Q: Is it possible to detect a honeypot?

wjaphqozDo techniques exists to know if a machine is a honeypot (or suspicious indicators)? What techniques can be used for a software inside the honeypot or outside it? What techniques uses malware to prevent infecting honeypot?

wow - that's a LOT of misunderstandings about what honeypots are. The votes for the answers are scary.

Well, you know the old saying "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar". Which we know now is wrong. its actually the other way around ;)

1 hour later…
02:46
Thanks to the DMZ I'm currently drinking my morning coffees - iced vanilla and regular black. Simultaneously.
Today I'm going to be as awake as Neo in the Matrix.

@AviD indeed one of the better ones from this season I thought!
I might need to watch that at some point
@DavidFreitag still the same for us :/
@JourneymanGeek Darn :/
I kinda want one or two but that shipping price is a turnoff
07:02
@RоryMcCune and they've all been fantastic so far.
@Kisunminttu nice! so, coffee and a milkshake - fantastic!
@Kisunminttu I just coldbrewed my first pot of the season. gonna go up to press it pretty soon.
It's a nice, summery blend of Papua New Guinea, Tanzania Utengule Peaberry, and Colombia El Boton. cant wait.
actually, the colombia is kinda heavy and dark. kinda surprised they decided to put that in a "Springtime Blend".
the peaberry is very nice though, and the papua is one of my favorites.
07:18
peaberries! The mutant coffee bean!
Morning all. On my way to B-Sides in the sunshine, having just been given a brief tour of locations from a film
@JourneymanGeek ooo never thought of it like that
AND I HAVE THE MUTANT POWER TO CONTROL COFFEE BEANS!
I am.... BEANO!
no wait
I AM COFFEETO!
nah
got it!
I AM.... THE GRINDER!
Guess the film
@RоryMcCune may have the best luck
@AviD your theme time is by Judas priest
@RoryAlsop and my costume is sponsored by starbucks
heya
07:29
@AviD my parents used to mix 1 part peaberry to 2 parts 'normal' beans when we used to roast our own ;p
heh cool
(tho, my mom considers ice coffee an abomination, and I can't find my recipie for it)
wait, they roasted them together? thats interesting.
I understood peaberries need a different roasting process / time
Yeah. In a wok. Old school style
no additives except a single spoon of sugar for like 3kg of beans, to ... iirc first crack.
> Cold-brewing coffee: Use a large French Press carafe (1 liter) put 10 Tablespoons coarse-ground coffee, fill with cold water, let brew overnight in refrigerator. After about 12 hours, depress plunger and store coffee in clean pitcher. When ready to enjoy, pour 1/2 glass coffee concentrate over ice, then fill the rest with milk.
@JourneymanGeek heh nice
07:31
I might try doing that. I have coffee, and I'm too lazy to make proper indian coffee ;p
I am NOT going to be roasting my own though. wouldnt mind to watch one once, though
We haven't done this in ages.
@JourneymanGeek my guy just brought in some indian coffee. "India Monsooned Malabar". will have to try that sometime soon.
lol
THeir coffee is much better than their website.
Tasty stuff
And if we're on vacation, we can buy it straight from the company that roasts it ;p
@JourneymanGeek that's one hell of a motto :P
07:34
Their website makes me cringe.
@JourneymanGeek oh. oh wow.
why does coffee want to be so corporate???
Donno.
And those stock pictures.
And the antialiasing
and...
and the moving letters. the freaking moving letters.
I'm sorry. I assure you tho. their coffee is pretty good.
hey, my coffee site is pretty bad too, from a tech standpoint. thats not what matters.
07:38
@JourneymanGeek Make it stop moving. My eyes are hurting now.
but... its just so...
Its what they thought the internet would look like in the 90s? ;p
shop.bsigroup.com/upload/271543/… <-- anyone interested in Pen testing might find this assessment of the UK industry interesting...

npr.org/sections/therecord/2015/06/02/411473508/… <--interesting quiz for musicy types to see if you can tell high-quality audio from low...
@RоryMcCune - did you guess the film?
@RoryAlsop ya know I didn't.. may need more coffee! what is it?
08:19
@RоryMcCune Terrible speakers, nothing special for soundcard stuff, and I was able to get 3/6, in the other cases I hit the high quality MP3
SO if I get proper headphones/soundcard setup I'm pretty certain I'll be able to pick the uncompressed ones out.
@Arperum I need to wait till our builders are done for the day, to get enough quiet to hear them properly.. not sure if my aged ears will be able to hear the difference
@RоryMcCune My ears have been repeatedly subjected to loud music, but are still young-ish.
@Arperum you should try some heavy artillery.
@AviD No thank you.
@RоryMcCune Shaun of the Dead. I went past their house on Nelson St
Amused me this morning
08:29
@RoryAlsop ahh it's been aaaaaaaages since I watched that
may need to re-watch along with Hot Fuzz
@RоryMcCune I need to try that with my nice gear.
08:50
^Finnish moose
@StackExchange weird.
10:04
@StackExchange there ya go.

1 hour later…
11:10
Just curious, we have not got the new profile page yet?
What's taking so long? I want to see officially how many people I have touched reached.
@TerryChia dunno it's a bit weird how everywhere else is getting it and we're not...
Lads, I've launched my super duper website!
COME ON
@Simon Is that a challenge?
@TerryChia It absolutely is :)
But the initial "COME ON" was due to the fact that I couldn't manage to get it to display the link properly.
Also, you have the whole code source of the website on Github.

