I have a question: Is "cyber", as a popular buzzword, just a drop-in replacement for APT? Or just "info sec" in general? Or something else?
sure, use that 4-day fire they started to cook food. makes sense.
I like the title, though: "deadly fracking explosion"
I am going to use that at every fracking opportunity.
haha, excellent - tumblr for taking the mickey on whatsapp. thingsthatarecheaperthanwhatsapp.tumblr.com
Charity:Water is hoping this year to raise 1/160th of a WhatsApp to supply 3 million people with clean water.
Apparently Sun Microsystems was worth 1/3 of an instant messaging app.
> I've been using Vim for about 2 years now, mostly because I can't figure out how to exit it.
2
okay, this is why I should never go on twitter.
hey @RоryMcCune, q re OWASP EU. I saw somewhere mentioned that speakers wont have their travel reimbursed - do you know if this is true?
that would pretty much prevent me from going.
12:31
cannot believe the amount Facebook paid for WhatsApp
nearly $50 per user
@deed02392 almost twice the price/user of instagram.
@deed02392 is what I've been whinging about all morning.
madness @avid
@AviD This. Is. Brilliant.
@AviD lmao
@AviD yeah looks like you're right unfortunately, that's what's in the CfP document and I don't see anything else contradicting it elsewhere.
12:37
damn. kinda sucky, especially as compared to other comparable confs.
any special case considerations? ;-)
@AviD heh, not sure about that, apart from being on the panel, I've not been too heavily involved.. not sure if they're planning to do anything for chapter leaders.
I've booked my hotel anyway, took the opportunity to burn 260,000 airmiles
oo yeah, Imma chapter leader! dont I get special consideration?
@RоryMcCune wat. 260K?? Sounds like a lot.
@AviD one week in a hotel in cambridge (it's expensive there)... had loads of airmiles built up and they're no real use for shorthaul flights
so as I've no plans for long haul stuff, thought I might as well use them
I should look into travelling by miles, not much use otherwise.
though I doubt I have enough - its expensive to travel from here, and I dont have much miles left.
one of my FF clubs likes to expire miles within a year or two. Sucks.
@AviD did not pass the stack exchange test
12:42
@AviD that does suck, I've had those airmiles building up for years, would have been well sucky to have them expire...
actually I spoke too soon
it has partially passed the stack exchange test
there we go, test passed
/sigh this freaking test suite takes 5 minutes to run....
13:08
this was done rather quietly, compared to the cancellation noise: Canceled OWASP training returns to the RSA Conference /cc @RоryMcCune
13:50
Lady. Gentlemen.
Scott
Woah. It's February and we're having a proper thunderstorm.
I'm glad to see LinkedIn is working out so well for you. :)
@ScottPack :|
I guess I'll just end up adding a Nixu dude and then work my way there to the dude I want to connect to.
@Adnan That last statement makes you sound like a stalker.
I mean, I'm glad that I actually was able to be somewhat useful, but man, this process has been pretty shitty.
This is my first time doing the Introduction thing. It seems like a pretty useful feature, but man, it should at least work.
Also, I'm watching this right now with a bit of a jaw drop.
14:03
That case would make for a pretty neat password cracking setup actually.
@ScottPack do I need to watch part 1 first to follow along?
@AviD I haven't.
@ScottPack them crazy canaadiens.
A 20 yard wide clearcut along the entire border? Yowza, I had no idea.
@ScottPack national borders in general are often pretty crazy.
for example, the famous "Green Line" here in Israel - they drew a border on the map using a magic marker. Turns out the line produced by a marker is not of negligible width.
14:14
Things being wiggly wobbly lines that follow natural boundaries (rivers/ridges/etc) or are drawn through one-upsmanship or because one side just gets tired of yelling over a swamp makes sense to me.
Hence the non-ending arguments over which side of the line a certain area is in.
Even the funny things that happen like with the jut in Minnesota because of a mapping issue, or when an earthquake moved a river in Kentucky and changed a border. I find those interesting, and they somewhat make sense.
The idea of there being enough dickwaving to say, "Fuck all ya'll. I don't care if we are indistinguishable from each other and we have lovely diplomatic status. Here's a goddamn DMZ.
