@tylerl Sorry, disregard that babbling of mine in EE chat, I just wanted to make sure that deletion of the previous message doesn't look suspicious since I'm never really there. I was asked to remove it by its author and it was a bit ... sensitive ;)
BAI
01:03
@ScottPack What's up?
Not much. Just saying hi.
Ended up staying home with a sick kid today. We watched the extended edition of Return of the King. That took a while.

1 hour later…
02:19
I just realized that the new Titanic from Doctor Who looks exactly like the new Titanic in Futurama...
02:55
That was several years ago
03:06
So was your face, but you don't hear me complaining.
That doesn't even make sense.
03:21
@ScottPack haiiii :)
@ScottPack oww :(
@TildalWave She barfed a few times last night so we kept her home from school today. Totally fine all day, so who knows.
@ScottPack oh one of those one day kids flues ... then it gets to you and you can't get out of bed for two weeks
I had 2 3 in a row this year like that, realized I'm getting them from my bro's kid. But I guess if you're with the kid all the time anyway, then you should be fine.
The only time I've actually gotten sick in the past couple of decades was Mono in college and when the little one was 2 and gave me rotavirus.
03:28
dunno man I think I just had a particularly bad luck this year, I'm usually fine for years with maybe a cold every couple of years or so
Most of my September - November weeks were pretty crap on that front
I consider illness an indication of weakness of character.
@ScottPack hehe I thought you might :)
Any truly good person will have enough control over their base instincts to keep from succumb to something so...vulgar as an infection.
who said I'm a truly good person? :O besides, not all is bad about staying home a bit more, think of all the household chores I got done out of sheer boredom ;)
probably the only 2 months in the last 10 years that I fixed more stuff than I broke :)
meh
I work from home.
So I just didn't go into the office and didn't turn on my computer
I did get a lot of laundry done, though.
03:41
I mostly work from home too, but since I canceled a few meetings I had a lot more time on my hands
and I didn't feel like staring at the monitor all the time
Troof
Anyway. I'm going to read for a bit while I wait for the old lady to finish her whatever so we can go to bed.

1 hour later…
05:19
@TildalWave what did it say?
wansn't paying attention
@tylerl Oh just one of our space members called out for one of EE members because of one comment... I thought I'd stop it before it goes anywhere
I mean I didn't nuke it, I just asked of the space member to not dig into it and explained that it's already resolved... then cleared up on behalf of our member not to cause any trouble
diplomacy :)
@tylerl basically, regarding this:
I resent the fact that someone who has not really participated on this site is trying to suggest to us what the community promotion ads should be. You seem to be going around promoting Space.SE at the other SE sites. — Olin Lathrop Dec 9 at 23:14
Now Olin is, as you'd know, a bit of an authority on EE. At least by rep, I wouldn't know by other things. But he is missing the point there, which I thought I explained well enough in my later comments but one of our regulars apparently thought there's more to say on the matter.
05:35
@TildalWave why are you pushing Space.SE so much?
It doesn't seem like a useful concept
@tylerl So much? It's just rotating ads on 4 SE sites, I've seen many ads that are posted on more sites at once and they're for external sites
@TildalWave sure, but what I mean is you don't hear people talking about english.se or christianity.SE or chess.SE. But I hear plenty about space.SE here in this chat.
@tylerl Well the problem with beta sites is that they simply lack visibility on SE sites in general, all graduated sites are a lot more visible. But sure, if you can suggest better ways that are accessible to us and don't appear too needy / pushy, then I'd gladly hear them
@tylerl You do?
@TildalWave I'm not complianing. It's not like you're interrupting anything. I just wonder what the space forum would be useful for.
I mean, here's a question asked by a mod:
2
Q: Is Santa Claus still on track to have his 'deliver to Mars' initiative ready by the time Mars One has landed in 2025?

called2voyageRecently, CNN informed us that Mars One seems to still be on track for landing on Mars in 2025. If this is the case, we may have humans celebrating the first Christmas on Mars of all time. Since this is such a big milestone in the history of Christmas, it would be unfortunate if Santa Claus coul...

