@Xander That's lame.
@JeffFerland My wife gets over 50mpg in her little city car, whereas I get between 9 and 35 in mine depending on whether I rag it or not. These days it's almost too expensive to rag it.
Just about sorted for getting my Super Tenere back on the road though, which will be useful for the commute
That should get me some good mileage
Hi @blueraja-dannypflughoeft, I'm another moderator on Security.SE. The reason your comments were removed was because they were "chatty". We regularly clean long comment strings that don't contain helpful info for other users. Chat here is for discussion.
@RoryAlsop Only almost, eh?
@Iszi it got a bit more expensive this week. On the 1 mile drive to the chip shop I managed to get a speeding ticket :-(
@JeffFerland Holy crap - that's an actual username?
@RoryAlsop One mile? You couldn't dodge the cops for one mile?!
20:13
@Iszi They got me about 100 yards after a junction. The hazards of a car that does 0-60 in 4 seconds...
I'm curious though... how much are speeding tickets in your area?
I was hurrying to the chip shop in order to get back home before the kids finished swimming
Latest I got was for 9 over. About 140 USD.
£60 so not bad
this was 12 over
I've had 300+ USD speeding tickets though.
20:14
and they realised I spotted them immediately I came round the corner and was polite and reasonable
These days, those kind come with a mandatory court appearance.
My first ever cost me £600 and taught me not to trust duty solicitors or the legal system
But that was many years ago
probably before @Terry was born
4
Maybe before the advent of the internal combustion engine
2
@RoryAlsop Wow. That's.... (goes to check currency conversion)
But the best I ever saw someone get away with was 120mph over the speed limit
Was quite impressive
Holy crap!
20:17
He was a fighter pilot at the time so got a bit of a rollocking from his squadron leader, but still...
@RoryAlsop that is seriously impressive!
While I have tested my car at that speed I wouldn't do it anywhere without gravel traps and armco
@RoryMcCune impressive or stupid...not sure which
I don't think our speeding tickets go near that high around here. At least, not when "excessive speed" is the only charge.
@RoryAlsop the getting off it is impressive, the speed depends on how safe it was to do that on the road :)
20:19
@RoryAlsop I've never managed to get out of a speeding ticket. Had some reduced, but never waived. Then again, most of my tickets have been from State Troopers. They're generally less lenient.
@RoryMcCune hmmmmm - I wouldn't have done it, but then I am not a fighter pilot. I know those guys have serious reflexes but I would worry about all the other things I have no control over
@Iszi I have never got out of one here either. I think if you are prepared to challenge there are ways, but to be honest, the majority have been the £60 fines. The worst thing is the 3 points on the licence
@RoryAlsop well yeah at that speed a hazard going on to the road or a real numpty is going to be a bad thing(tm)
@Iszi In the UK 12 gets you am automatic ban
@Iszi Isn't sweden one of the worst.. autoblog.com/2010/08/13/…
@RoryMcCune woah
20:20
$100,000 for a fine is bad :) and $1 mill is REAL bad!
@RoryAlsop I've never challenged them. Not even when I've gone to court. (Plead no contest and got alternative fine or payment option.)
Been to court twice, no-show officer twice.
@JeffFerland Lucky.
So I am now up to 6 points, for the next 12 months, then my last 3 pointer comes off
Don't think I have had 0 since 1992...
@RoryAlsop Ours get suspended for 12 in 12 months, 18 in 18 months, or 24 in 24 months.
20:22
But not had more than 6 either - it's all about risk management
@RoryAlsop That's before @TerryChia was born, right?
@RoryAlsop yeah I remember back in the day when I worked at Barrs, there were quite a few people who did a lot of driving and had to get extremely careful when they hit 9
@RoryAlsop Depending on the limit of where you are and how much over the speed limit you are, you can sometimes choose between a driving awareness course or the fine and points.
@AntonyVennard I have never been stopped enough over the speed limit to get one of those
Either that or they don't think it would help more than the IAM I already have :-)
@RoryAlsop I think you have to be not too far over e.g. 35 in a 30. Too far over and you just get the points/fine.
20:25
@AntonyVennard We have choice of fine & points or fine & awareness course. Option for the course is available once per 12 months, up to five times.
@AntonyVennard Oh, it's that way round - I have happily gone past speed cameras, police, trafpol etc at that sort of speed. Don't think they bother with anything that low here
@RoryAlsop It's more for automatic things such as static speed cameras etc, I think. Also, static speed cameras aren't always "loaded", believe it or not.
@AntonyVennard On highways you can usually get away with 10 over around here. They definitely start getting irritated when you're in the 15+ range.
@Iszi Here most Scottish Trafpol get interested about 85+ as well
@RoryAlsop 85+ over the limit? Sure they would.
20:28
@Iszi Yeah I think we have a similar sort of boundary.
@Iszi hahahaha - no, 15 over = 85
Yes, 85 over the limit they might have trouble catching you...
@RoryAlsop Ah. Is that MPH or KPH?
and tbh hit a big enough ramp and you might even take off for a bit.
@Iszi MPH.
@AntonyVennard Not in Italy.
20:29
@Iszi nice. Guessing it is a marketing copcar
wow! and Oh Dear!
@ScottPack Ehh...It comes with the territory. I love much of what I get to do, so the rest is just the bit that I get paid to put up with.
@JeffFerland Sorry, how were they chatty? I was describing why I gave a -1 to his answer (because the entire answer hinges on a completely invalid implication), which is not only allowed but encouraged. It was completely on-topic, relating only to that specific answer. I don't see how that could possibly be considered even remotely 'chatty'.