@AviD So since the magic marker is a line of zero width, and not a zone, the trick is figuring out where exactly the line exists on dirt?
@AviD think that might be bad reporting... it's not (AFAIK) hosted at or by RSA... owasp.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/…
@ScottPack no, the other way around - since the "border" width can be several hundred meters, even more in some places, the tricky part is in deciding which side owns the dirt under the line.
@ScottPack starred because DMZ.
@RоryMcCune yeah, in that article they actually pointed out that its not AT rsac, but happens to be nearby.
@AviD so the idea is that they don't bail on the people who were planning to attend, but that they're not seen to endorse RSA
14:24
oh, and its open to RSA attendees - and oh yeah anybody else that wants too. But this is clearly an RSAC thing, right?
@AviD Wait, so the "legal" border is actually the width of the magic marker line as scaled to the map?
I need to read aout this.
@RоryMcCune yeah, that actually is a good solution.
Once I finish writing this email. I have a cousin in town who had a lunch cancellation. Trying to find places to go.
@AviD probably the best possible outcome once it had got to where it was...
oh yeah.
14:26
Hey, @Kisunminttu
Everybody, this is my girlfriend. Be nice to her.
Hey @Adnan
Say hi to her you... security people!
Yes, please be gentle.
@Kisunminttu hello <waves>
Your girlfriend is a piece of quartz with googly eyes? Sounds rough.
2
14:27
Hello!
@Adnan you did warn her about the DMZ people right...?
Hi, @RоryMcCune
@Adnan yeah right, like we'd believe that. hi @Kisunminttu
and Bye bye WhatsApp
Also good morning!
14:27
@ScottPack now that, I'd believe.
@RоryMcCune I did. She's already been next to me while I was on the DMZ many times.
@Adnan <phew> just thinking could be a shock to the system otherwise :op
You seem like pretty nice people... Right?
@Kisunminttu Yeah yeah, everybody here is nice.
@Kisunminttu mostly but some of the language can be a bit.... interesting at times..
14:29
and not old at all.
watch it you
So. I'm looking at a review from a place claiming to be Turkish nearby. Something about it makes me feel suspicious.
> A "varied menu" of "quality" Turkish "favorites" doled out in "generous" portions will "transport" diners "to Istanbul", while the "beautiful" traditional decor will have them "feeling like a sultan" at this midpriced chainlet; "cheery" service is another plus, as are the patios (in Dublin and Bexley only).
Interesting language sounds good!
@ScottPack Are the quotes yours?
@RоryMcCune Give us some credit, we try to limit the inappropriate commentary to innuendo and triple-entendre.
@Adnan No, that's a direct copy/paste.
14:30
@ScottPack Jesus Christ!
Yeah...
I can't tell if someone doesn't understand how quotes work or they're trying to get across a message about the place.
> portions will "transport" diners "to Istanbul"
What does that mean?!!!
I guess it means that they have a secret ingredient...
I think maybe the chairs are on wheels and they take you in the back for....desert?
@Kisunminttu the Turkish power?
14:32
that the experience is just like being there...only with more """""""
Or maybe lots of hash.
@Adnan, most definitely.
Kisunminttu studies to be a nurse, by the way (no you can't ask her to check something), but she has some interest in IT.
She can also travel through time
Some interest, but sadly limited knowledge.
That is also true. With my magic carpet.
@Kisunminttu I guess we'll end up being told to get a room.
Which we'll get, pretty soon, I believe.
14:36
We need @kalina in here ASAP! /popcorn
I need a snack.
@Adnan, I can whip up a room. I'm sorry I haven't told you this before - I'm also a magician.
@ScottPack What do you get for snack?
@Kisunminttu how are you with pop culture references from uk TV in the nineties?
I dunno, depends on what's in the kitchen. Probably a tangerine. We have gobs of those and they're yummy.
14:39
@ScottPack Oh, I'd love a couple of those.
I'm ready with a bag of maltesers and a bottle of sicilian lemonade...
Dammit.... /goes and finds food
It's almost 10am so it's close enough to lunch that I don't want to eat anything big.
