Q: What arguments are made by scholars and non-Śāktas to prove the Devī Bhāgavata isn't a major Purāṇa?

sv.As the title says, what are the arguments usually made by scholars and non-Śāktas (Vaiṣṇavas & others) when they say the Devī Bhāgavata Purāṇa doesn't belong in the list of 18 Mahā-purāṇas?

Q: Does the Adiyogi of Sadhguru have a scriptural basis

vidyarthiSadhguru Jaggi Vasudev has a large following in India and abroad. His main sculptural work is the Adiyogi Statue in Velliangiri hills, Coimbatore. Q: Why did King Shantanu wait to see his seven sons die at the hands of Brahmaputri Ganga and not marry another woman?

Q: simple way to atone past sin

OmiThere are a few life incidents that I wanted to talk about: Twenty years back, I was a naive young college student. Can someone explain this answer to me? Maybe I'm getting it wrong, but the answer is logically impossible
I have added a comment anyway

10:05 AM
@TheLittleNaruto I did ! Yday. Haven't really opened it. Was planning to start studies later today. So was going to ping you

10:26 AM
@Carmensandiego Cool! Let me know
@DarshitPatel Why is it impossible?
We shouldn't apply our modern logic in scripture
Do we not say God is everywhere and in every sentient-being and non-sentient being?
Does a cell not form two more cells in a body and then these two cells create another two cells from each.
How is it possible ?
By your logic, it shouldn't be able to create another cell on its own, right?
Thanks for the answer on that meta post. @DarshitPatel :)

@TheLittleNaruto This is because if everything was taken this "loosely", there would be no point to the story

@Brahadeesh still waiting :P
@DarshitPatel Hmm! Right There is no need to take itihasa that "loosely". I gave you an example just to support the answer by giving an argument from science perspective which you may be able to use to relate.

Yes, to also respond to your science based argument, I'd say that the cell is now two entities after division, and they have their own different "consciousness", so they are not same

But they came from same cell

Of course, I'm not refuting that

10:39 AM
Just like Indra incarnated as 5 Pandavas
with different consciousness of course

user185131
@TheLittleNaruto Yo buddy, it takes me a while to gather my thoughts, but rest assured an answer there is on its way :)

@Brahadeesh Great! But my intention was just to summon you :P

user185131
Hahahahaha, and you have succeeded XD

\o/
Are you targeting any question to answer? @Brahadeesh
@DarshitPatel Is your doubt clear now?

Not yet, I'll clarify a bit more in some time. Am in a meeting at the moment

10:46 AM
No problem

user185131
I recently answered the one on Shantanu and why he didn't just get another wife immediately

user185131
But, I'm now browsing the earliest questions on this site, as well as the top-voted questions, to get a feel for what is prevalent

Nice!
I used to do that when I had joined the site

user185131
My impression is (vaguely speaking) that the questions and answers come from a place of seeking sources and of providing them. Contrast this with, say, Buddhism SE, where I feel that the questions and answers are along the lines of "how to live life as a Buddhist better".

Yeah! That is a problem in a way, I agree. But we have to understand we are dealing with a concept of ancient time which is so diverse that if it is not backed up by authentic sources, one may offend one sect or another.
Check this meta post for example: hinduism.meta.stackexchange.com/q/1033/647

user185131
10:54 AM
Then I should clarify - I think it's great that this site has a strong emphasis on using sources. Otherwise it will just be a mishmash of everyone's opinions. My issue, perhaps, is closer to the Meta question by RamAbloh that I linked earlier - we seem to stop at quoting the sources, and not elaborating on them in our answers. But even further back, our questions do not seek clarification on verses and their meaning, they instead only ask if a source exists for a "well-known" idea.

user185131
This is what I have found in my browsing - I freely admit I could be wrong, and I haven't seen the questions of the other kind that I'm talking about.

@Brahadeesh I see your point.
Yeah I agree! A further clarification from quotation is always welcome.

user185131
So, this is not to say that we "should" move in a different direction, or that we are currently on a "wrong" path. It's just that, to my eyes, this site seems to serve a different need as compared to Buddhism SE. (I haven't visited Islam SE and Christianity SE so I don't know about their scopes, I can only compare with Buddhism.)

Sure many users don't do that, but it is possible sometimes quotation parts itself is more than enough. I mean it may not need any further explanation.

user185131
True true, no need to shoehorn in a personal interpretation when a quotation suffices completely.

10:57 AM
Yeah even I can see the gap here.
Many users just skips explanation(even if it is necessary) and simply add the quotation part.
What would be your suggestion to fill this gap?

user185131
It's interesting to me, because clearly this site has grown organically. This means that Hindus, or people interested in Hinduism, are interested in precisely these sort of things. Perhaps the concept of "living as a good Hindu" is not so important as "do the shastras really say anything about these ideas/practices".

user185131
@TheLittleNaruto Suggestions! That's tough... I'll have to think about it...

user185131
One thing is, this situation can be turned around only if there are enough questions of that sort.

@Brahadeesh This reminds me of this question: hinduism.meta.stackexchange.com/q/1499/647

user185131
Either we need to bring in people who will ask questions about the interpretations of the shastras as applicable in one's life, or we need to ask such questions ourselves, or both. This is all I have for now...

11:02 AM
Notice the bottom of the question.

user185131
@TheLittleNaruto I've seen that one, and the one you linked earlier, and voted on them :) Yeah, some parts of my thoughts are in agreement with them. Maybe I'll be able to flesh them out more clearly in my answer to the "What brought you here" question.

