XSS homework? Why don't I have homework like this?
Because you don't study IT-Security
Because you don't hate yourself enough to study programming.
01:07
@ScottPack But I do hate myself enough to do that.
@copy le fu-
Whip me spank me make me code.
@ScottPack Great song, what's the title?
It's a nerdcore rendition of an Xzibit song.
01:19
I bet you'd get millions of views on YT if you'd put up a video of you rapping that song.
That sounds suspiciously like effort.
Instead, I can sit here trolling ServerFault for a few more reps and drinking wine.
How do you make money that way?
And you're "trolling" ServerFault?
I'm about to hit 10k so I'm trying to find a question or two that I can throw a quick answer down on.
That's not trolling!
Time to test how good TF2 will run on Ubuntu. Somehow, I bet there will be a driver issue.
It's not like if they warned me that the driver was in beta and that I absolutely needed it to play.
Frack. Apparently I'm getting too sober to type well. I meant trawling.
01:27
More wine, more!
It's Ubuntu. There's always a driver issue.
Oh c'mon. I went for Ubuntu because I'm expecting to have less issues than on Fedora.
Pussy.
Fedora has bitch slapped me twice, I think it's fair to pussy out.
Plus I wanna try Steam on Linux.
Having both in the same sentence is like a wet dream.
Yeah, that would be a good reason.
Kind of sticky and slightly embarrassing?
01:31
What about a wet dream when you're 12?
I don't remember being 12.
LOL
There's something wrong with me, I went for a bottle of water instead of a beer.
Can you fix me?
That's easy. Go back and get the beer.
But it's like 4 steps away!
Alright, TF2 is laggy as shit, can't be annoyed to debug that tonight.
So, time for some PHP.
Man, that's how crazy I am.
Man. You know how to party.
01:40
Anyway, how do they port to Linux? I'm assuming most games are coded in C++, can that even run on Linux?
Of course I know how to party, PHP coding and wait for it... I'll throw a beer in!
Says the man who's drinking alone, chatting on the internets, and watching Andromeda.
Hahaha.
It's too much trouble to get people to drink with you.
Sure. C++ runs on linux no problem. cd ~/gamesource && make
I had a bunch of beer with people last night.
wot
During the week?
It must have been hard to set up the "meeting"
Wait, no, you were playing D&D, that's why.
Historically Wednesday was my gaming night. Nothing like rolling dice and drinking beer for a fun evening.
01:43
This is definitely the wildest party in Montreal: PHP, beer and pants are off.
I might smoke a cigar but I'd have to go outside, that's far too much trouble.
I'm so wild @ScottPack, you don't even understand.
I need to find a tobacconist and get myself some good leaf. I haven't smoked my pipe in years.
It's crazy how I can tell your whole personality just by your hat. Of course you would smoke in a pipe.
Honestly, I dig the hat but it doesn't look good on everyone. It wouldn't on me.
It is English, after all.
Is it?
If I had to put on a nationality, it would have been French. You know, it could be a family member of the Beret.
02:07
A flat cap, or, in Scotland, bunnet is a rounded men's or women's cap with a small stiff brim in front. Cloths used to make the cap include wool, tweed (most common), and cotton. Less common materials may include leather or linen. Cord flat caps are also worn in various colours. The inside of the cap is usually lined with silk for comfort and warmth. History The style can be traced back to the 14th century in Northern England and parts of Southern Italy , when it was more likely to be called a "bonnet", which term was replaced by "cap" before about 1700, except in Scotland, where it c...
Scotland? They have kilts and the cap? Awesome.
And Rories
Oh by the way @ScottPack, fun fact about my last name. If you aren't too lazy, google translate it without the first letter from French to English. You might realize that my appearance was meant to happen.
I'm guessing the 'D' would indicate ancestral origination?
02:28
In a sentence the D would be followed by an apostrophe, which would mean "From Scotland".
I have no idea if my ancestors were living there or what.

Hi Colin - long time no speak. How's things?
not too bad, been trapped in the murky world of spreadsheets and gantt charts. Managed to write some code yesterday :)
hows things with you?

