my clients are significantly more lenient than I am -- if it were my server getting blacklisted because some stupid user had the password "123456", that person would be banned for life from using email. This is the 4th time i've tracked down this same problem for this same company. (SAME PASSWORD, EVEN!)

If I were your client I'd configure password complexity requirements ;)

I'm looking for some clear and simple guide on differences between American and English punctuation conventions. Any ideas where to look for that?
This is basically how I try to use it whenever I can: grammar.about.com/od/punctuationandmechanics/a/punctrules.htm But am wondering if there's some substantial differences between British and American English that I should know about?

8:20 AM
@TildalWave "Stop fuckin' up my colourful english mate!"

(NSFW language if you can actually work out what the fuck he's saying)

@Polynomial So I tell the swamp donkey to sack it before I give her a tonk in the tradesmans' entrance and have her lick me yarbles.
@Polynomial Translation: So I told the fat slag to go to sleep before I stick my penis in her arse and make her lick my testicles.

@D3C4FF haha no that's not my intention ;) but we do have an increasing number of posts here that look like they were sent from phones/pads... or they don't bother to capitalize, add punctuation, all that written language bling that actually makes it readable and non-ambiguous

s/go to sleep/go away/
but other than that, pretty much

@TildalWave Yeah no kidding :/ Its a pain in teh butt using the mobile site to do anything other than browse
damn small screens :P

8:26 AM
"sack it" comes from the stereotype of people "running away" carrying a sack on a stick
which is apparently called a bindle.
TIL.

@Polynomial What... ??
O_O

A bindle is the bag, sack, or carrying device stereotypically used by the commonly American sub-culture of hobos, or kids running away from home. The person carrying a bindle was called a , combining bindle with the Average Joe sense of . In modern popular culture the bindle is portrayed as a stick with cloth or a blanket tied around one end for carrying items, with the entire array being carried over the shoulder. Particularly in cartoons, the bindles' sacks usually have a polka-dotted or bandanna design. However, in actual use the bindle can take many forms. An example of the stick-ty...
"stereotypically used by the commonly American sub-culture of hobos, or kids running away from home" - hence "sack it" = run away.

Huh... well wadjaknow!

Is there a way to draft up questions but not post them yet?

@LucasKauffman Yes, I think it's called a text document. :P

8:35 AM
@TerryChia ><
:p

@LucasKauffman if you write a question and leave the page, it'll remain stored
(usually)
but you can't write another question until that one is posted
pastebin is an alternative!

Is this one definitely off topic? Some good answers...
http://security.stackexchange.com/q/37960/485

@RoryAlsop (a) answers don't justify question
(b) the question is a good one, imo

@RoryAlsop it was put on hold (damn, I need to get used to this new temp close) for being too localized, which I think it is... but yes the answer from @Iszi deserves a better question

@RoryAlsop The 2.5 RS' engine was clean, but a lot had to be done.
Rear brakes were done. When I say done I mean that I couldn't even test drive it.
The oil pan was oily but like a lot and it had been sitting in the guy's entrance so it means that it leaks even when it's not running
Rust would have been a problem eventually
A/C didn't work
Differential might be screwed up

@simon - not sounding good
@manish - if folks vote to reopen I'll support that
Otherwise I think it will auto close soon

@RoryAlsop Yeah, definitely not buying it. The dude knocked off 500$ but still not worth it, imo.

12:56 PM
and we are on standby
@Simon sounds like a nice project, but you'd need to invest some money

@Simon Good decision IMO. Once such problems start there's usually no getting rid of them, especially since you can bet your ass the guy was driving it around in such condition also, ruining (or close to) other parts in the process

@RoryAlsop I'd open that one, it's not secure, but I wouldn't call it too localized, it's actually a good Dave example

@LucasKauffman I don't even the time, money nor the space for a project right now, being a student sucks sometimes. I definitely plan to buy a project car in the future though :)
@TildalWave Damn right.

@Simon ha, I always thought to do that as well, turns out that: If you are a student you have tons of time but no money
when you get a job you've got money (not tons unfortunately) but you don't have time

Could we somehow ask OP to make the question more open-ended? He's specifically asking about the method he's devised in the latter part of the question. If that part could go, then I wouldn't have problems reopening it

1:02 PM
@TildalWave are we allowed to edit that out?

@LucasKauffman Try, OP can always revert back to a previous revision if he wouldn't like it.

Well, I'm working full-time right during the summer and doing a maths class at the same time, which is very time consuming. I'd work on the car on weekends with some buddies. One of them just bought his house with a nice garage and he's already looking for a project, hehe.

So I don't care enough to go back and read the transcript. Anyone want to summarize it for me?

