12:22 AM
hey
Anything I miss?

1 hour later…
1:50 AM
@MechMK1 You can also shrink it quite a bit with the right compile flags.
And using SLOB instead of SLUB, disabling config options that no one uses (dnotify, uselib, etc).

6 hours later…

Q: Does my using of a LED kit for monitors help people intercept electromagnetic radiation from my monitor?

user123456789Neighbors are commenting so loudly, that I can hear them reading text that I was printing on keyboard with connection to internet and a text on my screen with an Ethernet cable plugged off. No Wi-Fi on this motherboard, no router also. Monitor is the main suspect (2007 with LED kit), video card (...

Again?
I thought we had stopped getting those

Paranoid schizophrenics

On someone getting offended at an article on ED:
> We’ve tried to have internet experts get it closed down, but haven’t had any success.
Even the internet experts couldn't do it!!111one

Encyclopedia Dramatica. Do not look it up if you are not part of that subculture.
I just found the site is back up (after being down for a while) so I'm enjoying myself way too much right now.

12:06 PM
@MechMK1 That's a good point. But in this case it is clear to me that he was from a position of ego.

Anonymous
I know that because when I was his age, I was also "well accomplished" or whatever the fuck you want to call it and guess what? I was an ego maniac too. And I behaved EXACTLY like he did.

@J-- Yeah. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Anonymous
Hopefully he realises that ego doesn't really get you anywhere in this industry, or anywhere at all really.

Anonymous
Well, maybe it does get you somewhere in terms of high earning roles, I guess. Management ones, where you're basically asked to look down on everyone.

Anonymous
But other than that... It is a total waste of energy to be an ego maniac.

Anonymous
12:09 PM
Also, welcome back @forest :D

Anonymous
After a very long 48 days, I am on the final chapter of this course.

Anonymous
That includes reading every page twice, watching all the videos, completing nearly every single exercise and 90% of the extra mile exercises.

I hate having 15 FPS in Project Wingman.
They have this shitty bug that just tanks performance.

Anonymous
Wow, that game looks cool as fuck!

Anonymous
Like War Thunder but newer?

Anonymous
12:15 PM
Once I finish this course, I am going to play a game for a week straight :D

Anonymous
I don't know what game yet, I have not played a game in a very long time lul

It's off-brand Ace Combat, but better
Let me tell you about the bug:
In Conquest mode, which is like "Arcade Mode", there are infinitely spawning enemies.
And the game uses a ticket system, to ensure that you always have enough enemies, but not too many.
And the "alert" system basically just means how many tickets the director has.
Now, in some missions, you have to destroy "high priority targets", so just specific airplanes.
The problem is, as difficulty increases, so do the targets.
In the last few missions, the number of targets is greater than the amount of tickets available.
So what did the devs do? They made it so that mission targets don't require spawn tickets.
So instead of having ~100 enemy planes, you have ~100 enemy planes + ~130 targets.
Which tanks performance! From 144 FPS to 15

Anonymous
Jesus...

Anonymous
That sounds absolutely infuriating lol.

@nobody What's an LED kit?

12:23 PM
@JourneymanGeek I dunno, I thought you were the hardware geek here

@nobody how else is one a hardware geek other than wondering about the stuff you don't know? :D
ah
they have drop in backlight kits. Clever :D

@J-- You literally have to kill the mission targets to improve performance.

Anonymous
Hahahahahaa, that sounds so bad...

Anonymous
wtf. How long has this been a problem?

I recall finding the solution to the bioshock 1 fps bug on consoles
It was so bad my 360 would sometimes lock up
@nobody or they share a keyboard driver and a very bad wiireless keyboard LOL

Anonymous
12:34 PM
So, Blockchain ate $100.

Anonymous
That's... Nice.

Anonymous
So, Blockchain thinks I sent a $100 transaction, but it was actually only $17. But because I didn't include a big enough fee, the transaction is stuck.

