@ScottPack Pretty stable, eh? It's the second time that it crashes on me. This time it was after updating some packages. Screw Fedora.
I went for Ubuntu because I'm most-likely going to try Steam on Linux.
I also want to keep it simple this time.
You missed that chance by not using Archlinux
Oh well, I'll keep it in mind for the next time.
I wanna get rid of GNOME 3 though.
Actually, I think I'll try to get used to it.

@copy Baww!
Boring.
@copy @paste Is this like a date?

@paste Do you only know eachother through stack exchange?
02:41

@paste Cool!
@copy you tell them the story.
@paste Gogo copy!
We've met each other through SE, but we've never talked through SE, we just skipped that and met

We will.
@paste Hooray!
@copy Suprise! Your having kids! :D
This is getting so damn creepy.
@Simon That's more or less how i roll.

@Xander - yeah, it feels a tad...limited

2 hours later…

@LucasKauffman @RoryMcCune Jetbrains is awesome! I emailed them about possibly upgrading my 1 month old PyCharm license to an IntelliJ license and they offered to refund me for PyCharm so I can purchase IntelliJ.
@Simon Hmm? I'm using Fedora 19. Pretty perfect so far.
12:01
nice
@TerryChia I met a few people of their team at Devox ones, they were pretty nice
@Simon Ah, yeah, if you want steam then you don't have much of a choice.
@Simon How many displays do you have?
12:38
@TerryChia I had a GPU issues right after installing Fedora 18. Went back to 17 because that's the one I had been using for a while without any issues and yesterday I got the legendary "freeze at logo" bug because I did system updates.
@ScottPack Just 1, it's a laptop.
@Simon Unlucky you. I'm using Fedora 18 on a Thinkpad at work with a second monitor. I'm also using Fedora 19 on my Desktop at home. No issues so far.
@Simon That's good. I found that Gnome3 wasn't quite what I wanted, but absolutely sucked the moment you plugged in a second monit.r
I'm trying to figure out how to get individual workspace wallpapers. :(
@Simon What GPU do you have?
@ScottPack Really? I'm using it with a second monitor. No complaints so far.
12:40
@TerryChia Yeah it's unfortunate because I like Fedora but I'm done with it.
@ScottPack I didn't like GNOME 3 at first but now I kind of like it, you just have to get used to it.
@TerryChia I'm probably being a little harsh, but it was pretty obvious to me that the second monitor was just an after thought.
@Simon can't you just use another GUI?
Lemme try to find the GPU, I'm not on the said laptop now.
@Simon I think I used it for about 8 months. Then I got a new MBP and moved to it as my primary workstation.
@LucasKauffman Ya I could use KDE but I wanna get used to GNOME 3 because I'm a weirdo.
12:41
I haven't used KDE in about 7 years, and then I tried it I was less than impressed.
@ScottPack Well, I'm using my laptop's display for my bash prompt while the main screen is focused on my IDE/browser. Not much complaints so far.
If you liked Gnome2 then go for MATE.
MATE is pretty good
AMD Radeon™ HD6470M