@RоryMcCune, I'm sorry to have to admit that I really don't know... at least not yet.
@Kisunminttu magic carpet ref :)
14:43
@Adnan, you will never guess what I have with me as snack right now.
Bacon wrapped porkchop.
Deep fried butter.
Double stuffed banana split Oreo.
@Kisunminttu Did you make Hummus again?
@Adnan, no. Tangerines.
@Kisunminttu Well, there you go. Now you're snack-buddies with @Scott
@RоryMcCune, that was absolutely hilarious, what a shame I haven't seen that before!
14:46
*yawns*
*stretches*
*falls asleep on desk*
@Adnan, I will save you some.
@kalina Drink some coffee. ;)
@Kisunminttu red dwarf, very funny stuff (unless you're @ScottPack)
I think you mean Lame Dwarf.
when you have a face as funny as @ScottPack's, everything else seems less funny
5
14:49
That hurts in my feels spots.
@ScottPack at least people don't say things like this to you:
in Software Recommendations, 2 mins ago, by Angelo Neuschitzer
@kalina Don't the pressure points on your foreskin stay for a day and you can't tell anybody then that your are no geek anymore.
blinks
What the fuck does that even mean?
exactly
in Software Recommendations, 44 secs ago, by Undo
@AngeloNeuschitzer I... Assume you meant "forehead", right? :P
in Software Recommendations, 24 secs ago, by Angelo Neuschitzer
@Undo Oh, yes. On the Skin of your Forehead
Even that doesn't make sense.
no
but it resolves the most glaring problem with the sentence
14:51
Not problem, per se, but definitely the most glaringly obvious confusion point.
bye bye open source
@kalina You obviously hate freedom. ;) channels FSF
@Adnan whats that transportation powder they used in Harry Potter? Maybe its one of the ingredients.
@AviD Floo Powder?
@AviD I know nothing about harry potter
14:53
@TerryChia yeah, thats the one.
@Adnan The movies are fun.
I got about halfway through the first book and had to put it down. I couldn't handle the terrible writing. That was also nearly 15 years ago. I should give it another shot.
@ScottPack The movies suck bad. Except for Emma Watson. And Bonnie Wright.
@TerryChia I said fun, I didn't say fantastic.
@TerryChia I definitely draw a line between good movies and fun movies.
@ScottPack oh yeah, best season for them. I have 3-4 a day.
@ScottPack It seems like he's saying something like if your skin doesn't stay white where you poked it with your finger, then you're not a geek
14:55
well actually they are clementines, not tangerines. But close enough.
something about that thing where it goes white where the surrounding skin is pink, and how long it stays like that is indicative of how dehydrated you are
Starship Troopers is a terrible movie but it's a lot of fun to watch.
@TerryChia Wing Commander is a fucking trainwreck of everything that could be wrong with a movie. Also, fun to watch.
Is it a good or bad thing I have never seen any of the movies you mention?
The Master was a fantastically well done movie. I didn't enjoy it.
@deed02392 if this is the measure of a geek, I'm not even remotely geeky
14:56
@ton.yeung Bad acting, bad writing, cheesy story.
yeah I wouldn't agree it is but that sounds like what he's on about
@ton.yeung Aye. @ScottPack is just an old fogey. ;)
I am just going to sectumsempra this conversation
@kalina What he's saying is that you can tell how good a person is at a task by their skin color.
@ScottPack That's racist.
14:57
@ton.yeung Yes, it's a fun movie.
@ScottPack that's... damn you @TerryChia
@TerryChia What's a little racism between friends?
@ScottPack Deja vu much?
@ton.yeung Film critics.
Film critics aren't even human
we don't have to listen to their opinion
unless they agree with me
and then you have to listen to them
@ton.yeung Assholes and jerkfaces. Sounds a lot like @ScottPack actually.
14:59
@ton.yeung I prefer my movies to be fun, enjoyable, have good acting, good writing, and good production value.
@ScottPack That's racist.
@TerryChia What's a little racism between friends?
^ the two most written phrases in The DMZ
@deed02392 I'll like to point out "TWSS" and the variants.
