2 hours later…
08:23
Aww... It's lonely in here...
08:48
morning @Stephane
Morning.
@ColinCassidy @Simon whyy, you can just bring the donuts in to bed with you
to eat them in bed. not one of @Simon weird canadian donutsex acts.
09:09
select @readyForToday = case (@firedUpAndMotivated & 1) when 1 then 1 else 0 end;
update mug set coffee=1,withMilk=1,isFull=1 where mugOwner = 'kalina';
speaking of mugs
where is Simon?
afternoon
salut
@kalina heh, nice
Having a bookshop near work is awesome. Their selection leans towards bodice rippers, but they do have some terry prachett novels.
@kalina - I don't know if you hang out on Music.SE, and if you did, this guy's post is likely to be closed, but an amusing read for you?
09:17
books make excellent fuel

Q: Where on earth do I begin?

user1002617This question has been answered sufficiently, and I have posted a new, more specific question as was suggested. So, this probably isn't the usual post you might expect going by the title - this isn't "how do I do what madeon/skrillex/etc do PS what's a DAW/VST" - it's a long one, but please bear...

@RoryAlsop I only hang out here
this was his updated one:

Q: Beating 'Blank Page Syndrome' and Projecting Intent

user1002617I posted a question earlier, which a number of people pointed out was coming off too broad to make for a good post, and it was suggested I boil it down to a smaller bite, so here goes. I have been a music nut for my whole life, more passionate about music than probably even some musicians - but ...

tl;dr: How do I notes?
sometimes nobody seems to care that I specifically chose you guys
09:17
0_0
He has a nice setup:
@kalina yeah - we care :-)
That he does.
@RoryAlsop hey I'm going to spend thousands on kit before I even work out how to use my DAW!
but can't write music
DJ'ing is simply a matter of purchasing some decks and a music collection
oh, and about 5000 hours of practice
but you can't buy the practice, so lets spend more money on decks
09:19
@kalina I use my DAW like a complete n00b. Mostly I use it as a drum sequencer :-)
for practicing
WHOA. @RoryAlsop this will blow.your.MIND.

Q: Are the Weeping Angels Timelords

PyrodanteIn the End of Time the leader of the Timelords states: "The vote is taken, only two stand against and will stand as monument to their shame: the Weeping Angels of old!" (36 minutes into End of Time part 2) And the two Timelords and standing, covering their eyes like the Weeping Angels. The Docto...

