@Adnan She asked a question, it received a downvote, she deleted it and all the incriminating evidence.

@kalina Let me check..

¿En qué países está prohibido el uso de la criptografía?

@ScottPack @kalina The crypto legality in countries.

@Adnan Affirmative. Granted, it was a list question, which are generally frowned upon.

I have encoded the message using the baseSpanish algorithm =)

3:02 PM
I'm glad I keep screenshots with 5 second interval.

Seriously?

hm?
yeah I could probably have asked why

@kalina You give up too easily. Though, to be honest, it is a bit of a time-sensitive and lawyer-ish topic.

I'm just going to stick to not taking part in this site :p

@kalina I don't think you should have deleted it. I'd have upvoted you just for the support.
@ScottPack Yup
Each 5 seconds, a screenshot, and a webcam snapshot.

3:04 PM
@Iszi when you get as many random people giving you abuse as I do, you only really have two choices: be fiery/bitchy/defensive/fight for survival, or just roll over and cause as little friction as possible
I flutter between the two, and right now I'm in the latter mood

@ThomasPornin I just had a thought, and was wondering if this has been asked around here or on crypto.se: Since cryptographic operations are generally intended to produce output that appears as random data, and truly random data has a small chance of actually mirroring organized data, is it at all possible - even with "strong" algorithms - that hashed or encrypted data might actually match up to the cleartext it represents?

@kalina Excuse my curiosity, but wouldn't agree that this alleged abuse of which you speak is imaginary?

no

Honestly, I see people on your side and trying to be nice to you a lot more than people trying to be mean to you.

oh no I'm not talking about in here
I wouldn't be chatting in here right now otherwise
it's not even SE specific

3:08 PM
@kalina You made that comment regarding the removal of the question from Sec.SE

@Adnan From what I have seen on Arqade. I can kind of understand @kalina's stance.

The DMZ is the chat room for Sec.SE

no I made that comment regarding clarifying why I just rolled over and dealt with it
rather than complaining

Everyone have a nice morning cup of catpuccino, courtesy of George Takei.

Also, I'd have voted to close that question since we don't usually deal with legal topics.

@Adnan From what I have seen on Arqade. I can kind of understand @kalina's stance.

@kalina That's his opinion. I'd like to hear yours

at no point did I say you guys caused anyt of it

I can't, I'm in "roll over and not fight back" mode

3:10 PM
@kalina Understandable.

:|
and the circlejerk starts.

Ubuntu's chatroom. That's new.

Finally!! A flag that I can really judge on. The first message was written in Arabic!

wow flag explosion in ask ubuntu
and it's all foreign
I have no idea what they're on about
ya know has anyone suggested auto translate to the stack exchange devs
it would be v.handy

It's probably just @jrg being a jerkface again.

@RоryMcCune because devs are jerkfaces.
3

3:16 PM
@ton.yeung i do when it's one at a time, but there were loads it would be nice to see something in the chat.se gui

@ScottPack Damn @jrg!

@ton.yeung ahh sorry head over to the askubuntu chat, although they're vanishing quick

jrg
@RоryMcCune not my fault!
whats going on?

@jrg looked like self-deletion?

@jrg Nothing, just passing time calling people jerkfaces. The usual.

3:20 PM
@jrg Don't pretend like you don't know.

anyway AFK a bit I need to go shovel earth

@RоryMcCune Is that a euphemism?

@TerryChia At our age? Not so much.

@TerryChia actually no, the missus bought 2 tonnes of topsoil for gardening things and needs it moved up into the polytunnel.

@RоryMcCune Polytunnel? Is that like a multi-pass?
3

3:29 PM
@ScottPack is that a fifth element joke?
@ton.yeung indeed especially when delivered in one tonne bags that the truck can't bring up your drive!