Ooh - take a photo of Saturn tonight, as Cassini (orbiting Saturn) will be taking a picture of the earth. apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html
09:05
@RoryAlsop thats very cool :)
09:24
can I store my pgp keys in keepass I wonder...
@lynks I know I have
09:39
@lynks No, not directly.
You can, however, add a file containing the key as an attachment to some entry.
@Adnan I had no idea there was an attachment option.
@Adnan yep just found it, thats cool.
@lynks That was almost simultaneous.
@lynks Though, to be honest, I never used it to store PGP keys. I mostly use it to store bank statements and scans (id, passport, etc.)
It's strange to me that I find it more convenient that TrueCrypt (for this kind of things)
@Adnan yeah, I have always used an encrypted loopback filesystem in the past. Nice to know KeePass works as a file bucket also.
10:05
Gimme some luv!

Q: How can I change the default chain length in Tor?

AdnanBy default, Tor uses a two-hop chain: Entry node, a node somewhere inside the Tor network, and an exit node. The default number is, of course, chosen as compromise between performance and decent anonymity. Although, to be honest, I'd say that the number is a bit skewed towards performance. Setup...

Also if anybody knows the answer, that'd be great.
@Adnan I have found some people who opt for editing the source (c) which I assume you have found. Also why? 3 nodes is the perfect number.
@Adnan It won't make you any secure, for correlation attacks you only need to first and last hop, hops in between are irrelevant
and IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
4
sorry had to let that out, that song has been in my head for 3 days now.
10:52
@lynks @Lucas I have to disagree with both of you. With a compromised exit node, it's possible to know the middle node and then through legal process it's possible to acquire logs which will lead to the entry node. Repeat for entry node and you got your guy.
Increasing the path length means there will be a higher chance that one of the nodes will be outside the jurisdiction of the adversary.
We all know how easy most ISPs give in to legal requests. Some ISPs do fight for the privacy of their clients, but most of them give the logs right away.
@LucasKauffman As for correlation attacks and a more specialized version of them "tagging", it's a totally different matter. But you're right, the hops in between are irrelevant in this case.

@LucasKauffman this UK heatwave. Hot weather and I do not get on well.
@LucasKauffman Much more innocent mind than mine.
I thought of 2 girls 1 cup.

@lynks what you need is an icy smoothie
@LucasKauffman see, out problem is we are a cold-weather country. Strong insulation, fires and heating systems in all buildings. No water-fountains or outdoor seating. Buildings not designed to allow air-flow etc etc. So even modest temperatures (right now 25C @ 70%) are painful here :P
11:45
@lynks mobile airco unit :p?
@LucasKauffman aircon barely exists here :P, and is expensive
@lynks I'll set up an aid-for-brittain fund :P
@LucasKauffman please do. If you could also send some of those new razer laptops, that would be great.
@lynks I'll throw in a laptop if I can have Wales
@LucasKauffman wales is free. has been for years, no takers yet though.
11:51
@lynks In that case I demand that the Kate's first born is named after me
@lynks and I'll also take her sister ._.
@LucasKauffman hehe, wouldn't we all.
@lynks I guess we would
In the interests of remaining ambiguously gendered on the internet, I will now claim to be a lesbian.
@lynks don't think you need to be lesbian to 'like' pippa middleton

Q: How to figure out if someone has been using TeamViewer 8 to access my computer when I was not here?

Per-Øivin AndersenI came to my computer today and have not been here since monday afternoon. I am using windows 7. There were some error messages showing even on the log in screen about memory violations done by spotify and one more (I can't remember), and I just clicked them away, even though it is not normal on ...