@RoryAlsop you're not responsible for anything DAW related though in the final track, are you?
all you need to do is know how to strum your harp
@RoryAlsop only has one monitor, 0/10
@kalina correct, thankfully
@AviD Nah - they are just 'like' them
@kalina and set fire to things
and stomp on some flashy stuff
@kalina lol
@RoryAlsop I find this more sad than funny
did you musical types see the review of the pono player.. arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/02/…
09:21
that somebody assumed they could buy their way in while still creating it themselves
should have just spent the money on engineering fees if he wanted in that badly
@kalina well, actually - yes. So desperate to be good now!
@RоryMcCune I had such high hopes...
he would have probably learned more from being sat next to somebody while they build his track for him, anyway
@kalina some of the answers are excellent. To summarise: unplug it all, and plink on a piano.
yeah
the fact he seems to have more buttons suitable for triggering samples and FX than actual controllers for inputting music is a good start (lol)
Yeah. I did. And eh, as someone who takes music too seriously... I think the pono is an odd idea ;p
09:25
@JourneymanGeek who's making a porno?
@kalina heh
well, aside from Zak and Miri, obviously.
@AviD Neil Young. That old fart.
@AviD you're a fan of Mr Smiths work then?
@JourneymanGeek the business case is odd too. If you are mobile, you aren't going to be in an ideal sound environment, so high quality may not be as necessary.
09:26
precisely
@RоryMcCune who isnt.
@AviD I still haven't got round to watching that one
@AviD some people, weirdly enough
@JourneymanGeek My car stereo has better audio than the pono, but that works in a car environment - where you have better control over speakers, ambient sound etc
I have good headphones and a decent/cheap setup for it. Outside? Mobile phone and fairly boring headphones.
09:28
@JourneymanGeek yup
@RoryAlsop and I just noticed from the review, they're using Android 2.3 ?!?!?
wtf @ "How do I notes"
looooooooooooooool
so yeah, there's a reason I don't use Music.SE
(Actually, I wouldn't mind paying for a good, solid, sensible oldschool mp3 player. I've been eyeing creative's new mobile phone Dacs instead...)
I can't tell you the reason, its out of line with my usual level of modesty
that's still too smug
I fail at this, I'll just be silent
09:34
yay!
...
why would people want a portable headphone amplifier? (advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/Gadgets.4/FiiO.406/5510053/…)
surely they're generally loud enough as it is
"When I try and compose my own tracks, I never even begin to feel as though I have traction. I come from a motion graphic design and programming background, so I'm used to having a pretty concrete and clear methodology for accomplishing certain things."
@RоryMcCune depends on the quality of the headphones, high range ones require amplification
@kalina ahh I C
@kalina normally it has a much better level of question - I just thought this was worth sharing as it is so out there
09:35
Higher impedence headphones, and in some cases cause onboard head-amp stages suck
tho, if you really want to get the most out of an amp, line level outputs are nice
@RoryAlsop no I know, it was me over generalizing something that happens on all SE sites
impedance was the word I was trying to remember
@JourneymanGeek I still like my sony mini discman :-)
and then I couldn't work out how to fit it into a sentence
should have paid attention in physics instead of being stoned
@RoryAlsop: at home I use a little maudio fastrack I 'borrowed' from my dad, and a cheap chinese headphone amp with switchable outputs
'Timezone all. How goes it?
09:37
@JourneymanGeek I get the most out of an amp by stacking them on top of each other, cranking them up, standing back and hitting the strings:
lol
different amp ;)
I'd like one of these in future jdslabs.com/products/48/o2-odac-combo
Probably after my monitor/video card upgrade
I feel that even once I have the goodies like the access virus I'm going to order soon(tm), etc, that my favorite piece of studio hardware will still be the big knob
@BarryCarlyon cold and clear so nice
@BarryCarlyon happy diurnal isomorphism!
@RоryMcCune good to hear :-)
@RoryAlsop \o/
09:39
@RоryMcCune you'll have had a good view of the full moon this morning?
was awesome from here
@BarryCarlyon Morning!
@Arperum tips hat
@RoryAlsop it was super-bright last night, you could easily have gone walking about outside with just the moonlight
I keep being told that AKG K702s are nice
anybody here tried them?
er. I remember someone had em on RA
09:45
@kalina AK 47's are ok. Dependable, but not really exciting.
well, they're not supposed to be exciting, they're supposed to have a flat response
@kalina: I tend to like the fisher FA003s
@kalina yeah, you could flatten somebody, under the right circumstances.
@JourneymanGeek they're a strange shape
@kalina you're a strange shape. #simon
2
09:48
why do no high end headphones come in pink
I seem to recall AT did ;p
my ath m50s are a bit battered and it's time for a change
primarily prompted by me sitting on them yesterday
@AviD I am so offended by this that I was briefly unable to respond and I'm still struggling to compose myself
