@ScottPack No, I went through a lot of prep training with my mate, who then did join up, but I got offered a decent IT job with more pay and less explody things
@AviD Horrid? Frankly, not at all. I find many aspects of current events far more unsettling, even ones that other people build real monuments to, and I'd starve if I let them get to me like that. Note also that the film is "based loosely on Packer's life", and it isn't clear that he was guilty. I appreciate eating at a place named the Alferd Packer Grill - history is a great teacher.
@nealmcb yes, but it does sound a bit.... cannibalistic. no?
@RoryAlsop Up and downsides I suppose
and to be fair, I got to see more countries than he did - he got to see more deserts though
that's deserts, not cake, @AviD
:-)
hehehe, howd you know I was gonna misread that??
14:03
@AviD Could be, but there's lots of modern evidence against that conclusion - google it. And again, even cannibals under such circumstances pale in comparison to the deeds of countless war criminals around the globe, honored daily.
Fair enough. But those who know the name, are likely to at least associate it with that aspect.
@AviD I was just trying to clarify that technically it is a vote and technically you thus certainly can vote, but the consequences are different. Feel free to revert/revise/whatever
if I was to open a cannibalistic restaurant, I think that would be a great name for it :)P
@nealmcb naw, nevermind. it was more of a philosophical question....
Hufu was a non-existent spoof product, supposedly a soy-based food product designed to resemble human flesh in taste and texture. The Hufu website was in existence from May 2005 to June 2006. The creators claimed that Milla Jovovich coined the term after hearing about the product's development while on the Eurostar from London to Paris. History Hufu was touted as "the healthy human flesh alternative" for "cannibals who want to quit", as well as a product for anthropology students studying cannibalism. According to its website, hufu is also "a great convenience food for cannibals. No more...
@ScottPack exactly!
@Iszi finally watched it. that guy is gross! but, howie's reaction definitely is amusing.
14:06
@Iszi Before watching part of the video, I thought this was about xenophobia against Germans
@ThomasPornin lol
@ThomasPornin Oh no, that would be foresightedness :)
@AviD Cool. There are places in Arizona and Utah that have amazing and delicate cryptobiotic soil that is killed if you walk on it. Perhaps like primitive attempts at cryptograpy, that would tremble at the approach of someone like @thomas :)
@nealmcb hehe
@AviD - offtopic?

Q: Product recomendation for system to track security waivers

bostonBobMy company has a very outdated and homegrown solution which is used to track various security waivers. These waivers represent exceptions to security policies. For example one waiver might be for root access to a prod box. The waiver would have all the details of the requester, the server name...

