15:00
Oh no - you are doing Now That's What I Call Music volume 198!
@TerryChia not a spurious comment
there have been parts of my life where I've had to make the choice between food and heat
going to a club and listening to music or buying music
TV or buying record decks
and now I can afford to buy music
I get given it for free and asked to play it
and free drugs
and free music software
so what is the point of being able to afford it?
the grass is way greener on this side of the fence
@kalina my thought would be that the point of money is there to let you do stuff you enjoy .. as long as it's doing that and not making you miserable, it's a good thing (tm)
@RoryAlsop not quite what I was thinking of
@kalina :-)
It is a very weird set of values that are rewarded in a capitalist society. This comes up in conversation at home. Wife=nurse=paid a pittance. Me=infosec=good salary. Me=bit of guitar noodling=potentially loads of money
@RоryMcCune that's a big change from the usual... ;-)
15:16
@RoryAlsop yeah, stick to my principles and make music I love, make a living out of it, tour around dj'ing for a decade, retire, comment on other people's music
or
punch a hole in the international pop charts by releasing pop, make enough per year to buy several private islands, tour in stadiums, retire, do TV or whatever
or, as my so called agent is currently trying to get me to do
modelling to "attract my demographic"
so they can stare at my ass instead of listen to my music
@kalina It was a joke! :)
ahh catering to the 16-24 male crowd...
I know I can never be a true superstar anyway because my opinions can't be purchased
so there will be no "l'oreal: because you paid me to say it"
@kalina I'd like to do a l'oreal advert (only because I have incredibly short hair)
@RoryAlsop In a kilt. That would be awesome.
15:22
this whole thing is certainly an experience, though
I never knew time could move so fast
@kalina wait till you get old, flys in then
my life has been properly turned upside down in the process as well
@kalina that was the Fresh Prince
now I wake up at 6:30 am every day
I go to sleep at 11:45pm monday to thursday
6 hours 45 minutes of regular sleep
feels weird
15:29
heh - you're so conventional
I also stopped playing games and watching TV except rare circumstances
SE usage died off as part of my list of things I gave up to make room for the new thing
although I will keep upholding that the reason I no longer use SE is because of @Gilles
@kalina sounds like this pays better than Internet points tho'
but it's actually purely a time thing
well, yes, actually
it's also kinda like internet points
in fact, there are multiple internet point type things
like... twitter followers
likes on facebook
ticket purchases
@kalina I was about to say that, we could all follow your twitter :op
the ever increasing smile on my bank manager's face
parasitic bastard
soon he will just be a big grin with legs
15:32
God I'm so glad finals are over and done with
@RоryMcCune psh, you wouldn't be following "me" anyway
more like some random commenting on things that I'm doing
@kalina well on the Internet what really is identity anyway
well things like that matter to me
@RоryMcCune You want the philosophical version or the infosec version?
15:34
@TerryChia how about the philosophical Infosec version?
I am not a brand
philphosec
@RоryMcCune Oh, we need @AviD for that.
I am a living breathing person
Sam
Sam
the rest of us are just bots...
15:34
@kalina possibly ... or you're a program generating strings in a chat room
@TerryChia oh I think I've done that here a couple times.
search the transcript...
@AviD Hence the ping.
@RоryMcCune no, I am definitely living and breathing, and a person
@kalina sounds like the kind of thing a bot would say :op
don't make me xD you
15:35
@kalina oh that applies to the rest of us, as well.
@kalina so, come on, be truthful. Is this a distasteful porn thing?
or, for that matter, a tasteful porn thing.
no, it's not porn
@kalina Now I'm almost disappointed.
@FEichinger or relieved?
great, the first thing you say to me in MONTHS and it's about how you're disappointed that I didn't give up on my dreams and just suck dick like the easy route to fame that it is
15:38
sounds like a type of guitar - the Gibson xD
@kalina This is not true. It's by far not the first thing I say to you in months.
"o/" doesn't count
neither does "\o"
@kalina what about \o/
I've kept up my daily greetings for a long time ... You just never responded, so I gave you some space. :(
also doesn't count
@FEichinger it's hard to respond when you're not aroudn/busy/unavailable/etc
15:40
@kalina I figured as much - hence why I gave you space for that to change.
