grEEtings @rawbrawb

@ThePhoton LOL'd at your comment ... TFF

@rawbrawb I couldn't figure out if you were deliberately misleading OP, but if he has requirements he didn't say, I guess that's his problem.

@ThePhoton he's only asked to derive sub multiples, there is no relationship requirement stated.... but he doesn't seem to be able to read a simple schematic.

@rawbrawb I'm thinking duty cycle...
And predictability
or lack of it.

@ThePhoton well ... there is an implied hold time. I mean all the first EPLD's from Altera were Tff based and those designs didn't have any of those issues... it very much depends on how the p-terms are implemented.

1:33 AM
@rawbrawb I'm not fol/lowing...when I think "clock signal" I think 50% duty cycle until somebody says otherwise. (Meaning just because somebody doesn't say they need 50% +/- a few % doesn't mean they don't expect it). Your circuit will give 25% or 75%, depending on the start up state of the FF's.
Gotta go. Later.

@ThePhoton as long as there sufficient hold time on the Q's from the clock each of the lower frequency signals will be 50% duty cycle. There isn't a setup time issue because setup is always asserted for almost the whole clock time. THe 50 MHZ and 25 MHz signals go through a 00->01->10->11 sequence. The 100 MHz clock (since it's +'ve edge triggered) doesn't relate in a normal count sequence. Not sure why you're thinking otherwise, -> one scenario would be -'ve hold time.

1:57 AM
@ThePhoton I know what you're thinking now. of course if you add on one more stage then the duty cycle will be fubar. But the first FF only toggles and the second only needs that input.

2:56 AM
@Jaigus Allo

@Kortuk hey

And "hello" :)

@angelatlarge Hey there! I guess TS is so over trying to pretend to be someone else.

@DavidKessner Your resistors! Now with more bile! They'rrrrrre GRRRRREEAT!

@angelatlarge That's about right. TS is sure more reasonable when he's been taking his meds.

3:09 AM
@Jaigus thanks for dropping by the room :)

So what are you up to tonight? And where about are you located? In just outside of Boulder, Colorado by the way.

I am Trying to get this LED thing with TLC5940 going. I am in Mass.

@angelatlarge That's right. Now I remember asking you where you are before. Duh!

@Kortuk

@DavidKessner I think we talked about this in the beer conversation.
@AnindoGhosh Hola

3:14 AM
@angelatlarge Hi!

@angelatlarge Every other conversation around here is related to beer. :)
50% Beer. 25% TS. 15% Downvotes. 10% Arduino.
2

@angelatlarge "the beer conversation" I prefer, "the electronics conversation"

@Kortuk I manage to combine the two sometimes. Anyone else homebrews here?

@angelatlarge I used to. All grain. But then I had kids and ran out of time for fun stuff.

@angelatlarge I have lost a lot of my time to my work commute, I have a set up to start brewing but have not yet found real time to do it.

3:19 AM
Damn! The weather forecast is crazy. Monday a high of 71 deg. Tuesday, 8-14 inches of snow.

@DavidKessner ugh, I hope I get some snow
I want time off

I have to fly on Wednesday. :(

thanks for pinging me with the troll, feel free to just flag it and I will get to it as I can. I suggest flagging as spam, then his stuff nukes on its own.

@Kortuk I don't always flag the less offensive more lucid stuff. I guess I should...

@Kortuk What makes it nuke? The number of flags?

3:21 AM
@angelatlarge meh, if you are not sure then you can flag for moderator attention and just use "TS" or something
@DavidKessner 3 or 4 flags.

@Kortuk I think Tony's mission is getting us all the "Enforcer" badge (or whatever it is called...)

@angelatlarge yeah, I had thought the same thing before :(

stats profile views 59
helpful flags 41 <--!!!

@angelatlarge The enforcer badge should come with a baseball bat and a ticket to Canada.

@AnindoGhosh Wouldn't that be a hockey stick?

3:23 AM
@AnindoGhosh Only if that is a "High Capacity Baseball Bat".

