@AviD I'm actually using mitmproxy a fair bit. It's pretty solid.
But that's because I'm on Linux.
@RоryMcCune Cool!

Trying to decide if I want to post a question here. Not sure if it's a good fit.
The question essentially breaks down to "Is there a simple 'home user' accessible defense against this?"

Q: MS13-081 doesn't update Usbser.sys on Win7 Embedded

IsziWhen deploying updates for MS13-081, on multiple systems running Windows 7 Embedded SP1 x64, Usbser.sys is not being updated as it should be according to the KB Article. An affected system reports the update as installed, and will not let me run the installer again without uninstalling first, bu...

The above problem was detected not by any updating system (MS Update, WSUS, and a couple others completely missed it), but by a dedicated vulnerability scanner.
Assuming the "home user" is knowledgeable enough to work through such issues, but not at all inclined to set up such an advanced application/server on their network specifically for checking these things, are there other ways they can monitor for failed updates when Windows itself doesn't recognize them?
The problem here appears to be a bit of naivete on the part of Windows Update. When the update is done running, it just writes a registry key or whatever to say "yup, this update was applied". Then any subsequent attempts to run the update just check for that key and say "nope, my work here is already done - screw off" without actually checking the files or other things that the update was meant to change.

@AviD "ZAP is kinda sucky" says the OWASP Israel chapter leader :op
tut tut
although in seriousness, if you've not looked at it recently it could be worth your while revisiting it
there's quite a few new features in there which are kinda cool (e.g. plug'n'hack)

@RоryMcCune He probably was the "if it does not cost thousands of dollars it's not worth using" type of consultant. :P
I mean, he has checkmarkx dammit!

@RоryMcCune well hey, I also dont drink the company kool aid.
or eat the company brownies.
but okay, indeed I havent seen it in a while. It was basically Paros, which while not the worst proxy, was pretty darn awful.
@TerryChia oh yeah, I paid so much cash monies for that.
problem is OWASP, like Apache, has waaay too many projects, the majority of which are either broken, useless, pointless, duplicate, or plain stupid. Or several of these.

@AviD We already discussed this in here like 543634 times. No point going through it again.

Anybody that has an open source project just dumps it on OWASP's lap and expects them to take care of it from now on. Not enough filtering.
@TerryChia did we? Oops, sorry.
nevermind then, carryon.

@AviD I'm pretty sure we rant about OWASP once a month.

heh. but OWASP is awesome!

Jun 1 at 7:09, by Terry Chia
Anyway, OWASP has got some good stuff (Top Ten!) but it's sad to see the crap it produces at times.
Jun 17 at 10:53, by Terry Chia
As far as I can tell any OWASP member can create one. That's a recipe for creating crap right there.

7:12 AM
@TerryChia So, by "we" you mean you?

@Iszi Meh, follow the conversation. It always involves @RоryMcCune and @AviD.

@TerryChia that, right there, is shocking information. Simply shocking.

@AviD Why? We are like the three people in this room that still occasionally talks about infosec stuff.
2
There's a good chance that any actual conversation that has to do with infosec will involve us.

@TerryChia that, right there, is sarcasm. Simply sarcasm.

7:40 AM
@TerryChia :|
I'm very inclined to dig through your message history in the last 6 months to find the percentage of poop.
I wonder how scriptable that would be...

@Adnan That's not really accurate. You need to get all the messages in the past 6 months that relate to infosec and see what percentage of that is from me.

@TerryChia Yup. Including that
Hmm.. I think scripting won't work in your case

It's probably not that many messages to go through manually if you filter out anything said by Simon or kalina.

After all, you're not @Simon or @Kaliana
@TerryChia Hehehehehehe

Heh.

7:52 AM

I want to say "Shame on you both!", but then I'd also be defending Simon, so ... carry on.

@AviD #Simon
According to Twitter, this is @Simon

@Adnan That can't be right. There's a distinct lack of donuts in that picture.

