Q: How accepted are the Smiritis?

Juan Sebastian Lozano MuñozAccording to Wikipedia there are two main types of scriptures, the Vedas (which are seen as eternal) of which there are four, and the Smiritis (which are seen as revealed). I was wondering what the current Hindu thought of the status of the Smiritis are, like are they cannon? Are they not accepte...

Q: Significance of Atharva Veda among Vedas

Vineet MenonAtharva Veda is not considered the same as other three Veda and the study of which is generally discouraged if one doesn't have the required moral conditioning. I know Atharva contains recipe for numerous maleficent rituals including vashikarana etc. Can someone shed some light on this?

Q: Definition of God, on-topic/off-topic?

DroidDevThere are many gods in Hinduism and hence many questions would arise about gods of Hinduism. This post intends to decide, that whether we should make or create a canonical question on main site, in which the definition of god will be explained according to Hinduism. The post will contain: Def...

about above question, there were not much voting on it, but sometime has passed since I posted that
so, do we agree on posting that question as CW on main site or should I wait for some more time?

let us wait for more time

OK, lets see what happens
:)

that is just my opinion :)

A: How accepted are the Smritis?

Vineet MenonYes Wikipedia is right in saying that Hinduism has two types of scriptures, Shruti and Smriti. Shruti The word itself means 'to be heard' and are supposed to be cosmic vibrations from the Brahman itself. This class of Hindu scripture includes, four Vedas (Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva) which are...

another war between vaishnavites and vedantin going on..
I'm exhausted.. :(

@Mr_Green there is no nedd for second group owner. Mods wil going to have same access. Even other sites mod can also do sufficient changes.
@VineetMenon can't help. Don't know about it :|

@AnkitSharma when are we going to get mods?
after beta?

@VineetMenon I've seen mods in public beta of sites, like fitness SE, may be we will get one then

@AnkitSharma oh, it's okay. I was just venting my frustration.

6:02 AM
@VineetMenon Roughly a week after the site enters private beta, i.e. about ten days or so from now.

@VineetMenon i think mods gets appointed in public beta. But don't remember exactly

Q: Why are sesame seeds used in vedic puja and rituals?

jabaharI have seen in many puja and rituals sesame seeds being used with milk. Scriptures also mention its usage in certain rituals. So what's the importance of sesame seeds? Why they are used?

@StackExchange noice question

I don't know why but i feel people are not using upvotes or downvote much.

@AnkitSharma Ok good.. wonderful!! :)

6:04 AM
@AnkitSharma This is true. You can see overall voting activity here: hinduism.stackexchange.com/users?tab=voters

@senshin leechers gonna be leachers

@senshin ahhh...mine upvotes are also very less. ;)
Should we raise meta to encourage user for upvote? or even down-vote if necessary.

@AnkitSharma implying n00bs read meta

@AnkitSharma We've tried that on some other sites I've been on. It's a nice gesture, but practically speaking, the people who read meta are mostly the same people who cast votes, and the people who aren't casting votes mostly don't read meta.

don't we have community bulletin for meta highlights also
It keeps showing popular meta questions

6:08 AM
@DroidDev Community Bulletin got updated by site mod or they got selected by upvotes.

@DroidDev Yes, that's true. It's not possible to manually select what shows up in the bulletin (until we get mods), though.

@senshin let me try to get answer to question "When we will be getting mods?"

@DroidDev Like I mentioned above, "Roughly a week after the site enters public beta, i.e. about ten days or so from now." (This assumes that private beta will only last a week. It may last longer if the site has problems of some type.)

@senshin ok, so as soon as we enter public beta, we will have a mod

@DroidDev Oops, sorry, I typo'd that. I meant "roughly a week after the site enters public beta".
Let me fix that.

6:11 AM
@senshin oh! no problem
@senshin well, I have some new information about that
we can have a mod in private beta also

aahhh! public private confusion...

@DroidDev Yes, you can. Data Science had that post during private beta.

@senshin I posted the message above, in which it is stated that Data Science had a mod during private beta

6:13 AM
@DroidDev He's wrong. Yes, Data Science had a nomination post during private beta, but they still don't have moderators after a month: see datascience.stackexchange.com/users?tab=moderators

@senshin oh! I see

@VineetMenon ahhh....why you reminding me about collage studies.....which i have not done seriously
@DroidDev but you can still ask it in meta if you want.

@AnkitSharma hehe..

@AnkitSharma I'll only ask if WE ALL want. A meta post about it will only be significant if community wants it

@DroidDev hmmmm....

6:22 AM
@AnkitSharma as it currently stands, there are not much users on our site, and this post won't get much attention apart from us people. Still that's only my opinion, let's see what others have to say about this.

@DroidDev We should avoid posting about moderators until the site enters public beta. Posts about moderators typically cause all sorts of drama, so we want to put them off for as long as possible.

@senshin then we need some high rep users to take that responsibility of moderating site, but still there are some things that only a moderator can do

@DroidDev user are not that less but meta participants are very less.

@DroidDev Okay, so just to clarify - the community managers (Stack Exchange employees) will pick moderators about a week after the site enters public beta. This will happen whether or not we make a nomination post.
So basically there is nothing we can do to make the selection of moderators happen faster or slower.

@AnkitSharma exactly, I am still thinking of how can we increase that participation without any mod, so I guess we will have to wait
@senshin then we will have to wait only.

6:24 AM
Between now and the selection of moderators, the community managers will be taking care of any mod-only tasks (e.g. flag handling) that need to be done.

Btw, who wants to be a moderator on this site here?
I for one, don't want to be a moderator for now

So many good answer and very less upvote. ahhh...disappointed.
@DroidDev i want to be.

@AnkitSharma do you have time for that?
I mean moderation is like a full-time job, once we start to get some traffic

@DroidDev i can manage. Currently i am sitting in office but still managing the time.