@Brahadeesh Greeaaat!!!!
Looking forward to it

user185131
For instance, here's a question I am vaguely considering asking: What is the significance of the use of the word "mama" by Arjuna in the shloka 2.8 of the Bhagavad Gita?

let me check
mama is used for "My"
A word in Sanskrit for "My" of English

user185131
That's right. The context here is - Arjuna is lamenting about how there's no point to winning the war, and he says "na hi prapashyaami mama apanudyaat yat shokam uchhoshanam indriyaanaam..."

11:08 AM
na—not; hi—certainly; prapaśhyāmi—I see; mama—my; apanudyāt—drive away; yat—which; śhokam—anguish; uchchhoṣhaṇam—is drying up; indriyāṇām—of the senses; avāpya—after achieving; bhūmau—on the earth; asapatnam—unrivalled; ṛiddham—prosperous; rājyam—kingdom; surāṇām—like the celestial gods; api—even; cha—also; ādhipatyam—sovereignty

So elaborating my point: Not everyone of Dharma, Vayu, Ashvins are Shakra himself. I do agree that Indra can take up many forms, but if that was true, each would be an exact form of Indra, but Dharma, Vayu, and Ashvins all have different characteristics. If everyone was Indra, there would be no point to the story itself because many a times there is a mention of each of the Pandavas encountering their respective "father" in the story. @TheLittleNaruto

user185131
The "mama shokam" - my grief - is possibly significant? The attachment to one's own grief, something something?

Plus, Pandavas are not seemingly Indras as much as they are sons of each of the Gods. But the Mahabharata itself seems to contradict that in Vaivahika Parva

@Brahadeesh Got your point
Ok that's another problem lol

This is what I mean by "circular logic". And it would be unfair to treat the texts without question as they themselves talk about a lot of "what is right or wrong" or dharma or adharma

11:12 AM
Sanskrit of old time wasn't like it is now. @Brahadeesh
@DarshitPatel Did you not say that the two cells formed will have their own consciousness ?
Same way characteristics also can vary in each incarnation

user185131
@TheLittleNaruto No dispute about that

user185131
@TheLittleNaruto In any case, I was putting up that question as an example of the sort I might like to see on the main site :) Rather than "does Arjuna refer to his grief over the war anywhere" or "where does Arjuna refer to his grief over the war in the Gita", asking for a deeper explanation on a particular point might be more interesting. The former would promote answers that give citations from primary sources and little more, but the latter might stimulate more in depth content alongside any citing

user185131
Sorry for the wall of text :P

@Brahadeesh Understood! Yeah go ahead
post it
@Brahadeesh That's alright
:)

user185131
:D Hai, sensei!

11:15 AM
@Brahadeesh Attaboi! ;-)
@Brahadeesh Do you still watch anime? If yes, I may be able to suggest a good one.
May be I am being bias or something; but I would encourage anyone who is new to Hinduism read the philosophy of manifestation of this universe in Shiva Sutras(by Jaideva Singh)
The introduction part covers it. No need to read the whole book; just the introduction part.

Ok let me try a different approach: Indra has wife named Sachi, and Dharma obviously has another wife (not Sachi). Are both the wives of Indra? Can Dharma consort with "Indra's" wife? Or is Indra's wife free to choose any other form of Indra without sin?

@DarshitPatel If all were the incarnation of Indra, then why this wife argument?
It is invalid right?

@TheLittleNaruto That's the point. How can all be incarnations of Indra, if this point is not valid?

@DarshitPatel Back to zero!
:D
@DarshitPatel Given the context of your question, I am saying your argument of wife is invalid

Haha hope I atleast managed to make you question the arguments

11:29 AM
If you can give a pause on Mahabharata, and do this, you may be able to understand everything:
9 mins ago, by TheLittleNaruto
May be I am being bias or something; but I would encourage anyone who is new to Hinduism read the philosophy of manifestation of this universe in Shiva Sutras(by Jaideva Singh)
At least such doubts would never come

@TheLittleNaruto No it still isn't. If we assume that all of the Pandavas were Indras, then the text in Mahabharata mentioning each of the Indras separately is also invalid (because Sachi was the wife of Indra, but not of Dharma/Vayu/Ashvins) Entities cannot be interchangeable as per convenience, else there would be no point to anything
@TheLittleNaruto Ah, let me check what the book is about. The problem is we tend to take things a lot literally, and that is what the "context" of my question is

@DarshitPatel It's a Tantric text from a sect called Kashmiri Shaivism

Any specific text within that you'd like to suggest? Or maybe something "Explain like I'm Five" link that you can point me to?

I suggested already. But if you're NOT willing to deep dive into that, then read chapter 10 of bhagwat gita: asitis.com/10

Thanks a lot @TheLittleNaruto!

11:39 AM
Hope this would clear your doubts

@TheLittleNaruto As a pointer, you can format tag names in posts using [tag:tag-name]. This would automatically create a link to tag info on the main site.
This works in chat as well as posts. In comments it converts to a hyperlink.
I don't have many reputation points here on Hinduism, so I can't edit that. Of course it's your choice if you want to edit that meta post and add tag formatting.

@Kulfy I know that.

@Carmensandiego There are 10 chapters. I am thinking to finish it 2.5~3 months. We shall finish each chapter in 1 week with all abbhyasha(practice questions.)
While reading chapters we can ask doubts to each other
Also we can see who could answer all the questions(at the end of each chapter). And if not, we can discuss on same questions.
Since you have already started reading, Let's target 1st chapter this week itself. Let me know if this sounds okay to you.