@nealmcb wow. I had never heard of that, and would never have guessed
14:14
@RoryAlsop Title sounds off-topic, and the one-boxed text doesn't seem to help the case. Can't delve much deeper into it just now though.
I think it could be saved the same way as the palo alto one, maybe
nah
it's not a security question at all
mod-hammer time
boom!
</boomtime>??
for offtopic questions @Scott has a hammer he loans us
@RoryAlsop good closure call. Also excellent comment, giving him direction to start off in.
@RoryAlsop boom! goes the dynamite!
@ScottPack i'm really loving that show, btw. +1 to you.
@RoryAlsop i prefer to just kill offtopic questions.
14:21
I am the god of hellfire, and I bring you
boomtime
With Fire.
gonna need Thor's fire hammer
@RoryAlsop thats thunder hammer
@RoryAlsop now see there's a problem... i absorbed all of Hell's fire when I was there last month...
might be because of my evil
that's okay - Dr Pepper will sort that out for you
(I keep thinking I should change my avatar to my alter ego - The Insidious Doktor Mayhem!)
14:24
actually i kinda like being able to just be like "BEHOLD, THE POWER OF FIRE!!!", then I raise my arms and the entire region nearby gets engulfed in hellfire
</REALLY evil>
@TheEvilPhoenix thats not hellfire, thats KDE ;)
LOL
might explain why my KDE environment on one of my boxes is filled with fire...
literally... its filled with fire
@AviD hahahahaha
personally, I think I'd rather the hellfire
@TheEvilPhoenix I like the way on my screen your name just comes up as "The Evil"
no mention of Phoenix at all :-)
just the evil
14:27
@RoryAlsop you should have seen when I had 2666 rep - it only said The Evil and 2666 underneath it
and a user on AskUbuntu was like "OMG ITS THE EVIL!!! LOOK, HE'S SO EVIL, HE NEEDS A 2 NEXT TO HIS 666!!! RUN!!!"
:P
that was a day where i went on a /review spree too xD
whoaaa @RoryAlsop - you already mortarboarded me :)
@AviD ahem - sounds rude
(what does it mean?)
giggity (@ScottPack)
@TheEvilPhoenix twice as evil!
@RoryAlsop I think he's talking about the badge.
@AviD Beat me to it.
@Iszi ayup, though I already had one...
@AviD well I'm out of votes for the day, so that's your lot
there are an awful lot of posts I don't seem to have ever looked at
hehe.... well, I cant get any more, anyway... so thanks!
so my random visit technique seems to work
14:36
Sorry, I was, you know, working.
Do we still need ye olde hammer?
I have a different issue... I look at an old post that I dont seem to have ever looked at, then realize I already commented/voted/answered....
@ScottPack no - do you have fire?
senility is setting in.
@RoryAlsop thats thunder!
@RoryAlsop Gimme a minute
@AviD apparently that happens
14:37
@RoryAlsop what does?
@AviD that's just the noise the fire makes
@RoryAlsop what is?
@AviD I dunno
It's amusing how many people on Sec.SE have the Mortarboard badge, but <1k rep.
hehehe
14:37
This isn't too bad
That means that at least 20% of their rep was earned in a single day!
communism?
@Iszi how does that happen? People join with an awesome answer?
@AviD - Pink Floyd
@RoryAlsop ah, of course.
that would be my 3rd guess, after Diablo.
@RoryAlsop NFC
14:39
I need to get some more answers up
I wonder if the "associating accounts" rep gets counted in that? Meaning, someone would only need to really "earn" 100 rep in their first day to get Mortarboard.
@RoryAlsop I hope you're not just upclicking all my posts... that would get caught as vote fraud.
and, then everybody would know you're just my sockpuppet.
only the good ones - I left the crap ones :-)
@RoryAlsop :)
@RoryAlsop i.e., the ones where you also have an answer?
I've noticed you dont have the sportsmanship badge yet ;)
hahahahahahaha
no - those ones I vote down
:-)
14:41
hehe, you actually DO have that badge, so consider this an apology for the defamation.
Speaking of sock-puppets...
Could you guys look at the votes on this question and see. It smells fishy to me

Q: How should we distinguish blog posts in the Twitter feed?

IsziShould we add a hashtag, or other particular prefix/suffix to the blog tweets, to distinguish them from the regular question tweets? If so, what?