@DroidDev Based on what I've heard from moderators of other early beta sites, moderation is the kind of thing that takes roughly 30-60 minutes of time per day on average.

6:27 AM
@AnkitSharma currently I am also sitting in office and have sometime, but when a project work kicks in, then I am not able to get online for whole day sometimes, that's why I don't want to be one.

That said, if anybody wants to find out what it's going to take to moderate this site, the best people to talk to are the mods of Islam - demographically and content-wise, their site is the most similar to ours.

@AnkitSharma Btw, in which profession you are, If I may ask.

@DroidDev DBA
In mysql, we are not busy all the day. THere are always free time gaps. And at house i am always active on social networks and my SE tabs remain open too.

@senshin in early beta, yes it is not much time consuming, but I think, Hinduism is a kind of topic, which will get too much traction (I don't know if word is right) in very less time, because of many followers world-wide.
@AnkitSharma Then I wish you luck and will also vote for you, if we have an option

@DroidDev That's very possible, you're right. It all depends on how much this site catches on with Hindus on other forums/sites/etc.

6:30 AM
@senshin that, we will see very shortly :)

@DroidDev no we will not going to have option. On Pet.se comunity moderator selected the mods and Mod Voting meta post got ignored mostly.

@senshin don't you wanna be moderator, I think you have enough knowledge about working of site, whole SE netwrok
@AnkitSharma :(

@DroidDev Ankit is right - there is no real voting at this stage. The nomination post is merely one factor that the community managers consider in selecting the moderators.
It is only after the site graduates from public beta that proper elections are held.

@senshin just more waiting

6:47 AM
No beta users with 200 reputation yet. How?
THere calculation must be wrong.

@AnkitSharma yeah it seems wrong.
we have a couple of user with 500+ reps

6 above 500.
And 14 above 200.

@AnkitSharma but we are lacking in other points like unanswered question, and answers per question.

@AnkitSharma who are above 500?

@AnkitSharma u are one of them

Lol
Still taking about rep :D

@NullPoiиteя you can suggest other topic

it's a translation mistake, AFAIK

@VineetMenon thats also a controvercial statement. Few agree with it and few still not.

@AnkitSharma what can i say....
hinduism is a controversial religion.
everyone can what the hell he wants to say

7:07 AM

who is shankara? you mean Lord shankara?

@Mr_Green shankara-acharya

ohh ok

Adi Shankara (pronounced ; early 8th century CE) – also known as (Adi) Shankaracharya and Shankara Bhagavatpada, spelled variously as Sankaracharya, , ,  – was one of the most revered Hindu philosophers and theologians from India who consolidated the doctrine of advaita vedānta. His works in Sanskrit establish the doctrine of advaita, the unity of the ātman and nirguna brahman, brahman without attributes. His works elaborate on ideas found in the Upanishads. He wrote copious commentaries on the Vedic canon (Brahma Sutra, principal upanishads and Bhagavad Gita) in support of ...

I think we should ask a good and structured question about this topic

@AnkitSharma lol
@Mr_Green it's more related to Yoga than Hinduism

7:55 AM
yoga is related to Hinduism
even tapasya is kind of yoga

moreover, it's a part of ashtasiddhi

I don't know what is that :(

Thanks
@VineetMenon isn't yoga emerged from Hinduism?

Ankit SharmaFor doing Tilak, I have been always instructed to use my ring fingers. But my Panditji always used thumb. When i asked about it he instructed me that Pandits and brahman can also use thumb too, but didn't got the reason for it. So really want to know the logic behind it.

@AksharRoop link

@AksharRoop I don't agree, that's why i have posted my own answer..
which got -2 votes. :(

@VineetMenon May be the reader of your answer belongs to some sects which follow different siddhant (philosophy)

@AksharRoop exactly.
the accepted answer is of Vishnavam
my answer is based on advaita

I'd answer to this question based on aksharpurushottam siddhant, where brahm and parbrahm are different
eternal entities

10:39 AM
Ahh that's why i stayed away from that question because i don't know what is advaita and Vishnavam differences.

@AksharRoop is it similar to mimansa? or dwaita vedanta?
@AnkitSharma haha, it's okay buddy.

@AksharRoop you make me more confused ;)

@AksharRoop but beware, you might get downvoted to hell...
Vaishnavas are really very loyal.. case in point ISCKON.

@VineetMenon No, it is a siddhant itself

I don't see a reason to downvote atleast.

10:41 AM
@AnkitSharma yes thats the reason why I did not answer the question
Because the things I'd mention there would be known to very limited audience.

@AksharRoop go with you answer. WE should encourage all form of believes.

Akshar Purushottam Upasana is an interpretation by Shastriji Maharaj of the teachings of Swaminarayan which led to the creation of the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) in 1907. It could also be referred to as Brahman Parabrahman Upasana or Bhakta Bhagwan Upasana. According to this interpretation, Gunatitanand Swami is the successor of Swaminarayan as opposed to the Acharyas (heads of the Swaminarayan Sampraday). Shastri Yagnapurushdas created BAPS as a result of this difference in belief. Interpretation of Bhagwan Swaminarayan's Teachings Bhagwan Swaminaray...
@AksharRoop go ahead..
@AksharRoop this is by swaminarayan.. yes, I know him.. but not his teachings.. been to akshardham, gandhinagar

@VineetMenon yes
@VineetMenon If you like reading his teachings - Read Vachanamrut (it is available in English, Gujarati)
@VineetMenon It is difficult to digest for everyone, but this siddhant is being accepted widely and a saint of baps has written bhasya on Prasthantrayi (Brahmsutra,Geeta,Upanishad) that backs this siddhant

@AksharRoop kk, I'll..