Who the fuck upvoted the last answer?
Good, someone downvoted it.
<<
Props!
I decided to sacrifice one of rep to downvote too.
13:02
@Adnan If you make the picture bigger it's easier to see
@RoryAlsop yeah that one was choo choo central!
@RoryAlsop no worries on that front BTW the front button is a bit flaky on that one but does work sometimes, I tended to use the close touchscreen gesture which works just as well
13:28
@Simon rep returned
Wohoo @@@
@lynks it's got so bad I've started looking at units. looks like £300-500 gets something, how good it would be is another matter...
What would you chaps recommend for a line-of-sight network hop of around 600m?
pogo sticks.
13:39
inb4 IPoAC
@AviD I'd use popsicle sticks.
@Simon that makes no sense.
@lynks carrier pigeons. Mediocre latency but great bandwidth
@AviD It absolutely does. They are way stronger than your silly pogo sticks.

inb4 IPoAC
13:40
@Gilles oh excellent choice. do you remember the RFC #?
@lynks AC?
oh, avian carrier
also that way if any of the packets fail, you've got a nice lunch.
@Simon that makes no sense.
and popsicle sticks dont hop.
@Gilles L.A.Z.Y.
Popsicle hater.
13:41
@AviD you could make them
for example, by attaching them to a pogo stick.
ethernet over laz0rs sounds fun, but rather difficult...
@Simon Do you like Popsicles?
Oh, and @lynks. IP over Burrito Carriers.
@lynks Laser-based networks are cool.
Never tried it, though.
@ThomasPornin the big problem with laser-nets is getting the sharks to line up properly.
@ThomasPornin I imagine your run-of-the-mill laser "pen" isn't going to be able to 'heat-up' and 'cool down' fast enough to modulate a signal.
I use a laser now. Lasers are cool.
2
13:55
@AviD However, think about it: you get a fast network, and you get the chance of killing pigeons with your data !
However, the boring but practical answer is probably about WiMAX.
@ThomasPornin shark-borne laser network: self protecting network.
no need for a firewall.
@ThomasPornin I was wondering why I've been having big delays in my IPoAC network.
@Adnan I like everything that tastes good in my mouth.
@Simon that's just begging for a TWSS.
@Simon I have a Popsicle for you, although it's probably of an unusual taste.
13:58
@Adnan I'm always up for new experience.
But I'm sure it's not something you haven't already tried before
@lynks Joking aside, extremetech.com/extreme/…
@Adnan interesting, thanks I would never have thought you could switch the state so fast
@Adnan Joking aside, ily.
@Simon What does it mean?
@Adnan Double rainbow.
14:10
@Simon According to Google it means "I'm leaving you"
@Adnan Hell no. It means I love you!
@Simon If you buy me a Jet Ski I'd love you back.
Or wait wait, that's very immoral.
Asking for a Jet Ski in exchange for love is wrong.
Buy me a car. A Ferrari
@Adnan Yes, you should ask for something more expensive. That would make it right.
@Simon Well, you were just offered some beer in Thailand.
You know what happens after beer in Thailand.
I have no idea but I'm assuming something bad?

