Dr. Who, more like Dr. Why.
Thank you, thank you. No, I don't do private shows.
Continuum
because Canadians make some very original science fiction
oh and Lost Girl, for Canadian fantasy
Is Dr. Who British?
yes
That's why you took it personal.
eh?
16:05
le fu-
I didn't take anything personal, I don't like Dr Who
ily
/cc: @Adnan
@kalina I don't understand how you don't like the melody of the remix of Pressure by Alesso.
@Simon you linked it
Alesso + pressure?
@Adnan Unsure why you linked a job advert at dropbox to me.. very random!
16:12
Someone complaining about @Adnan's randomness? That's new.
@kalina Go produce more stuff.
I don't wanna
I tell you what
let's do a production race
lawl
both start blank and after 30 minutes we post what we came up with
16:25
I know jack shit.
I don't know him
not sure why it's relevant
He's a nice guy.
fine
give me 30 minutes
I will write something from scratch for you
it won't sound pretty though
this will be good
popcorn
@deed02392 Haha.
Sure, go ahead.
16:34
@David I get the feeling it was for me... stupid ambiguous pinging.
@David @David @David
@TerryChia See, that's okay with me, at least you aren't trying to convey any important information.
what
10 minutes in and I'm already bored
:(
ok that's 7 minutes of audio
let me add some percussion and then I'll upload it
16:43
I was expecting some lyrics that go like: "I hate you" * infinity
no lyrics
Good.
@kalina By the way, you did give me some constructive advice yesterday. ASTEROIDS INCOMING.
ok uploading
20 mins
a wild @Adnan has appeared
16:49
@David That was meant for @DavidFreitag
enjoy 7 minutes of the same thing
It looks like a giant dong.
@deed02392 Aaaand, he disappeared.
rendered at low quality
If you say that this isn't trance, I'll kick you.
16:51
@kalina congratulations, it's terrible, and yet conveys the structure of the majority of music i listen to
o m gee @Simon
#trancefamily
@Simon bass might be a little heavy for trance
it's the right speed though
@kalina Right speed and structure.
but it uses hard drops for everything, which is very untrance
dunno markus schulz does some nice bass-driven trance melodies
@deed02392 Not so much a trance guy.
@kalina You did load some samples you saved, right?
16:52
nope
Sigh.
I browsed to my sample folder and selected a kick, clap, hat, ride and percussion loop
what's your current loop song @Simon
and then I loaded up nexus and used three presets
one for the intro sound
one for the pads
and one for the main riff
@kalina Makes sense.
Quite good for 20 mins.
@deed02392 Hardwell - Spaceman
16:54
the bass line is created using a built in oscillator with a crapload of distortion on it
sidechained with the kick
me <3 distortion.
ah more house then
do you listen to the anjunabeats casts thouogh
@deed02392 Yes but that's not my "main" style. I listen to Hardstyle much more.
abgt
oh right
i started off with that stuff, moved away from it
TRANCE AROUND THE WORLD ...with Above & Beyond
16:55
although i indulged in some hard dance mania vol 4 earlier
YES @kalina
INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURES, WITH MYON & SHANE 54
/wrists
have you got in search of sunrise 11
no, I don't pirate music
except that 1.7tb of music I pirated
what you on about, it's on general release
16:57
I think this is going to be a facedesk moment
but since when does "General Release" mean "free"
^ LOL
i don't understand why else you'd immediately assume when i asked if you'd got it, you'd pirated it
Do you guys use to buy music?
have to have*
I'm assuming no one here buys music though.
16:58
ANYWAY myon & shane's mix on there is epic
what about deep house
been getting into that a lot lately
I occasionally go deep into my house
I found a cupboard the other day
@Simon I do.
lived here 2 years, only just noticed it for the first time
was quite impressive
@TerryChia iTunes I'm assuming?
@Simon CDs actually.
16:59
Oh.
what is a "CD" ?
@kalina I still burn CDs, at least once a month.
I pirate damn near everything else though.
why?!
@kalina Because I still don't have a damn auxiliary port in my new car's radio.
17:00
replace it
with something that isn't from the 80s
But it has a capacity of 6 CDs!
Will probably do it next summer.
...but that's only a fraction of the total capacity of your PHONE
or TABLET
or MP3 PLAYER
@deed02392 Very true.
17:02
when I get my next car I'm actually just going to stick a pc in it
raspberry pi might be more power efficient
@kalina Me too, except it will be to get reading from the ECU and to manipulate the ratios.
either that or dismantle a tablet and integrate it into the dash somehow
hmmm
i wonder how far away we are from having car dashsboards that can mount tablets directly in them
@deed02392 that would never work
there's no industry standard on sizes
whereas the screens themselves are pretty standard sizes
17:04
obviously they would address that with a special release
something not infeasible for apple to do
Oh great, I just remembered that a zombie was trying to eat me in a lake in my dream last night.
so remove one from its surrounding and mount it
It was a female zombie. Damn, I see ladies everywhere.