I am going to MCM this weekend
I was originally going in a super outrageous outfit
and now I'm going in stealth mode
Evening @Waffle'sCrazyPeanut
not seen you around for a bit
not looking forward to the smog in London
@RoryAlsop Good evening... (It's night here) :D
definitely won't be as relaxing as gran canaria last week
15:43
@kalina no-one ever does
@RoryAlsop No broadband for a few weeks, then exams, then dialup sucking..., and now --> VACATION!!! (for 2-months) ;-)
So, I'll be around from today... :)
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut yay - how did exams go
@RoryAlsop I don't give much preference to the exams... There's a good reason for that
It's very much due to the education system here... Gotta memorize a lot of things mercilessly to survive, which I hate
But, there are a few subjects (like aerodynamics, kinematics & dynamics of machines) where I can rock (which did go well, as usual) ;-)
@kalina You could have featured in a sneaky Zebra video, they're cosplayer stuff at MCM is usually pretty cool
@RоryMcCune Die Antwoord just get weirder : youtube.com/watch?v=JvMXVHVr72A
15:48
@RоryMcCune I am specifically avoiding a future incident
NSFW probably
BTW, @RoryAlsop: I see a nice gravatar of yours (though I like your previous clown very much) :P
so I am going to cosplay a human civilian circa 2014
rather than going as hatsune miku
@RoryAlsop .... ya know I didn't think that was possible, but yep I think you may be right!
@kalina How is hmiku "super outrageous"?
15:51
I... Improvised the outfit slightly to fit in with the trend of oversexualising charactors
14 mins ago, by FEichinger
@kalina Now I'm almost disappointed.
I know, me of all people making an effort to fit in
... ever since I stepped in this room once six months ago I get a notification every week for your question of the week thing -.-
@Undo That's the idea.
15:58
@Undo Beautiful, isn't it? Keeps you here forever.
With no chance of ever escaping ...
... yup :P
16:14
Oh my... The room is silent :D
My D is silent.
4
@Simon I think the word you are looking for is "invisible".
3
My poor D, always getting laughed at.
3
@TerryChia Let's have a serious discussion, how do you feel about PHP frameworks like Symfony, better than using plain PHP?
Okay, it's not...
@Simon I have zero experience with any PHP framework other than Zend Framework so I can't really have a serious discussion.
16:19
Aw, ok.
And Zend Framework is the most horrible software I have ever worked with.
lulz
But anything else is probably better than plain PHP.
Except for node.js because fuck node.js.
2
right - boiler all replaced - 8 hours work, and 3 minor traumas. Time to drive westwards to see NIN!
later all
@TerryChia This is true.
@TerryChia This is a filthy filthy ... ... truth, but hush!
16:26
Ah... the prodigal son has returned --- welcome back @RoryAlsop :P
You triggered me and gone elsewhere?
Oh... He's gone again >_<
He's more like a prodigal antiquity
Someone's eating maple syrup here, I CAN FEEL IT.
@Simon see my comment re spoons/knives and cutting hearts out.
Shhh, .NET.
16:38
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut TWSS
@AviD Dinner time... One hand is busy eating :P
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut Righhhhhhhhhhhhhht. Eating.
@Simon Any good shows lined up this summer?
Armin van Buuren @ Beach Club too
So far, there's nothing really worth it @ New City Gas
There might be a Hardstyle rave announced this week
Also, there will be the very first Electronic festival in Montreal in August I think
That's going to be big
Yeah I don't see anything i would want to see. Maybe Krewella or Zedd, but meh.
16:42
I think tomorrow they'll be posting more info about the festival
Aight, ping me when you get some more infos.
A bilingual teaser, welcome to Montreal, rofl.
That's my friend's stock volvo ^
(With the exhaust taken off...)
Sounds like my Subaru now that the bolts linking the resonator/axelback gave up hehe
I also constantly do backfires which is kind of fun
But yeah, a V8 is definitely loud in the first place
16:57
I just cannot understand the CSS clear property.
What's up with that?!
clear is rather easy to understand from the spec, really.
That said, I've been using display: table-row and display: inline-block a lot more than float recently.
@FEichinger Whoa! Thanks. That's actual much easier to digest that the stuff on blogs.
Which is surprising, because it's W3 specs
To be fair, once you understand what they were trying to achieve, the specs are usually fairly straightforward
17:24
@FEichinger I thought you hated w3 links?
@DavidFreitag No, w3schools links.
@FEichinger Ah right. Hehehe that place is like the cplusplus website.
18:25
@Terry Turns out the MBP and MBA both have the RAM modules soldered to it and the screen module is put together in such a way that it would be very expensive to repair it if any part of that assembly breaks
18:44
@DavidFreitag ?
@deed02392 I wondered what you meant by MBP but i realized it was Macbook Pro and Macbook Air.
Ah ok. Yeah. I kind of want one cos shiny and OS X, but there are some super annoying restrictions involved that stand to make it more expensive in the long run vs competition
If you agree they have competition...
I have always loved MBP hardware.
I can't speak of OS X, though. Of the ten minutes I have used it, I found it hard to navigate.