@kalina your sarcasm is weak.
I'm not being sarcastic
on a scale from 1 to 10 of how offended I am, that comment measured a 2.5
as comparison, your face is a 10
2
wooot!
@kalina which part is the offensive bit, the #simon hashtag?
09:58
@kalina Custom in ears. :) Any color you want it in.
@TerryChia sure, in ear phones sound like the way forward for what I'm actually going to use them for -.-
@kalina heh - out of context that sounds really sweet and complimentary
@RoryAlsop is it still a if the additional meaning is revealed through context?
@kalina taken literally, sure, I guess :-)
It reminds me of that song by the Beautiful South - Perfect Ten
@AviD because I'm more of a pear than an hourglass
like, might as well talk about how you actually do have a tiny penis
10:01
@kalina whats wrong with pears? they're delicious.
@RoryAlsop Then you realized a) it was said in DMZ, b) it was said in DMZ by @kalina c) it was said in DMZ by @kalina to @AviD, or d) it was said in DMZ by @kalina to @AviD and someone starred it?
@RoryAlsop inorite?
@TildalWave hey, are you saying that when I say things, they're mean?
are you saying that I am a mean person?
@kalina No, I didn't say which of the 4 options is the right answer :P
sure, but it's heavily weighted towards me
10:03
@TildalWave It will work on the star wall once @RоryMcCune shuffles 'em
@kalina or @AviD's face :)
what the actual fuck
that plane looks like it's basically free falling
@kalina that's called a stall
:-p
the amount of very public plane incidents in the last year is making me paranoid
@kalina no it looks like a ballerina doing a pirouette
10:04
(Apologies, I couldn't pass up an opportunity of snark)
@RoryAlsop well at the moment I've kind of got a bromance between @AviD and @Simon on the pinwall, need to see if I can fit that in. Unfortunately I can't re-order stuff (d'ya think SE would accept that as a change request)
what's likely to happen is that a few airliners will take a big financial hit (they know how much these things will cost them in terms of lost business, compensation), make and make no changes.
Malaysia Airlines will be thinking about changes, since the relationship isn't linear.
and accidents/incidents will start to become less prevalent again
it has to be clearly marked when you're purchasing tickets that the plane is a prop plane in EU
I'd personally never board a 2 prop passenger plane
unless it's a Cessna
I flew on one in Canada
or other small planes, but a 2-prop cow in the sky ... no way
10:12
it's the one and only I've ever been on
never ever again
I know air flight isn't exactly smooth, but there is a line that just leaves me in a paranoid daze
even Dash 7 is a 4-prop plane
which is prolly what you flew in in Canada
no it was more like a vibrating tube of death with only two rows of seats
definitely the closest I've ever been to involuntarily wetting myself
@TildalWave no it was smaller than this
@kalina as opposed to how often you voluntarily wet yourself?
10:14
@AviD ...
ah OK then at least it was smaller ... which means it has a lot better chance of recovery with one engine burn out
I'm thinking about starting like a youtube weekly diary type thing
figured if I could get two drones with the auto follow functionality
Hm, I don't actually know if (turbo)props are less safe than jets. The impact of a major incident is less (lower speed, less fuel, less people involved); but I don't know about the likelihood of incidents involving props vs. jet.
@kalina yep - obviously hadn't got the airspeed in time, the climb to get over that block of flats dropped it into a stall, and everything else was uncontrolled
Oddly enough, props don't turn up a lot in the commonly recommended literature
10:17
@TildalWave I flew from the age of 4 in the co-pilot's seat of a twin turboprop plane, that my dad would fly at about 15 feet above the sea if seal-watching. Incredibly safe planes
private airlines and helicopters, yes. That shit'll kill the fuck out of you.
The single rotary engined Beaver floatplane he flew for a while was very scary, because water
@kalina I have no idea what you want to use it for. I just popped into chat at the point you said you wanted pink ones. :)
props? No major mention. The worst I heard was a cessna pilot innapropriately keying his mic on ATC, contributing to an incident involving two other planes
like this
10:19
@RoryAlsop ah yes you see that's what I called "small planes" ... it's definitely not a "flying cow" category
I'm fine even with single engine small planes
the engine goes out and it becomes a glider ...
not exactly the case with 100+ passenger planes tho
Well, it all comes down to - aeroplanes are incredibly safe
@RoryAlsop commercial airliners are incredibly safe.
@Tinned_Tuna no, even the crappy self maintained ones in weird third world countries are safer than roads in developed countries
I've flown in ATRs pretty often.
If you have a fear of death, driving should be the first thing you give up
flying is orders of magnitude safer
10:22
driving is only dangerous because of all of the men on the road, the women who do their makeup on the road, and the alcoholics
@RoryAlsop I blame oxygen :)
@TildalWave and that killer - DiHydrogen Monoxide!
