@Flyk waddaya mean flagging non-duplicates?
and what you have against old people?
since I'm now looking at tools and many of these are closed
@AviD closed questions that are not dupes? (we keep dupes as pointers to valid questions?)
@AviD they're slow and don't keep up with the program :p
@Flyk ahh you didnt mention closed.
@Flyk heh
make good zombie diversions
@Flyk in general, I would say yes - IF they dont have any value whatsoever.
THAT SAID
there is sometimes value in keeping around closed q's as signposts for what will get hammered.
I don't understand what you're saying. I'll only flag questions if they need a tag removing and they're closed but not duplicates
13:02
there is always some meta q that pops up and says "hey questions of type X shouldnt be closed, look there are 5 of them and 3 are open" vs "umm well there are 30 of those q's and only 3 are still open... make that 2... 1..."
@AviD Look at me being awesome!
@Simon @Flyk already made you obsolete.

Q: Information Security on a network

Liz M.You are an IT Security administrator in a banking organization. Your organization hired an outside IT firm to do a proof of Concept for new equipment which is a computer based system. This equipment is bulky and after importing it from Europe, it’s delivered direct to organization’s premises, for...

a.k.a. please do my homework pls
@M'vy I appreciate the use of "pls".
13:09
@Simon yeah, the last one was specifically tailored for you
@M'vy notice the tag. That damn tag.
I really don't like the content on your site
@M'vy tyvm sir
@AviD Ahahahahahahahahahahaha
I cant even figure out what tag WOULD be appropriate.
13:10
@AviD ?
heh.
Seems like a good tag to me :)
I got it.
Ready for automatic burnination :P
I guess the guy did just read&write the text form the textbook
@M'vy I dont think so. I think it was a straight copypaste, no reading involved.
Hi Liz, welcome to Information Security. Your question is pretty wide open, and there are numerous options with numerous aspects each with numerous tradeoffs to consider. Perhaps if you could elaborate a bit on the actual network architecture, requirements, and the real causes for this, instead of just copypasting a homework assignment. — AviD ♦ 35 secs ago
13:14
@AviD nice one
I like what you did there
thank you, I try
snark tastes better when its subtle
it is quite literally copypasta
oooh nice catch @RоryMcCune :)
ha, nice.
the only question is, is it the same person who asked on that site or someone wanting to get paid for an answer...
13:18
funny auto-complete does not show RoryMcCune when you type more than 1 letter
@RоryMcCune lucky she didnt give us the limits of 1.5 pages and practical demo...
@M'vy ahh that's my anti-ambiguous Rory'ing filter kicking in
to stop people @rory 'ing me :)
when they really meant @RoryAlsop
raz
raz
@RоryMcCune
@raz yeah 'cause that's not amgibuous :)
Did you put in some silly character ?!
raz
raz
13:19
@RоryMcCune
No I just typed R and tab completed
@M'vy yarr
the o isn't an o
@raz yeah but if you put @rory it doesn't get me , which is what I was trying to avoid
raz
raz
ah gotcha
how would you tag a question that is about reinstalling an operating system to remove nasty
@Flyk duplicate?

Q: Is making a clean install enough to remove potential malware?

StrapakowskyIs formatting the disk and reinstalling the system from scratch (to Ubuntu) enough to remove any potential hidden software spyware, keyloggers etc.? Or can something still persist installed in the bios or something like that? What to do then? To be clear, not concerned about common malware. The...

