@ScottPack It actually uses "words" like "Ohai" and "boyo"?
@Adnan Was that a comment somewhere? You know you can post the permalink here and it will automatically drop the comment into chat.
@Iszi Yes. Android OS uses words like "boyo", "ohai guise", "bitch please", and "how may I service you today?"
@Iszi but then how can I show the only part of the comment that makes me look more right?
So I will be at London next week, any recommendations?
@kiBytes For that you need @Poly
I miss him. He doesn't hang out with us much anymore.
15:07
THANKS FOR ACCEPTING MY EDITS, GUYS
even though when I submitted the exact same edits a few months ago you rejected them
+10 points for being consistent
Alright, now I have an issue with whoever declined my flag.
Seriously, wow.
@Simon Get over it, nobody loves you
I mean... hi!
HOW IS THIS COMMENT CONSTRUCTIVE?
@Simon it's not
@kalina Hey, you have no idea whether we've been consistent or not.
15:08
@kalina Yet my flag was declined.
@ScottPack yes I do, I can read
@Simon well don't look at me, I didn't decline it
You just know that last time more rejection votes were cast and this time more accept votes were cast.
If I had the ability to decline your flag I'd have deleted your account by now
@AviD @RoryAlsop It'd be great if you could explain this one. ^
@kalina Please link to the same exact edit that was rejected before.
Note: I accepted those two recent edit of yours.
15:09
I don't want to
I am busy
also they may not have been the same edits
I just wanted to use the word consistent and cause some drama
if only for a brief moment
so sue me
@kalina Good, then. Now, chop chop.
@Simon wasnt me. Though I considered declining your flag, then deleting the comment anyway. Briefly.
@AviD Just for the lulz, right?
Let's face it, it's a very valid flag.
of course. And to attempt to humiliate and demean you further.
If that is possible.
lol
15:13
@Simon yes, but it is also a very valid comment.
Is ever there anything to review in the first/late queues?
@AviD So, when someone requests a banana, you give him an orange?
you better let me earn my badge.
@AviD so I can totes comment ruby-lang.org too :) awesome
@kiBytes They get snatched by other reviewers very quickly
15:14
@Simon if that someone complains that his banana is not orangey enough, yes.
@RоryMcCune sure. though I dont really remember the context.
@kalina Consistency is overrated.
probably something about how to do something securely in PHP.
@AviD well anywhere the "p" word is used ruby is automatically a better choice :)
@AviD I don't think the user did that.
@RоryMcCune really?? how would you pronounce LAMR??
aaahhh, I think not.
15:16
@AviD <redacted snarkiness>
@Simon i dont remember it, link the q?
@kalina No you don't. See, our process could be that every time we see a flag we roll a d20 to decide whether we validate or decline it. Though the results may differ each time, the process is still consistent.
@Iszi Especially when the same exact edits couldn't have been done "a few months ago" because the posts in question are less 2 weeks old.
@Iszi This is not consistent as per Stack Exchange policy
@kalina it should be 2d10 shouldn't it
15:17
@RоryMcCune I'm going to change my username to that.
@kalina Where in StackExchange policy is a fair dice roll disallowed?

Q: Best way to sanitize user input in PHP

user2615947Best way to sanitize User input so things i did when users place data - substr if over limited values found. htmlspecialchars() + ent_quotes + UTF-8 str_replace '<' '>' users input What more things need to be done ?

I think that will be my blog's name too.
ok, you're all trolling me now
I'M GOING TO GO AND LEAVE YOU ALL TO BE SILLY
@RоryMcCune Funny thing was, someone was bitching about Ruby (well... rails) on my Twitter feed earlier today. :P
15:17
bbiab
@Simon ah, right. so yeah, "best way " is not in PHP.
@AviD He's not asking for the best way in general, he's asking for the best way in PHP.
@TerryChia well ya know not everyone can be right :)
Today, a half dozen Ruby package tools I've never even used have been suggested to "fix" the half dozen I already know. Seems sustainable.
@RоryMcCune I feel like he has a point really.
@Simon I completely agree with you. This comment doesn't answer the question. However, remember it's a comment. We have a long history of comments of that sort, some of which are yours.
15:19
@TerryChia it is version, management's a mess (IMO) for a lot of use cases
@Adnan when did you become the voice of reason :op did I miss something...
@Simon and @TerryChia is snarkily explaining that those are mutually exclusive.
@RоryMcCune He does a complete 180 from time to time.
@Adnan And I'd totally agree if someone would remove my comment.
@TerryChia yeah, some of his lady friends like that about him.
@TerryChia I'm tempted to make reference to the fact that he may have (in the crude scottish vernacular) have got his nat king cole, as a reason, but I realise I'm being overly snarky this afternoon...
15:21
@Simon It's an example of the X/Y problem.