@ScottPack I generally don't like to start witch hunts, but in this case I agree.
We both got gobs of downvotes all of a sudden, and it looks like they all came in at about the same time
@RebeccaChernoff has a down-vote as well for some unknown reason.
Unless it's from @nealmcb
I think all the downvotes were by @RebeccaChernoff. she wanted to float her answer to the top.
14:44
hahahahahah
If they were legitimate downvotes I'm cool with it, it just tripped my wonkmeter
BTW @RoryAlsop - You do know that if you'd use Tab-completion, it would be a lot quicker than using @1234 - right?
Sounds like something she would do.
@Iszi i betcha he didnt! :P
@Iszi tab completion?
14:45
If it weren't for the down-votes, @ScottPack's and @RebeccaChernoff's answers would be tied at 6.
@RoryAlsop type @The, then hit tab
@RoryAlsop We can tab-complete @ names
it should fill with my name
@RoryAlsop - Type @I [Tab]
I just click on the little icon at the right hand side of a message to reply to it
14:45
For us with proper names I actually usually type it out manually, but it's more of a flavor v. mechanics issue.
@Iszi um, no? only if you count downvotes as upvotes.
or I type the first 4 letters of a name - quicker than trying to find TAB :-)
Even typing, it feels more comfortable to use Rory than RoryAlsop :)
I never type the @ followed by numbers
@AviD Ah, yeah.
duh
14:46
@RoryAlsop you should try pinging @Michael in the teachers lounge... theres like half a dozen of them there now...
@RoryAlsop wots the nmbers bit?
@RoryAlsop Are you a hunt-n-peck-er?
@AviD He's referring to my representation of "@ followed by the first four characters".
@Iszi nah - I type around 90 wpm
@Iszi I hit rep cap on 13 days so I am relatively close to those 20% myself.
@RoryAlsop Then what's this crap about "finding" the tab key?
@Iszi ahhh, duh
14:47
@AviD dunno - it autogenerates them
I think it is normal: days where you get much rep are also days where you get, say, much rep
@Iszi - comedy?
@AviD but no Bruces yet!
It is the same thing than to say that most people live in crowded places
@ThomasPornin :-) which is why I don't
@RoryAlsop heh... I made a comment on that, at the beginning of the chatcast......
14:49
@AviD - do you keep multiple tabs open for chat rooms?
not usually.
not usually in more than one at a time....
@Jin - I know you've probably got other priorities, but I'm curious as to where we are on the wallpapers? I'm just itching to get those and put them to good use.
Also, @Jin - I presume the wallpapers will be under the same "Attribution/Share Alike" license as the rest of the site?
@RoryAlsop So did they look coincidental to you?
Morning, @jcolebrand
@ScottPack not really enough detail reported to us.
specifically, "no suspicious voting patterns reported".
@AviD Ok, that's good enough for me.
14:58
@ScottPack not for me.
hey mods
burn worthy not-an-answer?

A: What is important when selecting a VPN provider?

VP01Everything that you listed, can be acomplished with OpenVPN. I think the questions that really matter are: Which SLA you need? Can you survive if, saturday night your VPN doesn't work? if not, can you afford 24 x 7 support?

Do you mean that it still smells suspicious, or that you want more information in general?
the "unusual voting pattern" algorithm is a blackbox as far as I'm concerned, and I've as yet to see any empirical or even anecdotal evidence of its working.
@RebeccaChernoff, any details to share on this? the suspicious voting patterns.
@TheEvilPhoenix It got my flag.
@Iszi it got mine too :P
15:00
@ScottPack it means the "lack of pattern" is no information to me.
and given my 600+ flag weight on Askubuntu, i think i know what i'm talking about ;)
for all I know, it's a placeholder page :)
well, your flag weight here is hovering around the 30+ mark....
kidding! ;)
careful... i've got my combat music playlist running >;)
15:02
careful... I've got @Scott's thunder hammer ready.... ;)
Great. Now I need to find a Thunder hammer
careful, I've got an EMP that could wipe out all computer equipment for 700 miles
Thor! Thor's hammer is a Thunder Hammer! Jeebas, dint anyone even WATCH the movie?
its called a solar flare
Thor is god of thunder.
@AviD There's a movie?
@TheEvilPhoenix hehe, I'm further away than that :D
;-)
How's that? Too busy? I could find one without a background
15:04
@Iszi hehe, actually, was pretty good, considering I was never really a Thor fan.
@RoryAlsop You still use bing? Cute. I just use the original source, you know, google.
@AviD, yes but there's the capability of having multiple solar flares hit th eplanet at once :P
</coronal mass ejection>
@ScottPack bing gives me much better results than google.
having more results isnt necessarily better.
I don't really use bing, but the only search engine in the build here is bing :-(
I know how to search in google, but my bing results are ... variable
@TheEvilPhoenix I think theres a pill for that. Or theres some excercises you can try.
15:05
ewwwwww
@AviD i challenge thee to honorable combat
@AviD Haven't seen it, but I know enough of superheroes (as should anyone geek enough to be in IT Sec) to know who Thor is.
with swords :P
Reminds me of that one time when I ate at the skeezy Mexican place.
actually not with swords... with *bat'leth*s
15:06
@TheEvilPhoenix Sweet! Where do I buy tickets?
so, all you flaggers, whats wrong with that vpn question? except for the first sentence...
Where I'm from, Thor, Frigga and the rest are history, not mythology
@AviD Sorry, which?
@Iszi call 1800IAMEVIL to get tickets :P
Viking country up our way!

