.
@RоryMcCune Yes, Dell (and HP i guess) have really been stepping up their game as of late. It's because (at least in Dell's case) they were on the verge of going under a while back.
@AviD Yes, the 3 is the first non-pro that is not running Windows RT
If you get the chance I would suggest trying one out. I don't know what sort of Best Buy type places you have around, but if you have access to a display model I would suggest poking at it
@AviD True enough, but then, there really isn't a point to the pro. You're better off with a $1k laptop with equal specs.
The idea that the pro is a "laptop killer" is a complete fallacy when you can get a device with equal or even slightly better specs for half the price
The Surface 3 is slightly competitive, but when you factor the price of the addons you can still easily get a similarly featured laptop for the base price
I see no gain in mobility. In order to use that keyboard and to prop the surface up it practically needs to be on a solid surface, whereas a laptop can actually be used on my lap
Sure it has a small screen and it's thin, but you can get a similarly priced ultrabook which is thinner
Just as an example, I'd take a zenbook over a SP any day. The lower end zenbooks are even competitive (price wise and spec wise) with the Surface 3.
@RоryMcCune I have all the episodes from this series Sky+'ed - need to watch them some time. Can I have a clue though, are there boobs, death, swords and dragons?
@CodesInChaos Technically, a clone is a set of individuals with the same genes, so two twin brothers ("true" twins) are, together, one clone.
People use the term "clone" to designate what is, in fact, a member of the clone.
The proper way to use genetic cloning is to create another individual with your genes; by nature, that other clone member will be younger, and thus appropriate for harvesting replacement organs.
@Simon that said, it'll be a bit trickier than it used to be to do that, the original one got "blocked for copyright infringement" youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ
literally there's a guy who's the lead developer on their compositor and who thinks he's a security expert
except he isn't
myself and a guy on the X.org board are proposing infrastructure for cross-DE security decision making, and have opened a few discussion topics of security issues in Wayland desktops, but that guy basically decided he's so much more competent than us that even listening to us is a waste of his time
@Simon I... can't do it. I will buy a beater and learn myself to manual. As of right now I have zero experience. And I know yes, yes it's simple to learn and I'll remember it forever, but I have my reasons.