@djsmiley2kStaysInside No they just have some form of schizophrenia

Anonymous
So the blockchain says I sent $100.

Anonymous
12:35 PM
My ledger says I sent $17.

Anonymous
So now the money in my ledger is totally stuck

Anonymous
because accoirding to the blockchain i already spent all of the moneyt in that wallet

Anonymous
but i didnt

Anonymous
thats just fucking fantastic...

hmm what coin is this

Anonymous
12:38 PM
BTC.

Anonymous
I actually don't know how this will get fixed, it's fucked.

lol nice bug :|

Anonymous
I think it can't...

Anonymous
Unless that $17 transaction goes through.

@J-- owwww

Anonymous
12:39 PM
But because the fee isn't high enough, it never will...

Anonymous
So pretty sure I just lost $100 LUL

out of interest, might not even make sense as a question, but where did the $100 'go' ?

Anonymous
That's a good question, it didn't go anywhere.

Anonymous
Well, according to my wallet, it is still in my wallet $17.

Anonymous
According to blockchain, my wallet has $0.

Anonymous
12:40 PM
So technically the money is now all in the blockchain.

Anonymous
Because it thinks $100 is going to the place I sent the $17 to.

but they'll only be expecting $17....

Anonymous
But because the fee is too small (which is how it got stuck in the first place) it is still just on the blockchain.

does it allow them to receive more than the expected amount?

Anonymous
12:41 PM
Yeah, exactly.

Anonymous
But it's never going to get to the other side...

@J-- where does the fee go?

Anonymous
The fee goes to the blockchain.

Anonymous
That's the fee for making a transaction.

Anonymous
But the fee I set wasn't high enough, well, it was, it was high enough for $17, right.

Anonymous
12:42 PM
But it wasn't high enough for $100.

I'm confused how it took $100 tho

Anonymous
Because the blockchain thinks I sent $100, the fee isn't high enough.

Anonymous
SO the transaction is literally just stuck in limbo.

Isn't BTC wonderful?

bit flips, bugs, etc :|

Anonymous
12:42 PM
I have no idea, its a bug, clearly.

or you typo'd?

Anonymous
I've never had this issue.

This is why I like banks, lol

Anonymous
No, not typo. Remember, my wallet says I still have $100-17.

(I don't actually like banks)

Anonymous
12:43 PM
But blockchain says I have $0.

@MechMK1 I'm skeptical of crypto currency in general :D

Anonymous
Luckily, this wallet is a Ledger.

@JourneymanGeek I said it before, I think BTC is utterly impractical as currency.

Anonymous
Not a local wallet. So I've asked Ledger what they can do.

Anonymous
12:43 PM
But the answer is likely.... Nothing.

I wonder if it's their bug

Anonymous
It might be, yes.

@MechMK1 the main value is people who know nothing is going all gaga over it

like, they only do transactions once the total is $100 or something
and for some reason, your single transaction got rounded up...

Anonymous
Well, I am using BTC for different reasons to the ones above :D

Anonymous
12:44 PM
It could be a Ledger specific bug, I don't know. I guess I'll find out when they reply to my support call.

@JourneymanGeek Cryptocurrency, to the vast majority of people, is just a betting game.

I'm yet to see any good reasons for using it lol

Anonymous
Well... I am sure you can figure some out.

@MechMK1 and a way to bump up hardware prices

It also speaks to the paranoid... calling them
@J-- good valid reasons.

Anonymous
12:45 PM
Anyways, it's whatever. Money is likely gone, weird bug.

@JourneymanGeek I can't buy an RTX 3080

which aren't just silly, because of them not actually be practical in a real world situation.

Now chia's bumping up storage prices...

I've tried

@MechMK1 I know.
I got insanely lucky with mine ._.

12:46 PM
Ryzen with apu? :(

@JourneymanGeek Where did you buy it?