@ton.yeung 2 tonnes / 1 tonne = 2. So I'm guessing there were 2 bags.
@ton.yeung Sorry, I'm just filling in for @AviD. ;)

> Rule of thumb, 1.5 tons equals a cubic yard.
1 ton covers approximatly: 220 sqft at 1 in depth
110 sqft at 2 in depth
73 sqft at 3 in depth
36 sqft at 6 in deptho
22 sqft at 9 in depth
Depth per 1,000 sqft= yards
1 inch = 3.5 yards
2 inches = 7 yards
3 inches = 10.5 yards
4 inches = 14 yards
1 yard covers approximatly 300 square feet at 1 inch
@ton.yeung a bit more than one cubic yeard
about 4 ft x 4 ft x 4 ft

@TildalWave That's a fair bit more than a cubic yard.
1.333333... cubic yards, to be exact.

@Iszi sorry, my imperial units suck, what can I say
@Iszi OK so if "1.5 tons equals a cubic yard" how many cubic yards per 2 tonnes?

@RоryMcCune Yes. Yes it is.

3:40 PM
@Iszi I'd say I was quite close, since that's exactly 1.333333 then :P

@TildalWave Depends on the specifics of the soil. What's the makeup, how much moisture, etc.

true
that's for topsoil what Rory was talking about, but there's all kinds of them so ... yeah, about

I'm seeing this one place saying that 1 cubic yard of screened topsoil is 1 ton.

I used those coconut fiber blocks often and they come packed in bricks that you just add water to ... you get a barrel out of about 3 pint cube
so if @RоryMcCune has 2 tonnes of that, there goes half of Scotland :))
@ton.yeung That's true? Singapore is only half of Scotland big?
I believe you, I've never been there tho and I don't trust maps too much they use some funny systems where Grenland is about the size of Australia
@ton.yeung I'm trying to cut down on effort :)

@ton.yeung That makes sense. What with Singapore being a single city and Scotland being an entire country with many cities.

3:50 PM
@ScottPack I didn't know how much past the city limits the border is, e.g. in Europe we have some tiny states but most that I've seen are still much larger than the city itself
except Vatican (from those I've seen)

@TildalWave I'm fair positive @TerryChia could speak more specifically, but it is my understanding that the country of Singapore is (by definition) the city of Singapore.

@ton.yeung yep just like that

@ScottPack Yes.
We are just 1 small tiny island.

@ton.yeung Roughly 2 tonnes from the looks of it.

@ScottPack it's not so with, say, Monaco ... or probably San Marino even

3:52 PM
@TildalWave Your European bias does not concern me.

@ScottPack hehe prolly for the better too

@ton.yeung yeah so to get the stuff up the drive we had to shovel it from the bag into the back of the landrover (with a tarp down), drive the landrover up the drive and round the back, then offload, then put in wheelbarrow up to the polytunnel
good excercise

@RоryMcCune Wait until tomorrow, and then the next day.

@ScottPack well I did a bit, then 2 days to recover, now done some more, and will see how I feel tomorrow
@ton.yeung that would be cool

@ton.yeung Like a LandRover?

3:54 PM
@ton.yeung Pretty well I guess.

@RоryMcCune When I did my trenching for the drain pipe replacement it went over the course of 2-3 days and holy shit was I miserable for nearly a week.
@ton.yeung I didn't say it was a good one.

@ScottPack yeah when it's not something you do a lot it tends to awaken muscles you didn't know you have...

You're not too keen on this whole humou?r thing are you?

@ton.yeung This was for my gutters. Instead of dumping into the yard they drain underground to the street.
@ton.yeung Those are usually for groundwater removal. These are specifically for the gutters. The downspouts go fully underground to meet up with these pipes, then they exit through the curb onto the street.
The water table here isn't sufficient to warrant french drains.
I do have a sumppump, but it has yet to run since we moved in back in August.

4:00 PM
yeah, let's pretend they do :)

Our old house was crazy. It had internal underground drains to channel water from underneath the basement into the sump pit. Then it pumped out into the gutter drains that went to the street. Even in the winter it would run about once a day.
That house was built on what used to be farmland and was on an runoff from a nicely shaped hill channel. Boatloads of subterranean water movement.
@ton.yeung The pump works, there's just nothing to pump out.

