12:15 AM
Installing Arch is a PITA. I'm writing a bash script that just follows the instructions with the latest source.

12:41 AM
@tylerl I want to work with that client.

6 hours later…
6:49 AM
Hey, @Simon! What did we say about creating sockpuppets and submitting suggested edits? security.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/24034
(I used the wrong reject reason. Damn it!)

Reject: Edit exhibits insufficient gay pride.

7:08 AM
@TildalWave laweekly.com/westcoastsound/2012/02/17/… Was linked on MetalTech's page...

7:34 AM

@AviD Cortana I presume?

@TerryChia yeah. from twitter.com/cortanaquotes

1 hour later…
8:52 AM
@AviD Starts off OK but then it just becomes ridiculous, like throwing 20 years of some band's history away to trash the latest PoS they released. I found a better top 10 worst list yesterday on Cracked.
now this ... is completely agreeable

9:05 AM
@TildalWave Meeeh.
I agree with the list, not so much with the flavour text.

@FEichinger Oh I didn't even bother reading that, just the list yup
e.g. Coldplay is to me a bit like repeatedly running over the neighbors cat... first 9 chords are OK-ish then it wears flat

9:30 AM
@TildalWave inorite?
@TildalWave yeah. Barely know any of those, but if those I do know are any sign, then very yes.
wait, I disagree about green day. Especially about them being right next to the Jonas Bothers.

Green Day is an excellent band if you like the subgenre.

yeah, "if". and regardless, their first couple of albums were pure bouncy goodness.
wait, does that make me a hipster, if I like only the albums from before they were popular?

@AviD Ehh, Green Day's popularity is basically a roller coaster.

I think that was one of their songs.

No one really liked them around their 4-5th albums.
Then they exploded again thanks to American Idiot.

9:40 AM
I thought american idiot was the 4th or 5th album....?
hmm, I guess I might have missed a few.

American Idiot was 7th.

Green Day used to be different.
Recently, they've become pretty generic rock, but there was some fairly decent punk in the early days.

Dookie was their 3rd. Their 4th-6th albums weren't really memorable although it's still pretty good stuff (imo).

@AviD Well to me they're just too generic pop rock and I'm not sure what I'm listening to when I hear them. Are they Die Toten Hosen copycats, or trying to surf their own wave that's already long time ago hit the beach?

Dookie was their best album ever (IMO). American Idiot has a couple of good tracks, that my kids really like, but they haven't come close to their early stuff

9:44 AM
Hmm. so looking at their wiki discography, I see I missed a few. Interesting.
@RoryAlsop Agree 100%.

@RoryAlsop +1 for Dookie. Loved that album.

and @TildalWave they originally were kinda punk rock / kinda funk.

I used to have a driving tape in the car with Dookie on one side and Offspring Smash n the other. Awesome.

@TildalWave I have never heard of that band at all.

Definitely, Dookie was still their best.

9:45 AM
@RoryAlsop oh excellent. I used to have those paired up also.

Green Day was one of the first few very popular pop punk bands in America.

Dookie was OK ... but if that other list has RHCP in it (which is just ignoramus) then I guess the Cracked one had to put something that'll be a bit controversial

@TerryChia noo, thats off by quite a bit.

@terry wat?
Think twenty years earlier

Clash? a couple decades before GD made it big...

9:46 AM
Popular as in mainstream.

RHCP makes poop now, but they actually used to be a proper band

Clash was mainstream, and they werent the only ones...

something Coldplay just never was, I mean what do they have? Clocks?

@AviD Ehh, Clash wasn't pop punk. They were punk.

Although, and I know this'd is wrong @Tildal, I like Dani California

9:47 AM
oh please. now you're splitting hairs.

Oop - afk for a bit.

@RoryAlsop Magic Johnson?
ah from the new ones
well they still have something in them actually, yes ... Californication wasn't a total garbage
tho I think some bands just run thin eventually, I used to like RHCP better than Living Colour but the latest RHCP albums don't even touch Living Colour ones
Anyone remember Cult?

dammit you guys, now I gotta load up all those 90's alt rock albums. That will be my listening the next few days...
@TildalWave Blue Oyster?