@angelatlarge No, hockey sticks do not come in Aluminium.

@AnindoGhosh You need to recycle your baseball bat?

@angelatlarge Yes, after enforcing what needs enforcing, there might be some ick factor.

@Kortuk Has TS come into the chat room lately?

@angelatlarge About once a year. But nothing fancy --- extract & grain tea.

3:28 AM
@DavidKessner I believe from some incidents in the past that he scans transcript, at least.

@DavidKessner Does that ever happen?

@angelatlarge It has

@ThePhoton Cool.

For a while I looked into changing careers and becoming a brewer. Then, after talking with the owners of several microbreweries I decided to stick with EE. EE pays 2-3x what a head microbrewer pays.

@angelatlarge What I've got in the fridge right now is homebrewed ESB.
@DavidKessner If you're not a big hop-head you'd have sunk in the brewing business over the past few years.

3:31 AM
@ThePhoton I had a major failure in my last AG brew attempt that was compounded by a major drainage clog.

@angelatlarge I have enough trouble getting extract brew to all go according to plan.

@ThePhoton Yeah, me too, actually

@ThePhoton I didn't like my extract brews. Too much of a metalic tang to them. I had to at least do a partial grain.

@DavidKessner The ESB I've got now has that "homebrewed flavor", but my local shop has a brown ale recipe that comes out really good.

@ThePhoton I like hops, but I also like big and malty brews.

3:36 AM
@angelatlarge Pretty much all the regular size (i.e. >170 tie points) breadboards available these days, and I would speculate the board in that photo, too, have split distribution rails at midway. It's not as uncommon as your answer implies.
@angelatlarge Oh even better. The SYB-130 has each distribution rail split into 3 parts! See this:

@AnindoGhosh Yeah, I just checked the one I had that looks like that OP's and it turns out that it is split 3 way too! I never realized this.
@AnindoGhosh None of the other breadboards I have (and I have a bunch) are split except for some ancient ones.
@AnindoGhosh Thanks, I'll revise

@angelatlarge I have about 30 breadboards dating from 1987 to 2012, and yes, there is one without a split distribution rail. One.
Does anyone have an elektor subscription? I want the article "Modifying Stripboard for SO Packages" from July 2005.

@AnindoGhosh Clearly your breadboards and mine are all different species. If they breed together they will produce sterile breadboards (with no connections)

@angelatlarge What can I say, I love breadboards. I still remember the confusion I had back in college, getting my first breadboard, and not understanding why the supply rail wasn't working at one end of the board - did not know about split rails then, and google wasn't even an idea.
@angelatlarge You should include the SYB-130 specific info I provided in the comment to the question, comments are ignored, answers remain.

@AnindoGhosh You have a comment to the breadboard question?

3:49 AM
@angelatlarge reload the question to see comments I guess
I think I should try to be a rep-ho today, it's horrible that I'm starting the day with giving away easy brownie points!

@AnindoGhosh I didn't even notice the SYB-130 model. Mine is SYB-120.

Somebody's gotta tell this guy not to just stream his homework at us:

OK @angelatlarge go upvote 4 of my answers that you like best, chop chop! :-)

Q: Given a gated SR latch, How do I make it a set dominate gated SR latch?

JustinAnother weirdly worded question in my digital logic book. It doesn't specifically define set-dominant or reset-dominant - nor does it show how to use these in practice with drawing circuit diagrams. I've read and reread the chapters and it doesn't specify how to do this.. I did some research onl...

@AnindoGhosh You mean like we have to... find them?!?!

3:51 AM
@angelatlarge I always look carefully at question photos - the good clues are all there. Also the SYB-120 apparently uses split rails too

@AnindoGhosh Split in three

@angelatlarge Yes, I prefer that people upvote the ones they actually like.

@AnindoGhosh I ripped the backing off
@AnindoGhosh You could give us the links at least. After a couple of beers on a Sunday night.. and Easter is long past :)

@angelatlarge I recently saw, and promptly bought, a breadboard with two sets of 5x2 blocks, one on each side of a single pair of distribution rails - I thought that's an excellent idea, having power down the middle with chips on both sides.

