@asadz I wouldn't say I thought the answer we great.... For my voting standards it was to much someone else's work, but clearly not a case of plagiarism.
When I'm working an answer that is properly answered entirely by another source, say most of my work in the PCI-DSS tag, I try to provide context and explain.
It is one thing to say, "No, item 2.2.5 says that is exempted." That's a pretty lame, if factually correct, answer.
It is better to try to explain why it is exempted and good it specifically admitted to their situation.
That goes back to @Thomas' comments about communicating clearly being at least as important as being right.

@ScottPack sorry if i didn't make my questions appealing to you
but this is where knowledge comes in; i had the information i just correlated to the conclusion
i can write it on line yes any standard would work?
but then it would not have meet the FAQ requirments
it was not anyone works? it was just bunch of inputs (intelligently and intentionally picked) so it rhymed
since eric was not agreeing? i had to give some other resource
i think my answer it not void of explanation it so is not
i don't know people are getting votes up for being wrong too :)

9:32 PM
@asadz I still don't see any added value in your answer on security.stackexchange.com/questions/32308/…

well
added value for u or OP?

What you are saying is correct but the question is "Is there any advantage in changing the SSH port, I've seen people do that, but I can't seem to find the reason why?" and not "Can I just change the SSH port without going through change management"

gosh
@LucasKauffman lol
did you not read OP response
he said that YES i can give him the other prespective

If you analyse it, bot me and @ScottPack are talking about the immediate down and up sides of changing the SSH port. What you are talking about is something completely different IMO.

yes i know
that called port flipping
i know it
but i don't see Op mentioning about this in his post
ops
i need coffee lol
i thought u mean on technical levels
sometimes on a switch when these ports flips / led lights go on / off its called port / led flippings
i mis-read u
i appologize @LucasKauffman
i'm not talking different my approach is different
its all management and decision making
when you have unregulated change which allowed the port to do this; we are not just talking about some change in functionality at worse it can mean a attack preparation for disgruntled employee to cover his tracks
make sense...

9:42 PM
@asadz not really because I still do not see what unregulated changes have to do with chaning an SSH port

@asadz If I may be so bold as to summarize. The question asked "Should I change my SSH port?" ScottPack, Lucas, and Jamie answered with various details of the implication of changing the SSH port are. Your answer was about your company's policy. Valid, certainly, but completely irrelevant to the question, and localized to people who work for your company.

you read my last line @LucasKauffman
it has to do a LOT with it

it has nothing to do with it

in tight regulated environment it has a lot to do with it
lmao
you are ignoring something so vital that i won't even debate about it
@Xander its not irrelevant did you not read OP respone

actually I think I have a pretty good understanding when it comes to tight regulation, change management, policies and standard and baselines.

9:44 PM
why are you guys not understanding the perspective
i'm not answering his answer
i have no intention
:)
i'm just giving him the different perspective
i did EVIL

if you are not answering his question then it should be a comment and not an answer

now, i cannot flood so much words
but i guess OP wants clarity and verbosity as well

@asadz And then people downvote you to show you another kind of "different perspective". It all fits together in the end.

it doesn't lol
coz I'm being downvoted for something the OP asked lol

it does

9:47 PM
@asadz No, I did read his comment. But again, your answer wasn't about the difference between a personal web server and a corporate environment in any technical sense, it was about your company's policy. I agree change management is important in a corporate environment, but not an answer to "Should I change my SSH port?"

frankly no offense i see the OP should be the man I should be satisfying
he is my client
i treat my clients very professionally
:)

@asadz It could have be a valuable part of an answer, definitely. But it is not an answer by itself.

@Xander let the OP decide this
when it comes to professional environment not everything is TECHNICAL in nature
where does the C-levels guys goes?

@asadz So, it should have either been a part of an answer, or a comment.

as i said for clarity and verbosity i cannot write it as comment
i don't care downvote me again

9:49 PM
@asadz Did the OP accept your answer? Because if the OP did, then yes, I'd agree that the OP decided that you gave him what he wanted to know.

but i think i have made my point
so you saying there is no life for student who don't pass the exams
or get no admission in M.I.T

@asadz And just to be clear, I did not down-vote you.

@Xander thanks
its not that voting down irks me sometimes i feel you people don't like me...
and that other day i saw terry talking something funny and interesting behing my back
behind*

@asadz I can't help how you feel, but speaking for myself, that's not true. I want to help you improve your answers (from my perspective) because I feel that's beneficial to the site as a whole, so I'll absolutely provide constructive criticism, but I certainly don't dislike you.

hmm
goood
thanks

9:54 PM
@asadz same here, I'm being neutral about the situation, I always down vote answers I consider bad, regardless of who posted them

okay
i think i need a lawyer

lol
well i cannot defend myself like everytime
keeping a straight face gets little edgy

@asadz I think the difference is that we certainly understand your perspective. The concern is that it isn't applicable to the question as asked. Your answer would definitely apply to the question, "I work in an environment where changes are strictly controlled and frowned upon. How should I go about determining if changing the default SSH port fits within our change process?"