@AviD no, The Cult

@AviD Interesting exercise -- load up all of Green Day's albums in chronological order and hear how much they changed. ;)

9:54 AM
@TerryChia The jump between Dookie and Nimrod - and then to American Idiot - is interesting.

@FEichinger American Idiot was the huge change.

@TerryChia I only remember the first two albums to be pretty decent, the rest I barely even noticed but apparently they just keep on going

@TerryChia well... Insomniac (the one after Dookie) was not so much of a change, but more what I would call "trying too hard" to do the same thing with repeating themselves.

@AviD Hence why I omitted Insomniac. Nimrod was ... different. Can't quite pinpoint how, though.

I know, but it was a huge difference.
not so much change in style, but change in flavor.
something.... elusive.

10:00 AM
You know what's funny? I probably have almost all CDs from Green Day because I'd get them as presents from people that know I'm into punk but they don't have a clue what punk is so they pick up the first they can think of :)
@AviD graduated teenage rebels?

@TerryChia Today I actually learned, you cannot do a || b or a && b in Python.
I've seen not ( ) and 'or' many times in Python code, but I've always thought they're fancy aliases for the actual ! || && operators.

so, "TIL" is so 2013, now 2014 is all about "TIAL"...?

@AviD What's "TIL"?

@Adnan "Today I Learned"
its what all them young'uns say about discovering new/old stuff.

@AviD Well, I guess that explains "TIAL" as well.
@AviD Oho! I should start using that, because .. I'm young and stuff.

10:17 AM
@Adnan Heh.
Python generally does not do fancy aliases.
There should be one and only one right way to do things.

@TerryChia I disagree. There are countless right ways to do it.
Am I right, @Kisuminttu? wink wink

@Adnan no, there are countless wrong ways to do it.

Hmmm.. I wonder why she hasn't been around lately.

All the correct ways are just variations on the One True Way.
@Adnan you put her into a coma.
@Adnan pics or it didnt happen.

@Adnan Your machine cannot support 2 browsers any longer?

10:27 AM
@TerryChia LOL

@TerryChia :D
@TerryChia I need more RAM.

@Adnan Download more then.

@TerryChia Ughhh... then there's growing boobs in order to be fully in character

@Adnan Breast implants.

@TerryChia and what should I do when I want to go back to talking as Adnan?

10:29 AM
@Adnan Why would you want that?

Then there's the problem about becoming Svetlana, I need to get smaller boobs.

@Adnan Inflatable breast implants?

Oho! Now we're getting somewhere.
But then I need to mimic @Kisuminttu's angelic face and lovely smile.
(Rank up those points! Yeah!)

Draw lipstick on the mirror.

@AviD Awwwh! Are you saying I have an angelic face and a lovely smile? :D
I'll call her and tell her to login.

10:33 AM
@Adnan Wrap one of those flexible displays from LG around your face?

@TerryChia Is this one of your fetishes?

@Adnan, you're one of my fetishes
wink

@Kisunminttu Duuude!

@Adnan Dudette!
Wait, I think we got those mixed...
:D

@Kisunminttu queue in @AviD cracking a joke about me being a girl.
2
@Lucas Morning!

10:41 AM
@Adnan no no, that's all @TerryChia. Me, I try to avoid talking about subjects that are sensitive to you.

@AviD Good one!

1 hour later…
11:50 AM
@Adnan morning

@LucasKauffman A NEW AGE OF GREATNESS!!

@AviD LET'S CELEBRATE!
BRING IN THE ROASTED PIG AND FILL OUR GOBLETS WITH MEED!
@AviD had another chat with Shay and Johnny, we are going to work together ^^
all thanks to you <3

yaaay!!
Send the beers via Shay. He owes me one anyway :-)
@LucasKauffman what is it you're going to be doing together?
yknow, if you can say without NDA.

@AviD basically what they have is a service which is focusing on threat intelligence whereas we are focussing on recent disclosed vulnerabilities and mostly publically available information
and reporting this to our clients based on their IT inventory

hehe, "IT Inventory". Only a Big4 HPC can say that with a straight face ;-)

11:55 AM
and now we will cross sell to eachother clients as we have clients wanting threat intelligence and they have clients wanting vulnerability information
@AviD list of software then

hehe
actually, its not really just software though, is it?
I assume it's also all kinds of network devices and etc.

