@JeffFerland My wife gets over 50mpg in her little city car, whereas I get between 9 and 35 in mine depending on whether I rag it or not. These days it's almost too expensive to rag it.
Just about sorted for getting my Super Tenere back on the road though, which will be useful for the commute
Hi @blueraja-dannypflughoeft, I'm another moderator on Security.SE. The reason your comments were removed was because they were "chatty". We regularly clean long comment strings that don't contain helpful info for other users. Chat here is for discussion.
@RoryAlsop I've never managed to get out of a speeding ticket. Had some reduced, but never waived. Then again, most of my tickets have been from State Troopers. They're generally less lenient.
@RoryMcCune hmmmmm - I wouldn't have done it, but then I am not a fighter pilot. I know those guys have serious reflexes but I would worry about all the other things I have no control over
@Iszi I have never got out of one here either. I think if you are prepared to challenge there are ways, but to be honest, the majority have been the £60 fines. The worst thing is the 3 points on the licence
@RoryAlsop yeah I remember back in the day when I worked at Barrs, there were quite a few people who did a lot of driving and had to get extremely careful when they hit 9
@RoryAlsop Depending on the limit of where you are and how much over the speed limit you are, you can sometimes choose between a driving awareness course or the fine and points.
@AntonyVennard Oh, it's that way round - I have happily gone past speed cameras, police, trafpol etc at that sort of speed. Don't think they bother with anything that low here
@RoryAlsop It's more for automatic things such as static speed cameras etc, I think. Also, static speed cameras aren't always "loaded", believe it or not.
@JeffFerland Sorry, how were they chatty? I was describing why I gave a -1 to his answer (because the entire answer hinges on a completely invalid implication), which is not only allowed but encouraged. It was completely on-topic, relating only to that specific answer. I don't see how that could possibly be considered even remotely 'chatty'.
If the answer hadn't been written by a mod, the comment wouldn't have been deleted.
@RoryAlsop My first ticket was for 25 over. That would have been a mandatory court appearance, dude was nice enough to only ticket me for 15 over which was about $100. This was back around '97.
@BlueRaja-DannyPflughoeft I probably deleted 6 of your comments. It was nothing to do with you posting on my answer, but entirely as you had posted a large number of comments which were overly chatty - as had a couple of others - so I was already there and looking to clear the decks, so to speak. I deleted off all the ones (including my own) which had no direct relevance
@BlueRaja-DannyPflughoeft I would disagree. An up or down vote explanation may be useful, but generally it isn't unless you provide commentary on what should be changed - in such a way that the answer can be edited and updated
@RoryAlsop You deleted four, only two of which were relevant. You deleted my explanation of the -1, and then my response to your response. You also deleted my question asking why you deleted my first comment, without giving me an answer. And the fourth one was on a completely different answer, which I agree was getting too chatty.
In any case, this was clearly nothing but an abuse of power, which is ironic given the question topic.
@BlueRaja-DannyPflughoeft You may think that, but really, we would like to remove almost all comments. They are not a good fit on SE. You think I was picking on you - I removed comments from 4 or 5 people, including me, as they weren't adding anything. The first one I removed was actually from someone else. Also I answered you before deleting, so you should be able to see that.
Comments are not the place to discuss things - they are the place to suggest amendments to the question or answer. Sure, they get used for other things, and if there are 1 or 2 we tend to ignore it, but you and another had already left quite a few so I started by removing your ones on the other question and continued through to mine as the page was open.
Clearly nothing like an abuse of power, but just a necessary cleanup
@RoryAlsop And that's probably one of the reasons why most pilots get killed by driving and not by flying. I have same problems when exiting longer stretches of highways, but they're putting more traffic lights now between highways and local roads, which I find quite smart and useful
@AntonyVennard talking of which, have you seen those waterfall curtains with projected warnings on them before the tunnels anywhere? @D3C4FF posted some links here, but I haven't seen anything like that anywhere in Europe. It's a really neat idea.
I just used a directional microphone to listen to what the gang of hooded youths was talking about on the street below my window. I'm not sure if that was cool or if I need help.
@TildalWave True. No idea. Don't actually know anything about train signals at all! Maybe they do? Would have thought someone would have talked about it though!
@TildalWave Yeah, but they have what amount to traffic lights, and automatic brakes if they pass two reds in a row
crypto QotW post written and scheduled for Monday midday UTC - it is a summary of the top answers on security.stackexchange.com/questions/2202/… rather than an analysis, which I would not be qualified for...
anyone with editor access to the blog should be able to see it
@RoryAlsop well I know you're making sense and that I probably am not ... I'd still like to see it somewhere that's a driving distance away, I don't really care even if it's in a grotto honestly... I'd like to witness people's immediate reaction to it... what might be considered as a funny reaction in a grotto might be pretty dangerous on roads ;)
@RoryAlsop I'm just curious if it can cause an even less appropriate response, like you said before (swerving and such) ... I have no idea how we'd react to such things naturally when taken by surprise, and if it should be used only on drivers that are beforehand tested for reaction to various warnings (as seen on that video), or it would be safe to use without other signalisation also