@Simon @Adnan the way things are going, I think you might need this:
@AviD I hope that's not a real thing.
@Simon seems to be, just with an unfortunate mistranslation.
my best guess would be something like furniture polish.
hmm, "bordello strength"??? WTF?
14:35
@AviD Did they mistranslate before coming up with the logo then, I guess?
perhaps the mistranslation was on purpose?
'Cause that ain't furniture bein' polished.
I know thats not really what it is, because you cant get that in a spray can.
Of course not, to restore your virginity you need to apply a cream.
@Xander hmm, maybe its crotch fragrance?
@AviD Something like that. I have no idea.
14:47
is it just me, or are the really paranoid types always interesting
whoa. accidentally read that json question, and both @Xander's and @ThomasPornin answers are clueless (about this).
too busy with gov't filings right now, but maybe I'll have time to answer it later, I'm leaving it open.
or maybe one of you can read up on json hijacking.
@AviD I think you've misread the question. It's not about user's hijacking other users' data, it's about trying to prevent his site from being scraped.
@Xander okay, its possible I misread, if so I will issue a formal apology.
to @ThomasPornin. You, you're still clueless. ;-)
@AviD LOL...No need for that. :-)
though my iota of brain cells dedicated to this q so far, doesnt see the difference in your statement.
15:02
The data is ostensible the same for all users. The crux of the question is this:
"...I had to manually enter first hand data, which is a really tiresome job. I am concerned if I return such data in json, it would be too easy to parse and incorporate into other's database..."
All he wants to know is if he can prevent people from stealing his site's data by rendering it as an HTML table rather than JSON.
So JSON hijacking doesn't really apply, since there's no mention of authentication in the first place, there's no need to hijack. You can just make unauthenticated requests to either the page or the endpoint all day long.
If he decides that the data is valuable and restricts it to authenticated users only as per one of my suggestions, then he would need to think about JSON hijacking as a possible threat, but it's not relevant to his current question.
My brain hurts at the level of paranoia that Edwardo has, either that or my brain hurts at the low quality porn sites he must be subjecting his computer to to make it neccessary
@AviD You are an apps guy right? Any recommendations for free scanners that I can throw at my app to check if I missed some low hanging fruits? Or is that the sort of product where it's total crap unless you spend stupid amounts of money?
@Xander ohhh. perhaps you're right - as I said, my head isnt really there, and didnt really read it.
Consider this the formal apology, to you and Mr. @Thomas.
I see the comments now state "Request clarifications or suggest improvements". What about the snark?????
@TerryChia well, its usuall still total crap even if you do throw money at it.
but try netsparker community edition, for a start.
the free version does only scan for a few things - I think XSS and SQLi - but as I said, its a start.
and ftr, I usually dont do the pentests...
15:14
@AviD Cool, will do. I won't put much effort into it but I'd like to avoid the stupid "wtf was I thinking?" type of mistakes as much as possible.
you could also try fiddler + watcher (fiddler plugin, passive scanner) and walk through the site. also works pretty cool.
15:31
@Adnan that's just random.
not that I'm complaining. Kept me ahead of the onslaught of @Adnan @TerryChia and @LucasKauffman for a while longer...
@RoryMcCune Hey, I basically stopped answering already. :P
@TerryChia yeah I did notice the slow down... BTW you could try arachni
free scanner and works readonably well (for a scanner)
@RoryMcCune Cool thanks. I forgot about that one.
Today, I encountered a rather stupid thing. An authentication library that doesn't offer Bcrypt.
Sure, they offer hashes with configurable iteration counts but gimme Bcrypt dammit!
@TerryChia that's not stupid, that's standard. Which is not to say its not also stupid.
@AviD hehe, thankfully it's easy to enough to extend it to get Bcrypt support.
15:56
Apology accepted, captain AviD...

Reading old questions. Chanced across some lovely Bear snark.

I asked my boss for a day off. However, he said that I couldn't because I have to clean his car on that day. Luckily, we agreed that I could do it the day before.
@Simon @ScottPack's car needs cleaning as well.

@RoryMcCune I'm coming for your @Rory. You can run but you can't hide.
Guys there was a canonical question and answer on SF which is really good for how to handle compromised servers. I created a Q and A as a canonical question
I just saw that. You're trying to steal all the rep!
not really if it gets added to the community wiki I do not earn any rep for it
@LucasKauffman You can make it a community wiki, can't you?
@Xander yes I can, but I'm too much of a repwhore
:(
@LucasKauffman LOL
17:43
LOL
I knew it!
@TerryChia It's true. It could go for a detailing.
The wife's car could use some work too. She was the victim of a parking lot hit&run by a 15 passenger van transporting developmentally disabled adults.
@ScottPack I hate body work, unless it's on a woman.
@Simon That's what the shop is for. Luckily the damage is pretty localized. The rear bumper needs replacing, it didn't actually break but is pretty well deformed, scratched up, and janky. The rear fender may be able to be pounded out. No cuts into the metal, no bad creases.
Oh, changing a bumper, I can do that.
Yeah, that's pretty easy, just a few bolts. Body work I won't do.
Well, repairative body work.
17:56
@ScottPack So what about your car, how much work does that need?
I've done replacements.
@LucasKauffman Body wise it's fine. A couple of small scratches, none of which pierce the clearcoat. It's just dirty.

9 hours after being asked, this question and all answers have net-zero votes? That's a bit odd, isn't it?

