@ScottPack Hello hello

12:21 AM
@ScottPack What time is it for you?

2 hours later…
2:37 AM
@Adnan 10:37pm

2:55 AM
@Xander You fool. The best rep train answers consist of three or four lines. At least one of those lines should be snark.
@TildalWave It is boring. And the end was stupid.
The best part of that episode is probably seeing Arya kill people.

3:21 AM
I haven't watched it yet.
Every night this week we've been dealing with house stuff. Maybe tomorrow.

4:18 AM

4:52 AM
@TildalWave As someone said it, the finale was last week.
This week was just filler

2 hours later…
6:33 AM
@lynks In an interview, Air Force Lt. Gen. Michael Hayden, the NSA's director, laughed when asked whether the NSA had tapped undersea cables. "I'm not going to sit here and dissuade you from your views," he said. But he suggested that access isn't the problem. Rather, he said, the sheer volume and variety of today's communications means "there's simply too much out there, and it's too hard to understand."

Q: Is NSA really storing everything?

DerfderI guess you all know about the case of Snowden. If not: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/09/edward-snowden-nsa-whistleblower-surveillance My question is do you think that NSA (or whoever else) is storing all the emails, phonecalls, attachments chat communication etc. in their datacenters...

these people...

@LucasKauffman Another one...
0
Q: How is NSA sotring all the phonecalls?

DerfderSnowden tells in an interview that NSA is storing all phonecalls, emails and things you cannot imagine. Here it is: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/09/edward-snowden-nsa-whistleblower-surveillance How can this be done? Even Google has trouble to build new data centers fast enough, bec...

@LucasKauffman Rainbow farting unicorns. Heh.

@TerryChia That's classified information

One of the few times I make myself laugh

@Adnan You should write for Hakin9.

8:21 AM
@TerryChia Come on, everybody can come up with bullshit terms and acronyms/initialisms. Try it.

they use Secure High Information Technology

@Terry @Lucas Now it makes sense. He's the FileZilla guy.

Q: Is EU based company Wuala secure Dropbox alternative?

DerfderI am not satisfied with Dropbox security and have found this company called Wuala: http://www.wuala.com/en/about/ They are based in Switzerland, so, I am away from the nasty US spies. But there is, off course, EU spy army too ;), therefore I was sceptical too. Then I saw this picture: The 3r...

Worth answering?..

cant we vote to ban this guy?

@LucasKauffman You just read my mind!
@TerryChia With a better wording of the question, yes. But in its current state, I don't think so.

@TerryChia I think he needs a good slapping

@TerryChia Did he just use the term I made up?

@Adnan I think he suspects that you are working for the NSA.

Honestly, I feel bad for the guy. I could only imagine his level of paranoia.
@LucasKauffman Actually, now that I think about it, yes we can.
@RoryAlsop How many question needs to be closed in a row to trigger an auto ban?

@Adnan I don't think Sec.SE has a question ban.

8:35 AM
@TerryChia Awwww :(

8:55 AM
@adnan - no question ban. But keep flagging, VTC-ing, down voting the bad questions - and point folks at How to Ask

Morgen ;) I see an influx of paranoia related (and bad) questions, is that what you're talking about?

@TildalWave Yup. The same mellon.

@Adnan hehe mellon :) I think we better get used to it in the coming weeks b'cos of the NSA ones, I already got some rather funny comment on one of my answers failing to get the nature of the question and the point I was making at the same time
Keeping in mind the latest surveillance programme PRISM and then to read that "LinkedIn is a fairly big player and as such under constant scrutiny of the public eye, like all the big ones are" just doesn't fits. How can you be so sure about the intentions of the big players ? — R11G 3 hours ago
Keeping in mind doesn't hold that much with some :))

Q: What are the security implications of (not) expiring login screen session?

derfredI manage a single sign on solution (CAS) for a group of related web applications. The CAS specification states that Login Tickets are associated with every login attempt which can only be used once. Our implementation of the login server (RubyCAS) auto-expires these tickets after 90 seconds. Ie....

which is a dupe

9:08 AM
The first account is half-an-hour old.. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmMMMmm

oh shit it isn't a dupe... moar coffee!!