So... really? That's why this board exists?
@tylerl yeah... not my idea
can't say I agree with it either, if anything, it should probably be on meta
there's still a proper question in there tho
just Christmas wrapped
05:41
OK, how about one of these:
3
Q: Do astronauts take any pills to battle bone density loss?

StuIs the effect of micro-gravity on bone structure similar to osteoporosis? If so, do they often take simple pills like calcium or more advance medicine such as ones listed here? Lastly, are they effective? I am aware that daily workouts on the ISS are crucial. Just wondering if a medication alone...

Q: Is it possible to get pregnant through natural means in space?

James JenkinsThe Russians did some early testing with rats (Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void, By Mary Roach pg 245) and natural means did not result in pregnancy. Later testing shipped pregnant rats into space, where some health issues developed. NASA research indicates that female a...

I mean...
C'mon you're now cherry picking, there's plenty of good questions
cherry picking from top questions on the front page?
I didn't even scroll down.
Besides, what's supposed to be wrong with these two? I don't get it, microgravity and increased radiation environment of outer space are on topic on our site, as is space medicine
So, Sec.SE is for security professionals, EE.SE is for electrical engineers. Parenting.SE is for parents. But space.SE is very definitely not for people who actually do work in space-related industries.
@tylerl that's because I edited the old one to include a new tag from the new one, that's why they're together
05:44
It's more like a forum for people who like to talk about space.
@tylerl How so? Some of these people are in space you know? Or they might send someone or require someone to do their experiments and so on.
@TildalWave So say you work for NASA on the Mars Rover project. Under what conditions would you post a question on Space.SE? Is there even one?
@tylerl Well, I'll take that point. We do perhaps have too many "curious about space" questions and not enough research level questions for the time being, but that is slowly improving, especially since there's limited supply of general type questions that people ask but constant new progress in space research and industry
> Space Exploration Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for spacecraft operators, scientists, engineers, and enthusiasts.
@tylerl Yes, but so far mostly answering. We do have some researchers that do ask questions and a healthy dose of engineers from the industry that both ask and answer questions. But as usual, those questions don't receive as much attention from our regular Joe... rep train questions still seem to be more "let me clear that ignorance off you" ones
05:50
Is there even one user who doesn't belong to the "enthusiast" category?
cause you can count all the spacecraft operators in the world on your fingers.
@TildalWave that's olin for you.
@tylerl Yes, definitely.
@tylerl well not really, think of all the cubesats for example... space is getting a lot cheaper to reach for useful purposes these days
@tylerl Don McLean has a Space related job
nothing wrong with providing a bit more insight for the curious ones either IMO
There alre also lots of astro(nomer|physicist)s there. c2v, astromax, MBR, etc
05:53
@ManishEarth Mark Adler, Tristan, Paerson (?) ...
@TildalWave right, them too
and UV-D
and a few medical professionals, apparently some structural engineers and materials scientists
Also worth noting that the curious types mostly come and go but we're not that bad at retaining actual researchers, people from the industry, and so on. I'm certainly not complaining about that. It's also terribly difficult to ask of these people to ask more questions (for various reasons)
@tylerl We lost your interest? :)
@ManishEarth Erik works in the industry? He knows loads about orbital dynamics and physics in general
yup he worked for NASA, NOAA etc.
AlanSE should also be into something related
Gwenn too
Well... we do have quite some for a young site IMO, not too bad
06:21
@TildalWave i'm away from my desk at times
@tylerl well thank God for that :) a bit too early here, not even the dog wants to go out yet ...
@TildalWave 11:22pm
it's not technically "early" yet for another 40 minutes
So since I mentioned it there at EE as a distraction, I'm still curious ... what happened with Barnaby Jack then? Any updates on that?
06:59
@TildalWave what do you mean?
as in why did he die?
@tylerl Yup... IIRC there should be autopsy report publicly available some time now?
never heard anything like that
My cable company's YouTube cache/cdn point it utter crap.
So I tunnel all my HTTP traffic over SSH to one of any number of servers I own
problem solved
Also, interestingly: SSH tunnel = extremely fast; PPTP tunnel = horiffically slow
must be the TCP-over-TCP thing that makes network engineers steam
07:22
morning
07:59
morning
08:45
morning
Noon :)
@RubanSavvy Don't get ahead of yourself, we'll get there
@RubanSavvy russia?
09:06
Oh bloody hell now they're discussing what color Santa is. WhyTF does it matter? allvoices.com/contributed-news/…
exactly - obviously browns and greens!
and Good Morning
@Tildal - have you put the space ads on our meta post?
09:40
@RoryAlsop No, the sites have barely anything in common
@ScottPack neither does your face.
sorry for the delayed response!
@ScottPack I also catch the kids flus once in a while, and every few years I develop one of those really strange / rare diseases.
though I had mono almost exactly 10 years ago. This week, I discover I have CMV. #FML
@RoryAlsop Ah yes, good morning! I'm up for so long I forgot all about it :)
09:57
Zzzzz
At least it is Friday
@kalina Bah... company night tonight. Gonna end up drunk out of boredome once more
@Ruban - does that mean 'hello from India?' Or possibly 'hello India?'
10:25
@RoryAlsop I believe it's just providing an answer to @RoryMcCune's question ;) You're on your iPad again aren't you? :D
:P lol @RoryAlsop
10:41
Right kids, work done for this week... weekend awaits :P
for y'all techies around:
11:10
Yes. Blooming iPad. Sucks so much.
11:24
oh, that makes me sad. @RoryAlsop remember @GrahamLee? Seems his user is no more. :-(
Is this even a question?
2
Q: How Tor, Privoxy, Vidalia and Polipo are getting together?