So, yeah. I got accepted into the "Cyber Security" Master's program

11:54
@TerryChia I already told you. I'm an official source
@RоryMcCune The lips are saying "computer says NAh"
Is she saying "computer"?
@Simon seems so. But can't be 100% SURE
@simon : contact => Rejoindre?
@M'vy No?
Contacter?
@Simon Me contacter ?
11:59
Yeah, I agree. Will fix later.
Unless it's some kind of French Canadian expression I'm not aware of
I haven't reviewed the translations much too, it might contain more errors.
Well, "me rejoindre" would have made sense, but you're right that it's weird.
I love little Britain
@Adi whereabouts?
@AviD was it you who recommended that "coffee in fridge overnight" ice coffee recipe?
Fridge coffee + skim milk + sweetener and vanilla extract =so good
@Kisunminttu ayup :-)
I coldbrewed a pot too, so fantastic. thick and creamy.
I just need a pot. I'm using a beer stout and coffee filters...
12:49
@Kisunminttu heh, wat
does that work like a press?
or wind up with a lot of sludge...
13:07
No sludge. Works, but it's messy and a hassle...
13:53
ICE COFFEE?
Are you lads insane?
@Simon no no, it is cold brewed coffee.
as in, no hot water, beans dont get "cooked". Just steeped.
you should try it, will blow your mind.
'course, it's really only summer-appropriate.
Seeing as we've had several days in the high 30s, even a couple hitting 40 - I think it qualifies here.
I would but I'm already at the maximum level of donutness.
A cold beer does the job better.
@Simon no, seriously.
do I need to paste the recipe here again again?
@Simon yeah, kinda a different effect.
for a cold beer?
14:16
Mmmmm. Beeeeer.
@RoryAlsop I'm guessing free beer is coming easily to you this week?
Guys, what are your favourite beers and why?
@SteveDL I'm not too much of a beer guy (unlike some on here) but if I had to pick a favourite it would be a belgian beer, Leffe Blond is likely my favourite. As to why, I like the taste of it, nice and smooth
Yeah, I can name you a bunch of beers that I like, but I'm unsure how to formulate a proper reason.
@Simon i like Estrella because it's super fresh and it reminds me of the time spent with my family in Barcelona, when the weather's really hot
and I like other beers for very different reasons
but i wouldnt drink Estrella in the winter, unless i'm seriously homesick
14:30
@SteveDL Fine then. I like La Fin Du Monde because it reminds me of that night with @AviD's mom.
OUCH.
I'm not sure for whom this ought to have been traumatic.
wat
Me of course!
there we go. that's what a donut would say.
@Simon wait you've slept with @AviD 's mom and he's slept with yours, what sort of weird inception style relation does that make you two?
The Leonardo Dicaprio relation.
14:42
@RоryMcCune eww no, I would never do that.
unless I was like super drunk.
You don't even know what my mom looks like you god damn donut.
also, stop trying to get me to modkick @Simon. Aint gonna happen.
Of course you won't, you don't simply kick the #1 future mod.
Sep 16 '14 at 20:40, by AviD
@Simon exactly. I care more about your mom than you do.
I wasn't even born in 2014.
14:44
oo look what MISTER TRANSCRIPT can find.
heh
@AviD anyway can't have you discarding @Simon 's mom after toying with her affections
wouldn't be chivalrous
all pls
@RоryMcCune I think the word you're looking for is "humane"
14:49
donutian?
15:03
@SteveDL Yes?
15:28
@RоryMcCune - yep, and wine, and cocktails, and swag :-)
Lots of good swag. Still need a light danger though. Think I need to visit the plixer stand tomorrow
15:46
@RoryAlsop what's a "light danger" or is that another case of "Damn you Autocorrect!"?
or thick scottish accent
even you scotsmen cannae unnastand
oi lud
@AviD ho you ya plampf nae danger us weegies cannae unnerstaun ayething, ya ken!
wot
@RоryMcCune innit
15:54
@Simon dear boy, I was merely suggesting that Avi was mistaken in his supposition that people from the largest city in scotland would be unable to comprehend the meaning of each others utterances
o lawd

16:06
@SteveDL I mostly like Belgian beers. There's a specific family of yeast that is used in many Belgian beers, and I happen to like the profile of the ester by-products they produce
@SteveDL Equally, I also like pale ales. Primarily the ones where most hopping happens in the post-boiling process (more aroma and less bitterness).

Just got my SE t-shirt from the SE guys
Would have been cooler if it were Sec.SE, but hey.. beggars can't be choosers
Lucky!
18:11
@RоryMcCune it was light saber
Oh, and Mike Woodhead says hi
18:34
@RoryAlsop followed by some epithets about my current employer? :op
18:56
@Adi That's awesome, I'm jealous :D
Possibly some lighthearted jest @RоryMcCune, yes
Oh, and Javvad may have admitted to offences during his talk... :-p
19:09
@RoryAlsop d'oh and I missed it!
@RoryAlsop were the borg perhaps mentioned in passing?
19:42
Yup :-)
How's that for a t-shirt, then? :-)