- Red sleeveless. Check.
- Backwards cap. Check.
- Instagram filter. Check.
Yeah, that's @Simon
Poor dog..
and that's coming from someone who hates pets
(outwith geckos and crows. They're awesome)

@TerryChia Have you not realized that "donut" is just a euphemism?

8:39 AM
@Adnan Guess what you're getting for Christmas

@Kisunminttu a framed picture of @simon?

@RоryMcCune Ouch...
I think the only thing worse is getting a tattoo of @simon.

@RоryMcCune A giant donut with the glaze being a picture of @Simon

@Kisunminttu good call!

@Adnan no a gecko

@Kisunminttu I don't want a gecko. I want a crow :(

what is a gecko in GoT parlance?
@Adnan get both, you can feed the gecko to the crow!

I'll probably have it for a few days and set it free after that

eh, I need to check on the mynah eggs we might have accidentally killed

@Adnan You just wrote that geckos and crows are awesome. Gawd, nothing is good enough!
@Adnan please tell me you're on the DMZ on your phone

I haven't mentioned any use of SHA1 or SHA2. That detail can be easily changed. How do you know what I use to come to that second problem? For the 'same user' problem on different sites, I would use the hashing of not just "user + password" but "serviceName + user + password". It would solve the two problems you mentioned. Note that for problem 2, one can prehash the 'user' or the 'service + user' part, so the second problem is not even a problem. But your answer is the best answer to my question. Many thanks. — randomA 5 hours ago
sigh How many times do you have to repeat “don't roll your own” before it gets through?
Oh, well, it could be worse, at least the guy who said “don't use SHA-1, use a secure hash like SHA-2” deleted his answer

Q: CISM exam question

J PriestleyI passed CISM in 2008 for fun (flew through it- this is relevant not just boasting) however I didn't have the necessary ISM experience then and didn't get it before the 5 year deadline ran out December last year. And as information security isn't part of my core skill set this didn't bother me to...

this OT?

and in Finland you get a penalty if you miss the doctor's appointment

@AviD You are confusing @Adnan with yourself.

9:20 AM
@Adnan This is kind of funny, I sent you a message with the appointment time when I booked it, I told you today via message when you have it and I called you 45 min before the appointment that you need to remember it : D
I'm sorry I'm laughing

@LucasKauffman Definitely not.

@Adnan next time I'll call you 15 minutes prior to the appointment :)

@Kisunminttu No no, I understand
The problem is that once I dive in work, I forget almost everything

@Adnan yeah, I know that... did you have an alarm/calendar entry set? And did you contact them already?

@Kisunminttu Called them. The lady gave an appointment on the 29th. I've set two alarms on that date and time.
Of course, I'll be penalized for this one as well.
I already paid 40 EUR for the last one :(

9:28 AM
@Adnan Sorry to hear that, love :( Excellent that you got an appointment not too far away from now. And make a calendar entry for the other appointment as well. And I don't mean the one you just received.

@LucasKauffman Hands down, cringiest thing said on the DMZ.

@Adnan Oh please. That's not even in the top 10.

@TerryChia @Adnan @LucasKauffman It's pretty bad.

and that he has him as his desktop background

@LucasKauffman Well in reality I try to avoid holes (don't!) and still write tests to stress the whole thing (fuzzers et al.)

Q: How to protect source code locally when traveling with it

SkeithI will be traveling abroad for several weeks on a business trip as a consultant. I will carry a laptop with an IDE and all the necessary source code so I can make changes on site (which is the purpose of this trip). The boss is very worried about the source code being stolen. I have put forward...

That question is a good candidate for protection, now that it has hit the super-collider.

@Xander Shouldn't that auto-protect them?

/ cc: @RoryAlsop @RoryMcCure @AviD @LucasKauffman @Any-Other-15K'ers who happen to be around.
@Iszi Doesn't appear so. We're starting to get repetitive answers from 1 rep users.

@Xander Too recent for me to protect.
You will need a mod.

