5:01 PM
Passwords are great: easy to implement, compatible with almost everything, they are as simple as symmetric keys in ASCII format. The bad thing with them is that they are called "passwords" (or "passphrases") and people want to remember them... If only we could mandate passwords to be at least 20 char long, so people would stop trying to remember them.

@A.Hersean You can. People will just find 20 char long things they can remember
passwordpasswordpassword

if users can screw things up they will, so you need to prevent them from having the ability to screw things up
aka, some form of completely transparent authentication

rather make it harder to screw things up than doing it the right way

and even if they do everything right, if they have access to a key they will get social engineered so don't let them have it

@JBis If a system prevents me from accessing my keys at all im never using it :D

5:07 PM
don't let average users have it* :)

We should use a website "passwordresued.io" with an API where any online service could push the SHA-512 (not hardened) of the passwords of their users, and query the database to find if a password as already been submitted (the push and query can be the same operation). That would force users to not reuse their password and to use passwords with enough entropy they do not need to be hardened.

@A.Hersean variation of that exists iirc

The point is for this service to be shared by lots of different organizations.

That's only for leaks

5:09 PM
@A.Hersean I'm sure people will just add the site name and username to their password to make it uniquee

I suggest doing it for every password. Basically leaking all the hashes. FREE THE HASHES!

@nobody Murphy strikes again

And no need for k-anonymity

@A.Hersean That was the first thing ever tried. /etc/passwd used to be readable by everyone

/etc/passwd used to be unbreakable

5:13 PM
^ Sorry I don't understand what you meant

SHA-512 of passwords generated with more than 192 bits of entropy are ensured to be safe (SHA-512 is collapsible, so it cannot be reversed by quantum computers)

"collapsible"?

@nobody what I meant where?
@JBis welcome to crypto.SE

fun

@JBis "collapsable" the spellchecker stroke again

5:16 PM
don't worry, i didn't know how to spell it either

I'm glad you found a definition, because it would have been hard for me to explain it.

coincidentally i got a crash course on quantum computing 101 just yesterday

And the 192 bits of security is due to some computation on the amount of energy it would take a classical computer to count up to 2^192.

@A.Hersean what you meant by /etc/passwd being unbreakable

@nobody Back in the day, a password of 8 char was considered very secure because it would take months to try them all.
When mainframe where less powerful than a pocket calculator (the thing that does not exist anymore now that everybody has a smartphone)

5:24 PM
pretty good article ^

I see, the problem is that computers today are too powerful. We should ban powerful computers. Problem solved!

I agree
Ban quantum computing too

Hey just ban computers outright
That will solve a lot of problems

Dammit Turing

@nobody Or use passwords of more than 128 bits of entropy.

5:27 PM
@A.Hersean That doesn't solve zero days. No computers, no zero days

Even Murphy's law is not yet that powerful, and will not be in the foreseeable future (unless you use SHA3 instead of SHA-512)
No calendar, no zero days.
3
Problem solved.

Anonymous
@A.Hersean :D

@A.Hersean Well if you have no calendars you have literally zero days

Damn

On a more serious note, why haven't we been able to train people to use password managers?
Oh funny thing, I don't use one myself

Anonymous
5:31 PM
Combination of factors.

Because inertia

Anonymous
Users aren't interested.

And lazyness

Anonymous
We often don't explain things that well as infosec professionals or whatever you wanna call us, since we understand it well.

And we would be out of work

Anonymous
5:32 PM
^

:D

Anonymous
The biggest reason of all.

absolutely

Anonymous
We want to keep our jobs, lol.

I think you can make users interested by hacking them and leaking their private photos. Should we start doing that?

Anonymous
5:33 PM
+1

J-- +1 == J ?

No

Anonymous
lul

Anonymous
Wait till I can change my name again. New name: "upsidedownsmileyfaceman"

Anonymous
Everyone knows the upside down smiley is the one and only emoticon.

5:36 PM
J-- decreased the value of so J adding 1 to it doesn't make it equal to J

Anonymous
I only added the "--" because you need 3 characters, I'll be honest.

Anonymous
3 character rule is very annoying.

@nobody I use and have gotten my family to use it...but my dad stores all his passwords in the secure note section instead of the passwords section facepalm

@J-- Zero width spaces aren't allowed?

Since "J--" equals "I", I though you chose it just to annoy people who would like to call you "I".