I'm in talks with somebody at the moment to do something truly shocking
I am scared.
Someone hold me
10:25
@RoryAlsop yes, in comparison to the road network, flying is generally safer, but if commercial airliners to private airliners, private helicopter services, etc, commercial airliners are, by a surprising margin, much safer
auditioning for five people to form a 1990s style girl group
@kalina o...kaaaaay
@RoryAlsop not to be in it
we would just write the music, produce the music, hold all of the copyrights...
@kalina How's that shocking? I thought you're giving up chocolate or plan on doing all you clothes shopping in H&M from now on ...
@TildalWave I gave up chocolate already
and I shop in the same shops as everybody else
10:27
Marks & Spencer?
@TildalWave who shops there
?
well - the over sixties, obviously
no idea, I'm a terrible shopper LOL
not mid-fifties truckers from Des Moines
@TildalWave Hennes & Mauritz obv
@kalina I don't even know who that is
10:28
I googled H&M
it became obvious to me as it was in google's index
Safe Search on or off?
'sif I turn safe search off
10:31
@RoryAlsop you know I didn't know that when I went in one ... bought me some set of panties, I think they were size M ... came home and they were elephant size LOL
.... okay .... not sure I should ask ....
that explained why I was the only one under 60 in the shop :)
@RoryAlsop pimps
in Israel M&S is the main source of the fancy pink suit.
Hahahahaha - I can't picture that
@AviD you sure you're not thinking of H&M?
that's the main source of Hello Kitty clothes
10:34
@TildalWave H&M?
@TildalWave ah no, thats for kids. I'm talking about fancy pink suits for manly men.
@TildalWave Here, I think the bottom tier is Primark, then BHS, then H&M... but I'm not 100% sure. I sit outside while Claire/kids shop for stuff.
huh? That's not how M&S looks like here
I'm not prepared to face almost Ikea levels of hell in order to buy something
that might be another reason why I even went into that shop ... it was not crowded
@RoryAlsop "Ikea levels of hell" :)
someone should make a song about that
10:37
I have a friend who seems to enjoy going to Ikea.
I do not understand them.
that's just not right
It is the portal to hell - google.co.uk/…
mmm this morning I have Pi :)
Pi 2 to be precise
@RoryAlsop Jesus!
@RоryMcCune yay
10:38
2 Pi 2 or just Pi 2 @RоryMcCune
got two Pi2s one for the missus to put Win10 on and one for me to put linux on
@TildalWave I actually quite like that song. And the kids love his work - especially "Bacteria" and "Skullcrusher Mountain" - which is a wonderful love song, from the perspetive of an evil genius
Ah yes I remember you saying :-)
2 Pi or not 2 Pi?
@RoryAlsop it doesn't really work for me, sorry :)
10:40
@TildalWave okay, how about this:
when I think "Ikea levels of hell" I hear thrash metal
@RoryAlsop Diabetes!!
what I want is Diabolic
I love ikea
it's like doing DIY but only doing a third of the job
and it's all simple enough that even I can assemble it
I don't mind it as long as someone else does the shopping
well yeah, I guess
not really what I'd call quality but hey we now live in the age of fashionable furniture so you don't buy to last anyway
10:44
not a fan of public places
@TildalWave meh, it's not about quality
I'd much rather be able to leave glasses around without worrying about marks
or randomly drawing on my desk
@CodesInChaos Does this means, there are several things depending on RSA algorithm ? — bhagwanparge 8 mins ago
I think somebody is trolling me.
I still want things to actually stay stable once assembled. I can change the top surface
sure, stability is important
but I don't buy things with a view to them lasting more than a few years
@kalina I prefer to design and build furniture from sratch - and would do that all the time if I had the time
sounds like too much effort
I mean, ultimately it's not different from any other creative process
but the learning curve to master woodworking makes it too much effort
10:48
So I tend to use decent quality wood - especially for beds
can't beat a sturdy bed
or table
@CodesInChaos On SE? Noooo! Impossible!
@kalina learning curve is short and sweet
also, I prefer my hands to remain nice and soft
and not covered in cuts and bruises
me with a hammer sounds like a bad idea
@kalina ah - yes, that does happen a bit :-)
10:50
@CodesInChaos I'm guessing stupid
@CodesInChaos have you considered suggesting migration to Worldbuilding? :D
> I wants know which institutions / organizations / services will be affected by this ?
love this ^
@RoryAlsop heh at the insider Threat thing, looks like I'm on right after Emma
This one has a good answer, the other one has two outstanding and a good one. Why close the better one, just because the other is newer? — Jens Erat 17 mins ago
@RoryAlsop wanna take that?
Deep purple walls with bright lighting looks awesomely pink
I can't wait
^need to relish my moment in the sun
10:58
@RоryMcCune first time for everything
@kalina one reptrain and away I go
sec, upvoting @ThomasPornin
@kalina :op
<wikipediaAds> If everybody upvoted me once today, I'd be rep capped already </wikipediaAds>
can we have it as a big pink obtrusive bar and make it so that when somebody clicks the X to remove it, it upvotes one of my posts at random

