@kalina ewww - painful
PHP is most definitely a killer app. Look how violent people get when confronted with PHP.
3
@kalina Sounds about right. Although the primary reason to use PHP commercially is that it's available on almost every server.
@FEichinger I call bullshit unless your definition of "server" only includes cheapass shared hosting.
So if you want to sell web code to everyone and their mother, your best option is still PHP.
@Terry I rarely see any host not offering PHP. I see some offering ASP or Tomcat (and recently node, but**** node). The "PHP killers" Python and Ruby are horribly underrepresented outside of dedicated servers.
@PatoSáinz Say whaaat?
14:18
@FEichinger Hence "cheapass shared hosting".
@TerryChia not sure about widely, but yeah there's active ruby communitys doing things outside of web :)
If Python environments were more widespread, I'd switch in a heartbeat. But they aren't. And until they are, it's not worth it for me.
@TerryChia I feel like saying "thanks" but I'm still unsure.
oh no
a simon appeared
room average iq reduced by 90%
the darkness is overwhelming
WAIT A MINUTE
I mean, hi @Simon
I already told you that we're not making out.
14:19
good
@RоryMcCune Interesting. Coming from a non-ruby guy I barely hear anything about ruby outside of web dev stuff.
I'm being mean to you because I know you have an uncontrollable thing for female djs
@TerryChia Ruby Motion (iOS/OSX/soon to be android dev) rubymotion.com
At least Python has that whole scientific computing aspect to it.
@TerryChia shoes / Jruby desktop dev github.com/shoes/shoes4
14:20
which unfortunately means that out of everybody on SE, you're probably going to be the first person to find me
it's a sad story
we should write a book, make a movie
Oh, hey, I'm still ignoring @Simon. Go figure.
it's like a love story where we both hate each other
@TerryChia and of course metasploit :)
@RоryMcCune That's very interesting actually.
I assume though that the community is predominately Rails-oriented?
@kalina There's nothing I don't control, m'am.
14:22
Also, who the rory activated filtering?
filtering?
@TerryChia well by numbers sure, but if you look at confs like scottish ruby conf there's quite a bit of non-rails activity ...
@FEichinger Heroku. Digital Ocean has hella cheap VPS-es. I wouldn't call the environment lacking.
I don't know about you, but I really won't want to write code for people who cannot afford $10/month for hosting.
@RоryMcCune I see. Good to know. :)
I played with Heroku a bit and I gotta say that it's a quite interesting solution.
@kalina "rory" was censored.
14:31
@FEichinger Was your face censored? It's very offensive to me.
@Terry It's not so much about it merely existing. It needs to be widespread, and easy to access for the customer. And there's only a select, obscure few ways of getting that, sadly.
@kalina Have you heard of the genre called Subground?
no, but a quick google implies it's an artist not a genre
oh right
subgenre of hard style
thatexplainseverything
Yeah. It's pretty much Electro House with a Hardstyle kick and more bass-oriented
If you wanna look into it Acti would be a good artist to discover. He's the father of Subground.
I really don't like hardstyle
14:37
All this talk of subground and hardstlye just makes me think of ^
and as much as I'm tempting hatred towards me by not even listening to your suggestion
I have a really good reason why not
@kalina Is it the kick that annoys you?
yes
Ah.
but in this instance it's my perforated ear drum and lack of hearing that is preventing me from listening to your noise
14:39
Oh, whoops. Did you go to a party recently?
no
but I did have an epic ear infection in both ears which is nearly sorted
@FEichinger that was me. It's a useful one to censor - in order to avoid flags. It doesn't offend me, but it offends enough people that it's an easy one to just remove to save trouble. Anyone who wants to know the exact word used can see it, but we are less likely to have mass mod invasions
and I have perforated my ear drum on the right, and still sounds like I'm under water
@RoryA Tsk!
"CENSORSHIP! I'M BEING OPPRESSED!" etc
14:40
@kalina B***** peasants!
I blame Alan.
@kalina I'm not you :P
@RoryAlsop F******ing s*** f****** w****** always ruining all of the f****** fun in this f****** place. Unf******believable
also, I went to a catholic school
which means I do technically have a catholic school girl uniform
5
14:42
@FEichinger are my edits better? :oP
@kalina stoppit
@kalina Don't feed @Adnan's fantasies.