Q: Storing passwords on a home computer

ThomasI remember all the passwords (and variations of passwords) that I use for various sites online. The problem is not that I forget a password, but that I forget which password goes with which site. And one usually only gets a few tries logging in somewhere. So my idea is to create a file with the ...

@ScottPack 1) q: reopen this question?, 2) @Simon not buying a chunk of scrap metal that used to be a decent car, 3) ... a bit on the English language before, nothing too important LOL

1:06 PM
Sometimes I really miss my old Volvo.

Yep, it indeed used to be a decent car, bad, bad, bad owners!

@LucasKauffman why isn't it in the reopen queue?

@ScottPack boobs, TerryChia is young, RoryAlso is old, <insert random double-entendre joke>, random eurotrip outtake with a guy talking what I suspect is scouser

It was a 1989 740 Turbo. That was a 2 tonne monster. A friend, who was used to newer Japanese cars, likened it to driving an APC tank.

@TildalWave I put it in there

1:08 PM
@LucasKauffman well I agree with the edit, but the reopen button on the question doesn't work (??) and it's not yet int the review queue (??) LOL

@TildalWave probably won't be in the review queue since I have edit power

It had no cruise, stiff (but not hard) steering, and slow acceleration until the turbo spooled up. sigh

@ScottPack Volvos are pure sleepers. I wasn't aware they were decently fast with the stock engine until one of my friend said he'd buy one.

@LucasKauffman the reopen review queue sorry, shouldn't it be in there?

@ScottPack Welcome to the turbo world! I do love it though.

1:10 PM
@TildalWave I voted to reopen it

Interestingly, it's still not in the reopen queue.
@Simon My dad had a turbo Buick when I was in high school. It still had more base pickup than the Volvo.

@LucasKauffman yeah I've found some bug... I had it open and loaded new version once you edited it through clicking on that bar on top of it, and then the "reopen" link didn't work at all... It worked once I hit F5, strange

@ScottPack Top Gear took a Volvo 850 to Africa and drove it around there in the search of the source of the river Nile

@LucasKauffman Yup.

@LucasKauffman Yep and Hammond was rocking a WRX :D

1:12 PM
@LucasKauffman It's a newer vintage, and slightly more rounded than the 740.

@ScottPack rounded? it still looks like a cube to me :p
@Simon best part was with Jeremy and that 'do not roll back' invention

850? Bah. I remember the good ole days when the first number defined the grade, second number was the number of cylinders, and the 3rd number was the number of doors.
@LucasKauffman That was a hilarious failure.

I went to see Top Gear live but I was a bit dissapointed

@LucasKauffman Here we go. It's even the same color as mine. carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/3396/1581/…

@ScottPack that would then make 850 a mighty fine open top roadster with a spare/redundant cylinder even :))

1:15 PM
I have 3 of those OEM rims for sale on Craigslist.

@ScottPack facts about ScottPack

@LucasKauffman Was that the tree trunk?

@Simon yup

Was definitely the most amazing invention of all time.

When I first got that car the drivers seat had trouble adjusting. It would get stuck when sliding back and forth. Eventually I did a deep cleaning, including taking out the seats, and discovered a bayonet from an M1 Garand caught in the mechanism.

1:17 PM
oh it looks like there is such a thing as "straight-five engine" :O didn't know

@ScottPack hahahaha
well that's dangerous :p

Holy crap. So the Volvo 850 really is a five-cylinder. Wonky.
@LucasKauffman Surprise!

@ScottPack did the ladies like your pimpmobile?

@LucasKauffman I was already married and in grad school when I got it.

@ScottPack you married before you went to school O.O?

1:19 PM
We were married between undergrad and grad.

ah wait

@ScottPack apparently, Volvo uses such engines a lot... I'm more of a SAAB than Volvo man myself (no kids LOL) so I had no idea... and some american cars use it also, some Chevys, maybe others too

@TildalWave The best thing about SAAB? Being forced to become a mechanic.
Best thing about Volvo? Knowing that 200,000 miles is the end of the breakin period.

@ScottPack Oh I don't drive them, don't worry... just like their appearances a bit more that's all
@ScottPack heh I had a bike like that once, heavy as **** and you had to ask its forgiveness to stop

too bad cars are so expensive here (well insurance is) I never got to buy one, only thing I bought which had an engine was this:

1:22 PM
SAAB is pretty, I don't disagree. I do like how pre-Ford Volvos had a certain rugged charm. Those hard corners and straight lines were reminiscent of the old days. Back when manliness was defined by the likes of Errol Flynn and Humphrey Bogart.

ended up in a field of melons once with it somewhere on Santorini ... yup looked similar to ^^ on the pic up, only about 200 kg

@TildalWave I always wanted to have a nice Triumph Street Triple

@LucasKauffman raw charms huh? yes I like that also

They're no longer making SAABs, right?

