> What x86 instruction has been used to allow access to extended memory without ever entering protected mode?
Any old school DOS people know the answer to this?
/cc @tylerl @RoryAlsop etc

@AviD Not everyone was carrying around a computer will all their personal information connected to the internet 24/7
the propagation rate of malware was much slower and often required physical contact
hard drives were always full
06:53
@Iszi Yes your right. I was looking at a unsigned being treated as signed the other day and saw all those ones in my head. In my head anything with that many ones can't be a real positive number, so I tend to think of those as signed or error.
07:34
@TerryChia you mean from real mode? enable A-20
@this.josh Any specific instruction? It's a CTF challenge and I have absolutely no experience with DOS.
I seem to remember using the keyboard controller to change the A-20 line and allow reading of extended memory. It is the physical 20th bit of the address line that is gated to emulate earlier processors
looks like you have three options
using the system port looks good:
push ax
mov al, 2 out 0x92, al pop ax
whereas the others require the keyboard controller or BIOS to cooperate

@ThomasPornin This looks like it could use some of your attention (unless it has been answered elsewhere or is more appropriate for crypto.SE)

Q: Does having multiple hash iterations of the same message weaken your original message security?

Alex RodriguezTake a hash function H() to be something like SHA-256 and message m. If you are given H(m) and H(H(m)), can you use this info to help derive m? Also interested in knowing how you analyze this problem to come up with your answer.

I did think of flagging it as more appropriate for crypto.SE, but since I couldn't find that option when trying to flag, I just answered it.

@KarthikRangarajan Done. Although it would indeed be more appropriate on crypto.SE.
There is no "standard migration path" from security.SE to crypto.SE because the latter is still in beta.
The powers-that-be at SE don't allow such things.
But you can still flag "generically" with an explicit comment so that a human or scottish moderator reads it.
@ThomasPornin Scottish operators are not human :P?
@ThomasPornin u being the all knowing bear, any idea for this one? security.stackexchange.com/questions/48927/…
@LucasKauffman I have not encountered this specific situation (yet).
I would not be surprised if you could indeed block network traffic for some process with policy objects.
17:29
@ThomasPornin would a fresh wild salmon refresh your memory?
17:40
@ThomasPornin I'll send it over for you now :-)
I just realized that the guy posting that question is my project manager here in Norway xD
@LucasKauffman hahahahaha - small world

Q: Is it safe to drive a car that has got a broken suspension spring?

kalinaYesterday I was driving home from work and heard a loud noise which I can only really describe as a "clang". After looking at it today, it looks like the spring for the front left (passenger side) suspension has snapped at the bottom. Here is a picture of the damage: I've already had a couple...

you're all guys in here, one of you has to have some mechanical knowledge
Is it safe to ____ a _____ that has a broken _____? Likely not
I also don't see how the name of a C compiler describes a loud noise
...
you're such a geek
I said I need a mechanic
not a geek
geeks are not useful in this situation
You had that coming
18:28
@kalina Problem with driving such car is that you might give wrong impressions if it makes you wobble like a jelly each time you'd step on brakes.
from the short distance I've driven it so far
there was no wobbling when I stamped on the brakes
I'd avoid eye contact on red lights
the main issues seem to be sharp turning
like full lock/opposite lock
like if I pull off the street onto a driveway while going uphill
which I assume is the two parts of the spring rubbing against each other
what car btw?
ford focus first gen UK model
ie: driver on the right
18:32
well, I wouldn't drive it too much to avoid further damage, and easy on corners and bumps
and try not to get pulled over
I will just use my cleavage if I get pulled over
np
I have to go to work for Monday though
thanks for the info, now we know you have one
I have it booked it to get repaired Monday night
well, I'm dropping it off Monday night and being loaned another car for Tuesday
and then I get it back on Tuesday night
your garage doesn't offer replacement vehicle while yours is being serviced?
*scratches head*

well, I'm dropping it off Monday night and being loaned another car for Tuesday
it says they do just there
look, it says it
"being loaned another car"
"loaned another car"
"loaned...car"
"loaned"
"lo..."
"..."
19:08
nice, I walk in to the middle of a @kalina-snarkfest. Subtle.
that happened ages ago
this channel is just idle
@kalina quite a few of us are active in Mv :-)
@RoryAlsop so please to help
damsel in distress
@kalina reading your Q now
provide assistance
it has pictures and everything
the text is largely worthless, like most things I post

A: Is it safe to drive a car that has got a broken suspension spring?

Rory AlsopI would say this would be fine to drive slowly and carefully over short distances (I've had worse) - but things to be careful of: potholes speed bumps (seriously - watch out) cornering hard high speeds Also try and avoid braking or accelerating hard - gently come to a stop at lights etc as yo...

there ya go
it really doesn't look that bad - you basically just want to avoid anything that requires much movement in the front suspension
@kalina needs fixing, but is not a showstopper for short distances at low speeds
so... "drive like a girl"
the highest speed I'll be doing is ~50mph
@kalina hahahahaha
If you can do 50mph, but leave a lot of space between you and the car in front so you can brake gently, you should be fine
and that piece of road has a long left hand turn on it, which should take the weight off the front left anyway, surely
@kalina long left hand turn - a wee bit, but not really that much. Hard left turn at speed - much more so :-)
there are a lot of speed bumps on the way back though
is it bad enough that I should take another route home?
19:20
I would - yes. Speed bumps would be my main worry - or potholes if you have bad roads where you are
I usually avoid potholes
Also - just noticed your new avatar. Who is zis? She doesn't look like a pony
this is my old avatar
nomination phase starts in a couple of days on gaming
and I didn't want people to be distracted by the pony
I doubt I'll get to join the blue team though
@kalina blue team? Is that what the mods are called there?
no that's me avoiding stating things in obvious terms
since said thing hasn't been annouced
19:25
oh - sorry, you've lost me then
@kalina I'm not yet even at 1k on gaming. I tend to get games well after they are released so every question I need to ask is already on there :-)
you only need 150 rep to vote
@this.josh I was referrring to your statement that "back then Most software was widly vulnerable", which is different from now, how?
20:08
anybody know if this devnull-as-a-service.com is purely humour, or if they are really trying to dupe the clueless?
@AviD Definitely humour. I like it
I thought so, I wasnt sure.
As parody it is great, as troll it is not too surprising.
so, thanks to @Iszi, I'm catching up on Infosec Reactions. I've gotta say, it's really gone down hill.
Most of the first few pages dont make any sense, a lot are clueless, and most of the rest are either way too specific or just not amusing at all.
20:41
I only ever see the ones that get posted in here, so generally good:-)