@AviD yes of course

not to mention firmwares...
nevermind, I'm just enjoying mocking you. ;-)

@AviD :<

@LucasKauffman Are you moving over to sales?

11:57 AM
watcha' all
@AviD was that tweet of yours legit BTW?

@TerryChia nope, but we do our sales ourselves

looked a bit #hashtag #heavy

prevents people from promissing things to clients which aren't possible

@LucasKauffman hey, dont frown, Big4 is very respectable!

@LucasKauffman ah hah hahahaha
:op

11:58 AM
@RоryMcCune well most of the time!
:p

@RоryMcCune heh. Clicked a button on their site after downloading, for prize-winning purposes....

@AviD ah so legit book, with a bit of social marketing attached.. fairy snuff

@RоryMcCune exact.

@AviD I get a little paranoid about clicking shortened links with out of character text...

they give out free books once in a while, usually better than decent. Haven't looked at this one yet.
@RоryMcCune hahhaa, yeah cant say I really care... I dont expect anybody besides them to read my tweets.
though I keep getting strange followers...

12:00 PM
@AviD yeah I get some v.odd ones I think it's a form of reverse marketing. If they follow me, I go look at their profile out of curiosity...

@LucasKauffman So, when can we expect you to earn the gold badge for ? :P

@AviD aaand now I'm following you on Twitter

oh damn

@AviD Oh lord. Your twitter feed sucks. Unfollow!

didnt you read my self-description??

12:05 PM
@AviD That self-pitty part you wrote as a half-assed disclaimer to justify your shitty tweets?
Oh yeah, I've read it.

hahha, no thats not what that was!
I.DON'T.DO.TWITTER.

@AviD I don't know, man. You clearly have an account and you do tweet.

not really.

To me, that's "doing twitter"

@AviD and you've personalised your profile pic...

12:07 PM
for years my only twits were the same type of prize-drawing-entry. @ScottPack made me actually "use" it. Haven't really done much with it yet....

@AviD As a joke, I wanted to saying regarding "twatter" with the intentional word play. Apparently, there is a site with that name.

haha, "the anti-social network". I should register there.

In that case, you might also like Hatebook
Where you can add people as enemies and punch instead of poke.

@Adnan hahaha, excellent.
seriously though, that is really awful.
anyway, I have given thought to actually use it for real "microblogging", havent gotten around to it yet.
I should probably start.

@AviD The hell is "microblogging"?

12:11 PM
@Adnan tweeting.
twitting.
twarting.

@TerryChia I wouldn't mind actually :P

@AviD Oh, you mean tiwttering.

what twitter can actually be used for, without it being a complete cockup waste of time.

@LucasKauffman UPVOTING ALL LUCAS ANSWERS ON THE COMPLIANCE BADGE
@AviD I don't know, I find twitter a bit useful sometimes. Ever since @Terry got me on it, I've been getting some decent amount of security news.

@Adnan exactly, thats what I mean.

12:25 PM
yaaay. My commanding officer (in army reserves) just called to tell me I'm too old for training.
So, mixed feelings on that. On the one hand, no training! yay! On the other hand, I am officially too old.

@AviD It's ok. We have @RoryAlsop here to make you feel better.

yeah, except he's NOT too old for that crap.

@AviD Too old for military reserve training. You're still young otherwise.

Being older doesnt mean he's TOO old...
@Adnan whew, thanks for putting it in context!
and stop hitting on me. @Kisunminttu is watching.
.... probably enjoying it, too.

@AviD, this week has taught me that there are two possible answers to that: True or False
I'm gonna go with False...

12:38 PM
@Kisunminttu actually, there is always a range for that question, and sometimes different types. So it's probably "True", but the question is how. And how much.

@AviD Hey man, don't confuse the noob.

haha

@AviD best place EVAR to get security infos... also I like it for travel info (e.g. is the road I'm about to drive down blocked)

@Kisunminttu How the Python course going so far?
Maybe @Terry could give you a hand

@RоryMcCune it's too tricky to be a reliable source, too much noise, you miss too much signal.