It's 1 GB DDR3
It's ok for a laptop, I can run most recent games with low settings.
TBH, I like GNOME 3. Unity is horrendous though.
12:44
still don't get ubuntu ships that as default GUI
Agreed.
@LucasKauffman Some kind of dick waving match between the Shuttleworth and GnomeDevs
To be fair, both sets of people are self-important doucheweasels.
2
@ScottPack agreed
@ScottPack They are developers. I thought that was a universally understood synonym for self-important doucheweasels?
3
Anyway, so far so good. I reinstalled everything on Ubuntu without any issues yesterday.
12:51
The prevailing attitude of, "We'll tell our users what UI features they can't live without, and if they disagree it's because they're inbred morons." that the GnomeDevs have is rather annoying.
@TerryChia This goes beyond devs. They seem to think they're the UI psychologists from Heaven sent to earth to instruct the plebes on the One True Path.
I still can't find a good way to have individual workspace wallpapers dammit!
@ScottPack So the GnomeDevs are trying to emulate Apple?
@TerryChia Only without any kind of analysis to back up their claims.
@ScottPack foolish boys. Don't they know all the heaven sent UI psychologists all work at Apple?
Say what you want about Apple UI design, and trust me I'll say some things, they at least put some effort into discovering what really does work for people.
@ScottPack I personally still think the AppleUI design is far better than any other application I have seen so far, followed by windows (the one from 7, not metro)
12:58
@LucasKauffman Agreed. Although there are some things Windows does better than OS X.
I still can't believe that OS X doesn't support snapping windows by default. (Unless it does in the newer versions?)
@LucasKauffman I don't disagree. Over the years, in my professional life, I've used OSX, Win7, Gnome2, MATE, XFCE, Gnome3, and KDE as primary work environment. And that's actually in order of interface usability.
@TerryChia It doesn't. Fuckers.
@TerryChia They still haven't fixed the whole "maximize doesn't really maximize" problem.
@ScottPack That's a thing? Wow.
@Simon Yeah...the maximize button just makes it bigger. Usually it goes all the way top to bottom, but only fills part way side to side.
Oh that sucks.
yeah
That's been a Thing with OSX since the beginning.
13:06
@ScottPack Yeah, that's the biggest UI flaw I can see in OS X. It gets really annoying once you start working with more than one application at the same time.
@TerryChia No. Doubt.
Have they ever mentioned anything about it?
And it doesn't keep good track of what's open on which monitors so as I dock and undock my laptop i have to move windows around manually.
@Simon Yea I called Steve, but then he went on about cancer and decided to die before fixing it. Prick.
5
@LucasKauffman Wow, what a prick indeed.
13:08
@ScottPack I (think) it's going to get slightly better in Mavericks? I remembered reading something about it.
@TerryChia A boy can dream.
Especially a young one.
Wait what?