I think that only nerds would think that's odd.
@Simon You trying to start a new meme or something with this? 'Cause I think a few people in here might be offended by you only singling me out as a nerd.
You're so nerdish that I don't understand what you're saying.
I wonder who would get offended.
@Iszi It is a slow day. Because it is mid-July.
@LucasKauffman yeah it's an interesting calc to see whether I can stay ahead of the pack long enough to make it up into the 20k bunch or whether I'll end up losing my top 10 spot!
18:30
@Adnan I think somebody's flagging them. I'm voting to leave them all open.
@Xander Which?
@Iszi A bunch of old questions (including a Question of the Week) are coming through the close queue as off-topic.
Some idiot decided to fuck around or what?
@Simon Ehh, well several of the questions aren't great. It's more likely that someone is trying to be helpful, but just doesn't yet have a good gauge of what's on-topic and what isn't.
@Xander Old questions coming up in the close queue aren't necessarily bad. If it's stale stuff that hasn't seen a lot of activity because it's off-topic or not fit for SE, then it should be getting flagged for closing. Strictly speaking, the "how to hijack a satellite" question was always debatably off-topic or unfit for SE.
@Xander It looks like at least some of the questions have comments (some from the mod team, no less) indicating they really aren't that great. And I'm not sure the questions have seen much improvement since those comments either. So, a lot of it is probably overdue cleanup if we really think about it.
18:36
@Simon It might be a two-person scheme in order to get a lot of review items (reviewer and steward badges).
@Iszi Yeah, no, I definitely agree that cleaning up is valid. However, I'm voting to leave open questions that I think are on topic. Personally, I've always like the hijacking a satellite question. :-)
@ThomasPornin I like this option so much more than the one suggested by @Xander
:P
@Iszi Yup, but "not great" does not equal off-topic.
@Simon We are in IT security, dammit ! We should always imagine an active attack, instead of the probable but boring hypothesis of benign incompetence (which is what @Xander suggests).
Haha.
18:42
@ThomasPornin My problem is that I switched out most of my coffee intake for tea a few years ago. I don't have enough caffeine in my body to have an appropriately edgy IT security personality any longer.
Here we go, that's the reason why I don't wanna start drinking coffee.
@Simon Coffee is one of the delicious nectars of the gods. You should learn to love, and appreciate it appropriately.
We're talking about coffee, not beer.
@Simon That's why I said one of the nectars. Along with tea, beer, wine, and fine spirits.
I'm not old enough to enjoy wine, yet.
18:46
@Simon As in you can't legally purchase it yet, or as in you simply don't appreciate it yet?
@Xander I can't appreciate it.
@Simon Ah. Understood. My suggestion, should you be interested at any point, would be to start with a light red, like a Gamay or a Pinot Noir which will help you start to appreciate the characteristics and flavors without overpowering you.
@Xander I thought it was better to start with white.
@Simon you racist bastard.
@LucasKauffman Scum Simon.
18:53
@Simon It certainly can be easier...I just don't approve. :-) If you want to start with white, a nice German Riesling may be in order. They're generally sweet, but the better ones incorporate a delicious complexity.
I don't feel the need to start yet, though. I assume it will come one day.
@Simon Yep, no rush.
Just like beer, it just happened.
@Simon And you have several of the finest breweries in the world in Quebec, so there's no reason to rush to leave beer behind.
Really? I guess I'll have to look into them.
19:01
@Simon Yup. Unibroue and McAuslan produce some of the best beer on earth.
We're just Awesome.
What's up with the fuckers that accept but don't upboat.
@Iszi I don't think we would, no.
@ScottPack This can happen with they don't have enough rep to upvote.
But it can also happen when they just don't know how to use their brain cells.
@ScottPack You need 15 rep to upboat.
@ThomasPornin It can, but not when they're over 100 reps.
19:08
@ScottPack Well, that when the brain cells branch of the decision tree factors in.
Douchewaffles.
@ScottPack You can get badges for that, I think.
Get badges for what? Douchewaffling?
@ScottPack those don't sound like they would taste nice
@ScottPack Yup, gold and silver badges for zero score accepted answers.
19:10
@RoryAlsop kind of vinegary, yeah. Germans probably love em.