@JourneymanGeek has 'contacts' ;)

@MechMK1 locally, after trying every single shop in the local PC mall

Anonymous
I want to build a second PC soon, so I can start playing some games again... But all parts are sold out.

Anonymous
CPUs are mostly sold out. GPUs are non-existent.

12:47 PM
Yeah, it's all gone

Anonymous
RAM is through the fucking roof.

@djsmiley2kStaysInside Every time I am mad at my boss, or stressed at work, I buy hardware lol

Anonymous
It's all fucked.

it'll balance out, eventually :S
@JourneymanGeek then from what I know, you're far too stressed

Anonymous
I think it's going to take another year for manufactures to keep up with demand, honestly.

12:47 PM
I should sell my old 1080 Ti for like 500% markup

@djsmiley2kStaysInside this surprises you? :D
actually latest build was mostly planned

@JourneymanGeek you're likely aware I just don't do stress anymore

Anonymous
Yeah, that's the crazy part Mech. I am seeing people sell 1080tis for more than a 3080 LUL

Anonymous
Its fucking bonkers....

@djsmiley2kStaysInside right now... I'm getting my old job back, decided to give the SE job another shot...

12:48 PM
Jesus fuck...

@J-- and... those nvidia cards are not even that good for crypto.

Anonymous
Yeah, I know. But try telling that to people wanting to get rich quick.

Anonymous
They won't listen...

Anonymous
This is a sad fact of life that people are too stupid to know what they're doing and will just listen to any advice from someone random guy on BTC talk.

Anonymous
Welcome to the internet....

Anonymous
12:50 PM
It fucking sucks. I really wanted to build a new PC but it's going to be a while because most of the parts are just sold out.

Soooo how do I bet against BTC...

@J-- :(
@djsmiley2kStaysInside It just dropped so...

DAMN! too late ;)

Anonymous
Yeah, it is dropping right now... Quite a lot.

Anonymous
Mining will become unprofitable again within around 6 months.

12:51 PM
^
which is good

Anonymous
Once that happens then GPUs will reduce in price.

or they go for ASICs or FPGAs

Anonymous
But remember, we still have a huge silicone shortage!

*silcon

Anonymous
So prices are still going to be very high for other components.

12:51 PM
I hope cryptocurrencies just go away

@J-- that's just .... bad luck

The environmental impact of them is pretty awful too
Just saying

@MechMK1 I like the idea of anonymous digital payments

imagine all the worlds corporations finally embracing crypto

Anonymous
12:52 PM
XMR > BTC.

@JourneymanGeek It's not anonymous, really

not the idea of pouring massive amounts of resources into a lottery

only for quantum computing to hit the mainstream and utterly destroy it.

Anonymous
XMR is, Mech.

Anonymous
XMR is very anonymous.

12:52 PM
@MechMK1 I mean, I like the idea of actual anonymous payments :D

How so?

Anonymous
BTC is not, correct.

@JourneymanGeek Got cash for that

Anonymous
How is XMR anonymous? There's no public ledger for one.

@MechMK1 I want to buy stuff over the internet too

12:53 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I know. I would love some anonymous currency too

I.... don't?
what's the point?

Anonymous
@MechMK1 XMR :D

@djsmiley2kStaysInside anonymity?

@J-- Eh, perhaps in a decade, if it's widespread

Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek This is the entire reason I personally use cryptocurrency.

Anonymous
12:54 PM
There are plenty of different privacy related reasons for using crypto.

granted

Anonymous
The banks can go fuck themselves.

right now my government could find out every place I went :D

Anonymous
Anyways, I regret to inform you all: crypto isn't going anywhere.

Anonymous
If you want that, you'll need to back travel to around 2005 and remain there.

Anonymous
12:57 PM
But the people inflating GPU prices they can just go fuck themselves.

Anonymous
They're totally unaware of what crypto even is, some idiot just told them to mine it for "EASY FREE CASH NOW"

Anonymous
And they'll follow any direction which means "free money" even if it involves fucking hurting themselves, holding someone captive, ruining an entire industry collectively.