@kiBytes If what has been moderated? Sorry, not following.
15:33
@Adnan I am tempted to reply to you. But as it is already annoying me more than the pleasure I would get out of annoying you, I won't.
@RоryMcCune I see it fine
@Xander it is very hard to follow with all this "okular attack" @avid is gifting to us
I proposed an edition in a question
But I can't find if it has been reviewed or not
@kiBytes s/edition/edit/
@TildalWave I can see it, it's just filling the whole window every time it's reposted... at least now I have some idea what being on 4chan is like without actually having to go there...

@avid true, edit =)
15:34
I formally apologize.
@RоryMcCune hehe fair enough :)
and I believe I should say "gifting us" instead of "gifting to us"
@RоryMcCune Really? Not broken for me yet on 1920x1200, though it is on 1600x1200.
Define "broken".
@Xander rly maybe I have my DPI set odd, one iteration completely fills the window now....
15:37
my 1920X1080 is being filled up.
3
@RоryMcCune Ah, height-wise. Yeah, I still have one iteration +~ 4 posts. and width wise, it's still fine in 1920, though I'm getting button overlap in 1600.
@copy ahh no it hadn't done that yet...
@kiBytes I've just checked your suggestions. You have 0 suggestion edits.
It's been filling up my screen height on 1080 for quite a long time.

@Adnan then I believe I left the page without "saving" or something...

Oh my god. You are really bored this afternoon, aren't you?
I'm not.
15:48
@kiBytes Oh no! Why did I click?!
I have lots of work to finish!
I'm waiting for that snow that was promised for the weekend, kinda miss some physical activity...
@TildalWave So you're saying that you.. haven't gotten physical in a while?
@Adnan OK... outdoors activity. There, better?
@TildalWave We got some snow earlier in the week, and now it's hovering around 0F
@Tildal You should probably implement the multiple-girlfriend model I have. It's flawless!
Except when it's not
which is most of the time
Ahh.. I have to rethink my life.

15:53
@ScottPack Yeah I know I was getting updates on Twitter from around that area, and I frankly miss snow this winter, last one was brilliant because of that (lots of dry snow when it was, and never got too muddy even when it started slowly melting, which is great)
They promised up to 20 cm (~ 8 inches) of snow this weekend
See you
@TildalWave That's a lot.
@ScottPack Yes, but the ground is all wet now so it'd take a few " just due to that. And it would be first proper snow this winter, which is always lots of fun :)
I'm keeping my fingers crossed
afternoon
@TildalWave We've had several good sized snows, but that would be an intense amount all at once for us
16:00
@Poly it's been a while ... g'day sir! :)
g'day... yeah, been a busy few months
@Polynomial Hey sweetnes
@ScottPack I'm under Alps here, kinda used to it. It was seriously laughter inducing when it happened at the Black Sea one year when I was there tho, nobody knew how to even walk on snow or had proper footwear for it.
I'll bet
@ScottPack sup gorgeous.
16:09
@Polynomial @Poly! Hey guise look, it's @Polynomial! @Poly is back!
heh

ha, just heard that Bieber got arrested for DUI
@Polynomial Pffft! Abandoning us now that you have a cool job... I expected better from you man!

@Polynomial totally, we used T-Shirts and everything!
@RоryMcCune magic hypnotic t-shirts
16:17
Ooooh, IBM sold their x86 division to Lenovo.
@TerryChia Didn't they do that years ago?
@ScottPack I mean the x86 server division.
wait, really?
wow
a place I used to work at is gonna have a bad time then
Oh, that's interesting.
16:23
in other interesting tech acquisitions, vmware bought Airwatch
so that's the "MDM vendors getting bought by the big boys" trend started..
Oh wow. This is freaking terrible
@RоryMcCune I was going to ask what is Airwatch until you mentioned MDM.
@TerryChia yeah hot sector at the moment 'cause everyone's buying android/iOS devices that are REALLY not designed for large company life
so they have to buy software to try and manage them...
@RоryMcCune I really don't see the point of MDM really.
I like how RedHat deals with it. "Here's your Thinkpad, do whatever you like with it!".
@TerryChia yeah but that's to tech staff.....
16:27
@TerryChia Exactly what @RоryMcCune is getting at. This is for corporate tech support to manage the devices just like they manage their user's computers.
@RоryMcCune No, sales and marketing etc as well.
They have marketing people running RHEL. I thought that was pretty funny. :P
@TerryChia how the flip do they manage user support calls...?
Oh, you mean RedHat, as a company, doesn't manage their user's desktops?
yeah that's super scary
Yup, this isn't a dupe.