9:32 AM
I think we have a hacked into account
I'm rolling back questions to previous revisions, is there anything else we can do?
@RoryAlsop @AviD ^ help needed!
This is still with previous username, gravatar and sig: stackexchange.com/users/1545229/jake-konz?tab=accounts

9:58 AM
Flagged on TL for a dev to help
Thanks for rolling back etc
@tildal - Tim post has sorted. Cheers

10:16 AM
@TildalWave are you sure it isnt a ragequitter?
he left a few flags asking to delete some of his own questions...

@AviD on only one Stack Exchange account? dunno could be, either case it needed to be handled by the greater power LOL

@RoryAlsop perhaps we can have an automatic block of any IP in switzerland. also automatically flag any post that mentions Switzerland.
Also Sweden, because it's confusing, and besides, f**k those guys.

@avid and @tildal - is a rage quit across the network apparently
And - have taken the derfder comments ramble off into chat.

@RoryAlsop oh cmon! that was funny...
besides, I really can't stand hearing about Switzerland anymore. Perhaps I should hand in my moddiamond.

@RoryAlsop can't see him doing much anything with other of his SE accounts ... did you mean it's frequent with other users also?

10:26 AM
@AviD Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!

@AviD What about it? They found the nazi gold already? Or the God particle?

@TerryChia Well, that depends. What are your feelings on the Switzerland issue?

@AviD Screw those guys! I wanna abuse mod powers!

@AviD what issue damnit? The yodel?

@TildalWave no, none of that - apparently, all us mods really hate hearing about switzerland. Just in general.
some days I just have NO patience for these people.
on those days I really need to stay off the site, and not comment or moderate at all.

10:28 AM
@AviD Yeah, I like this idea!

@AviD I simply have no idea what you're on about? It's some meme or something? I mean... if you want to convey me a hidden message, you could always find a way you know? Like ... dunno, maybe making it appear in my webserver logs or something :))

@avid - did you notice my patience was wearing thin....

@TildalWave hehe, no, a comment thread on one of those q's....
@RoryAlsop really not at all.

@AviD yes but it's cleaned up and I missed it :(

very well handled, if you ask me.
@TildalWave its all in that public chatroom...

10:30 AM
@AviD Can we do the Norwegians as well?
2

@Adnan yeah! and finland too!
Get rid of all the scandinavians!

@adnan ... I might have already... Ahem
Oh, you mean get rid of...sorry

@RoryAlsop Go on...

@Adnan hehehe

@RoryAlsop lol

10:31 AM
Starred.

@AviD can we keep fjords please? I like fjords.

@TerryChia we can see....

@RoryAlsop When and where?

We need to get rid of the Americans. Damn Americans.

@TildalWave no! I dont know how to pronounce them, and sound like an idiot. Also croissants.

10:32 AM
@AviD How dare you say that!!!

Erm. Some time ago. I am from Orkney, you know, which is basically scandinavian

Finland isn't Scandinavian!

@TerryChia you really think they need any help in that?

meh. I hate pentesting silly little webapps.
thats why I usually avoid it. I really need to be more consistent, do less favors.

@Adnan actually that's what I was always saying too, but a lot of people simply don't agree

10:33 AM
Actually, everybody hates the Norwegians because they have lots of money, and the Swedes because they have lots of hot chicks.

@adnan - that's a reason to hate them?

@RoryAlsop Jealousy is the seed of hatred.

@RoryAlsop you don't hate your neighbors lawn?

@Adnan I thought the seed of hatred was fear?