A PHP script that calls a perl script that calls another perl script?
Not even in my wildest dreams, not even.
13:15
Oh, this is going to suck. A main chiller loop is out of service so they're closing a fistful of buildings on campus. Apparently, it's supposed to be in the 90s today.
@LucasKauffman I dare you to post it.
@Simon check the comments.
@LucasKauffman Fucking success.
Oh he's french, that explains a lot.
Shots fired :)
@Simon obligatory oy
He'll probably surrender.
13:18
So I don't know if any of you know the answer to this but whatevs.
Yesterday, I downloaded the .bundle of VMware player and the actual extension was .txt
Why would they do that?
Seems legit
I had to rename to .bundle manually ofc.
@Simon Maybe to prevent some (very) dumb filters from flagging it? Dunno.
@ScottPack What's wrong with free-virusless-vmware.com?
@TerryChia Maybe.
@Simon Oh, that's your problem. That's a malware site. You want to go to free-virusless-vmware.ru.
13:21
@ScottPack nah you want free-rayban-and-oakly.ru
they have the best VMware distros packed in 2 MB .exe files!
@ScottPack Ah damn, I knew I wasn't downloading from a safe server.
@LucasKauffman scr
@LucasKauffman These Russians achieve amazing stuff.
Just pulled down a tcpwrappers module for puppet. It has a runtime error. Assholes.
13:53
wow, SE doesn't want me to hit 13k rep
twice now I've hit it and had the points removed :(
@AJHenderson poor AJ, here have a free upvote
@AJHenderson gratz on the 13K
wohoo
13k... again.... again
Can a mod please nuke @LucasKauffman's account so @AJHenderson won't hit 13k? @AviD @RoryAlsop.
@TerryChia I'm willing to pay to make this happen if needed.
a good deed never goes unpunished
14:00
Yep.
@LucasKauffman If you wanna listen to an amazing old school set: youtube.com/watch?v=SIYZ1rtAXfE
@Simon can't I'm at a client :(
@LucasKauffman Charm him with some great music!
Especially with the old school lyrics, they're loaded with stuff like cocaine, bitches.
Etc.
Dat reverse bass
You're missing so much, Lucas.
Define "old school".
14:16
@ScottPack Well, this is related to Hardstyle music but the early tracks of the style had more bass and were far less defined by melodies than today's tracks.
So, when you say "old school" you mean "early 2000s". You're a terrible person.
@ScottPack that is old school
@ScottPack Haha. It is old school for the style!
I hate you all.
It has evolved drastically, hence why it is referred as old school.
14:19
@Simon this is old school: youtube.com/watch?v=XAnln0sGYSg
Style: Hardcore? Now I'm curious.
Oh c'mon will you drop it already?
Nope, it was never dropped. That is indeed old school.
@ScottPack Are you into electronic music?
@Simon Eh I know
Electronic Music is really great
but my style is much...
BETTER
@Simon Not especially.
@Simon it's a bit like The FLY is dead
Pop punk ftw! :$
14:25
@LucasKauffman Let me youtube that.
@ScottPack That's your kind of music?
@Simon The overall is really skewed for some reason I haven't quite figured out. Anything 12 month or lower should be better.
"Say no more the fly is dead"
That dude really hated flies or that's a metaphor I don't understand.
@Simon It's what I actually listen to. Whenever I get about 75% into a song the scrobbler uploads what I listened to it.
14:28
@ScottPack Oh nice.
I can't wait for this rave, it's the only time in the year where I go wild.
@Simon did you hear the defqon one "Weekend Warriors" anthem?
@LucasKauffman By my best m8 Frontliner, of course! It's a great track, it sounds anthemish and Frontlinerish so it's the perfect combo!
Last year was definitely his best year.
He produced crazy tracks like Keep it up, Melodyman, Dream dust.
14:49
@scott - of your top 40 the only ones I disagree with are 1,2,5,17,19 and 23, mostly because I don't know most of them. Oh, and Metaltech should be much higher :-)