ReflectionI realized that these applications are frequently used together. What is the role of each software in the mission of anonymity and privacy on the web? While I understand Vidalia is a GUI provider, I couldn't figure out why Tor needs Privoxy. Isn't it such a proxy provider by itself?

I'm going to a fancy dress birthday party tomorrow
The dress code is pimps and hos
do you have a fancy dress?
Yes
@kalina and how old is the fancy dress? why are they doing a party for it?
@AviD wasn't he pretty active? What happened?
11:35
A friend is turning 30
@CodesInChaos no clue. happened upon one of his old answers, and noticed the user is swapped to one of those anonymous "user22987492837927" usernames....
12:02
@AviD Really? That's him with "please delete me"? security.stackexchange.com/users/2213
no, thats not him.... he already was deleted.
Ninefingers / Anthony?
@TildalWave Graham.
@AviD No I mean that new "please delete me" off the top of the list ... I miss AntonyVennard a.k.a. ninefinger on the list
@TildalWave that him???
12:09
looks like it :(
@Antony what the hell, maaan? Say it aint so!
dunno... Graham Lee is active on Twitter
12:21
but yup that's Antony that's leaving us
:(
now I feel like double crap
12:39
No idea what drives so many people to account suicide
I simply become inactive when I lose interest
I've seen some do that exactly because they can't keep away from something
Embrace your addiction
12:54
Said no one ever except junkies.
@Simon Fine bunch of upstanding citizens, that lot.
But you really have to admire somebody who is willing to stick to what they believe in, even if it is dangerous.
They're not quitters.
Addiction != "what you believe in"
imo
Come on, you're all SE junkies
@kalina is even an undead SE junkie
hm?
right
AM ALIVE
Did I just quote Celine Dion?
Fuck.
13:07
I regret deleting my account, the combined states between the two would make me one of the most legendary reviewers in the history of Arqade by this point
Google just confirmed that I did.
also I'm still missing a bunch of rep due to the deletion
I obviously blame @Simon for all of this
Ugh, what did I do again?
be alive
Oh, fair enough.
Great, I have a bunch of lame songs stuck in my head this morning.
13:16
Easy way to avoid that: never listen to lame songs
@CodesInChaos This is @Simon we're talking about here.
@CodesInChaos Tell me you've never heard Spongebob's theme song.
So I can call you a liar.
I don't remember ever hearing it
LIAR
so I'm either good at forgetting, or I actually didn't
13:17
Or you're like 70.
I just don't watch TV
@Simon "good at forgetting"
@CodesInChaos You were already working on your own crypto when you were 8, right?
@AviD I know even you heard the theme song.
I don't think spongebob ran in German TV when I was a child, at least not on the channels I watched
but even back then I rarely watched TV
Of course Computer Science channels wouldn't have Spongebob.
13:24
didn't get into programming until I was twelve or so
preferred lego and books over TV as child
Windows is the worst piece of shit ever.
I postpone the damn update for 4 hours and it asks me again 5 minutes later.
I'm so not clicking that.
13:49
@Simon coward
@CodesInChaos Coward or sane?
@AviD Oh no! Not that one!
14:29
@AviD @TildalWave Yup, indeed. It's Antony
Woah, what's this? Anthony is running away? :(
@ScottPack Appears so. I wonder why.
oi
Good query.
14:57
Holy shiiiit! I've just found a Twitter search engine that is capable of finding tweets written in specific Arabic dialects. detectdialect.com
It's frighteningly accurate.
This makes me wonder what the intelligence agencies are capable of extracting from our text, voice, and video communications using scripts/bots.