My neighbour has a lovely lawn. I like it when he tends bits of ours that overlap:-)

10:39 AM
@TerryChia I guess hatred can be seeded from multiple sources.
That was a good security double-entendre

@TildalWave 'course not. It's a great place for him to pee when he comes home drunk.
@Adnan so you're saying hatred is properly random?

@AviD Half of the time I have no idea what I'm saying.

@Adnan and the other half...?
like it was the super bowl!

@Xander Well, when you don't have much of a history you're prone to repeating mistakes of others... US is in the crusade middle ages now, something Europe is still paying dearly for. I think most of the world sees US as some spotty high school bully with bad eating habits.
descriptions might vary, mind you ;)

10:55 AM
@avid- I love his final statement: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/9210/…

@RoryAlsop I think you got the counts wrong. I think all but 3 or 4 were closed.
but seriously, what kind of consipiracy does he imagine he is exposing here?

heh. that guy just offered a 100 rep bounty. he has 9 rep left.

I didn't include closed counts for those that were then migrated or deleted :-)

@RoryAlsop ah, that explains it. but why not? :D

@Lucas You might wanna talk about stuff like this in your answer macupdate.com/app/mac/27393/burnagain-fs
It utilizes a burning mode called 'Packet writing'
@RoryAlsop Well, it's very obvious that you're a Switzerland hater!!
Auf Wiedersehen!

11:08 AM
Yeah - those annoying chocolates. Toblerone was designed to injure the innocent!

@RoryAlsop that's too many brain farts there, it's hurtful and I just skipped the middle because I have a feeling it's just repeating same thing over and over again

Hmmm.. it seems he quit

Q: Could my bank's two-factor authentication be hacked?

DerfderWhen I attempt to log in to my bank, an SMS code is sent to my phone. I then type this nine-character code into the bank's Web site, to login to my account. Is this vulnerable to attack, without hacking the bank's software or server, or without access to my telephone/SMS communications? How cou...

heh. that guy just offered a 100 rep bounty. he has 9 rep left.
:P

Yeah - I think if he doesn't learn then I'll have to ask another mod to suspend, otherwise it will be a sign of my Swiss hating ways

@RoryAlsop not if you do it while eating toblerone!
or swiss cheese!

11:13 AM
Mmmmmmm - cheese

or.... hmm... is there anything else from there?
swiss army knife!

@AviD swatch?

I like skiing and snowboarding
And climbing

@RoryAlsop meh we have all that here too
and the sea which they don't :P

@TildalWave So this is a pissing match now?

11:15 AM
Heh

@TerryChia hehe... frankly, I think teh country we don't mention is mighty nice to visit... but I would rather avoid commenting on how I feel about neutrality of countries or indeed anything at all
imagine our cars being in neutral all the time ... (OK OK I'll stop LOL)

@RoryAlsop and waterboarding

Hahahaha - isn't that the Murkans

@RoryAlsop you hate the swiss?

philipcarterSPAM ANSWER REMOVED SPAM ANSWER REMOVED SPAM ANSWER REMOVED

damn, looks like Flag Day came a few weeks early this year.

can we protect the question too while you're at it?

@TildalWave heh, was already dealing with that when you posted.

@lucas - not so far... ;-)

@AviD cheers!

11:30 AM
@TildalWave done. Dont think its closeworthy though, except maybe as a dupe.

@AviD I didn't vote to close ... it's marked as too localized because it's somewhat limited to Canada... but most of the answers actually don't limit themselves to that, including mine... it's just one that got it all wrong and started answering with US laws and regulations for a question that mentions Canada in the first sentence LOL

@TildalWave that answer could be relevant, if it were to also go into extradition, sanctions, and other cross-boundary possiblities.
on the other hand, if it were to be just canada, that is a bit TL.

@AviD It's Canada....
I thought it has been established the whole country is a joke? :P

Mmmm - I just see bad Willow
Sorry

@RoryAlsop hahaha! i'm actually watching Buffy right now.
Just started on Season 4.