@deed02392 It is really pricey but you get what you paid for. It's not some cheap ass piece of plastic you get from Acer or Toshiba. All i can say is don't drop a MBP. Once the aluminum is deformed it will be like that forever.
But, that being said, if all you are looking for is a nice aluminum body laptop, both Asus and Lenovo make nice aluminum body laptops. Asus has more ultrabook sized computers, while Lenovo makes 15-17" ones.
19:05
@DavidFreitag As soon as you get used to the gestures (which should take less than a day), it gets really awesome
@Simon I haven't had the need to use OS X, and i probably wont ever need to. Because of that I'll probably never actually use OS X.
19:19
@DavidFreitag what did you put on your MBP?
ooo ASUS eh
i'll check them out
@deed02392 Windows 7 and at the time Ubuntu 10.04
nice
and apparently things like drivers are no issue whatsoever on any linux distro
Yep, ran any distro i threw at it. I just liked Ub as my main.
so what happened to it?
or did you just mean you're on Windows now
I was only borrowing it from a friend. He got back from a semester in Germany so i had to give it back.
19:22
aw
will you get one?
fuck that's pricey
Other than that i have an armada of older laptops that i use regularly.
@deed02392 2560x1440 touchscreen
512GB SSD raid0
Why did you run Windows on it anyway?
There hasn't be a single time where I absolutely needed Windows.
haha woah factory configured ssd raid0?!
19:24
Games and such.
that's new?
Ah, gaming, right.
I play TF2/Portal 1+2 on it. I'm fine with those and I haven't touched them in a while.
mmmmm touching
The only problem i have with it is the lie7
2.8GHz dual core with hyperthreading
@deed02392 There are slightly less expensive versions with 128GB/256GB SSD and an i5/i3 instead of the i7.
what's lie7?
@deed02392 It's an i7 that isn't a quad core.
19:32
Oh right
lie as in non-truth
lol
i wonder how long such a laptop would last me
Historically i7 has always been quad with hyperthreading, and i5 has been dual with and without hyperthreading, and i3 was dual only with no hyperthreading.
@deed02392 The old version of that laptop was incredibly sturdy. Its only issue was an absolutely shit WiFi card.
i7 quad with HT meaning 8 logical cores?
@deed02392 Yep
i'm pretty sure i have an i7 in my E6410 with only 4 logical cores
so that's probably dual+HT?
What generation is it?
I think first generation i series chips didn't have HT
19:55
first gen i7 had HT
I have a first gen i7 in my desktops at home
they were the triple channel ram
that was what they removed in the second gen
Yeah i should've edited that. There have always been lower end i7s without HT
it's also why I'm holding on to my 1st gen i7 as long as possible
<3 my triple channel ram
Meh, i can manage 32GB of ram with dual channel.
I haven't needed any more than that, even with four monitors.
it isn't about the quantity
it's about the bandwidth
they moved away from it because very few things actually use it
I know, i know.
20:04
so it was unnecessary cost
I happen to do a lot of things that actually do use it though
A lot of top end Asus boards still have triple channel
o'rly? I thought they dropped support on the die
I might actually have to consider upgrading CPU at some point then, though currently my desktop is still holding it's own quite nicely
Hmm you may be right. Last i checked Newegg had at least a few triple channel boards, but it seems they've all gone.
They do have quad channel ram boards though
But those are Sandy/Ivy bridge boards.
Haswell appears to be dual only.
@DavidFreitag I think it's a 1st gen
@AJHenderson I never liked the idea of triple channel. 3 is just not a number that should be allowed. <3 my precious powers of 2
Octal channel ram. Now that's where it's at.
20:16
@deed02392 haha
quad channel does sound interesting though
yeah, a lot of people have four modules these days
@AJHenderson 8 memory slots for one CPU :O
i mean mobos almost always come with 4 slots
@deed02392 That's dual channel
so it would make sense to interleave all those if possible
what? isn't it two modules each operating at twice the speed
you can have just two modules in dual channel on a board with 4 slots, right?
20:19
@deed02392 Depends on the BIOS and how the hardware is configured.
A lot of old dell boards that had dual channel needed at least the first slot for both channels populated in order to post properly
oh right
A lot of older dells also had only two slots for dual channel boards
but in principle am I not right that quad channel could be achieved with 4 slots?
my dual channel boards have always had 2 banks of 2 dimms each
i mean i wasn't saying that current boards with 4 slots were quad channel
20:20
Yes, it could.
and my 3 channel board has either 3 banks of 2 or 2 banks of 3
but that it's typical given the amount of room we get on ATX that we have 4 slots, so if the tech is here now, then quad channel makes sense to adopt
you can pick which based on configuration
@AJHenderson Pretty sure it's three banks of two. They should be color matched
2^2=4, 2^3=8
6? >:-(
20:22
@deed02392 Nope, the LGA2011 boards on Newegg with quad channel all have 8 slots
@DavidFreitag lol! typical
but they are also all ATX boards
well i'll never afford to fill that
can't i just get a 4 slot quad channel board that i can afford to max out
8 x 8GB chips? Cmon that'd only be like $150
no way?