@Adnan I strongly believe that they're able to figure out the size of our penis from what we post here.
@Simon I didn't know that we had a collective penis here in the DMZ.
@Adnan Dude, you've been here longer than me and they still haven't told you? I feel sorry for you.
15:17
This is the most incredible I've seen in the past couple of months accent.gmu.edu/browse_language.php
The same paragraph, recited by people living in different locations, with different languages as their native tongue.
Fascinating!
15:29
@ScottPack is fascinating.
Woooohooo!! Ensiferum gig tonight. Suck it, LOSERS!! /cc: @Poly
15:46
@ScottPack Why no chaos communication congress on your calendar?
16:08
Bored
not me
I can't even remember when was the last time that I was bored.
lololol
@Adnan So jealous...
Me too.
@Simon I thought you didn't like that kind of music
LE SARCASM-
16:36
Dude, chapstick with menthol in it.... it's amazing.
16:49
@kalina learn python
@tylerl I don't remember her saying that she was a nurd.
@ScottPack 7
@Simon it's about making more money, silly
@tylerl So, you're telling me that if I actually learn Python, I will get a better salary?
@Simon or a better job
Interesting.
16:52
you might also want to throw ruby in there. And Javascript
@Simon No, he was telling @kalina that if she learns Python she will get a better salary. You're different.
@Iszi true.
@Iszi Yo, if you wanna fight we can do this NOW.
I'm obviously talking about a dance battle, show me your moves.
@Simon Right. "Dance battle" == "fight"? Now who's the nurd?
@Iszi Nerds dance?
16:54
@Simon nerds "dance battle"
also, you got served
Can someone make this thing fair and join my side?
I feel like I'm getting sandwiched by dirty old men.
@Iszi LOL
If he can dance, that means nurdz can dance.
@DavidFreitag Are you in a tranceish mood?
@Simon I'm not sure, lay it on me.
It's considered as Progressive House, actually.
17:03
@Simon mmmmmmmm yes, i could listen to this all day, in fact.
@DavidFreitag Damn right, very melodic.
17:46
@Simon Have you heard Wasted Pengiunz' new album?
@DavidFreitag No I should listen to it.
@Simon It's quite good, at least, so far.
@DavidFreitag Well, actually, the gig will be for Ensiferum and Turisas :D
@Adnan =O
17:49
I'm so jelly right now.
@DavidFreitag The ticket was 18.5 euros, though.
@Adnan That's.... it....
@DavidFreitag 25 USD :D
hehehehe
@Adnan Dude, that's nothing.
@DavidFreitag I know!
17:51
Here, good concerts and shows are in the neighborhood of a few hundred.
@Adnan it's tonight too, which doesn't even leave time for me to book a last-minute flight over there. :\
@DavidFreitag Yup, it's after 1 hour. I'm starting to get ready.
Off to sauna ->
Later, everybody.
@Adnan :[
18:09
@DavidFreitag Let's play the temperature game! How cold today?
@Simon -5ºC
Woohoo I win!
-13 qq
It's also still windy as fuck, so it feels much colder
Wind sucks so much.
I know it blows but it still sucks.
18:16
Listenin'
It goes to shit at about 1 minute, but then picks itself back up.
Oh yeah I heard a preview. Gonna listen anywayz of course.
I really wonder what these dudes have gone through to make melodies like this.
I refuse to believe they're just talented, there has to be something feeding their inspiration.
I refuse to waste time thinking about pointless things like that.
How is that pointless?!? It's great to know their background.
> Bring it to demonstrate you wasted $1500
18:30
lulz
I got my glass invite a while back and i was like SHVEET, gonna get me a... wait, how many 0's?
You get invited and you gotta pay, how great.
Well it is still technically a Beta device