@ScottPack i wish the OP had such nice imagination...

9:58 PM
@asadz His imagination doesn't come into it. His question had nothing to do with navigating a change management process it was entirely to do with the technical reasons behind changing a default setting.
Also, for the record, if there's somebody that I don't like in chat I click the little block button so that their messages don't show up on my screen. Which also means I don't talk to them and given heartfelt advice on what I think makes for higher quality contributions.
2

there are two different things I'm afraid his question and his desire? Two very different things, he desired that YES i can give him the different side, (how effectively i responded that different) but he opened himself to a different view
what so amazing about it absolutely NOTHING
i can block one but what about others who are talking / feeding on his left-overs?

@asadz When you block a user, and it only works in chat, none of their messages show up on your screen. You can still see everyone else's messages. It is sometimes confusing, but I deal with it.
When I read the OPs comments to you I read them a little bit different. In the end, he wasn't asking for anything regarding change management. He was wanting to know why someone might want to do something.
Change management is about implementing a change that someone has decided to do. It has nothing to do with deciding if something should be done.
Right. Dinner plans calling for preparations. Gentlemen.

I don't know english as my mother language but his question started with the word (Should) and map this with change management you can get your answer.
would mean something like "Should management be considered of changing default ssh port"?
concerned(typo)
and also YES change management procedures have to be taken in considering whenever you plan for a change? Who authorizes the changes, who is the approval authority, who keeps the revision history, who does the documentation, and most importantly who test , and evaluates the change

Here's the statement verbatim
> Is there any advantage in changing the SSH port....
In this case "changing" would be used more like "modifying" or "altering".

i don't know what your point is...

10:12 PM
My point is that your translation of "Should management be considered of changing default ssh port" isn't accurate.

yes it is
under right context it is
when management have a change management policy there are rules and there are expectations ,and responsibilities defined
its their responsibilty to ensure that they are followed
and it applies to all IT systems
depedning upon scope could be some
depending*

@asadz That's true but it's still outside the scope of the question asked

gosh
of this
i'm tired
i don't want to be rude
because quiet frankly i have lot / loads of respect from people I'm talking with
you and @ScottPack
lets ditch this guy
the OP
lets call it a day

Evening all

ops
i better go now
hi mentor
mentor=@RoryAlsop

10:18 PM
I think the problem is that the question of change management is valid one, but is a few steps past where that kid was.
hey gramps.
And time for dinner.
Gentlemen. @Lucas.

eat well
friend
i hate the kid

Heh

@RoryAlsop Good night old man. Isn't it late for you ?
Should be around midnight in your parts
I just download an ISO and installed three VM just to answer a question; this might be a bit extreme.
However, it turns out that installing NetBSD in a VM from the ISO takes less than one minute.

@ThomasPornin Bored this evening then?
:-)

@Xander It's still late afternoon here.

10:21 PM
Yup. Midnight. Just got back from a tour of old Jaffa / Yafo and dinner, so trying to quickly catch up

@ThomasPornin Po-ta-toe, po-tat-toe. I think we're in the same timezone. :-)

@ScottPack Scott.

@To
@ThomasPornin After 5, it's the evening in my book.

@Xander I was using 18:00 as the threshold, but I'm French.

@ThomasPornin ho ho ho

10:25 PM
@ThomasPornin And I think your answer neatly got around the fact that Vyatta doesn't appear to do switch emulation, from what I can see from the documentation. It appears to be routing only.
@ThomasPornin That would explain it. ;-)

@Xander Honestly I have no idea what Vyatta is; I just answered to the "how do I get a switch with a mirror port in a VirtualBox-based setup"

I see there is still a wee bit of guidance @asadz. Im a bit concerned that your statement 'why are you guys not understanding the perspectivei'm not answering his answeri have no intention' shows that you are kind of missing the point of the site. The first goal of any answer here is to answer the specific question. If you can do that but you feel there is further guidance you can give as well then adding extra viewpoints is useful.

@ThomasPornin Software-based networking, for those who would rather spin up a VM than install an physical router, from what I can tell.

what is the most far out security related topic on this site that I could have a chilled night reading? suggestions?

@TildalWave I have trouble parsing your sentence.
You want something security-related to read tonight ?

10:34 PM
@ThomasPornin something like AI sec systems or similar... dunno really, anything that can be read without causing headaches
@ThomasPornin yup that

The most well-written introduction to cryptography.

@ThomasPornin cheers that'll do nicely! night guys!

10:47 PM
@RoryAlsop i have rage issues
I appologize

11:47 PM
@AviD - Would you happen to know this?

Q: Can I use separate accounts for Windows Phone & Xbox Live?

IsziI prefer to keep my online gaming accounts associated with an e-mail account which is separate from my normal e-mail. So, the Xbox Live account connected to my Xbox 360 is not registered to the same e-mail address I used for registering my Windows Phone. When I went to download games for my phon...