20:24
@deed02392 The quad channel boards max at 64GB
ram was mega bucks last time i looked
@DavidFreitag right, but for triple channel, you need banks of 3 that have all matched sets
you would need 4 x 16GB which is ungodly expensive.
triple channel uses matched set memory for best performance, 3 sequential dimms per bank
20:25
@AJ you're dimm
non-sequitur
None of this sounds appropriately moist.
3
Hmm i think it can go either way, depending on how the lanes are run to the CPU
@ScottPack reyyyy there it is
@DavidFreitag yeah, it can
@deed02392 Ok, i lied. It's closer to $250-$300 for 64GB of ram. But for 32 it's close to $150
20:29
it also supports doing 3 banks of dual channel
and the colors on the board are 3 sets of 2
Yeah i figured.
@ScottPack you been reading Terry Pratchett books?
8 gig does me and a handful of VMs all right
err, nope, I take that back, I was wrong on the color, it is 3 black and 3 red alternating
that's the MB I have in my desktops
lmfao
remember the chav girl on the train who was screaming for ages
"nah I'm not kidding bruv" etc
it was just used in a mix intro by Mat Zo
20:31
@deed02392 hmm, I can blow 8GB by opening one file
@AJHenderson TWSS
@RоryMcCune I read a few, but it's been a while.
@AJHenderson Also, OS X much?
@ScottPack I was wondering if all the moist references were allusions to Moist Von Lipwig
is OS X mega memory hungry?
:|
20:33
Ok now, I've been ignoring this for far too long. WHAT'S THE DAMN DEAL WITH THE MOIST?
@deed02392 So i have heard. Again, though, remember that i have very limited experience with OS X.
@RоryMcCune I don't think I got that far.
@DavidFreitag that's on windows, I just work with rather large files
@DavidFreitag I guess it just uses everything it can and all built in apps get suspended by default or something
@deed02392 I'm using 9 GB right now. Though honestly 5 of it is probably Chrome.
20:33
@ScottPack some of the better later ones, there's a TV movie made of Going Postal too which was quite good
my 12TB raid 5 array is more than half full
@Simon Moist: it's euphemistic and we're all immature
@AJHenderson Nice.
@AJHenderson Ever heard of streaming? Tsk tsk.
when I cover a wedding, I'll shoot 100GB worth of photos and video in a day
20:34
@ScottPack haha
@AJHenderson RAID-Z?
@Simon entirely with non-pirated content
@AJHenderson Is downloading pr0n considered as piracy?
2
@AJHenderson Even if you were wearing an eye patch and a pegleg when you shot the pictures?
@DavidFreitag I don't think I've done any photography as a pirate yet, so doesn't apply
@AJHenderson You're doing it wrong.
20:36
@Simon everything is copyrighted these days, therefore everything is pirated and you should hand over ownership of your bank accounts to the creative industries
@deed02392 is raid-z a reference to something?
@deed02392 Cool, I'll note it down.
@AJHenderson Yeah, it's RAID5 with ZFS
@AJHenderson ZFS
ah, no, it's an NTFS volume
20:37
i linked it to your line on RAID5
NOTE IT DOWN? WRITE IT DOWN YOU MORON.
@deed02392 Close, it's currently 6.0649GB.
I hate my French Canadianness.
@ScottPack Dude.
1,061,891k here
I'm thinking to get tattoo'd "PHP 4 lyf3". Surely, there's no way I'd ever regret that tattoo.
20:42
FUck
I need an ink eraser
@Simon I will track you down and "fix" that personally.
Wite-Out is a registered trademark for a brand of correction fluid, originally created for use with photocopies, and manufactured by the BIC Corporation. History Wite-Out dates to 1966, when George Kloosterhouse, an insurance-company clerk, sought to address a problem he observed in correction fluid available at the time: a tendency to smudge ink on photostatic copies when it was applied. Kloosterhouse enlisted the help of his associate Edwin Johanknecht, a basement waterproofer who experimented with chemicals, and together they developed their own correction fluid, introduced as "Wite...
@FEichinger Don't make me horny.
2
@Xander Nice try, Wite-Out employee
21:36
numerous government articles saying that the UK has a major shortage of IT Sec pros, but the UK gov't didn't put IT Sec on their Immigration skills shortages list ...
how can an upstanding IT Sec pro help if they don't open the door? :)