Q: How can i make port forwarding, When i using a VPN?

acbd aabcdeI'm using a VPN . And i have a VPN connection. How can i make Port forwarding for my RAT (Remote Administrator Tool) Thank for your answers...

Off-topic please!
@RoryAlsop There's a problem with that. I don't have as much Metaltech as I do the others, so the rotation is less frequent, and they're not on Pandora.
@RoryAlsop Is that on the Overall chart?
Pandora looks cool. However: CANADUH.
Too lazy to VPN or proxy or whatever.
Random question, is anyone familiar with the CryptoCat PRNG flaws (nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2013/07/09/…) -- would those biases show up in enough cipher text?
(i.e. if you plotted the ciphertexts in the same way that the PRNG has been plotted, you should "see" those biases, given enough cipher text as the ghostly grid in the same place, right?)
@Scott - solution 1: I will provide you more metaltech
Regarding Pandora...not sure about that one
15:03
@RoryAlsop Yeah, I've pretty much moved all of my listening over to Pandora.
I remember looking at the business model a couple of years back and it sucked. I'll see if it h improved
It may suck for you (the artist) but it's pretty great for me (the consumer). :)
Heh heh - well as we are all about visibility at the moment, until we get big enough to properly sell out, I'll see what I can do
Ehn, I should actually implement an attack just to remind myself how this goes.
It's also not available in the UK, which may make it less ideal for you.
15:07
@scott - I don't need to listen to them. I know them reasonably well already :-)
In my head, @Scott always aims to pleasure my toupee queueueueueueueue
Welp, I just paid $99 for an IDE. There goes my "buy anything I like" money for the month.
@TerryChia vim
15:25
@TerryChia You poor soul. However, IMO, money spent on good tooling is money well spent.
@Xander That's what I'm telling myself. :) I got my PyCharm IDE refunded so I only paid an extra $70 for IntelliJ.
So now I have an awesome IDE for Java/Python/Ruby/PHP.
@TerryChia Yeah, they make good stuff. All I have at the moment is ReSharper, which I resisted for a long time, but it's turned out to be more than worth it for me. Every time they come out with a new version, I buy the upgrade. My team uses several of their other products as well, and we've been happy with them all.
@Xander Yeah, I'll definitely buy ReSharper if I do more .NET development.
15:49
@TerryChia how is IntelliJ at C?
apparently not great, and only via plugin. maybe that was too much to ask :P
I think someone may need to update this, it's quite comical: debian.org/doc/manuals/securing-debian-howto/ch3.en.html#s3.5
@lynks No clue, not tested yet. I do have Visual Studios if I ever decide I need an IDE for C so....
But if the plugins are developed by Jetbrains, the quality is excellent. I'm using the Python plugin and it has all the features the standalone PyCharm has.
Primary reason i bought this IDE is really so I can step through a GWT app in the debugger though. Lazy mode debugging. :$
@paste Hey, haven't heard back from you or @copy in the e-mail chain for awhile.
16:04
That's because @copy got @paste ed.
Ewwwwww
@Iszi Sorry, I'm on it :)
@copy Where's the picture of the dancing?
We haven't danced yet
What're you waiting for?
16:09
The plane that takes me 8000 kilometres to the other continent
That's it?
Yeah
Psh.
@copy That "other continent" would appreciate if you would use miles, thanks. ;-)
@Iszi The northern part of the other continent doesn't agree.
16:14
BTW, I still don't quite get why people don't use "megameters".
The northern part of the other continent is too busy playing hockey
@ManishEarth Yeah in summer, that's how we roll.
@Iszi You must be from the USA
@ManishEarth I thought a scientist like you would understand that water freezes below 0 C. Yes, Celsius :)
@Simon Me not scientist
(yet)
@Simon Also, fake ice
16:18
@ManishEarth Oh to me, you are.
The first time I tried ice skating was in one of those artificial rinks. It was fall, iirc
@copy Is that where Florida is? ;-)
@ManishEarth Never skated on artificial rinks, I wonder how good they "emulate" (god I'm a nerd) real ice.
@ManishEarth +1 - We even have some skating rinks, and local hockey teams, at my latitude.
@Simon Considering that "real" ice is also just H20 in a solid state, I'd imagine they do so rather well.
@Simon They're usually better than ponds, iirc.
@Iszi LOL
16:21
@Iszi I hope so

Manish is my scientist, you're my nerd.
I gotta label everyone here.

Hum, what else.

@Simon Yay! I got nerd first!
16:23
My grandpa.

@Simon Not rory, rory!
i.e. r[1]
I'm lost.
Rory is r[0]?
@Simon AMA, in that context, still throws me off. I keep thinking "American Medical Association", "American Music Awards", or "Against Medical Advice".

A: The Memes of IT Security

IsziRory As you've already mentioned, Rory has become a bit of a meme within the IT Security StackExchange community. Usage of this meme often takes the form of word substitution a-la "smurf". Usage Examples: Jeff Ferland: It's a quite a rory of a problem, really Ninefingers: At a g...

