Q: When is allegorization of scripture counter productive?

MikeIf I were to run into the story of the three little pigs accidentally used as a bookmark in my Bible I might draw these conclusions: Clearly the wolf is the Devil trying to devour sinners who are represented as unclean animals under the Laws of Moses.  There are three of them symbolizing complet...

I'm thinking this question should have been on BH.SE instead of Christianity.SE. Either way, I would like to see answers from this group.

@swasheck Alright!
@Jas3.1 I don't mind thinking about this question (it's very creative). But it certainly doesn't belong on BH since it's dependent on a lot of Christian doctrine. (Pointing it out on chat seems like the best course of action.)

@Jas3.1 What a great question! While the example given in the question is clearly loaded with Christian doctrine (as you'd expect on C.SE :-) ), I think there's a doctrine-independent question in there too. The 3-pigs story is an example; the core question is "how do you know when allegory is real versus just making stuff up that sounds good?". I'd welcome a formuation of that question here, and I suspect we could spin a non-Christian allegorial tale if needed.

@swasheck I see our comparison group as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Philosophy. Thanks for digging into this!

Q: How should we welcome new users?

Jon EricsonEvery now and then you'll see a question or an answer from someone you don't recognize. They might have a reputation of 1 or 101, a generic avatar or an image you've never seen before, and they've never contributed anything to the site before. Perhaps you perused the first questions or first an...

@swasheck So roughly 1 view in 20 turns into a vote.
@swasheck And the vast majority of our voting is up votes.