@ScottPack I believe you posted some photos, if that's the house you're referring to

@TildalWave Probably not.
I do remember one night in the old house we had a pretty big honking thunderstorm that came through overnight and knocked out the power.
I used a bucket to haul about 120 gallons of water out of that sump pit.

not this one?

I just found that on the interwebs. That's when we were discussing the different types of flooring and moulding.
I was living in that house at the time, though.

4:07 PM
ah, then my memory is playing tricks on me .. happens

Reading that transcript is fun. It also reminded me of when my wife worked in the millworks of a lumber yard. She was a office person, but spent gobs of time around the sales people and the actual work people.

4:38 PM
What the actual duck!!
What happened here?

@Iszi Yes, it is possible. Actually we expect it to happen.
A random permutation has probability about 0.63 to have a fixed point (a value x such that f(x) = x).
Therefore, if you use, say, AES, you expect that for 63% of keys, there is at least one fixed point, and the probability of hitting that fixed point with a particular plaintext being a bit 2^(-128)
However, we have no concrete example of such a fixed point, and we expect it to be hard to actually find one.
If someone exhibited a key K and a block x such that AES(K, x) = x, then we would be worried, because such things are expected to exist, but also expected to be very hard to come by.
Just like hash function collisions.

4:57 PM
Dayum, 16GB DDR3 modules. anandtech.com/show/7742/…
@ton.yeung Probably never. :P
@ton.yeung I'm going to go with never, especially when it comes to DDR3.

256kb
depends on which you are talking about
it's different for video cards vs system memory

@ton.yeung Nope. DDR3. DDR4 won't be available for a few years yet.
@AJHenderson That's GDDR though.

yeah, but they still call it DDR5
causes confusion
I was just explaining for ton's benefit

@ton.yeung Which is frankly still more than powerful enough for most purposes.
@ton.yeung Ehhh, core 2 quad is still pretty respectable for gaming...

@ton.yeung uping ram and maybe video card would probably help though

5:04 PM
Pair it with a recent graphics card and you should still be able to play with decent settings.

a lot of games are far more GPU dependent than CPU
or memory dependent
8GB system ram is a bit limiting for some of the larger games

@ton.yeung You need 8 RAM slots for that. I think it only exists on the extreme edition mobos.
@ton.yeung Yes, x79 is the extreme edition.
@ton.yeung Read the anandtech link. The 16GB RAM modules won't be compatible with most of Intel's current offerings.
@ton.yeung No, that is most certainly overkill for most tasks.
That doesn't change what I said.

5:29 PM
32G is difficult to fill up
(unless you're running a Windows server)
(In which case it's prolly not enough)

Jay Hanlon on February 13, 2014

Two weeks ago, we announced the public launch of Stack Overflow in Portuguese, our first-ever non-English Stack Overflow community. Which raises one very obvious question:

Have we lost our minds?

Wasn’t the whole point of Stack Overflow to aggregate as much developer knowledge as possible in one place? To get all the potential solutions together, and provide one canonical set of answers?

We are aware that, “Let’s all try speaking different languages!” hasn’t always worked out for the best. …

6:00 PM
> “I basically learned to code from posts I found on Stack Overflow”
that's disturbing
should not be a goal.

6:44 PM
@tylerl Not be a goal for a programmer, or not be a goal for SO?

@Iszi learning to program by reading SO snippets should not be the purpose of SO
My community ad for 2014 is finally done:
user image
4
Just don't vote for it.

@tylerl Not the sole purpose, I agree. But I don't think it's A Bad Thing™ to see that someone actually can.

@Iszi The problem is that the code snippets on SO aren't necessarily good
you're delivering just enough code to get the job done.

I doubt he actually learned so much from the code snippets alone. Surely the more complete answers had some context and explanation included that helped to teach what the code does.
(Of course, I know this is hardly true of all answers but it is the general SE standard.)

7:00 PM
@tylerl might be a bit much but I "like" it

you know, as much as it may be a mostly worthless site, I still have to admit to using shields up when I quickly want to identify my external IP
well, if I'm not home anyway
if I'm home I obviously just login to my router

hmm, good to know

@AJHenderson my fav is icanhazip.com
v. quick and to the point
handy when used with wget or curl

1 hour later…
8:15 PM
@TildalWave I would say that it's very much in the style of the site itself.