2 hours later…
20:04
Am I the only one who believes this is a completely pointless edit? security.stackexchange.com/posts/25585/revisions
@Simon I think the edit turns it into a bit of a pointless question - they've apparently decided to fire the guy already, so he really doesn't need our input so much anymore.
@Iszi You're right.
Also, what's next? If he gets a new job, he will re-edit for "A previous employee at my previous job..." ?
@Simon I would suggest editing it to remove the relationship entirely. "An associate of mine, let's call him Dave..."
I bet he would be super mad and re-edit it.
MOURNING @AbeMiessler
BAM!
miss me?
also - mourning
20:16
ofc
we got snow in cali
thought of you
Nice!
Was it chaos?
@tylerl Thumbs up!
You screwed the coding part though, no?
did i?
fix it if i did
afk
20:27
But it won't be automatic!
i no has 3k rep

2 hours later…
22:14
evening. To those parents here - anyone want to volunteer as pro tem mod over on Parenting.SE?
5
Q: Thank you, Torben and cabbey!

Tim PostIt's with a bit of a heavy heart that I must inform you that two exemplary Parenting SE moderators will be stepping down shortly: I've worked with them not only as an employee of Stack Exchange, but also as a long-term Stack Exchange moderator myself. Torben and cabbey stepped up to help ...

of course you don't need to be a parent to moderate
but it may be useful
Imagine how great my advice would be there.
@Simon erm....yeah :-)
22:49
I sense some ambiguity.
@RoryAlsop You never know, the point of view from the small child may contain some important information.
Hey @avid you got snow then?
@DavidFreitag cues I'm Just A Kid by Simple Plan
The noise scared the shit out of me for no damn reason.
22:58
@Simon - yes. Snow in california is always Chaos
@AbeMiessler That must be funny.
I bought my neighborhood bum a tall boy. I think it saved his life
A tall boy?!?
a 24oz beer
not an actual child
Oh lawl.
22:59
do you guys not call them that in Canada?
I don't think so, at least not here.
You haven't lived
FML
totally
RUNNING AROUND DA CHRISTMAS TREE
I totally fucked the lyrics.
23:02
I just boiled a whole pack of hotdogs in a Fosters can. Best dinner ever.
pls gieb dinner
I'm still at wurk.

I came in at 7:30
So yes, le still.
Oh, and i got hot chocolate too, which means i get irish hot chocolate with my peppermint schnapps too. How delightful!
@Simon How the hell many hours do you work a day? 12?
@DavidFreitag Usually 7.5 but I'm getting crazy these days.
23:06
@Simon What, do you get like a two hour lunch break? 7.5 hours was two and a half hours ago.
@Simon What time do you normally get to work?
Nonono, 30 mins of lunch. Like I said, I'm getting le crazy.
8
You made it sound like 7:30 was late for you.
Oh, nah.
I get ~6h of sleep a night so I'd die if I'd come in earlier.
On weekends I sleep like 82374234234238974324 hours a night.
@Simon I passed out at 3 this morning and got to work at 7:30
@DavidFreitag bt;dt but that sucks when you have a long shift ahead.
23:09
@Simon I worked 9 hours
@DavidFreitag u kr4zy
@AbeMiessler How many hours does your dog work a day?
@Simon wasn't the one you mean, "Stupid Kid" by Alklaline Trio?
I don't think so, sir. QQ.
@Simon - 23
23:20
@AbeMiessler Minus 23?
That's not what I meant, but I'm into it.
Nice.
Sick dog.
@Simon, @RoryAlsop why are we talking about alkaline trio?
Hella sick
We're talking about them because @RoryA subtly called me stupid through them.
I like it
23:45
Me too.
23:55