12:01 PM
@AviD dunno it's still one of the biggest countries in the world... for me coming from a relatively tiny country, I simply can't call that TL ;)

@TildalWave meh, its mostly open country and deers.

@AviD And bears! Anyway, while on that extradition issue, what's now with Edward Snowden? Didn't China and US just sign extradition agreement? He's gonna end up being the guinea pig for the agreement if he's really in HK

@TildalWave I didnt know he was. He should probably just hide in Canada, nobody would bother looking for him there...
On another note, doesn't anyone else find him to be a suspicious coincidence?

says he's in HK now and that's what's reported here also
> Snowden checked out of his Hong Kong hotel Monday but remains in the semiautonomous Chinese territory, said Ewen MacAskill, the Guardian's Washington bureau chief.

> ... and acts as catalyst for the fundamental change in Yossarian's mentality and outlook.... a fatal wound beneath exposes Snowden's internal organs which fall out onto the floor.... is horrified at the sight.... "Man was matter, that was Snowden's secret. Drop him out a window and he'll fall. Set fire to him and he'll burn. Bury him and he'll rot, like other kinds of garbage. The spirit gone, man is garbage."

12:08 PM
Personally, I'd go to New Zealand ;)

> ... He looks only to protect his own life and, to a lesser extent, the lives of his close friends. Yossarian turns against the military and refuses to wear a uniform.

@AviD where's that from?
nvm

was also the first thing I thought of, when I heard his name...

@AviD good memory, but catch-22 is fab I loved it back in the days

@TildalWave I read it about half a dozen times, back to back, when I was in the army.

12:14 PM
@AviD I've only read it once tbh but I do have the book so I might eventually read it again, I wonder how I'd feel about it with so much time in between

@TildalWave It's also a different read, when you know how it turns out. I guess its always true to some extent, but because of the storytelling style - jumping back and forth, middle-beginning-end, and so on, it really is a different story if you have an idea what is happening...

I thought the movie was actually pretty consistent with the book... granted, it leaves many things from the book out, but still worth watching
not sure if I'd understand much of it if I didn't read the book tho... most people that didn't felt it was odd and didn't like it as much
at least of my mates
@ZthexhootospohAzthexhootospoh can we help you with something? You seem to be registered to many SE chat rooms and not actively participating at all, which I find a bit odd. :O

@TildalWave well, the book was odd....

@AviD @AviD is that a robot visitor? ^^?

@TildalWave meh, lurkers are all around. not really an issue....

12:26 PM
Probably an NSA feed :-)

@AviD just curious if it's an automated script

@RoryAlsop heh

@RoryAlsop hehe oh that'd explain it ... it takes a special kind of a moron to not feed off publicly available transcripts that don't expose your presence to others

@RoryAlsop I wonder what the people at NSA must be thinking if they look through the transcripts..

@TerryChia that they're not paid enough?

12:28 PM
@TildalWave heh
You think they scan for keywords? We should draw their attention.
NSA NSA NSA NSA NSA NSA NSA!

No worries @tildal

@Simon Morning! You know, you might as well write your approximate location in your profile, if you're telling us all you're in the Americas somewhere ;)

@TildalWave I got busted! I will update this in a sec. (I'm from Montreal)

@RoryAlsop sure, but I've noticed often times before that such script kiddies get discouraged best by fast reaction... if they can't do much within the time they're active and it involved too much effort to get till there, they won't feel it's worth insisting ;)

Good plan
The community will have gubbed them locally, mods destroy accounts, devs add info to block lists etc

@RoryAlsop well if I get involved I often get their IPs in my logs also then, which is an added bonus for me :))

@TerryChia I love that HIMYM and yet they're laughing at us constantly, haha.

What are you two fogies grumbling about?

@ScottPack Your face mostly.

It is pretty.

1:26 PM
You appear to have subdued he chat room. The power of chloroform is amazing...