@TerryChia That's what she said
Entertaining is so very fuzzy, which is the problem with the word. It's not quantitative measure. Things aren't inherently entertaining. You simply find it to be so.
@ton.yeung ...
15:01
@ton.yeung an eye was lost in Ukraine recently
@deed02392 That's possibly true.
There's a video on RT.com
@deed02392 Ukrane?
@kalina excellent
@ton.yeung unamused
15:02
@Xander.
@ScottPack
@ton.yeung ...
...
@ton.yeung yes they can
@deed02392 You want the most used phrase in here? It's @kalina's "..."
...
wait a minute
15:03
icwatudidthur
Does anyone know of a simple, self-encrypting USB drive?
@makerofthings7 use hammer
@TerryChia I think she sets fire to things more often than she pauses for thought
Perhaps a standard USB drive with bitlocker?
@deed02392 "..." is not pausing for thought
15:04
I think we scared off @Adnan's girl.
cryptohammer
@makerofthings7 They exist but it's not worth the many next to just making an encrypted volume on it with TrueCrypt
Nope, I'm lurking in the shadows.
@Kisunminttu Like you always do
@Adnan, it is somewhat of a habit nowadays...
15:05
@Kisunminttu Ah, so you are a ninja. That's convenient.
Thanks @deed0239 I'd love a USB drive with a physical PIN (buttons) that I could just punch in
@TerryChia, oh yes, I am. You should see how gracefully I move in the dark, carefully evading obstacles without a sound.
I'm sure @Adnan will confirm.
@makerofthings7 That'd be cool but you'd pay for it!
Spending money is OK
@Kisunminttu I can confirm.
She's surprised me in the dark so many times
15:08
Just...try to relax.
@Adnan Did you see it or feel it first?
For as many guns per capita as we have I know far more people without them than with. It's just that most people don't have only one gun.
FWIW - I think this might be a good fit for self encrypting flash drives ironkey.com/en-US/encrypted-storage-drives/250-basic.html
Ironkey is really the only one that I know of off-hand.
They have so many choices...
15:15
@ton.yeung no, merely stopping other people from seeing it
@ScottPack True. I'm pretty sure all the people I know who have guns, have at least two. Most of them have more. But they're altogether a small percentage of all the people I know. And that's in the "Gunshine State".
@kalina LOL
Man, I need a job....
@Iszi Same here. Keep in mind that I've lived most of my life in places where the first day or few of hunting season is a school holiday.
@ScottPack Ah, right. OH is fairly gun-friendly too, isn't it? I believe OH & FL are the two states with the highest reciprocity for their CCW permits?
15:19
Could be, I dunno.
@ScottPack @Iszi Most of the studies I've seen have U.S. gun ownership at around 30% of the adult population. So, you're right. Even though we have 9 guns for every 10 people, it's only 3 out of every 10 who own them all.
I as actually thinking of southern Ohio and Kentucky.
@Kisunminttu Still here?
@Adnan, yep!
Hell, my high school (in KY) had an explicit exception in the "no firearms on school property" rule to allow the storage of guns in student owned vehicles during hunting season.
@Xander That seems reasonable.
15:21
@ton.yeung Hmm? Nah.
@Kisunminttu Ducking WhatsApp! It's giving me "connection errors"
Hunting is also a valid excused absence from school.
@Adnan Dammit Facebook!
@ton.yeung That's probably about 60% of the gun-owning population in the U.S. right there.
@Kisunminttu can't send you messages there
15:21
@Adnan, you appear as online to me.
OMG!
Did you guys see who just came in?
the dark lord of the underground universe, if you ask me ;-)
@TerryChia Andrew?
@Kisunminttu Well, that's shitty.
@Adnan Who else? ;)
The vast majority of people I know don't own any firearms, but those who do could personally arm a small eastern European rebellion.
15:23
@TerryChia @Kisunminttu is a girl???
Which seems to fit with the stats given by @Xander.
@AviD :|
@AviD Unless @Adnan is trolling us (I wouldn't put it past him), apparently yes.
@Adnan, we can use FB chat...
@TerryChia well that was why I assumed she wasn't.
15:24
@Kisunminttu HTTPS is screwed at the company. Can't use Facebook.