@Iszi I am unattainable for Adnan
Or @Simon's, for that matter.
besides, he's all loved up atm
14:43
@BarryCarlyon Steve...
@kalina Now that's a tempting thought :P
@RoryA No, but I don't complain. Not worth it.
pervert
One does not simply say that they have a Catholic School Girl uniform to a room such as this…
get your filthy mind out of the gutter
14:46
@kalina Says Little Miss "angel cake" >.>
tries at a One Does Not Simply meme and fails
@BarryCarlyon announcing I went to a catholic school was only a precursor to pointing out I was suspended for "violating the dress code"
@kalina haha!
oh dear, @fei went really quiet suddenly
I'm in a train.
Not masturbating.
14:47
@ScottPack Caught the latest GoT yet?
But I do want to make a joke about you not-wearing the uniform.
But then I figured it'd get me flagged.
@TerryChia I haven't but thank you for the reminder to fetch it
spoiler alert - someone died
how is that even a spoiler in game of thrones
surely it would be more of a spoiler if somebody lived
Ok, it was one of the most notable deaths in the story.
Better?
14:50
@FEichinger no - please don't get me wrong on this. I just know that sometimes we attract flags that really shouldn't happen, and simple use of the f-word near the k-word can cause this
@RoryAlsop k word?
kitchen?
knife?
kleenex?
@kalina thus your nickname "she who must not be pinged" :op
14:51
KRAKEN?
@kalina I am pretty certain that some folks who pop in here on a flag see your name and go mental. I don't think it's right, but it is obvious that folks do it
@RoryA Hey, I have no problem with that at all.
@FEichinger am now at a loss to distinguish between jokes and non-jokes
:-(
Btw, this was one of the most graphic deaths in GoT so far imo, and that's saying a lot.
(And on that note, me getting suspended for the mere presence of kalina would be hilarious as shit.)
14:54
@FEichinger you know what I mean though, right?
@FEichinger I could use a laugh. ;)
I've seen folks fire in here and chatban kalina, despite it being someone entirely different who was being mildly offensive
I'm not 100% certain what to do about it
It has been discussed in mod forum, but not much interest from other areas
@RoryA You know full well that I'm one of the people who know that in detail.
@FEichinger I know
@FEichinger but did you want him to know, that you wanted him to know?
14:57
I had to have a pretty strong discussion with a mod from another site to just ask him to leave moderating here up to Sec.SE mods, unless either we are away, or we ask for help
I've got no problem with you trying to mitigate the problem. I'd just like to know, when I'm on mobile chat and can't even see the bloody edit. :P
@FEichinger oh - I see. How did it show up? I just replaced the f-word with 'rory' for fun :-)
and to make it obvious it was me so you'd know who to blame
:-P
I do see a changed message, but not an edit marker. Which, when you replace it with a generic symbol screams "Android is running loose" rather than mod edit.
@FEichinger Get an iPhone then.
@TerryChia speaking of which T-2 hours!!
15:01
@Terry Riiiiight.
@RоryMcCune WWDC? Yawn.
It's probably just a beta of iOS 8.
@TerryChia well it may not be yawn, could be iPhone 6 + iWatch
that could be cool
@RоryMcCune Hmm? I thought Apple usually announced iPhones at other events?
@TerryChia well they have announced hardware at WWDC before but not usually, that said I think they need to do something 12 months between hardware announcements is a bit long in the current market
even Microsoft are faster than them now
WWDC is usually new software builds I think.
Maybe a refresh to the Macbook line.
I'm expecting iOS 8 announcement. I'm not really expecting new iPhones or iPads.
If there is a new iPhone though, I want to see what they do with the SoC.
Another 1.5 - 2x performance bump would be amazing.
15:04
@kalina Absolutely correct. By actively trying to avoid something, you'll very likely not attain it.
@RоryMcCune Btw, you seeing the drama over exploit regulation on Twitter?
@TerryChia I'm hoping for waterproof + improved fingerprint sensor...
@TerryChia I saw a little but not much, is this the EFF thing?
@RоryMcCune Yeah, the EFF and ACLU thing.
My twitter feed is blowing up over it the past few days.
@TerryChia yeah it's an interesting thing... exploit sales is (to me) an innately shady thing like arms sales
@kalina That's hot.