@ScottPack Being douchewaffled, rather. Though the badge says "unsung hero" which looks better on a CV, I guess.
"tenacious" and "unsung hero"
Yeah, it's not nice to douchewaffle someone. Kind of crummy really.
@ScottPack I'd happily be douchwaffled for a gold badge.
I like shiny.
@Xander but not vinegary
19:14
@RoryAlsop I do really like saurbratten
@RoryAlsop Yes, not vinegary. I've eaten German food. I now know why Germans drink beer with breakfast.
@ScottPack prefer Kasebratwurst
You know what goes very nicely with sauerbraten? Manhattans.
@ScottPack mmmmm - think I can manage that in a few minutes. Once this gin and tonic is finished
I drank a lot of wine last night. I may have to do some G&T tonight
19:19
has anyone on here played with Quadcopters at all?
Just looking at the phantom DJI, looks v.cool
@RoryMcCune I will be expecting flyby video of your new home when you move up there
@RoryAlsop was actually thinking that + gopro might make a cool marketing video for the house...
@RoryMcCune oooh - cool. If you need a camera, I have a Muvi. It's exceedingly good in daylight...but it isnt a gopro
also that + N900 == war-flying :)
19:23
well might let me write it off as a business expense :)
I can do a conference talk on it :)
only reason for thinking of gopro is apparently this one has a mount for GoPro already fitted
also apparently has GPS and a failsafe mode so it comes home if it gets out of range...
@RoryMcCune GoPros are pretty awesome. I have a co-worker who just got his private pilot license, and records all his flights with one.
I go the idea from this vid
GoPro + phantom
@RoryMcCune That's very cool.
@Xander ^this
@Adnan - Dunno who was flagging them, but I agreed with probably most flags. Admittedly, I might have VTCed one of those that was borderline, because I was hurried here to take the dog out for a piss :) My bad, if it caused any problems.
19:59
@TildalWave The world exploded because of you.
@Simon You sure it's not just hiding under your mattress?
20:16
hmm I may just have impulse purchased a DJI Phantom and gopro...
I probably shouldn't have watched all the cool videos
But if the weather stays decent for a little while I could see some awesome shots of places like Edinburgh...
20:30
@TildalWave The end of the world?!?
@RoryMcCune Nice! That'll be fun.
@RoryMcCune I'm less than 30 days out from having a new mouth to feed, so I don't have the luxury of being able to make impulse purchases, so I fully intend to live vicariously through you. :-)
@Xander yeah lots of fun to be had I reckon. Hope the weather stays nice now for a bit so I can get some good shots! The GoPro looks like a good camera and the phantom seems easy enough for a noob to fly (apparently it has a failsafe return to base mode)
@Xander yeah the 0-kids thing is nice for gadgets :)
@RoryMcCune LOL! Yup.
@RoryMcCune And traveling.
@ScottPack that too. Children + long haul flights <shudder> at the thought
20:42
@RoryMcCune Even just going away for the weekend. It's a lot more effort.
@ScottPack Truth.
Most of the Area 51 proposals are utter crap.
Sites for "5 Star Lifestyle" and "Repartee?" Seriously?
Tickling?
A Q&A site for people who enjoy being tickled?
Devops
@ScottPack Devops could be interesting, in that it's the intersection of SO and SF. We'll have to see.
Personally, I've tended to scoff at the concept, but I've also followed the proposal, so I can't be too negative. Yet.
It is kind of a "you really should pick one to be good at, rather than being mediocre at both" sort of thing.
@Xander A lot of it will depend pretty heavily on how it's handled. I'm all for the idea of integrating the developers and operations by way of workflow and task alignment. What worries me is that it tends to be used as a rallying cry to relaign systems administration to developers.
@ScottPack Yeah, that makes sense.

Traditionally Ops and Dev have always been at odds simply because their functions are so different. Ops aims to keep a stable, relatively static environment, that's easily manageable and provides high levels of availability. Dev is trying to always change things.
And to allow developers who mistakenly think they understand systems to try and take over the whole kit and kaboodle.
The two can get along, but it requires both cultural and workflow shifts from both teams so that they can each accomplish those goals.
@ScottPack Exactly.
But, it's not "Give the programmer the root password because the neckbeard admin won't install the new features. The coder can do all that. I mean, it's all just code anyway."
@ScottPack Which is all find and dandy until the new feature allows anyone to login to anyone else's account with any password. (Dropbox)