12:41 PM
@AviD there is a lot of noise, but I think there are signals there which would be impractical to get any other way

@Adnan Still stuck.

@Adnan Pervert.

@avid RSS doesn't scale well and fewer people use it these days. Traditional "security news" sites are yeuch, places like /r/netsec can be good but miss a lot of stuff

@RоryMcCune r/netsec is pretty dead imo.

@AviD What?
@AviD Oooh.. now that I said it out loud.

12:43 PM
@RоryMcCune oh, oops - RSS is ded?

@TerryChia RLY I was just thinking it more more alive than it used to be.... the Mods are v. harsh on things they don't like...

It's alright, @Terry, @Kisunminttu doesn't need your hand.

@AviD not dead but I see fewer standard blogs/sites with RSS feeds than I used to.

@AviD RSS doesn't get you the latest stuff.
Especially if you are into the more cutting edge research etc.

Can't I get my twerts over RSS?

12:44 PM
@AviD Yup

@AviD Why though...?

good, its sorted then.

@AviD also problem with RSS is that if a blog has one interesting post and a ton of dross, it's a constant drain,whereas if multiple people in the industry re-tweet something, there's a higher chance it'll be interesting...

@Adnan, it's good you gave me a hand last night.
It really helped.

@TerryChia well I dont need to read it within 25 seconds of it being posted...
@Kisunminttu PLEASE keep it to yourselves.
and I dont mean that in the way you did last night.

12:45 PM
@AviD Duuude! She's talking about the Python assignment

heehee

@AviD, just some basic math.

@Adnan hey hey you can call it what you want ... but still

ya sickh bastards.
@RоryMcCune ohh I get it. Python.... snakes.... trousersnakes...

@RоryMcCune It was some math.

12:46 PM
"Python assignment"? Right, no euphemisms there whatsoever.

@Adnan what @avid said, I was suggesting a double entendre.

She needed help with modulus calculations

Booooooooooring

@TerryChia, I think @AviD just made it into a euphemism.

Did they get to list/dict comprehensions yet?

12:46 PM
@Adnan I.... can't do anything with that.

She was doing a Rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock implementation

@Adnan oh yeah baby

@TerryChia Boring? heh
> OMG YOU GUYS!! Still learning if/else?! SO BORING! I learned it like when I was like 5 years old or something.

@Adnan, I'm looking at the Finnish Wikipedia article about modulus calc and I'm wondering WTH was I doing when they taught us those things in school.

Goddammit why are PHP apps the only ones that require me to setup Apache to run locally...

12:49 PM
I have absolutely no recollection of some of the things that are there.

@TerryChia What are you talking about? You can run PHP stuff without Apache.
Well, duh. Of course you already knew that.
If it's a WEB app running over HTTP, it's safe to assume you need a HTTP server. Whether it's PHP, Python, or whatever.

@Adnan Well yeah... but does PHP come with a dev server? (I'll be very happy if it does.)

Some languages, including PHP, do have libraries and frameworks that allow you to write your own (or just import a ready) web server.
@TerryChia I don't know, man. Maybe just decrease the hate a bit and use some of the freed up brain capacity to find the stuff you need.

@TerryChia There's a reason you usually install a lamp stack ... :P
What exactly is the problem you're trying to solve, though?

@FEichinger Actually, you don't even need that. Just run PHP with the -S switch. It will setup a test web server for you without Apache.

1:04 PM
@Adnan Meh.

@Adnan "Microblogging" is like talking about your life to complete strangers, but you are too lazy to do it properly.

@ThomasPornin, it also gives the impression of a "busy" lifestyle

@Adnan Ok, so why isn't this documented in a more obvious fashion? Seriously, php.net's Getting Started page makes no mention of this at all.

@ThomasPornin Do you have a microblog, Thomas?

@Adnan I don't blog. It never appealed to me.