Anonymous
5:38 PM
@nobody Very good point, I didn't even check.

Wait that would make you a pain to ping

Anonymous
Yeah.. Well, I am here a lot so would it be that hard?

Anonymous
As long as I was still somewhat active I'd just show up.. Right?

@nobody Do you use same password for everything?

Anonymous
If you just used @J would I not appear in the top results?

5:39 PM
@JBis Nooo... not exactly

then how do you remember them all

It's the WE, so bye everyone.

@J-- Oh yes I forgot about the autofill

Anonymous
@A.Hersean Take care.

o/

Anonymous
5:40 PM
@nobody Yeah, thought so. But you're right... If I left for an extended period it would be a pain in the ass to ping me, lol.

@JBis By having as few accounts (that need a secure password) as possible.

nvm

A couple of super secure ones and the other ones are literally something like uncrackablepassword

ah
lol
alright im out too, cya o/

Bye have a good day/night

5:43 PM
This OSED syllabus is making me cry.

Anonymous
Think I'm going to use the majority of my holiday purely to study.

Why? Even if you fail, you learn something

Anonymous
My brain and failing are not compatible.

Anonymous
I HATE it.

Anonymous
It makes me very mad. Very upset.

Anonymous
5:45 PM
And subsequently makes me feel dumb for 6 months and then I won't do anything productive.

Anonymous
If I fail at something I just quite altogether so I cannot possibly fail again.,

Anonymous
Quite self destructive, really. I guess.

Anonymous
You are right though.

Anonymous
I will learn something regardless.

Then how about you just take the course but not the exam?
So you learn and cannot fail

Anonymous
5:47 PM
Or I could just work myself to the bone for 60 days

Anonymous
WHich is likely what I'll do.

Well since you're already doing that I guess it won't matter

Anonymous
Probably not, no.

Anonymous
I think I'll be alright. It is scary but, I know I doubt myself too much anyways so I'm sure I'll actually be okay.

Anonymous
There's just a lot more content than before.

Anonymous
5:59 PM
My internet is so slow today.

Anonymous
Wow.

Mine is slow everyday.

Anonymous
I'd hate that. The internet here isn't as great as it was at my last place but its okay I guess.

Anonymous
What speed do you get?

Depends. Between 2 to 30 Mbps

Anonymous
6:02 PM
Ouch.

Yours?

Anonymous
Here is between 30-100.

Anonymous
But I had 500/500 in my last place.

Anonymous
Honestly though, I rarely need more than 100. So on the best days it is absolutely enough.

Anonymous
It is just nice to have a lot extra, I guess.

6:04 PM
I could get a fibre optic connection, but they are expensive.

Anonymous
I assume you get FTTC right? Just not FTTP?

I can live with what I have right now most of the time so I don't bother to pay more

Anonymous
Yeah, makes sense.

@J-- What's that?

Anonymous
Fiber to the Cab.

Anonymous
6:06 PM
And Fiber to the Premises.

What's the difference? :)

Anonymous
Oh, sorry.

Anonymous
So, FTTC is where the ISP runs Fiber from their exchange to the cabinet which the entire street connects to.

Anonymous
FTTP is where the ISP runs Fiber from their exchange to the cabinet but then fiber to each house.

Oh. FTTP then

Anonymous
6:07 PM
In the first scenario each customer has a copper wire only into their house.

Anonymous
Oh wow, so you have FTTP but they just cap it and charge more....

No cap, but more charge

Anonymous
Yeah, exactly.

I have fiber home, the endpoint is 2m away from me. 200/100 and it's more than enough.

Anonymous
So in their exchange they will literally have a limiter on max throughput/s and you will only get more if you pay for it.

Anonymous
6:09 PM
I only have FTTC here so it is a technical limitation in some sense rather than a payment one.

Anonymous
Unfortunately symmetric lines cost too much in the UK and it depends where you are if you can even get one. Well, if you pay enough you can get anything anywhere but.

Anonymous
6:23 PM
I am finally making the upgrade from Kali 2019.2 to Kali 2021.1

Anonymous
:D

9:39 PM
@AnneBatch Hey

@MechMK1 Hey there!

How're you?

I'm fine master
And you?

Doing fine too ^^

Great. I'm glad for you

9:43 PM
What have you been up to?

Just thinking about what to do haha

Anonymous
10:01 PM
Wow. I hate the way the new Kali looks.

Anonymous
It is awful...