@tylerl I meant that it sends mixed signals ... I'd upvote it because I do like the joke, but that might place it in the banner rotation and some poor sods will actually click on it and think we're endorsing Gibson

@TildalWave yeah. That's why I encouraged people to not vote for it. if It hits 6 I'll have to remove it.

@tylerl you should totally add to your LinkedIn "did web design for Gibson" tho :))

@tylerl does it actually feed off that topic directly or does it still have to be manually added to the rotation by SE people?

@AJHenderson from reading the topic, I think it's fully automated

8:28 PM
it is quite possible that his web design is so crap because his web designer realizes his security is crap too so it's only suitable

@TildalWave He does his own web design. He's quite proud of it.

dear jeebus

9:03 PM

9:21 PM
So anyway - NIST have decided to go with CobIT: nist.gov/cyberframework/upload/…

9:34 PM
@RoryAlsop $$$$$$$$
Which you can use in your business for a mere $50,000.00 per year!

@tylerl hahahahahaha
Nah - I have a free copy

Any time I go to a site and the URLs end in ".aspx" I think -- good lord these people don't know how to run an infrastructure.
And if they end in ".php" I think... "oh jeebus. They outsourced EVERYTHING to malasia"

hahahahaha

@tylerl as in?
/me knows nothing about asp

9:50 PM
@ManishEarth the link just above that comment is an example. There's no technical reason why you have to put the ".aspx" or any other extension into the URL.
the URL should represent conceptually what it refers to. It doesn't need to be (nor should it be) strictly a file path

@tylerl ah. defaults are easy, though :p

From May 8, 1999: Cool URIs don't change
This is not rocket surgery

been there, read that :p

This site runs on ASP.NET, but the URLs aren't things like stackoverflow.com/application/content/question.aspx?questionid=1155532&view=true

@tylerl except the error page

10:15 PM
just ... wut?

Q: If there was a giant human in space?

YodaIf a man suddenly became a giant, that the size of the earth would be like an orange to him. The man gets his hand closer to the earth to a point were he would feel earth's gravity. He sets his muscles loose that he would allow the earth's gravity to be felt and perhaps attract it. First: Would ...

@RoryAlsop what's more worrying is that someone upvoted that

@TildalWave I definitely didn't
My downvote is right in there

it's actually kind of interesting, if extremely bizar
though I did not upvote it

@RoryAlsop VTC too if you have the rep for it
I just added a reason

@TildalWave oh yes - done :-)

10:18 PM
was tempted to go with "off-topic because of WTF" tho

sorry - always forget on my lower rep sites that I can still do that
@AJHenderson interesting, yes, but not astronomy - perhaps philosophy
not physics either

@RoryAlsop true

I'm not so often on astro any more, I find some folks there really anal, so I'll wait they're pushed out by others too, I can't do all the fighting on my own :)

you know, it just occured to me that if someone came in to the DMZ, they might now think that black text usernames were mods and blue was normal

@AJHenderson hahahaha - you're loving the blue, arent'cha

10:20 PM
It doesn't have anything to do with reality whatsoever, and if it tried to ... there's the answer then, there's no real question
AJ is blue?

@TildalWave it has that aspect of physics, yes
@TildalWave he is now

hits F5

@TildalWave abagee abagadi

:-)

wow indeed
grats @AJHenderson

10:21 PM
so much blue

but yeah, I'm doing Video Production
spots opened up because of the Sound Design / Video split of AVP

@AJHenderson when did you get the diamond? Looks like video.SE still has the old mods +you and Rory

@ManishEarth about 11am
EST
so about 6 hours ago

you know what that says for DMZ right?
we can be trusted :)

10:24 PM
@TildalWave erm....yes!

which is scary

oh yes

I've been wandering around aimlessly through the barren landscape of moddum trying to get my bearings since then

@AJHenderson I find @Tildal and @Manish know everything moddy

but yeah, most of the old mods will be going away on video
rory's keeping it and we'll be getting one other
they just gave me mine early because I've been helping with the migration stuff
and I annoyed them enough with mod flag flooding

10:26 PM
@RoryAlsop oh I don't, I just pretend that I do and silently ping @ManishEarth when I'm lost
2

haha lol

many chat rooms, such obscurity, so wow
dang, I still didn't get a hang of this doge style
@AJHenderson you're already met the guys at TL?