1:08 PM
@Adnan - I don't use twatter properly. I twat a bit around events, conferences and gigs, but really don't like it as a medium

@TerryChia I don't know man, I don't know. I didn't create PHP, and I don't maintain its docs.
@RoryAlsop Oh god! "twat around".

@Adnan So you can't blame me for jumping to that assumption when the docs literally tells me to install Apache can you...?
> Let us say you want to save precious bandwidth and develop locally. In this case, you will want to install a web server, such as » Apache, and of course » PHP. You will most likely want to install a database as well, such as » MySQL.

@TerryChia Alright alright. It's a lost argument anyway with you people.

Isn't that the correct verb, @adnan?

@TerryChia PHP was meant to help develop Web apps, so the documentations assume that if you want to develop in PHP, then you actually want to develop a Web app in PHP.

1:11 PM
@TerryChia Because it's a 5.4 addition.

@RoryAlsop I thought "twert" was what all the cool kids were doing nowadays?

@RoryAlsop For when people post on Twitter constantly in an annoying fashion? Yes, "twating around" is the correct verb.

@ThomasPornin Yeah, but there is apparently a dev server I can be running instead of setting up Apache. The docs doesn't mention this at all.

All I advocate for (in this case) is just a bit of common sense. Going on the assumption that something is intrinsically awful and bad just because other "cool" people tell me it's bad is a bit stupid.

1:13 PM
I don't just sit and nag about why PHP doesn't have that. First, I Google for "PHP that" and then if I don't find it, I start the nagging.

I really don't understand this aversion against Apache ... It's a web server. You're using a web language. Why wouldn't they recommend Apache?

Found by googling for: "PHP dev server"

19 mins ago, by Adnan
@TerryChia http://www.php.net/manual/en/features.commandline.webserver.php
Changed nothing.

@ThomasPornin Yes, but the first thing people new to the language will be reading, the "Getting Started" page doesn't mention this at all.

@Adnan Eh, I don't read transcripts. That's boring.
2

1:14 PM
@ThomasPornin I was just pointing out that the argument is still going even after posting that link.

@TerryChia People do that ? Personally I go straight for the reference manual, which usually lies less than tutorials.

@FEichinger I have nothing against Apache, I just find it a hassle to setup to quickly test an app. Now that I know a dev server exist, I will be using that.

@TerryChia Dude, you're not a noob who's "getting started".
Noobs also write SQL queries by appending variables to the queries, are we gonna start doing that and blame PHP for not writing that in the "getting started" docs?

@Adnan I have not done any PHP development work for 2 years. I think "getting started" is where I'll go to refresh the basics no?

@TerryChia 100% correct. You know what is also correct? Using Google to find stuff you need.
I repeat: You are NOT an IT noob
Don't treat yourself like one.

1:17 PM
@TerryChia I'd say it is inordinately optimistic.
The "getting started" page is unlikely to be up-to-date with the language and best practices, because updating the "getting started" page is utterly boring; no dev is gonna do that.

@Adnan Again, I did not know that PHP had a dev server. My last experience with the language did not come with a dev server. If the Getting Started docs does not tell me otherwise, why would I assume it has changed?

Pointers to actual proper usage of a language will usually be found from answers in stackoverflow, uncovered by Google searches.

@TerryChia Because this is the IT world, and things change all the time faster than we can ever adapt to them?

I say that generically, it works for PHP but also for almost everything from Microsoft.

/sigh I give up. I guess I'm just spoiled by good documentation.

1:20 PM
@TerryChia Good documentation is a rarity. Did you really expect good documentation for PHP ?
People who know how to write good documentation also know how to design a language properly, i.e. not like PHP.

@TerryChia Oh boy, you're gonna have a hard time in the real corporate IT world then.

@ThomasPornin I'd expect something as basic as "this thing exists, it will save you a bunch of time" to be there really...

@TerryChia Release notes is where you should look. I.e. "What has changed since version XXX".

@TerryChia Then prepare for disappointment...

@Adnan yeah, poor @TerryChia doesnt realize that as an intern, he was already ahead of 60% of the "professional" workforce.

1:22 PM
Open-source software lives by the mantra that "the source is the documentation" and proprietary software is even worse.

@ThomasPornin his upcoming disappointment is not just about documentation.