No doubt.
I swoop in and just shut it down. Man.
This KB strikes me as pretty amazing but I'm hurting myself to figure out exactly why.

1:42 PM
@ScottPack interesting, that's not an attack I've heard of before.. shame the KB doesn't seem to have a lot of technical details...

@ScottPack What does MS mean by URI ports?
Never heard that specific term before.

so have the conspiracy theories started yet about why we close all the questions about how the NSA is storing all the information?

@AJHenderson This is pretty interesting: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/9210/…

@TerryChia Uniform Resource Identifier, it's the more general form of URL
@TerryChia so google.com is a URL (which is a specific form of URI). smb://share.google.com would also be a URI

@ScottPack No, I mean the ports part. I never heard of ports being used in the context of URI before.

1:50 PM
@TerryChia it's less common since the smb or whatever tells the standard port to use, but a non-standard port would still need to be specified

@TerryChia The scheme implies ports, so maybe that's what they mean. I'm not entirely sure, really.
@TerryChia I've never heard the language used in exactly that context before, but it doesn't seem totally unreasonable.

I see it all the time with teamspeak3 URIs where non-standard ports are common

So smb://share.google.com:80 is a valid URI. When parsed it wil attempt SMB protocol against port 80 instead of 445.
Time to go get sheared. bbl

@ScottPack Yeah, it's not unreasonable. I'm just wondering why MS refers to them as URI ports instead of TCP/UDP ports.

@ScottPack manscaping?

2:28 PM
Woooohoo! It seems that I've just joined the sports club!

Interesting.. the new Macbook Air uses PCI-e instead of SATA for the SSDs, just like the Mac Pro.

@Adnan benchwarmer! :P

@TerryChia Any reason?

@Adnan Speed mostly. Apparently the newer models of SSDs are enough to slightly bottleneck a SATA III interface.

@Iszi YOU HEARD IT! JOHN'S RIGHT, BITCH!
@AviD Barber.

2:38 PM
@ScottPack Eh?

@TerryChia Because it's making URI connections, not generic TCP/UDP connections.
@TerryChia The vulnerability appears to be part of the URI processing abstraction layer.

@TerryChia so.... why not use a sata 6gbs?

@TildalWave I don't like volleyball, I never have and I never will. I think it's a silly game

@AviD SATA III is the 6Gbit/s version.

@TerryChia Didn't the Air use PCI-e already? I mean, the gorram thing is just a bank of chips, not even a recognizable SSD

2:39 PM
@Adnan whaaa?? Clearly you don't have beaches near you.
@TerryChia oh duh, I was thinking of sata 3gbs...

@ScottPack Apparently not, the previous model was still SATA according to ifixit.

and you say the new ssds can saturate that? fantastic.

@TerryChia Wow, yeah, this surprises me

@AviD Oh! That's exactly kind that I hate the most! Damn it! I mean what's wrong with good ol' beach football?

2:41 PM
@AviD I don't know about that, apparently that's the justification for the switch. Can't say I have been keeping up with SSD benchmarks.

@Adnan what are you talking about? It's a spectator sport.

@Adnan huh who said anything about volleyball?

> In order to achieve flash storage that's "up to 45 percent faster" than the previous model, Apple switched from SATA to PCIe, and turned to its best pal in the industry: Samsung.

2:42 PM
you really dont like watching that, @Adnan??

@TildalWave I did

@Adnan think of it this way... would you rather be a linesman at a female beach volleyball or man's beach football ? :P

What the fuck is beach football?

@AviD I do, but playing volleyball is what I don't like. There are two very big differences.
@ScottPack This made my day!!

@Adnan who said anything about playing?? you're not supposed play. Just watch.

2:44 PM
Oh, nevermind. Now I understand Adnan's preference of beach football over beach volleyball
4
As opposed to this

@AviD Do you run that strip club I once been to?

@ScottPack lol

@ScottPack Yeah, come on! Who would wanna look at that?