@AviD its not the question its the answers :P
@AviD notice i pointed to an answer
not a question
I await the Fimbulwinter, when Ragnarok shall take the land
@RoryAlsop You are not from Scotland ?
answer, singular. and I think the question IS the problem.
Scots are part viking.
@AviD Right now, the answer is the only issue. Previously, the question was much worse. Now, I think it's sort-of passable.
15:08
^ that
@ThomasPornin If you head north in Scotland, then get on a boat once you hit the north coast and keepo heading north for a bit. Orkney was sold to Scotland about 300 years ago, but the roots are very much Scandinavian
We learned a form of Old Norse at school, and the sagas were mandatory reading
@Iszi actually - one bit of the answer is ok. I think defining service requirements should be something you think about, as it impacts your resilience plans
@RoryAlsop Oh, then yes, you are indeed part Viking
(except my Mother is Australian and my Father is English).... ahem
@RoryAlsop But that's not an answer, it's a comment.
@Iszi - agreed
15:11
Hence the flags.
thats why we both flagged it
we can move it to be a comment on the question
On my part I can only boast from my mother's mother, coming from a Normandy-based family for countless generations, so there must be a bit of Viking blood in all that.
its more suited for comment than question
@RoryAlsop acceptable. IF you mark the flags as valid :P
so - we all agreed? I'll pop it over to comment status?
15:12
@RoryAlsop That's what "not an answer" is for, right?
yah
if you mark the flags as valid :P
@Iszi but that was the question.
@Iszi its either for move-to-comment or purge
at least according to AskUbuntu people :P
@Iszi one of many things :-)
and ..... done!
but, if you rule that out as an answer, the question becomes... not worthy.
15:13
I think it is - it is around how to select
and, the answer was pointing out some issues with it.
not a very good answer, but it is an answer to that question, nonetheless.
I think the answer was a tangent - it just said OpenVPN does this. It didn't answer the OP's question
@AviD And that's why it's a comment, and not an answer.
@RoryAlsop +1
and thats why we flagged it
his 2 points around SLA's should also be on the question list, but only in addition to the others
15:15
Give the OP some time to come back and improve the post I say. @RoryAlsop has done more than enough already.
Oh my, Minitel is gonna die next year.
@ThomasPornin What is that, some cell provider?
@Iszi It's what France used before the Internet.
Home-based text terminals with integrated modem
they were great - I saw one years ago (thought they were extinct)
Holy crap... what's the keyboard layout on the Minitel 1?
The Minitel is a Videotex online service accessible through the telephone lines, and is considered one of the world's most successful pre-World Wide Web online services. It was launched in France in 1982 by the PTT (Poste, Téléphone et Télécommunications; divided since 1991 between France Télécom and La Poste). From its early days, users could make online purchases, make train reservations, check stock prices, search the telephone directory, have a mail box, and chat in a similar way to that now made possible by the Internet. In February 2009, France Telecom indicates the Minitel network ...
15:17
@Iszi It is the standard French layout (azerty)
what's horrendous is what they had planned
the first Minitel was initially meant to have an alphabetical layout: abcdef... in that order
Minitel has only been active in France I guess :P
@ThomasPornin Oh, right. Still have yet to wrap my mind around thinking in global cultural terms sometimes.
signing off for my afternoon commute - see you all later
@Mvy Yup; we tried to sell it to Belgians but at some point they woke up
15:18
I remember getting the result before getting to university by Minitel :P
LOL @ThomasPornin
me too... gnite all
nite
Good night noises everywhere
I know it's irrational for me to think this, but those guys are dang lucky to be getting off this early.