@RoryAlsop you know, the best thing about the blue so far though, being able to update my chat messages more than whatever it is you can normally modify them after
@TildalWave I said hello in there earlier

@AJHenderson hahahaha - yes (if you do it to others it is a tad awesome though...)

@RoryAlsop yeah, no, I got my interest in messing with other people's massages out of the way a long time ago

10:30 PM
hahahahaha - nice edit

I used to be (well technically still am) an IRCop
so I got playing around with renaming people and editing posts and such out of my system a decade ago :)

@AJHenderson I saw you mentioned that - very cool

I just have a bad habit of forgetting to reply to a message, then realizing it wasn't clear what I was talking about
being able to go back and add the backref is nice

@AJHenderson that's probably what I use it for most

obviously being able to work on the migration stuff for Sound Design is also nice, but that's a short term perk since eventually that work will be done

10:35 PM
@AJHenderson have you already considered running some community events over at Video Prod?

@TildalWave I'll need to gather some inspiration from other sites I think to figure out what to do
I'm not all that familiar with the whole community events thing in general
right now my main concerns are just getting the site cleaned up and stable and then working on building up some other contributors other than just me
I'd really rather not have 6 times the next highest person's reputation gain

@AJHenderson post on meta for suggestions, no need to overthink it, if you don't know just ask the community. Oh, and feature the meta post so it's visible on the community bulletin, gotta keep meta alive somehow that's your lifeline
Site will clean itself up if the community is healthy

yeah, right now it isn't though

I still beg from people to vote more

and there is a lot of things that we don't have enough high rep users for
like tag clean ups and such

10:37 PM
@TildalWave I still beg for blog contributors

but it pays off from young beta sites I think we have the healthiest community and enough high rep users

am I correct that you can grant permission to talk in chat to someone with less than 20 reputation if you do it explicitly?

@AJHenderson yes

@RoryAlsop yeah, dunno why but all this december - january seem slow regarding "extracurricular" activities

I'm thinking I may start putting effort in to trying to salvage a lot of the people video tends to get that don't have enough experience in video to ask good questions yet. We seem to have a large number of people that come to the site, are interested in asking questions, but don't know enough about where to start to ask good questions
figure if I can get some of them in to chat and help them form their questions, then it might start forming the foundations of a good resource for beginners
not to mention, hopefully fostering an active community in chat
which can hopefully expand in skill as people improve and help get more experienced people to stick around

10:41 PM
some canonical threads in meta can help with that

I'm really focused on trying to get the one time visitors to convert in to repeated visitors and trying to boost community involvement of those that are already lurking
I know some of the names that lurk are likely to be more involved if we can get a community that is more interactive going
just from knowing some of the other sites that some of them participate with

I'm gonna poke around in your meta a bit to see where you're at now
da bleep when did Tim Post move to Philippines?

@TildalWave don't you have to buy me dinner first or something ;)

hehe

historically both meta and chat on AVP was very, very dead
but I'd certainly be interested in your feedback
anyway, think I'm going to attempt the journey home now

10:49 PM
you might wanna go through more posts in meta and add status to them as they apply, so it looks the first orders of business are tended to

11:06 PM
It's hard to judge now actually, because you've just split it. It does seem a bit dead considering there's a lot going on with the site, but what I don't like the most is the voting habits on the site and that there's only 9 people with rep over 1k. You really want more high rep users so they help out and have privileges that let them do that.

@ThomasPornin So, would it be worth posting to Crypto.SE?

11:41 PM
@TildalWave yeah, I'm planning on stepping back some from trying to answer everything right away, give others a chance to step up more
I think the level of aggressiveness with which I answer questions may actually be more of a liability than a boon for Video Production right now