@TildalWave I asked for insurance, at my age they wouldn't give it to me

1:31 PM
dunno how that GM deal went down, prolly not good... but AFAIK they still make airplanes
@LucasKauffman age or years of driving experience?

@TildalWave same name and logo just a different company
@TildalWave age
I need to be 26

@LucasKauffman Whaaaaaaat? Why?

@LucasKauffman strange, it's driving experience here

insurance doesn't want to give it to me here

I was driving by myself at 17.

1:33 PM
@Simon with a motorbike?

@LucasKauffman Car.

@Simon ah yea same
I drive a DS3 atm

@LucasKauffman OH, you're talking about a bike, god damn it.
I get it.

@Simon well not just any bike...
there's many different models but they're all in the beastiality teritory LOL

@TildalWave Pretty. I don't think I'll ever drive one, I'll end up dying.

1:41 PM
@Simon yea I had that same reaction when thinking about starting with BASE jumping

@LucasKauffman Do you tend to react stupidly too often too?

@Simon in what sense was that stupid :p?

@LucasKauffman Like forgetting something essential.

two pairs of jeans and two belts for under £45, incl. next day delivery... I think I have a new favourite clothing site.

@Simon I still can't follow :(

1:45 PM
plus they have Johnny Vegas doing their advertising!

@LucasKauffman I haven't base jumped so I can't really give you an example but I'm assuming that you must follow some steps otherwise it might end up badly. I'm the type of person who'd forget a step.

@Simon yea there are they are quite basic, the problem is that even when you do everything, things can still go horribly wrong. When skydiving you have about 15 seconds to react if something goes bad, with basejumping it's none. If things go wrong, they go wrong badly

@LucasKauffman The adrenaline rush has to be insane though.

I used to really want to do it and then 3 guys I knew of which one was a close friend ended up dying during a jump
@Simon that's why I really wanted to do it

3 of them? That sucks.

1:49 PM
@Simon not in the same jump though, but still
it was quite confronting

Yeah, that's still a high number.

2:00 PM
@ton.yeung yea a few
@ton.yeung One of the guys of Red Bull are even here at the moment
@ton.yeung I don't even know who the pioneer, this guy:
@ton.yeung I'm jumping in Spain at the moment
@ton.yeung aaah Patrick de Gayardon
he did some crazy stunts with flying from one plane to another
@ton.yeung not a lot of people die in flight actually
most people have perfectly deployed parachutes
and then they start making mistakes
@ton.yeung nope, often they turn in too low
@ton.yeung you normally fly a pattern: Into the wind to the holding point, then fly back to the turn in point and then turn around into the wind again
the turn is necessary to land into the wind, however you should land down wind if you can't make the turn safely anymore
the fact you can't turn in safely anymore is already a mistake
the descent itself won't speed up, but the ground speed will significantly
so 9/10 you end sliding over the ground with either your feet or your butt

2:17 PM
@Polynomial What's that a plus size shop then if Johnny Vegas is advertising it? You didn't look that bad on the last photo of you I saw,... tho you were eating dunkin donuts :P :)

@ton.yeung or stuff like this: youtube.com/watch?v=5wz7obtEcN4

@TildalWave most shops that sell jeans don't go above a 36" waist, I'm a 40"
in the UK at least

@ton.yeung that can happen if you do it properly

@ton.yeung I don't know what that is. We don't really do sizes in odd numbers here.

@ton.yeung also this vid is one of best ones I've seen, these guys were dropped wrongly in hte swiss alps and nearly crashed into a mountain

2:25 PM
@ton.yeung I have no idea how much that is... does that mean you're really skinny or well defined?
in inches I can at least convert in centimeters easily LOL

waist in inches would help
^

yarp... tho I dunno really how big my waist is... not that small tho, I've always had "strong bones" :)

oh, 27 inch. christ you're almost invisible!

@Polynomial I'm pretty sure that's never been what she said!
4

@ton.yeung are you a girl?

2:27 PM
@ton.yeung damn imperial units... I'm 6' ... something dunno... 185 cm

^same
@ton.yeung I've got about 15 kg of fat you can have.

@ton.yeung I'm guessing by your nickname, but for a guy of Asian descent that's not that bad actually, I've seen a lot smaller guys... then again, also some extremely tall Chinese ones

@TildalWave Okay, maybe I miscalculated but I think that's 6'10".
Oh, no. Much better. Just short of 6'1".

@ton.yeung oh sorry... I'm not that good at recognising non-European names, never have been

@ton.yeung where you from in Asia?

2:32 PM
@Iszi I'm nothing special here size-wise,... OK maybe I could lose 10 pounds or so but that's a week of being more active tops

@ton.yeung What the hell?!
Ah okay. I've just skimmed the transcript. Makes sense.