@Iszi It is not irrational
right now, it is about 16h20 in UK, I think
15:20
@ThomasPornin Correction then, it's ignorant.
so that's really early
@ThomasPornin No, that's 20 minutes late for me.
In my company in France, normal working hours are like 9h30 - 19h00
@ThomasPornin If they're in-line with GMT, it's 1521... and in that case it is early.
@ThomasPornin 1.5-hour lunch break?
@Iszi He, that's France. Food is important.
@Iszi UK uses summer time, so right now they are at UTC+01
(Yes, it is called summer, regardless of the meteorological evidence.)
15:24
@ThomasPornin Dunno about over there, but it's definitely summer here.
Well I'm doind 9h30 - 18h(30)
No @ThomasPornin: that's France-> Food is life!
@Iszi But for what "here" ?
@ThomasPornin FL
Or, for that matter, just about anywhere in the contiguous 48.
Major heat wave from what I hear.
@Iszi FL, 48... so full of obscure abbreviations and lack of context... so you must be American. And, therefore, FL is Florida (and not Liechtenstein).
@ThomasPornin Who needs context? Plug in my house number and street name to Google Earth without city, state, ZIP, or country, and it still nails me dead-on!
15:41
Wow. This is perhaps more ergonomic, but horribly un-intuitive: "The numeric keys of the classic Dvorak layout are ordered: 7 5 3 1 9 0 2 4 6 8"
@Iszi As far as I know, the only evidence for Dvorak layout surpassing qwerty comes from a study by US Navy, which was trying to decide whether the Dvorak layout was worth buying the patent from Dvorak -- and the study was conducted by none other than Dvorak himself.
@RoryAlsop Re: "this is a bit of a shopping list type question (see the FAQ) so is off-topic here" - the faq doesn't address that, and I'm not sure we want to discourage them. I think the question was off-topic to the extent that it wasn't focused on security issues, though I can certainly picture attacks on the exception system and they should consider that in their selection process.
@RoryAlsop The OP specifically asked if OpenVPN met his needs. Is it true that someone converted an answer into the comment there now? Why? I suggest changing it back.
@Iszi My work hours are 8000-1700 with an hour for lunch. Seem more reasonable?
Oh, this is just downright wrong. It's the same temperature and humidity here as it is at my folks'. Hell, even the wind is pretty close to the same.
16:05
@ScottPack A bit. Mine's generally 0800-1600 with a variable time period for lunch depending on what option (on-site cafeteria, off-site restaurant, or bring your own) we decide to take, as long as the work gets done.
Officially, I'm salaried, so really as long as my projects get accomplished.... In truth, keeping standard office hours is expected. I could probably get away with compressing my day a bit by fiddling with lunch, but I really enjoy going home.
@nealmcb Just a note: It would seem my earlier commentary on that topic was off-target. I was thinking of a different question. That said, "OpenVPN fits your needs" really still isn't an answer. If it was that easy to determine and declare, the OP wouldn't be asking the question.
@ScottPack The simplest explanation for my "official" pay rate is "compensated hourly for up to 80 hours per two-week pay period, no compensation for overtime".
@Iszi The answer futher claimed that OpenVPN met all the OP's requirements, and it seemed that OP didn't know if it did or not. What is wrong with someone sharing their experience? Not the best most expansive answer, but more of an answer than a comment.
@Iszi That sounds like pretty boilerplate HR text to me :)
@nealmcb I think if the OP doesn't already know that it does or not, the OP's question is really asking "how/why" it does (if indeed it does). Under that translation, "it does" is not a real usable answer.
So, options are: (a) It gets down-voted into oblivion, or (b) change it to a comment where the good parts (suggestions for edits to the OP) might get noticed.