@M'vy duping it doesn't resolve the tagging issue though does it
@Flyk well that's right.
...?
Maybe dupes should be removed from tags alltogether
thanks for your hypothetical musing, doesn't really help right now though
13:28
yeah... still thinking
@Flyk incident-response
I am the wrong person for this job, as far as I'm concerned, malware, viruses, trojans and spyware are all basically the same thing
have fun
@Flyk it's never too late to learn :P
@Flyk as far as we're concerned, too
I don't want to, the subject doesn't interest me
13:31
the diferences, while significant, are typically academic.
And to be honest with you, many person do think the same
well, for Trojan it's simple: it's a vessel
it can transport nasty :)
noooo
I had a go, your posts have given me a headache, I don't want to know -.-
Timeo danaos et dona ferentes
trololo lolo et lolo trololo
@M'vy français sont pires
13:43
@AviD ...
@AviD hehe
how the hell is snapchat worth 15 billion $ ???
how the hell is snapchat worth a penny ?
though yeah, I guess thats not worse than whatsapp.
@AviD Nudies are worth a lot buddy.
13:47
but seriously guise, there is no bubble! and dont mind the guy behind the curtain!
@AviD you think they really delete their data? All those naked pics
* not that I've ever used it for that
suuuuuure
er
let's look at this objectively
I don't trust men, so my first reason that I'd never do it is I'd have nobody to send them to anyway
secondly, it's easier to defend against losing something that doesn't exist, so such a picture wouldn't ever get taken
thirdly(!)
@Flyk that is such a misogynistic statement
you cant send them to women?
@AviD why would I send naked pictures of myself to women?
I have an entire circle of female friends for when I hate men that much
13:51
@Flyk why not?
you know what, my second point is probably the most important
men can be secondly
thirdly, why the hell would you ever even do that
Well a secret is something known by a single person.
that too
@M'vy once a secret is digitized, it's really only a matter of time before it's no longer a secret
it's a "when", not an "if"
@Flyk could be an awful lot of time though
13:55
@M'vy that's basically a middle management response
@Flyk Well I mean you could digitise it and be the only one to know. And use proper encryption.
@M'vy are you advocating security through obscurity?
@Flyk nope
well kindof I guess
What I want to say is once someone else knows, everyone else know
which is basically the point I'm making
Not quite. I could tell you: I have a secret.
And even, it's in this file encoded with that particular algorithm.
So unless you force me to reveal the secret (or the secret secretting the secret :D ) it would remain secret
14:06
@M'vy or force your computer
or your keyboard
or your backup server
well indeed. But that's not the point.
I think it was exactly her point
but I would correct her statement to say "a matter of time and/or money"
@AviD well yeah it's definitely a matter of time. My point was it could be a very long time.
@M'vy and my point is that if somebody is interested enough to spend enough, it won't be.
the best kept secret is the one nobody cares about
ask @Simon, he knows
Yeah, just like the secret about me doing it with yo mama.
14:11
yeah, noone cares.
@AviD yeah well.
14:30
@AviD it's fine, you wouldn't want to buck the status quo by being somebody who actually agrees with me
@Flyk oh boo frikkin hoo. nobody likes me! suck it up.
I usually agree with technical statements you make, as scary as that concept sounds.
;/
and to be clear, in this case, I WAS agreeing with you. I was just clarifying a point on which you were not 100% accurate (but still correct).
I reject your agreement on account of you using "i" instead of "I"
@Flyk Still haven't gotten a picture of your setup.
14:33
i dont know what your referring too
@Simon might as well give up on waiting for that
@Simon No it's naked
ffs
I see donuts EVERYWHERE.
@Simon what does this change from every other day?
sorry, last time I linked a picture of anything real life for me online, it was an opsec breach
so... nope
14:35
@M'vy Usually they aren't mean donuts.
@Flyk see, thats what snapchat is for
Hum, average donuts are the worst.
@AviD no it's not
@M'vy heh. nurd
@M'vy surely average doughnuts are, by their definition, average
14:44
I can't believe that there are people in 2k15 still misspelling the word "donut".
@Simon he's not misspelling donut
he's spelling a different word, doughnut
different food item, different word
different food group, even
doughnuts are 90% carbs
Nobody has a damn clue what you're talking about when you say those are 2 different things.
donuts are 100% heaven
@Simon have you tasted the difference??
IT'S A DIFFERENT SPELLING, HOW CAN I TASTE THE DIFFERENCE OF A SPELLING?
@Simon ITS A DIFFERENT FOOD
14:45
NO IT'S NOT
are potato chips and corn chips the same thing?
or better yet, chips and fries
I HAVEN'T SAID A SINGLE WORD SINCE YOU STARTED TO SPREAD THIS NONSENSE, IT'S TIME TO STEP UP
(make that crisps and chips for the brits)
@Simon WHICH WORD WILL YOU SAY THEN, DONUT OR DOUGHNUT?
Did you miss the whole thing when @ThomasPornin quoted something about "doughtnut" being the original spelling and then he changed it to "donut" to make it easier for foreign people?
@Simon apparently
14:47
"he" being whoever was commercializing them
also, apparently at some point in history people got confused and started associating two different, yet vaguely similar, foods
@Simon "foreign" being "American" in that case.
@ThomasPornin I think thats the opposite
@ThomasPornin Wasn't it an American trying to make it easier for whoever in Europe?
"foreign" means "not American". Dont you know anything?
14:48
@AviD Hey, I am translating words in a sentence written by Simon. Give me some slack.
@ThomasPornin lol
pls
admirable, yet ultimately hopeless, even for you.
@Simon Ah yes. Indeed. Well, not exactly -- it was for "foreigners" (from the point of view of a New-York-based entrepreneur) but not specifically "European foreigners".
Only "foreigners ready to buy an automated doughnut-making machine".
@ThomasPornin ah, so anybody west of the Mississippi, or south of the Mason-Dixon line.
14:51
Yay, I managed to remember something useless again!
those crazy uneducated hicks.

2 hours later…
16:42
@AviD Now that's a tautology if I've ever heard one.
17:21
@DavidFreitag Do you like chill beats?
@Simon I'm listening to some super chill monstercat right now
@Simon Awww yeah super chill.
17:36
Really?
Cyberlympics?

Q: Found suspicious php files in upload folder

GeorgeI found 3 php files in a htaccess-password-protected upload folder on my server: 1. default_folders.php 2. factory.php 3. HMAC.php Each of them contains a variable string, eg: <?php $sKe6sG2L4YbX='T9chqQ'^~EPSe0Kwz;$ydQI='w0`hmP'|'1DZK&a';$EG='^DI'^'3(~';$un3E4gl='w~o'&/*Jo'. ...

Not sure what to do with that.... is there any possible answer besides, "Be advanced enough to walk through this one step at a time?"

... use a debugger?
@JeffFerland THANK YOU FOR QUICKLY CLOSING IT, FFS!
See @AviD, this is the kind of mod you should be.
Keep trying, son.

@AviD You didn't :) a commenter did
It's pedantic because the expected value IS the information content if the information content is uniformly distributed
so entropy and information content are the same thing
so it adds zero to the discussion
19:53
Pretty much any answer mentioning entropy is wrong if you're nitpicky enough.
@AviD In the Starcraft community foreigner meant "not Korean". So calling yourself a foreigner was perfectly fine.
Any diagnosis that involves Lupus is wrong
[yes, I have family members with Lupus, so no, I'm not an anti-Lupus supporter - just thought the parallel was funny]
20:10
@RoryAlsop Oh lord. Do people honestly think this is a a good way to recruit..
you don't see doctors or lawyers having "olympics"