Shog9 on April 08, 2014

Protected status is an often-overlooked feature of Stack Exchange. It’s based loosely on Wikipedia’s semi-protection, and like that tool is meant to be a reaction to persistent abuse from anonymous or unproven participants: when a page attracts a lot of noise or vandalism from outside the community, Protecting it reduces the amount of clean-up needed later on.

Protected questions are not answerable by folks who haven’t earned at least 10 reputation from activity on the site where the question resides. This effectively means you need to have posted an answer somewhere else that’s attracted an up-vote or a question that’s earned two. …

@TerryChia Ah, I didn't realize there was a difference.

3:48 PM
@TerryChia @Xander we seem to have been mod abandoned @AviD is likely sipping a skinny half-caf soy latte whilst reading ruby code on his #shineymac and @RoryAlsop is probably doing 6 monthly HR reviews for his team at $largebank

@RоryMcCune Oh well.

@Xander Note, I said "shouldn't" - not "doesn't".

4:16 PM
Can't do it from my phone atm
@RoryM Wonder when LinkedIn will pick up on this "does Rory Alsop know about human resources?"

4:46 PM
@LucasKauffman you're not suggesting that people who know the aformentioned absent mod should go to his LinkedIn profile and endorse him for HR are you....
that would be terrible :op
that said "governance" was pre-suggested for him by linkedin which is barely better...

@Iszi lots of spam or low quality answers auto-protects the questions IIRC but the added traffic alone doesn't
I wouldn't mind if it auto-protected all SuperCollider questions on beta sites tho, I get sometimes really annoyed by what crap questions land on there and how many seem to want to answer it yet again in the same way that 10 others before already had
they also represent a nightmare for mods, with influx of new members with some having no problems suggesting what's good for the site and what isn't even though they opened one single page on it in their whole life
actually I'm not even that pissy today as it might sound like, why am I complaining? :)

@TildalWave meh if my highland rural bandwidth can handle it, I'm sure his fancy-dan lowland mobile can :op

7:32 PM
@RоryMcCune Time loss is less of a problem than seeing the same stuff four to five times in a day.

@FEichinger I have a cunning plan... reduce to 25% of the time you have been spending and you can still see All The Stuff!

@RоryMcCune I wasn't thinking so much about the bandwidth as PAYG

@RоryMcCune But what do I do with all that free time of mine then?

@TildalWave hmm I'd guess he's on a contract with a data allowance but I could be wrong...

@RоryMcCune Eww.
If I'm not mistaken, the people I'm following are mostly posting crap about the Zoe Quinn controversy ... Not something I want to waste time on.

You do not want to know.
I would be better off not knowing, too.

Funny that I have some declined and disputed flags on Space Exploration and I'm a mod there LOL
(sometimes I'm not sure and I flag it for other mods to look at it)

10:20 PM
@TildalWave What gets my goat is when I flag a post as low quality for not answering the question, and then the author comes and improves it, and actually does answer the question, and I have no way to unflag it. I just have to sit and wait for the inevitable reviewed to come through and (rightly) dispute my no-longer-valid flag.

You should be able to remove your own flags from the system.

@TildalWave Ah, so you have a mysterious spam flag that disappeared into the ether. I wonder where those go?
@DavidFreitag One would think. They just recently implemented the ability to retract a close vote, but no way to retract a flag, as far as I know.

@Xander that "disputed" is actually quite bogus ... e.g. if I as a mod flag some other flags as invalid, it'll also show as "disputed"

@Xander You should make a meta post.

@DavidFreitag Meta makes me tired.

10:23 PM
i.e. I "disputed" flags raised, which is fine, but UI shows it as if it wasn't

@Xander If no one asks I doubt it will spontaneously be fixed :]

Besides, if I did a search, I can virtually guarantee that someone has already asked for it.

@DavidFreitag there were some threads about that already on MSE, SE stuff is well aware of this
probably not a priority tho

@DavidFreitag Alright you made me go look. Looks like it has been asked for repeatedly.

I noticed that if you want something on SE re development sorted the best way is to nag about it in TL while Shog is there. Repeatedly.