Taylor Swift writes lyrics based upon what's going on in her life
I wonder if you could write lyrics about what Taylor Swift is writing lyrics about
maybe if you wrote lyrics about all the things Taylor Swift doesn't write lyrics about
maybe you could go completely meta and write lyrics about Taylor Swift writing lyrics
@kalina I thought you did dance music, didn't realise lyrics were a feature...
11:10
@RоryMcCune diversification
you're right though, dance music lyrics are all like "WHEN DARKNESS COVERS THE SUN... THERE'S STILL A LIGHT TO SAVE MY SOUL - SEND ME AN ANGEL"
@kalina ahh. I'd go all (early) arctic monkeys then and do stories of nights out and the like
whereas I'm currently talking about "a-zig-a-zig... ah"
@kalina ahh well the DMZ is a bad place to find inspiration for lyrics that teenage girls will like I fear
unless you want to write songs about Doughnuts and irritable security people
which may not work well with that demographic
@RоryMcCune oh sure, I dropped six pills my brain went to the hills and still I'm standing here with my heart feeling ill
not sure it's really tween rated
@kalina well they seem to let kids looks at things like Nicky Minaj, I can't imagine it gets much less kid friendly than that
11:16
Nicki Minaj is just a singing ass, though
psh
let's just recreate the greatest hits of All Saints, to the backing tracks of the greatest hits of the Spice Girls, with music videos like Backstreet
and call ourselves the KLF
@kalina hai
hello
@kalina it's 3a3am it's 3a3am it's 3a3am eternalllll
11:22
@TildalWave I think merge works here
@RoryAlsop not sure, because the older one already has an accepted answer
I'm not opposed to merging them tho
OP of the older question is active on the site so he'd see it
@TildalWave yep - I'll maybe add a comment too - to make sure he sees it
if it was up to me I'd merge while the other one doesn't have an accepted answer too
@RоryMcCune heh
@kalina that sounds like heavy metal
thanks @RoryA ;)
11:29
@TildalWave np - your guidance helped, and hopefully my comment will let the OP update as needed
@RoryAlsop what's funny is that the original question now still has 4 close votes as a dupe of the one that was closed as a dupe of the original one and now merged with it :)
Want me to close with some bogus reason just so you can reopen?
actually ... you can do that on your own,... I need coffee LOL
@TildalWave Weird - I went into the review queueueueue and said 'leave open'
will see if it will let me now close and reopen. it should
@RoryAlsop try first closing it as a dupe of that one ... to see what happens
maybe we all get 10,000 rep
worth trying :)
@TildalWave pfffft - it wouldn't let me. So I chose 'offtopic'
@RoryAlsop does OP get now two notifications? "Your questions was closed ..." and "Your question was reopened" ones?
I wonder why this got downvoted so much: security.stackexchange.com/a/80830/10211
oh my I'm absolutely starving
severe munchies
I don't even really fancy eating anything, I just know I need to insert food
I wanted to star @kalina, but it's funnier if I star you, @JourneymanGeek :-)
I prefer it if you star him, too
11:56
@TerryChia No idea, but I lost track of why certain things are voted on the way they are long time ago.
