@rdtsc LM61 on one line and 72IM on the next does seem to be correct markings for LM6172:
page 21
But to have the National logo, this has to be a pretty old part.
Maybe they just covered it up because they weren't supposed to use parts more than 6 months old or something like that.

@ThePhoton hmm well some replacements were ordered. Guess I'll qualitatively compare them to look for differences in performance.

Desoldered old parts is also a possibility. There's a lot of gray-market possibilities that include genuine parts as well

Wonder if there is a name for giving a consumer/company/user too many options or features. For example, say a customer wants cornbread. Some different sizes can be offered. Some different flavors can be offered. But then there are additional, imo, superfluous "features" like the cornbread's color, different packaging, etc. etc.

It would be good to know a word for the idea of having too many features/options... so I can convince upper management that a customer is not going to want a whole bunch of different features that they have to input themselves.