@ManishEarth I don't know what to label r[1] then.
Scott Pack is the poet.
You can't label one rory and leave the other one unlabeled
@Simon Oh, I've recently become aware of that - my point remains, though.
16:25
You'll disturb the delicate balance of the Rory!
@Iszi I screwed up, obviously it's ask me anything.
It's an initialism that's already taken by so many things.
@Simon I'm more of a sinner and a saint. Regarding the contrast, I do not feel ashamed.
r[0] = "grandpa"; r[1] = null;
So yes, I can.
@Simon throw NullRoryException
There. You did it now
The delicate balance is broken'
16:26
Wikipedia lists 46 definitions of "AMA" as an initialism aside from, and most of them likely predating, its use as "Ask Me Anything".
@ScottPack You're the poet only because of your hat.
:This disambiguation page refers to words and names that contain Ama. Due to limitations in the wiki software, the lowercase "ama" redirects here. Ama Ama may refer to: *Ama (sailing), an outrigger used on sailing boats *Ama (diving), traditional Japanese (and predominantly female) divers *Ama (ayurveda), a product of digestion *Ama (title), a Samoan title given to the paramount chief and commander in war of the district of Safata * Shola Ama, a British singer *Ama (Ama Kōhei), former ring name for Harumafuji Kōhei, a Mongolian sumo wrestler *Ama, a language spoken in Papua New Guinea *A...
@Simon You clearly don't listen to pop music from the 90s, either.
@ScottPack Do I have to remind you that I was born in early 90's? :)
I would rather you didn't.
16:28
Haha.
I'm not sure how this got scooped up in search results for "Big Bang Theory sarcasm sign", but who knew @ThomasPornin was into theater?
That's a good one.
And of course only a nerd would go through those search results.
@Simon ...after having already found the one he was looking for? Yes, indeed.
Another good one - this actually struck me yesterday, too.
@Iszi See, you have perfectly labeled.
Though, strictly speaking, we're not talking about just a physicist with a PhD - there's two physicists with multiple PHDs and other degrees.
16:35
I should watch more episodes, only watched 2-3 random ones.
Though it perhaps says something that one of those claims nearly half of his income is disposable.
16:47
@Simon You most definitely should.
@Iszi I might once Dexter and Breaking Bad are over.
How is Breaking Bad?
@ManishEarth Scientists like you should love it. In all seriousness, it is amazing.
Great :)
I love White Collar, Game of Thrones, and Prison Break (and enjoy Friends/HIMYM/TBBT), but there's nothing on right now :(
Watch the first episode. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to stop watching.
16:54
@TerryChia coolio :) yeah they seem like a nice lot..
Oops. I forgot to pre-order a PS4. I'll try to remember to do it tonight.
@Simon Ordered your One yet? I hear getting them on release day will be tricky now.
@Simon That's the problem, while I love shows like that I can't start now as vacations are almost over
@Iszi Definitely not getting one.
@ManishEarth Yeah me too, I can't start a new show right now because of work and school.
yep
I don't mind watching a running show during the sem, but if there are a couple of seasons backlog, there's a chance I may just sit and watch them all in a week and screw up my acads
17:11
@Simon null ?!? harsh!
Oops, I knew he'd end up seeing it. whistles
@Simon What? Don't wanna give the NSA a window into your home?
@Iszi Haha. There's a thing about NSA key in Windows, right?
Educate me, my little nerd.
@Iszi what about the new Motorola X-Phone, always on microphone, and cloud processing of speech... 'cause that's not risky at all.
4
@Simon In Windows? Hadn't heard. I was just putting together the connections where we found out that Microsoft was in bed with the NSA around the same time we were told that Xbox One won't work without a Kinect.
@RoryMcCune Take out the "always on microphone" part and you have every other smartphone out there.
17:15
@Iszi Oh lmao. Is that still the case about the kinect or they backed up on that too?
@Simon Nope, still the case and the sole justification I can think of for One being $100 more than PS4.
@Iszi oh indeed, this just adds a new level of data getting siphoned off to the cloud. I can't imagine people's reactions 10-15 years ago if asked to carry a listening device that sends your audio to a foreign (if you're not from the US) country and their government can get access to it..
@Iszi Yup. To me, Sony won and Microsoft showed how greedy they are.
@RoryMcCune Didn't the citizens in 1984 have to purchase the very devices used to spy on them?
(Haven't read the book myself, just bits of the synopsis off Wikipedia.)
@Iszi Huh? No..
The screens were installed everywhere
17:20
@ManishEarth Not quite. It seems they were mostly limited to middle and upper class citizens' homes.
@Iszi Mostly
They had bugs everywhere
The screens were only for the non-proles, you're correct on that
I think
Could swear I'd read something where citizens were forced to buy their own telescreens.
I could be wrong
> All members of the Inner Party (upper-class) and Outer Party (middle-class) have telescreens in their homes, but the proles (lower-class) are not typically monitored as they are unimportant to the Party. In Winston Smith's conversation with the shop keeper Charrington, it is mentioned that "[telescreens] are too expensive" and proles cannot afford them (presumably, Party Members have to buy them, though this is not explicitly stated).
Ah
It could also be that telescreens are forced on Party members and the proles can buy them (after all, it's still like TV...sort of) but most of them don't
@ManishEarth Probably.