Q: How do I pick a VPN provider?

IncognitoThere's a lot of VPN providers out there. Some are free, some are for a fee, some report to the government, some inject ads int your HTTP, some are in other countries, you might not have any real promise of security when using these services. How do you go about shopping for a VPN provider that ...

Further, if you think the question is about selecting vpns then it is a dup of this one.
So the way to rescue it may be to change the focus to openvpn. And I don't see why assertions that it meets the criteria aren't helpful.
When you come right down to it, this post is an answer to the one I just oneboxed (and which it even cites)

Q: What is important when selecting a VPN provider?

PeanutsMonkeyI am new to using a VPN service and came across the past at How do I pick a VPN provider? however am unsure if I need to use a personal VPN service or if OpenVPN fits my needs which are as follows; No logging whatever so e.g. encrypted servers, no tracking of originating IP address, etc Minimal...

2 hours later…
18:22
@nealmcb I'm in complete agreement with you.
I think it was a poor answer to the question, but an answer nonetheless.
If it seems like its not doing much of answering, its because the question was so poor.
@AviD :) (Amazing how much time we spend on these little things....)
hehe
perfectionists...
cue the xkcd about being wrong.... ;)
XD
I'm a moderator - what's your excuse? ;)
kidding, of course...
thankfully, we dont have to do as much as on some other sites - the "community" really does most of the work.
Yeah - you must be doing it for all the fame and glory!
18:24
and for that, I'm thankful... :)
hahaha
and the free tshirts!
well, I was promised free tshirt, at some point... by some body....
Oh - sign me up if there are free t-shirts!!!
hey, now that we have a solid design, @Jin said hed be metaposting at some point wrt swag....
oh, speaking of... @Jin, arent there also supposed to be all the li'l bits here and there, that should be site'd too?
like the voties, the flag buttons, etc...
what about me and downvoting?
Downvote?
@RebeccaChernoff they claim you are downvoting other answers on the blog question to get yours to float to the top
downvotes on meta dont affect rep from my experience/testing
@RebeccaChernoff numerous times per post ;)
@TheEvilPhoenix, look at the votes cast section q:
i cannot see that section

Q: IE7 and Site Rendering

The Evil PhoenixIn some cases, there is a rendering issue with user pages or non-Question pages, where the left boundary of the page shows up as extremely far off the left edge of the window, and there is no way to fix this from a client perspective. I believe that this is a bug, but as this occurs on my work m...

^ for details ^
@RebeccaChernoff so, the issue was that there was a pile of downvotes, within a short time period, on both a q, and one answer to that q.

18:33
Deleted?
other than looking at "Suspicious Voting Patterns", is there any other way to gather info on such an occurance?
and, do you have info to share on those patterns, @RebeccaChernoff?
@AviD nope
2 downvotes is a pile?
7, in total
q + your answer + @Scott's answer.
Who, me, what?
I suppose it is time for afternoon break
hmm, I think one of your downvotes was more recent.
@RebeccaChernoff not a big deal, they just inquired, since it felt hinky to them.
18:37
Iszi and I compared timestamps, and all of our votes appeared to be within a, roughly, 5 minute timespan.
it was likely just someone going through and voting on the different posts on that page
we see that all over. upvote one answer, downvote another.
I wouldn't say injured is the right word, at least for me, but since there were multiple downvotes per post, within a couple of minutes of eachother, it felt hinky.
I didnt.
say "injured", that is
shit
Disregard.
My excederin hasn't kicked in yet :/
HA! Boooyaa, this time it wasnt me!! IN! YOUR! FACE!!
sorry, disregard that, I've had a rough day....
reeheeely cant get any work done when kiddies are home. :@
18:40
I can imagine
actually I think "hinky" was the word I used ;)
I misread the phrase involving 'inquired'.
i know ... :D
I nearly made it up to the 1st page
@RebeccaChernoff, in case you havent seen this, I think its worth sharing:
Anniversary gifts for geeks
18:50
@RebeccaChernoff I think the reason the votes looked hinky is that multiple votes on one post were within a very short time.
@AviD : nice one :P
@Mvy wasnt mine, read upwards... :)
I can understand the "one user" theory if all the votes are spread across multiple posts, but that is not the case exactly.