@AviD Well, as an intern he already got the disappointment about salary.
2

I had the same issue, I just assumed that programmers with years and decades more experience than I, naturally knew more than I did.

I have worked on about a dozen of proprietary and open-source software in the last several years. I haven't really seen good documentation in ages.

One at a time, or else he'll just kill himself.
2

1:24 PM
I assumed that the average stupid or incompentent programmer wouldnt be holding down a job, and respected as an actual experienced programmer.

If you're waiting for good documentation to help you get your job done, then prepare for not getting anything done.
2

BOY, was I wrong.

@AviD Prime example, yours truly.

@Adnan you can self-demean all you want, you have already shown more understanding than at least half of the programmers I've worked with.

@Adnan just do BDD then it sorts itself out easily :)

1:25 PM
and that's without seeing an ounce of your code.

Now that's weird, I just wrote a Javascript implementation of some bigint modular operations, which are merely 18 times slower than optimized C.
Either the Chrome Javascript interpreter is good, or I turned into a Javascript god after 24 hours of practice.

@AviD I'm actually being somewhat honest. It's mainly because in all of the places I've worked for I haven't had decent interactions with good programmers. They either don't exist or just too big assholes.

Apparently my code is like 30% faster than the fastest known Javascript bigint libraries, so this must be the latter.

@ThomasPornin In all fairness, the Chrome Javascript engine is indeed good.

@Adnan Ah. So basically you feel that you just haven't had a good mentor (or at least personal example) to learn from, which stifles your growth.
I can relate.
@ThomasPornin You probably didnt' use a framework.

1:28 PM
@AviD vim foo.html

@RоryMcCune :D let's be honest, isn't most development like that?

I don't think it counts as a framework.

@ThomasPornin so, less overhead.

@AviD It is a single tight loop with only computations
the trick being doing integer computations when Javascript's numbers are all floating-point.

@RоryMcCune BDD? Big Dutch D..k?

1:30 PM
@AviD Behaviour Driven Development.

well, I've heard it both ways.
and both equally applicable.

@RоryMcCune That's the official acronym for "ship it when it compiles" ?

@ThomasPornin hey hey I think you'll find it's agile

@AviD You've previously handled Big Dutch Ds?

not personally, no.
but some of the code I've reviewed could have easily been written by slapping one against a keyboard.
2

1:32 PM
@RоryMcCune Oh, I'd be awesome if you give us some Agile presentation

@Adnan not me I'm not a proper dev. but get along to any Ruby conf. and you'll find loads of that kind of thing nordicruby.org
that one combines conf. with spa

@RоryMcCune "I'm not a proper dev." which makes you PERFECT for an Agile presentation

and if this schedule nordicruby.org/schedule doesn't scream new age /agile to you then the fact that the sponsors are categorised as "fire/earth/wind" should

what. I dont even....
what does that even mean??

@RоryMcCune Earth, Wind & Fire ? Groovy !

1:38 PM
@RоryMcCune I like this title: "Make the world less shit. NOW."

@AviD yeah that one is good, I've seen some of the speakers before at Scottish Ruby Conf and some of them are pretty good...

1:52 PM
@AviD Keep your blame to yourself.

@Adnan looooool

1 hour later…
3:06 PM
Oy where's everyone gone now? You're all watching the Bahrain F1 race or what?

3 hours later…
6:07 PM
Not yet. I'll watch it tomorrow. An out in the wilds of Ayrshire this weekend

6:18 PM
@TildalWave Sure was. :-) Great race!

7:05 PM
@Xander I'll take your word for it :) Didn't manage to sit through an entire race in prolly more than a decade. I pretty much stopped watching it after all those rules and regulations fiascos that seemed to have been favoring specific teams.

Starting Spring Project the First

7:46 PM
The new rules make it much better @tildal
Proper engines and more torque than grip

@RoryAlsop Yeah I've noticed that, dunno I'm not saying I won't ever watch it, just why I stopped. And they're usually in the middle of sundays, which isn't helping either, especially if the weather is fine out. ;)

8:26 PM
I don't want to jinx it, but.... boy, it's been quiet in here today.