If the answer hadn't been written by a mod, the comment wouldn't have been deleted.
@RoryAlsop My first ticket was for 25 over. That would have been a mandatory court appearance, dude was nice enough to only ticket me for 15 over which was about $100. This was back around '97.
20:41
@BlueRaja-DannyPflughoeft I agree it probably wouldn't have been noticed. I understand why it was deleted in terms of limited value to others.
I'm trying to think of a way to reword it for something that wouldn't just be an opening of a discussion, but I can't think of anything
@Iszi It's because you don't get stopped frequently enough. I've gotten out of a number of tickets, but I've had to take 15 or so along the way.
Comments describing -1 votes always have value to others - the answerer is not the only one interested in why the answer was given a -1
@BlueRaja-DannyPflughoeft I probably deleted 6 of your comments. It was nothing to do with you posting on my answer, but entirely as you had posted a large number of comments which were overly chatty - as had a couple of others - so I was already there and looking to clear the decks, so to speak. I deleted off all the ones (including my own) which had no direct relevance
@BlueRaja-DannyPflughoeft I would disagree. An up or down vote explanation may be useful, but generally it isn't unless you provide commentary on what should be changed - in such a way that the answer can be edited and updated
21:11
@RoryAlsop You deleted four, only two of which were relevant. You deleted my explanation of the -1, and then my response to your response. You also deleted my question asking why you deleted my first comment, without giving me an answer. And the fourth one was on a completely different answer, which I agree was getting too chatty.
In any case, this was clearly nothing but an abuse of power, which is ironic given the question topic.
@BlueRaja-DannyPflughoeft You may think that, but really, we would like to remove almost all comments. They are not a good fit on SE. You think I was picking on you - I removed comments from 4 or 5 people, including me, as they weren't adding anything. The first one I removed was actually from someone else. Also I answered you before deleting, so you should be able to see that.
Comments are not the place to discuss things - they are the place to suggest amendments to the question or answer. Sure, they get used for other things, and if there are 1 or 2 we tend to ignore it, but you and another had already left quite a few so I started by removing your ones on the other question and continued through to mine as the page was open.
Clearly nothing like an abuse of power, but just a necessary cleanup

@RoryAlsop And that's probably one of the reasons why most pilots get killed by driving and not by flying. I have same problems when exiting longer stretches of highways, but they're putting more traffic lights now between highways and local roads, which I find quite smart and useful
@TildalWave Yes - it helps get your brain down from that speed to something more sensible for local driving.
@TildalWave I like that idea. There's a set on one of my regular journeys that sort of eases you out of motorway (highway in US terms) speeds.
@AntonyVennard talking of which, have you seen those waterfall curtains with projected warnings on them before the tunnels anywhere? @D3C4FF posted some links here, but I haven't seen anything like that anywhere in Europe. It's a really neat idea.
21:25
@TildalWave Nope, not here.
@AntonyVennard I actually have no idea where "here" is in your case... you're in UK?
@TildalWave Yep. England specifically, unlike the Rories who are ofc Scottish.
@AntonyVennard IIRC you were mentioning some French roots... which your name seems to suggest also... you're UK only, or moving back and forth?
@TildalWave I don't have any french roots I know of, but I do speak (okish) French.
@TildalWave Wonder how many tired drivers would swerve to avoid crashing into it
21:28
I quite fancy myself moving abroad in the future, though.
I just used a directional microphone to listen to what the gang of hooded youths was talking about on the street below my window. I'm not sure if that was cool or if I need help.
@AntonyVennard Me too - but it would be to Australia as I have dual nationality and really like the climate
@lynks hahahahaha -were they hip and cool or just talking nonsense
@AntonyVennard I'm asking because maybe there's something like it in the channel tunnel (?)
@RoryAlsop I heard lots of swearing. I was mostly concerned about them vandalising my car.
@lynks I'll bet the US government is hiring.

21:29
@TildalWave You can't drive through the channel tunnel. You can drive onto a train, or take the train, but there's no road through it.
NSA or FBI, take your pick.
@Xander :P
@AntonyVennard well yes, but train operators (what's the name for them?) also need signaling ;)
@TildalWave True. No idea. Don't actually know anything about train signals at all! Maybe they do? Would have thought someone would have talked about it though!
@TildalWave Yeah, but they have what amount to traffic lights, and automatic brakes if they pass two reds in a row
crypto QotW post written and scheduled for Monday midday UTC - it is a summary of the top answers on security.stackexchange.com/questions/2202/… rather than an analysis, which I would not be qualified for...
anyone with editor access to the blog should be able to see it
21:41
@RoryAlsop well I know you're making sense and that I probably am not ... I'd still like to see it somewhere that's a driving distance away, I don't really care even if it's in a grotto honestly... I'd like to witness people's immediate reaction to it... what might be considered as a funny reaction in a grotto might be pretty dangerous on roads ;)
@TildalWave I have only ever seen them in arty installations in posh offices or clubs - never on a road. Would be interesting
@Polynomial - you probably know this one. Just watched it - rather good:
@RoryAlsop I'm just curious if it can cause an even less appropriate response, like you said before (swerving and such) ... I have no idea how we'd react to such things naturally when taken by surprise, and if it should be used only on drivers that are beforehand tested for reaction to various warnings (as seen on that video), or it would be safe to use without other signalisation also
far too many bugs in the production code to face tonight, sleep beckons...o/