15:07
@RоryMcCune Regulating it is almost definitely an exercise in futility though.
not to say that there's never a reason for it but if you're selling exploits to people you've got to know they may not always be used for "the right" reasons
@DavidFreitag this was not in response to any of the things I expected it to be in response to
@TerryChia sure you can't eliminate it, but turning software bugs into accepted currency is amazingly dangerous in terms of incentives for developers and software houses
at least some people notice it
@RoryAlsop well yeah
it puts people in a position where a struggling open source dev. on a popular project could be very tempted to "write himself a new mini-van" to quote dilbert
15:09
@RоryMcCune nothing shady about arms sales
the man I bought my last sniper rifle off was so friendly
@kalina depends on which end of the gun you are, I'd imagine...
operating out of the back of his lorry
@RоryMcCune I think the primary concern is that regulation might make offensive research illegal. Which is 100% a bad thing.
under a bridge
in the dark
@TerryChia I am researching marijuana
extensively
@TerryChia sure making research illegal is obv. bad as we've seen that the software industry will only move forward when pushed, but perhaps enforcing 1st sale to the vendor at .gov agreed rates would be an option to reduce the mis-use
15:10
@kalina That reminds me of Weeds. Which i still need to finish
my boredom levels are beginning to peak
there will be a critical meltdown soon if they're not bought under control
@kalina Perhaps you should find more testicles to flatten.
I mean... uh.. walnuts.. to flatten.
@RоryMcCune That assumes that vendors will want to buy the bugs though.
@TerryChia ah no you need a law compelling them to :)
Also, gov agreed rates sounds terrible, not all bugs are worth the same amount.
15:15
@TerryChia you'd need a rate card
of course that still leaves the massive prob. of open source bugs...
I have found a bug that allows me full control over a computer
regardless of operating system
@kalina A hammer?
no
flirting with the owner
@kalina With a hammer?
@kalina and now you know why the best "social engineers" tend to be female....
15:17
@kalina Would not work on me.
@RоryMcCune Bug bounties fixes that imo as long as companies actually using the projects are willing to open up their wallets.
@FEichinger sounds like a challenge
@kalina Bring it.
@TerryChia well we've started to see that with the linux foundation money for OpenSSL et al
@FEichinger you wouldn't stand a chance
15:18
Sure, you probably get less money than a private sale but you get the reputation which can lead to lucrative consulting opportunities.
@kalina Bring. It.
@FEichinger wouldn't. stand. a. chance
@TerryChia problem is that .GOVs like the status quo 'cause it lets them buy easily for their "cyber weapons" programme...
@kalina @FEichinger Get. A. Room. :op
@FEichinger Margret Thatcher on a cold evening night.
@kalina I do, if you don't even try.
15:19

 The DMZ

A serious place where infosec is discussed PS we don't do hard...
@FEichinger don't flatter yourself, I never said anything about trying
@RоryMcCune And this is the same government that is trying to introduce regulation. See the problem with that? ;)
@Rory We do! It's ... See above.
@TerryChia yes!
@kalina See, then I win.
as a matter of fact, not trying is part of my strategy
it will seem like a completely casual encounter where you're winning at every opportunity and then BAM
all your passwords, your bank account, etc etc
and you in public with no clothes on
15:20
Talking about open source projects, i'm surprised that three python web frameworks made it into Google's Patch Rewards program but Rails did not. google.com.sg/about/appsecurity/patch-rewards
Dropping me off in the desert?
@TerryChia google like python
Also, what use would my bank accounts be to you, of all people?
@TerryChia I did notice that, guess they're not big ruby fans...
You aren't properly employed and you still make more than I do.
15:23
true enough
I may try to contribute to some of this projects in light of this, hard to say no to money.
I'm not employed at all, technically
at least until I get around to setting up my company
to funnel all of my taxable income through ireland
Shame on you! Trait-- oh, right. Damn.
15:37
you killed chat
it's all your fault
I hope you're sufficiently happy with yo urself
chatkiller
laments the death of chat
Very happy with myself, yes.
So happy, in fact, I didn't even notice it.
15:53
I am officially more active in the DMZ than @RоryMcCune
@kalina congratulations, i didn't realise there were official stats for that
@ton.yeung being an asshole
@ton.yeung Spam?
I guess it could be considered a form of phishing?
16:13
"being" is a verb, silly.