@Simon the only time a woman would get that close to you is if she wanted to eat your brains
@kalina Can we make this happen?
17:05
@Simon you want your brains eating?
that wouldn't be a very big meal
not much brain
:'(
ouch
walked into that one @Simon
Straight into it.
straight into dat der lake
where da zombie was trying to eat le me-
17:07
le sadness
sounds like minecraft
you could escape the things in water iirc
or was it the walking dead
I'm bored, it's your fault
and the elephant in the room what is why don't they just go to an island already
try irl @kalina
I didn't ask for suggestions on what I should do
i wunna purty
and yet you got them
aren't you lucky
17:17
no
getting stuff I didn't ask for has a completely different name
@kalina Speaking of which, hows your vacation going?
fantastic
I woke up at 8 because my alarm went off
threw my alarm across the room
went back to sleep until sometime later
and... well...
I duno, there's something awesome about it getting to 6:30pm on a Friday and realising you're still in your pyjamas
Think of it this way: the company gave you a huge bonus and several weeks of vacation. The only catch is that you have to go back to work somewhere else.
think of is this way: DON'T TELL ME HOW TO WASTE MY TIME, I'M ALREADY PRETTY DAMNED GOOD AT IT
So tomorrow I'm going to watch every episode of Firefly
and the day after, I'm going to watch every episode of Firefly again
how many are there?
17:24
and on Monday I will be full of Firefly quotes, turn up to work demanding my stuff back, quoting River Tam quotes
@tylerl depends who you ask
there are 14 episodes
but they were never broadcast in the right order
and some of them weren't broadcast
also there is a movie
which is a bit dodgy since it basically kills one of the most likeable characters
So that's 16 hrs. Doable.
and doesn't have a great pretense
also
it's an American TV show
so it's not 16 hours because otherwise it would be >1 hour per episode
2h movie
whereas everybody knows that American TV is hour long slots with 20+ minutes of ads
true
17:26
so it's 1x 80 minute episode + 13x 40 minute episodes + 90 minute movie
@ThomasPornin You ninja'ed me. Two minutes. Of course, with a much smaller and clearer answer.
but because I have immense ADD
I can't watch TV shows
so whenever there is a scene where they're panning over background
or people are making out
or there is loads of exposition that is unimportant to the plot
I skip those scenes
@kalina Probably not caused by drugs, right?
as such it's more like 1x 50 minute episode + 13x 25 minute episodes + 1x 50 minute movie
@Simon actually I am a lot more focussed when I'm high
but yeah it's probably caused by drugs
17:29
@kalina Why don't you quit?
@Simon I have no addiction, there is nothing to quit
I am completed sober right now
haven't even smoked a joint today
Do you often go a day without smoking weed?
sure, sometimes
@kalina sure sure, you're not addicted, you just need it.
I don't need it
I need oxygen
that's something I need.
17:31
I need a new chat room.
@Adnan The most difficult bit of that shuffling algo is the most easily overlooked: how do you turn a random number into a random index from x to y
without it being biased
@tylerl I was actually talking about the CBC question.
@Adnan ah
@tylerl But, yeah. After reading some parts of Thomas' paper, I agree with you.
fish and chips hell yea
17:33
@Adnan In this day and age, should we really still be using CBC?
@tylerl No, but that's not what the question is about.
@Adnan Problem is, everybody does, and everybody does because everybody does.
and why stop now
so then you end up with crap like BEAST
@tylerl Just like everybody is using sha1(password).
and then we all switch to RC4 as if it wasn't broken
Today I'm going to my first LAN party. What should I expect?
17:36
@Adnan lots of offensive odors?
@Adnan A bunch of nerds, red bull and a great time usually.
More nerds than a LAN part... oh, yeah. Exactly as many nerds as a LAN party, actually.
@tylerl There will be at least 2 females. I hope that provides some motivation for the nurds to shower.
@Adnan Do they know what sort of party they're showing up for?
Also, don't we all just use the Internet for that now?
It was cool back in 1996
@tylerl To shower?
17:38
@tylerl Yup. They want to play DOTA and Digital Fortress
lan parties
The social ones like to gather in groups.
@tylerl Well, it's a social venue more than just a multiplayer game.
@tylerl People who use CBC are people who are in the process of designing their own cryptographic protocol, and that's not a good sign.
lul
17:39
@Simon What are you laughing about? You have no idea what the bear said.
@ThomasPornin well, even SSL makes you pick a cipher
@ThomasPornin also, did you like my Bear Bait question from last night?
@tylerl Link, please?
@Adnan Take that, bitch.
I figured for certain you'd materialize to explain how horrible it was
10 hours ago, by tylerl
@ThomasPornin Quantum cryptography offers significant security gains of any mathematical methods because the electron tunneling effects make key distribution completely impossible to intercept. It will render symmetric cryptography completely irrelevant within 5 years.