Random @Adnan being Random :p

@ton.yeung No, I just read everything weird.
@LucasKauffman 15 KG of fat? What's your weight and BF?

@Adnan I'm 1.86m and I weigh about 98 kgs
I'm fat :p

@LucasKauffman Oh I'll disagree
@ton.yeung Holy shit!

2:36 PM
@ton.yeung so you'd fit about two times in me :p
5

@LucasKauffman That's what she said.
@ton.yeung If you're inside @Lucas, I understand.

@LucasKauffman AWKWARD!! :))

Anybody here with experience in bulking up?

@LucasKauffman so you have a strong middle section? (j/k I'm about same, maybe even a kilo more)

I started 2 weeks ago (serious start, though).

2:39 PM
@TildalWave I do, it was quite awkward when I didn't fit into my jumpsuite anymore :(

@ton.yeung 5% BF!! Holy Shit! That's.. bad.

@LucasKauffman oh good I'm not the only one then :) yeah I talked a day or so ago that I need to get my ass on the bike more often, I'd be usually down to 90 something by this time of the year, but not this year apparently :( I have some completely unworn clothes that I bought last year that I sadly don't yet fit into this year and I wouldn't mind if I did

@ton.yeung Dude, that's barely above what is enough to stay alive.
AFAIK, of course.

@TildalWave I have my 34 jeans which I used to fit into
@TildalWave do you have runkeeper?

I'm 5'9" and am somewhere around 75kg. I haven't weighed myself in a while.

2:42 PM
@ton.yeung I'm just jumping in without reading the transcript. That sounded wrong. :P

@LucasKauffman I'm running into that problem too. My 34s are getting just a little loose.

@ton.yeung 4k calories that's NOTHING! (unless you mean 4000 kcal).

@LucasKauffman I have the computer yes... but I don't think they're called like that for bikes? (dunno)... it connects via USB to the computer and you can keep your data then there (or on smartphone, that's actually how I do it)

@Adnan In the US kcal is the base unit of measurement for calories.

@ScottPack interesting..

2:44 PM
@TildalWave yea
@TildalWave runkeeper.com

@ton.yeung Basically high protein & cal diet. 40-minute gym sessions 3 times/week.
Sore almost all the week

@LucasKauffman Oh that, yeah I forgot about it... I have some software that came with the travel computer, I don't remember how it's called :( It's nothing fancy tho, because I don't wanna kill it with each corner I take a bit too fast

@Adnan So for all non-scientific purposes kilocalorie has been redefined to calorie.

@ton.yeung Holy shit! 200! I can barely bench 80 lbs

So it's legal to have sex with a girl over 16, but it's considered child pornography to video the act. That seems kinda arbitrary. arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/06/…

2:48 PM
@ton.yeung we had a guy like that at kickbox practice today, all bulked up on the upper body but very skinny legs

@LucasKauffman I find that very strange

I think it's this one ^^

@LucasKauffman I see people like that all the time at the gym. Is it really that difficult to add 60 minutes of leg work a week?

@TerryChia In India, the ages for legal marriage are 18 for girls and 21 for guys. Consensual sex at 16. The drinking age is at 21. And now one state High Court ruled that "sex before marriage can be equated to marriage" (in terms of rights owed to the partner in case of a dispute)

2:50 PM
@ton.yeung could be..

@ManishEarth That's even more confusing. O_O

@ton.yeung Probably. But I don't think I'm really well-informed on the subject. I barely know what to eat and how not to injure myself in the gym.

@TerryChia Exactly
@TerryChia Actually, I think that 16=consensual sex bill has not yet been passed, but it probably will be

@ton.yeung yea I used to do it more
@ton.yeung nah he used to box a lot and then went to bodybuilding
@TerryChia crazy article

> He became a federal defendant, charged with “production and possession of child pornography.” His cell phone was a child porn production tool that “had been mailed, shipped, and transported in interstate and foreign commerce in that it was manufactured outside the state of South Carolina” and which therefore elevated the issue to the federal level.
WTF?

2:56 PM
@TerryChia most funny of all he never shared those videos with anyone ... so how can he be charged for "production of pornographic materials"?? wouldn't that necessarily mean some form of distribution should be in place?

*sigh* people and sex!

@TildalWave then there would be an additional charge: distribution of child pornography

I mean... what constitutes "pornography"?

@ManishEarth So a copule can become married without being eligible to be married?

@Adnan you don't want to have sex before marriage right?

2:58 PM
@TildalWave Ask Justice Potter, he has some good ideas.

@LucasKauffman what I meant is what's with all the complicated laws. The age of sexual consent here is 16. That's it. No complications.

@ScottPack dunno who that is :O