Aaaand the chat died
16:29
Weird, isn't it?
17:01
@DavidFreitag I know how you feel.
@TerryChia I watch it on Monday nights. So roughly 8 hours from now.
@ScottPack Ahh. I think you pretty much know who died already from last weeks episode?
@TerryChia I've read all the books, yes.
I've been looking forward to this episode since Oberyn first appeared on screen.
17:20
Is anyone here actually watching WWDC? I think I'm getting enough exposure by just catching tweets from the fanboys I know who are.
@ScottPack Also, it doesn't look like those guys are going to get funded. They need to double their current amount in 13 days.
@ScottPack Crap. Now I've got 3 to catch up on.
BTW: Apparently you shouldn't watch The Wil Wheaton Project if you're not fully caught up on your SF&F shows. Just because you say "spoiler alert" doesn't mean you're doing it right, if you're only giving the audience about five seconds to find the remote before you show the spoiler.
17:43
Ah, but you're supposed to be prepared and have the remote at hand.
One hour.. one full hour.. trying to find a way to create an animated GIF of a spinning gear with a transparent background and smooth edges.
Impossible!
There's absolutely no way to do it.
and then I thought: "How about a .png with some CSS animation?"
Ahhh.. an hour well wasted
@Adnan Of course that's impossible. You're trying to do that with a gif.
(That said, I suppose you could generate a data URL after polling the background colour ...)
@Avid tried the aeropress, I used columbian coffee, which is a tad to sharp to my liking, but I'm overall very pleased with the result
@FEichinger Well, I had no idea it wasn't possible with gif.
@Adnan Know your formats.
17:54
@FEichinger Uuhhh.. umm.. yeah. You're wrong
A- GIF supports transparent backgrounds
B- GIF supports animations
C- GIF doesn't support you
2
@Adnan Single colour, not alpha. For smooth edges, you need alpha.
D- GIF can handle smooth edges
Well.. shit
Anyway, CSS worked for me jsfiddle.net/u6B9M
@Adnan is that supposed to rotate?
@Adnan As I said, know your formats.
17:57
@Braiam Yeap
@FEichinger While that's a valid advice, I'll opt not to follow it in the case of GIF
never using GIF again
@Braiam Are you supposed to troll?
@Adnan sometimes.... when it's amusing ;)
@Adnan arg, I know why is not rotating, summary firefox != webkit
Is this real? If so, Tim Cook needs to fire someone.
Device Enterprise Readiness Program. #wwdc
@scottp - is that one of your family?
18:13
user image
2
@Xander Saw that on Twitter, though I don't remember if it was from you or someone else. (Or might have been from more than one.)
@Iszi That's where I just found it...I retweeted it. The tweet didn't OneBox well, so I just posted the image here.
18:30
@kalina wrong window?
and that will teach her to leave her phone unlocked
om nom nom
ah that was my second guess
random hacker hacks
@kalina so what is your name?
real name
@LucasKauffman cruel
@rory deletions please
18:34
@kalina sorry I can't do deletions, you need @RoryAlsop for that
or perhaps @AviD if he's about
Sigh
@kalina on the bright side you have someone to set on fire now
Who tells somebody they've just done that
Surely it would be "more fun" if the victim didn't know
@kalina well if you came back to that on the starwall tomorrow sometime after @Adnan and @TerryChia and @Simon had seen it
that'd have been amusing
allo
18:37
evenin'
Why wasn't I invited to the discussion about the D?
18:58
@LucasKauffman Tsk, tsk, tsk.
@FEichinger so has she given you into trouble for stealing her phone like that?
@RоryMcCune That was most certainly not me.
@FEichinger uh huh
I assume it was the owner of the dog that woke her up.
hey I only know what I see, one minute the two of you are flirting up a storm and the next there are salacious comments posted from her phone...
19:07
Well, then, just to clarify this for you: @kalina and I are neither in a relationship, nor in any reasonable physical vicinity that would make it possible for me to steal her phone.
@FEichinger you don't get when someone is pulling your leg do you?
I should've included a smiley :op
I'd rather be a bit overly cautious, because that point is often not as clear as it probably should be.
Some awkward conversations were had already ...
May 20 at 3:57, by Terry Chia
I see chat got weird again.