Let's see if we can turn @Adnan around :)

This is fast turning into NSFW. :P

2:46 PM
@TildalWave Ooookay, we're going a little NSFW

In other news, those guys are ripped. I wish my belly looked more like that.

@TerryChia God damn it!!

@TildalWave Is that the signal for The Shocker?

@Adnan Stop staring at dudes and type faster!

@Adnan Wooot? It says NOKIA!!

2:47 PM
@ScottPack Yeah.. I wish your belly looked like that!
May 30 at 13:58, by AviD
creepiness++;

@TildalWave you'd like that, wouldn't you

Here comes @LucasKauffman!

Did someone say, NSFW?

@TerryChia Of course, just when we started talking about hot dudes

he heard we're turning @Adnan around...

2:48 PM
@Adnan I'm making progress, but it's still a little undefined. Thankfully my fur comes in a good pattern.

@AviD Oh.. that was much better than mine :(

@AviD Physically turning? ;)

@ScottPack I'm finding it very difficult to add some meat on the shoulders and arms without stretching my belly. Any tips?

@TerryChia yes, yes that is exactly what I said that @TildalWave and @LucasKauffman meant....
yknow, like your mom.
3

@Adnan Not really. I'm just doing body weight stuff. I'm more trying to sculpt rather than bulk.
@AviD I can't help but think of that scene in Rome where Marc Anthony marries Octavia.

2:51 PM
@Adnan High-protein, low-carbs. Lots of excercise, lots of water.
@ScottPack I think I'm missing the reference....?

@AviD I'm hard-gainer. It's difficult enough to put on 1kg/3 months, I can't afford lots of exercise.

@AviD They're forced to marry each other, neither of them really want to, but he tells her, "Seriously. We're married. Let's at least do this thing." To which she replies, "Fine, whatever." and rolls over as he spits on his hand.

@ScottPack hehe. Is "Rome" a movie?
ah, tv show. not heard of it till now.

@AviD It's a TV show that aired on HBO a few years ago. I think it made two seasons. Good show, worth watching.
Good acting, interesting story, boobs.

Rome is a British-American historical drama television series created by Bruno Heller, John Milius and William J. MacDonald. The show's two seasons premiered in 2005 and 2007, and were later released on DVD. Rome is set in the 1st century BC, during Ancient Rome's transition from Republic to Empire. The series begins with Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul, and the first season concludes with the assassination of Caesar followed by the rise of the first Emperor Augustus, also known as Gaius Octavian. The series features a sprawling ensemble cast of characters, many of whom are based on re...

@ScottPack like GoT but then in the roman times

2:55 PM
The main character was played by Kevin McKidd.
@LucasKauffman Pretty much.

@LucasKauffman With more sex

@LucasKauffman ... was gonna say...

More?

@Adnan MOOORREEE??
so, its porn then.

@AviD Hey hey hey.. I'm still at episode 6 of GoT (Season 1)
@ScottPack So far, yes

2:57 PM
@Adnan I think the sex in Rome was more spurty. The sex in GoT is pretty continuous.

@ScottPack I like continuous sex
2

@Adnan The biggest problem with GoT is that they'll have a hot sex scene around the 45 minute mark, followed by a battle with Others. Talk about killing the mood.

@ScottPack Hot dudes swards-fighting. I don't see the mood killer

@Adnan I've yet to see a pineapple in GoT.

@Adnan is that why you need a whole football team?

3:02 PM
@ScottPack Why do you think Cersei has that constipated look on her face every episode?

@TerryChia Believe it or not I think it's because she's trying to hold in the crazy.

@ScottPack it does sound like you're both talking about the same thing...
though if its in there, it's probably pretty well wedged in.

@AviD You've seen Jamie, right? It's probably everything she can do to keep it from falling out.

lol, a bit too graphic there.

Probably so, yeah.

3:14 PM
at least he didnt get theoned.