@Adnan, this is awful. I feel the universe is against our love.
@Kisunminttu It's always been like that. The universe and the DMZ.
(the DMZ, by definition, isn't part of the universe)
@Kisunminttu Give me a call.
@Adnan, so that's why it's so hard to form contact with you when you're on the DMZ... You travel to another universe!
@makerofthings7 those do exist..
@RоryMcCune aren't they stupidly expensive?
unless you have nuclear launch codes on them
15:28
£35 for 4GB
expensive but not prohibitive.....
wow
i was thinking £100+
@RоryMcCune ebuyer.com/…
even better
@Scott - my wife has never shot any kind of gun - so I'm taking her to the Gun Store in Vegas shortly :-)
I find myself wanting something secure to store
Even my son has fired shotguns
I think it's safe to say that I've fired the biggest guns here.
no wait, @RoryAlsop you said you fired those huge Navy guns, didnt you.
15:57
yep - probably. But as we all know...size isn't everything
I didn't fire howitzers. The biggest was a GMPG
sorry, GPMG
yeah, but these guns "go the distance" too, if ya know what I mean ;-)
it's a 7.62mm
hahahahahaha
175mm, beeaatch.
Deep within
...enemy lines
hehe
15:58
@RoryAlsop Wait what?!
well behind enemy lines
hurhur
So officially, @AviD has experience with double the girth :-)
(TWSS)
The duck is going on here?!
@RoryAlsop umm, sounds like x20
(shhhhhh)
I'm on an ipad - decimal points are awfy small with my old eyes
16:00
haha, lol - I didnt have any decimals. that is 175 , one hundred and seventy five mm diameter.
@AviD :(
@AviD My biggest is 120mm :(
2
Now I feel inadequate
Hey - I was only 11, so it was incredible for me
@RоryMcCune Thanks!
@RoryAlsop I bet! Many people would love to get their hands on those.
@RoryAlsop I haven't fired a gun since middle school when I was at 4H camp
16:05
@ScottPack They let you fire guns in middle school?
bored
oh dear, you're talking about measurements and girth
@kalina Still at work?
Not in the school, but when I went off to 4H camp during a summer while I was of age to be attending middle school.
quietly backs out of the room
16:18
the hell are you guys talking about
@kalina thats "diameter".
@deed02392 girth, apparently.
I'm not responding, it will result in me getting starred out of context
how long do smart cards live for?
like fleas. 7 generations in a day.
anyone?
16:24
@deed02392 if they are solid state, quite a while
probably depends on the card
sure, got a rough range?
maybe from someone who uses them regularly?
come to think of it, I guess I have a SIM card that's working 10 years on
TFW you suddenly realise that the emergency phone at work is missing.
@deed02392 are you asking about the hardware, or the certificates? Which would of course depend on the issuance policies.
Theory: The number of people opting to use 2-factor authentication would double if it let them advance one level on Candy Crush.
3
@AviD hardware
@AviD s/candy crush/flappy bird
16:28
ah then, no clue, but probably much longer than important. Also would depend on frequency of use - contrast 8 times a day vs. once a month....
is it bad that I've never even seen what candy crush looks like?
nor I, my adult friend, nor I.
@AJHenderson No. I haven't either. Don't even know what the point of it is.
@AviD well I guess a SIM card is read from quite often
I've heard it is something like bejeweld
16:30
@Xander I think its something about crushing candies? Or maybe you are the one being crushed BY the candies.
@AviD Maybe you have a crush on candy?
only because they were suing anyone that had the word candy in their name and someone on slashdot pointed out the irony that their entire game is a ripoff
@deed02392 ah wait, SIM cards or smart cards? Though "reading" from them would affect it less then putting it in and taking it out.
Although that game could also appropriately be titled "Unhealthy Eating Habits."
@AviD I'm thinking of the OpenSC based OpenPGP smart cards
I figure SIM cards are similar but only basing that on the fact the pin spec is the same
16:32
Phew. Not missing, someone just forgot to inform me about its current whereabouts.
You misunderstand "privacy day", it's like Presidents Day. You know, when we remember and celebrate the dead.