@Simon Wish me luck. I'm going to face the nurds.
17:43
@LucasKauffman thought that a simple "base64 is an ideal crypto algorithm" would get him to enter the room, but of course that was too transparent.
He has no idea what evil thing I just did
Mouahahahaha
@tylerl Sorry, I was distracted by the animated GIFs which were around it. Also, I understood that you were just stringing jargon terms as if you were Dan Brown (and then I lost interest).
@ThomasPornin My sister is a English Literature PhD. She hates Dan Brown's work with the fire of a thousand suns. She got halfway through one of his books, said "Wait a second.." turned it over to look at the back cover, and then "HE DRESSED THE HERO UP LIKE HIMSELF."
And then world imploded.
@ThomasPornin Also, I think I once heard a QKD company marketing rep say more or less exactly that.
17:53
@ThomasPornin What? Did somebody mention military-grade 256-byte broadband encryption being disarmed by a next-generation firewall virus?
I still can't believe that I actually finished Digital Fortress.
...soo.. tired..
18:11
@Xander Or like in swordfish, where a worm virus actually swims across the screen...
@LucasKauffman Ha! Now Swordfish, I did not manage to make it through.
@Xander Or when they go OH THEY ARE USING A 256 BIT ASSYMETRIC CRYPTO in the last james bond
I felt like, well that shouldn't be too difficult too crack
@LucasKauffman Hey, depends on whether that's RSA or elliptic curves.
@ThomasPornin they didn't detail
When it takes a minute to uninstall to uninstall a tool bar, you know how much of a piece of crap it was.

Q: How to let clients know that they are being spied on

RenanIn the past I have found out that clients were being spied on. This happened twice; in both times I told them. And in both times I got burned for it. I have no regrets and I got a clear conscience. However, I am about to go telling for the third time, so I just have to ask about this. First, some...

@CodesInChaos That's pretty crazy.
19:02
@CodesInChaos Wow.
19:32
Awesome question.
@David No, you're awesome.
It's odd that the word awesome makes such an impact here.
@Xander Did you at least get to the part in Swordfish where he has to, ahem, work under pressure?
@David We were talking about that scene like 2 days ago.
19:48
Sure, I'm on Zulu+48h
Oh, that explains a lot.
20:28
Would that spying question be on topic here?
@CodesInChaos No, I don't think so. I think it's a legal question more than anything.
I've thought about writing an answer where it is, and if I were to, sentence one would be "you need to consult a lawyer before making any final decisions."
@CodesInChaos It really has nothing to do with Information Security. It's "finding bugging devices in your walls and then the mafia gonna get you" sort of security.
20:44
@David Yes. I did. That was perhaps the stupidest scene in any movie in the history of cinema.
@Xander Haha. So very true.
@David Why does this keep coming up?
@tylerl No idea, someone mentioned the movie and I remembered it. If it has come up before I have no idea.
21:09
God donut Microsoft. Why the hell do you need to have this OEM bullshit, why can't a license for Windows just be a freaking license for windows.
That drives me mad.
At work we have OEM licenses (that arrive with laptops), volume licenses (for the enterprise) and MSDN licenses (for our development systems)
All we have are Dell OEM disks. All they will accept are Dell OEM licenses. ANNOYING AS SHIT.
Heck at least you have OEM disks. Lucky not to just have a "rescue" partition
@DavidFreitag Why do you have Dell OEM disks, but not OEM license keys?
I always use Clonzilla to create disks for my repair/recovery partitions.
@Xander My boss bought a bunch of non-OEM licenses on Ebay hoping we could install them with our dell disks
21:12
@DavidFreitag Well there's your problem. :-)
But they didn't come with disks. They did however come with 10mb hard drives.
What kind of keys are they? Retail keys? And where on earth did someone find 10mb hard drives outside of a museum?
They are regular retail keys.
An i have no idea about the drives. They have discrete components on them and everything. They look awesome.
So now i have to burn a new disk and image all fifteen computers again. Oh boy i love my job.
@DavidFreitag Fun.
It's not so bad, at least i get to use FOG to do it all.
If i had to do fifteen computers by hand twice i would be leaving heaving these stupid computers into the nearest dumpster.
It seems like after even one blue screen or kernel panic, i can never fully trust that computer anymore.
21:28
orly
21:55
@DavidFreitag This is why:
Price discrimination or price differentiation exists when sales of identical goods or services are transacted at different prices from the same provider. In a theoretical market with perfect information, perfect substitutes, and no transaction costs or prohibition on secondary exchange (or re-selling) to prevent arbitrage, price discrimination can only be a feature of monopolistic and oligopolistic markets, where market power can be exercised. Otherwise, the moment the seller tries to sell the same good at different prices, the buyer at the lower price can arbitrage by selling to the consu...

@tylerl heh, nice.