@J-- Its very much exactly the same as a lottery

Anonymous
Welcome to human greed...

Anonymous
Be right back, gonna go turn my mining rig on

Anonymous
12:59 PM
(not actually, lul)

1:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek but... why?
lol if i could mine at home, i would, but if it involves buying more stuff, it suddenly becomes very much not possible

@djsmiley2kStaysInside I really don't need the government or companies keeping track of everthing I do, even if the interest is aggregate data
@djsmiley2kStaysInside bitcoin mining at this point, or heck, most of the popular cryptocurrencies is out of reach for most home players

so the problem as always is the companies and the goverment lol

Anonymous
1:24 PM
@djsmiley2kStaysInside There is no point running a home mining rig unless you already have one.

Anonymous
In a few months the complexity is going to increase which means you need more powerful and specific hardware in order to mine effectively (FPGAs).

Anonymous
The only reason why GPU mining is so effective right now is because the mining complexity has effectively gone down. It's a bit more complicated than that but that's the TLDR.

Anonymous
So, everyone is buying GPUs to try and make a quick buck, the problem is, when the complexity goes back up, those GPUs won't be able to mine much at all leaving the GPUs pretty much useless.

Anonymous
So all the miners are going to re-sale them but because they would have been pushed at max load for months people aren't going to want to buy them, so they're going to try and hide the cards history and stuff like that, it's just one big disaster.#

Anonymous
1:29 PM
resell *

@J-- my old rig had a "not ex mining card! Honest!" AMD GPU I got cheap for a bit :D

Anonymous
Yeah, I mean, some people are cool about it. Some people will sell at a reduced price and then you know its been used for mining.

Anonymous
But others will not lower the price and they will swear its a good card and then in 3 months it dies from extensive heating issues and you just paid almost full price and you have no warranty or no chance of a replacement or refund.

Anonymous
That's the real issue with reselling cards...

also this is the one time I'd recommend a (standard!) prebuild PC to people wanting to get one
simply cause they're the only way to get modern hardware at anything approaching RRP

Anonymous
1:33 PM
Yeah, pretty crazy how the world is flipped...

Anonymous
Although, give me a sec, I have a funny story about this.

@djsmiley2kStaysInside knows how serious I am about building PCs :D
(and I was lucky to get most of this build done before the madness got worse ._.)

Anonymous
So, one of my friends bought a pre-built for this exact reason.

Anonymous
Now, the build came with a 3090, pretty nice, right.

did he sell it and recoup his cost?

Anonymous
1:38 PM
However, the company also sold just parts, and they made a decent chunk more...

Anonymous
So, they sold his card to someone else to make extra money.

.....
so he got a pc without the card he paid for?

Anonymous
Then told him: "sorry, we don't have any 3090s left, so we'll send the PC with a 3080 and when they come back in stock we'll ship the 3090 over and you ship back the 3080".

Anonymous
Then he had to wait I think... 3-4 months before they had a 3090 back in stocki.

Anonymous
How fucking absurd.

1:39 PM
and he had to ship back the 3080, which they probably also sold at a profit

Anonymous
I was like "dude, just ask for your money back and find another pre built someone will have a 3090 in stock if you buy it as a pre built"

Anonymous
ANd he was like "no its okay ill wait" - 4 months later LUL

@J-- I had planned to get my 3080 from newegg and have a watch on a few models...
how long has it been and its still not available :D

Anonymous
Hmm, last I heard they were mostly restocking in May...

Anonymous
As in, almost all companies would be getting restocks in May.

1:46 PM
I'll believe it when I see it
Granted I'm a few years away from my next upgrade

Anonymous
I have a new PC build planned myself, since, this one can play games but I don't like dual booting - so I'm building an actual PC I'm going to play games on sometimes. Also because I want to get a sim racing rig so.