Q: What are the benefits of having multiple overwriting patterns for secure deletion?

newuser999 When installing a new AIX server, there is a possibility to use several patterns for secure deletion. My question: Is it necessary to use several patterns? What is the benefit from having several ones?

16:28
amount of time till they get pwned .... -some years..
@Adnan why don't you think it's a dupe of the multiple wipe question?
@RоryMcCune The APAC office is very small though, maybe that's why they don't bother.
@RоryMcCune Actually, he's asking about having multiple patterns.
They have just one guy for tech support issues.
@RoryM As in "Is the pattern 01 better than 00?"
That's clear from his edit, on which I based my edit
@Adnan hmm I read it as why multiple patterns instead of one
but it's part of the same thing really
you don't need more than one
whether you overwrite with all 0's or patterns
is irrelevant
16:30
@RоryMcCune No no
@Adnan elighten me then?
The question is: In one pass, is 01 better than 00?
@Adnan nope
@TerryChia I think you'll need to validate that. What does "they" mean here? Because I'd be shocked if the entire company only has 1 tech support guy
@RоryMcCune Great. Then that's the answer.
16:31
one pass with any data uniformly over the disk is fine
@RоryMcCune With which I fully agree.
@ScottPack APAC/SG office which is mostly marketing and sales people.
but to me that's the same q. as multiple passes against one pass
@TerryChia Oh, so a specific office that has a small subset of people is managed in this specific way. I do see how that equates a multi-national company doing something badly. :)
@RоryMcCune Could you please expand on that one?
16:33
@Adnan well the screen he shows offers the chance of overwriting once or more than once, with different patterns. the patterns bit is window dressing the key question is once or more than once, that's the same q. as in the other one :)
How are these two the same:
- With one pass only, is one pattern better than the other?
- Is it necessary to use more than one pass?
@Adnan ah there's the thing, I'm reading it as one pass with each pattern
not one pass with different patterns
@RоryMcCune Yup, that's the question.
Different patterns aren't repeated. Just ONE pass overall
@Adnan If you read the screen he posted it starts "select the number of times the disk will be erased"
then offers you a pattern to use
@RоryMcCune I did, but that's a tool usage
After the OP's edit, it's clear he's not asking about that
@RоryMcCune Okay, I've just checked with a colleague who works with AIX servers. He said it's possible to pick the number of passes and the pattern. There are no patterns corresponding to a number of passes.
16:38
@Adnan ok both the answers are wrong then as they took the stance that the question is about number of times erased too. easy answer too, "there is no benefit, it's window dressing"

1 hour later…

I see we now have a Bear #1 and #2
So, another question =)
I have tried to see how tag creation work
since it looks like I have privileges to create them
but, I am not able to create any
19:58
@RоryMcCune What do you mean "now"? This is not news.
@kiBytes It's just a matter of writing a question (or editing a question) so that it uses a tag which previously did not exist.
@Iszi ah isn't it I just saw that bear two has 50.8 and D.W has 50.7 and assumed it had happened recently....
No special process about it.
@Iszi ah, ok, I though that you could create new tags
without having to assign them to any question
@kiBytes That would be pointless.
20:01
@RоryMcCune Ah, you mean #1 & #2 as in the top users by rep? Perhaps that is new.
@Iszi I don't think so, but it is fine doing it in this way =)
@Iszi indeed that's the one...
@kiBytes There might be some purpose for it way back in the early days of the site - say, around the Private Beta phase - but a mature site like ours should already have all the basic tags that it needs. If a new question arises that warrants addition of another tag, someone with new tag privileges can then create one and assign it. Tags without questions have little to no value.
And the same can quite nearly be said for tags with only one or two questions.
@Iszi I can see a way in empty tags to encourage users to ask questions about topics has been never asked before or they are rarely asked. It helps you to have more variety in the site
@Iszi and since stackexchange relies on gamification I believe that that should do the trick for them
but it is just an example
I don't mean they have to change it =)
I only had the doubt since I saw a "new tag" in the tags tab =)
20:24
@RоryMcCune Since this morning.
time for a change :)
@Iszi There's a launch tonight at Cape, just in case you forgot about it ;)
20:42
@TildalWave I'm aware. Too late for me to stick around for it though. Thanks anyway.