@FEichinger I wouldn't worry about things being unclear too much this is the Internet and for all anyone here knows we're all dogs, AI's or aliens!
for all I know the person going by @kalina could be a 50 year old man in Bratislava
@RоryMcCune Oh, I don't worry about that. I worry about said awkward conversations.
19:11
and you could be a 34 year old divorcee in ulan bator
Aaaand now @RoryM killed the chat.
19:33
My brain feels like it was anally molested.
NOT that I would know how that feels, but I can imagine.
urrmm, not that I DO imagine, or want to imagine, or spend time imagining...
@AviD ... Your brain ... anally molested ...
2
Crap. This got out of hand.
Although, it is still pretty much the most intellectually stimulating conversation I've had all day.
@AviD Wow, I generally try to only star one post in a series like that but I'm not sure which of those should get it.
Soo ... with your newly-found intellect ... Explain to me, how your brain was anally molested? I mean, that must've been one hell of a long ... uhh ...
2
@Iszi Take mine, it sums it up quite nicely.
@ton.yeung no no, I mean intellectually.
19:35
@FEichinger I think I will. Nicely done.
@FEichinger exactly. another day of training braindead nonprogrammers how to write secure code.
@AviD eval == evil .. done
Also, didja know that the only reason SSL and PKI works is cuz DNS is so darn rock-hard? Us security types keep getting it mixed up.
<-- this for twenty minutes.
I actually saw someone using eval just to avoid writing a 4-way case statement the other day
@AviD So, did they each have a go at ... reaching up to your brain ... from the inside?
19:37
but hell, at least it fills the time.
@AviD riiight
@RоryMcCune I think that is actually too much of a stretch for this bunch.
6GB of RAM all used by chrome :P
well I guess its these 20 tabs of youtube videos
@TerryChia re DSA 4096 bit keys, I'm pretty sure that DSA doesnt support keys that long.
I know originally it was only up to 1024, I think it's now up to 2048.
nope, it's up to 3072.
The Digital Signature Algorithm (DSA) is a Federal Information Processing Standard for digital signatures. It was proposed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in August 1991 for use in their Digital Signature Standard (DSS) and adopted as FIPS 186 in 1993. Four revisions to the initial specification have been released: FIPS 186-1 in 1996, FIPS 186-2 in 2000, FIPS 186-3 in 2009, and FIPS 186-4 in 2013. DSA is covered by , filed July 26, 1991 and attributed to David W. Kravitz, a former NSA employee. This patent was given to "The United States of America as represent...
though that's the first I've seen key of that lenght...
also I doubt thats what the edit was about...? :$
hahaha, this:
11 hours ago, by Terry Chia
@FEichinger It did strike me that Lighty is a less likable version of @Simon.
@nmonkee ta. This seems pretty cool http://t.co/psxncHsVC8
hey @AviD imagine doing code review on that!
@RоryMcCune oh lord. that would suck all kinds of
@AviD yeah but you can bet some devs will find it amusing to do that
@AviD I bet the peeps at Checkmarx will be consuming much alcohol working out how to parse all that nonsense..
hahaha
@RoryAlsop Seems like wild speculation to me. Let's see it from a more reliable source.
19:51
@Iszi yeah, but wild speculation makes the not knowing so much more fun.
but it's ok it's not like the NSA have any previous form of doing that kind of thing
in the absence of evidence prior conduct takes on more significance...
I'm still really disappointed in the way they handled the shutdown. The guides on the site fail to really get across the message that they're leaving Windows Home users out of luck, for one. Nor do they mention a lot of the differences in minimum requirements between TrueCrypt & BitLocker.
Had to figure out the hard way that BitLocker needs a minimum volume size of 64 MB. TrueCrypt was able to go down to < 300 KB!
@Iszi - yes, but interesting nonetheless
@Iszi is that a big deal?
@AviD If you're putting those volumes in the cloud, and the files they're protecting are fairly small, yeah.
That's a metric crap-ton of overhead.
19:55
@Iszi ah, cloud, good point.
I think 64MB is also the minimum for a VHD.
@AviD No, I was able to get down to 20 or less.
ah yeah? interesting. so why does BL need 64?
Actually, I think it can even go down into the single digits. The VHD and file systems only need about 3 MB total.
@AviD No clue. It's not taking any of it up.
Made a 100 MB VHD last night. Formatted as FAT. Protected with BitLocker. 97 MB free.