Oh that's what this is

Anonymous
But, the GPUs are crazy, and I don't want to overpay for a 2080ti. So, I am just going to wait till I can buy a 3090 at retail or around retail.

Anonymous
Could be a while but... Oh well, worth wait, I guess.

Yeah, I get what you mean

Anonymous
1:48 PM
Like, 2080tis cost more than a 3090 right now.

Anonymous
So as long as I can snipe the restock, then I might as well wait.

Funny thing is I did this build cause I was convinced the local PC mall would close down

Anonymous
I got a card I can put in the PC if I buy the other parts anyways.

Anonymous
Gonna get a Ryzen 9 5950x LUL

Anonymous
Very overkill for gaming, I know.

Anonymous
1:50 PM
But I am going to run a bunch of VMs on the PC when I am not using it for gaming.

Anonymous
Basically a mini server type deal.

Anonymous
Since my lab runs on my main host and I don't like that.

This build was like that, started with a 980ti (which replaced a 660 on my old build)

Anonymous
Also sim racing uses a lot of power I noticed after watching videos...

heh, I'm planning on using my 3770 as a VM host/lab box

Anonymous
1:51 PM
Probably going to buy all of this shit after I move anyways. I see little point in purchasing it in the UK and having to ship it when I move.

Anonymous
Yeah, I don't need a crazy lab or anything.

Anonymous
But I got a few VMs you know, I'd like them on a different computer and then the Ryzen 9 will have multi purpose :D

my 'lab'is a buncha NUC-ish machines

Anonymous
Not to mention ,I am sure my girlfriend is going to use it to render videos and stuff.

Anonymous
Yeah, I should really get a NUC type machine...

Anonymous
1:52 PM
COuld be super useful.

at the moment have one as a router, one running node-red, a music streaming server and my torrent client, and planning on up my old NUC as a media center box
and I have a ryzen nuc coming in allegedly from aliexpress

Anonymous
Oh, a music streaming server that is a good idea...

Anonymous
I never thought of that... I have all my music on my PC.

Anonymous
But a server... What a great idea.

lol
I'm running LMS for that
and it works alright with a subsonic client off my phone

Anonymous
1:54 PM
What I want to do when I move, is turn my apartment into one big computer.

Anonymous
I've got a bunch of hardware laying around, I just want everything to be a computer.

I have a bomb shelter in my apartment...

Anonymous
Computer at the kitchen, computer at the bathroom.

so Its entirely possible I might turn it into a server room

Anonymous
1:55 PM
I was going to put a screen in my shower but my girlfriend reminded me that I am not worth a few million LUL

lol
just don't put a camera

Anonymous
I just really wanna use all this hardware and stuff.

Anonymous
HAHAHAHAHAH

Anonymous
What a great idea...

Anonymous
(for future people, im not actually going to start producing amateur shower videos.)

Anonymous
1:57 PM
You know I saw this raspberry pi projectonce i wanted to do, but never did.

Anonymous
someone made like a "smart" mirror.

Anonymous
it had like the weather on it and an alarm and stuff.

Anonymous
i thought that was really cool.

actually the problem with bathroom PCs wouldn't be water
it would be moisture

Anonymous
Yeah, I thought about that when I was looking into having a screen in the shower.

Anonymous
1:58 PM
I wouldn't be able to do it here, I'd need to cut out the wall and everything.

Anonymous
It's pretty unnecessary anyways, it seems cool but then you realise, it is a total waste of every metric imaginable.

lol yup

Anonymous
Speakers in the shower is enough.

Anonymous
That's what I am going to do when I move, I do want a nice sound system in there.

and tbh if I wasn't living in a tiny apartment when I move out, I'd want computer free zones

Anonymous
1:59 PM
That'd be nice.

Anonymous
Fuck a computer free zone :D

Anonymous
Actually, our living room is kinda' computer free.

knowing me, I'd probably run a full DIY smart home