@AviD Tbh, I think Jamie would rather lose his penis than his sword arm.

@TerryChia Cersei wouldnt.

@ScottPack Was Theon losing his manhood explicitly mentioned in the books? I don't recall any mention of it.

@TerryChia I don't remember that either.

@TerryChia dat time when he's with those two women while he's getting tortured?

3:18 PM
@TerryChia His teeth got all kinds of fucked up, lost a finger or two, as I recall, several parts of his body were flayed, his face got all kinds of grody. I don't remember his junk ever being fiddled with.

@LucasKauffman Yeah. The torture scenes weren't described in the books.

@LucasKauffman We don't remember that from the novel.

it is possible you blocked it out.

@TerryChia Ah, this comes from the wikipedias.
> By A Dance of Dragons, he has been tortured, flayed, mutilated, and possibly castrated.

@ScottPack I have to sleep now, but scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/36823/…
Let the good folks at Scifi.se answer it. :P

3:26 PM
Good man. Let the nerds handle it.

Is there any relation between ramsay and jon? Or is it just a generic last name for bastards?

@AviD Snow is the last name for bastards born in the north.

@TerryChia you forgot about the nails through feet and such...
@TerryChia ah, thought it was just the starks did that.

@AviD No, each geographic area has a surname that all bastards are given.

@AviD Each region in Westeros has their own bastard names. awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Bastardy

3:35 PM
@AviD So Gendry is named Gendry Waters because he's a bastard born in the Crownlands.
That's also a handy way of knowing immediately who's a bastard and who isn't.

but does make family recognition appropriately confusing.

@AviD They are bastards. They aren't considered part of the family.

@AviD What would you have them do? Take the surname of their mother? Preposterous!

@TerryChia no, I meant the other way - jon/ramsay

@AviD That's kind of the point, though. A bastard has no family.

3:37 PM
@AviD Ahh. I guess it wasn't that clearly explained in the show.
It might get confusing for someone who hasn't read the books.

@TerryChia There are lots of things not clearly explained in the show.

@ScottPack It would seem the birds & the bees are not one of those things.

no, it was actually mentioned, remembering that now. but I meant that it seems like jon and ramsay might be related.

@AviD Culturally, everyone would know that a Snow is a bastard of the North. They may be related, but probably aren't. In any event, whether they are related or not doesn't matter since they're a bastard.
The fact that they are a bastard means their lineage and family relations are completely irrelevant.

@ScottPack ah, I get that.

3:41 PM
You almost have to shift your entire mindset to really get it. Our 20th century 1st world (or 5th in your case) upbringing makes it really hard for us to grok parts of the story like that.

@ScottPack We have to continually remind ourselves that the concept of "all men are created equal" is relatively new in historical terms.

@Iszi Relatively? Hell, we're still trying to develop that concept.

@ScottPack Just because a concept is old doesn't mean that it's fully developed or implemented.

Even the idea of adulthood is more recent than the time period that show is based on. Martin based it on War of the Roses era England. At that time there was no such thing as adolescence, you were either a child or an adult. For boys that happened at 12 or 13 (I can't remember). For women it was first menstruation.
@Iszi Well, I suppose what I mean is that the concept hasn't existed in our culture for very long either. Even the founding of our country was more "All men (not women) who are white and own land are created equal"

@ScottPack Hence the phrase "old enough to bleed, old enough to breed"?

3:50 PM
@Iszi Precisely. Once they've bled they become a woman in the eyes of the law. So sexual congress would no longer be unlawful.

Interestingly, in the same time period, the term could be turned around on the males as well. Once they've reached an age where they're old enough to go into combat, they're old enough to procreate as well.
Yet we deny some of our soldiers the simple privilege of enjoying alcohol for the first three years of their service. And we consider ourselves "civilized".

@Iszi That's the idea. Once a boy reached majority they become a man with all the rights, privileges, and consequences thereof.