@AnindoGhosh I upvoted your comment, does that count?

3:54 AM
@angelatlarge Just upvote all of mine too! :)

@angelatlarge If I give you links, @Kortuk will say you're my sock puppet. :-)

@AnindoGhosh Really? Maybe I am just an old carmudgeon
@AnindoGhosh So? I am your sock puppet.

@angelatlarge Hush you!

@DavidKessner @AnindoGhosh I am not seeing anything from you guys anyway.

@angelatlarge Oh well. Sigh....

3:56 AM
Don't you guys hate it when you get something to work, but you don't know why the f*** it is working?

@angelatlarge No, I just move to the next in my long queue of projects. Hate is such a strong emotion!

@AnindoGhosh Oh, that! That was pretty awesome, actually. I gave you several upvotes on that by linking to it.

@DavidKessner his account has not made it to enough rep, I dont think, He used to regularly read transcripts though.

@angelatlarge In my office, getting it working is only half of the job. The other half is knowing and proving why it works.

@Kortuk transcripts

3:58 AM
@AnindoGhosh BOTH

@AnindoGhosh It sounded better the way @Kortuk said it. Classy!

@AnindoGhosh In Canada, it's manuscripts. :)

@angelatlarge NOT "that", those. I linked to the entire answers tab, there are many answers in that list.

just exhausting to spend all my website time doing that.

Unless it is when @Kortuk just goes on and on by himself for hours. That's Manifesto.

3:59 AM
@AnindoGhosh 470 rep on one question. Unbe-f***-lievable

@DavidKessner :)

@Kortuk Sloppy. I read manuscripts. For Bollywood movies your better half will some day make you watch.
@DavidKessner GOOD one!

@AnindoGhosh haha, she does not have to make me. Recently I have spent most of my time driving and work. The promotion killed all my free time.

@Kortuk I'll make sure to let you know when a particular screenplay I consider especially onerous eventually makes it to the screen.

@AnindoGhosh please do, I always appreciate movie/book suggestions, but I never make promises I will make it to the suggestion, no matter how much I want to.

4:03 AM
@angelatlarge Probably not. There's a 200 rep/day limit (for rep from upvotes, rep from accepts counts separately).

@angelatlarge Honestly, I suspect that's the trend - reach the non-expert and they will repay you with votes.

@AnindoGhosh generally that is one of peoples main complaints, the most rep always comes from the easiest answers, upvotes dont necessarily reward effort, sorta.

@angelatlarge I'm mostly unfamiliar with this phenomenom, but Anindo has complained a few times about the unfairness of it all.

If all those votes came on one day, he only got +200 for it.
+250 with the bounty, I guess.

4:05 AM
@Kortuk Two book suggestions: Inscrutable Americans, by Anurag Mathur. The book. The movie sucks. ... and Maximum City, by Suketu Mehta. The first will have you in splits, I recognize stereotypes from among my friends in there. The second is an insight into where I live, with incredible amounts of brilliant observation - the underbelly of this city that I once scraped to great enjoyment.

@angelatlarge yeah, about the easiest thing in the world. But, to @AnindoGhosh's credit, that was a good answer.

+265 with the bounty and the accept.

@Kortuk Yeah, it sure was.

@Kortuk The more effort you put into an answer, the more restrictive the "audience". Less audience = less upvotes.

@Kortuk I think I deserve about 100 of those rep for linking to it :)
@DavidKessner You think so?

4:07 AM
@angelatlarge it is a known problem. The more challenging the question the fewer that will take the time to follow it and review answers, the fewer that feel qualified to vote.

Q: What is it that strips vocals from audio when a 1/8" audio jack is partially unplugged?

editorEvery once in a while, my eighth-inch audio jack will slip loose and I'll seemingly lose only the voice part of a track -- leaving somewhat of a "karaoke" version. What I would guess about how audio plugs work suggests that I'd be making this up; however, I've asked and others tell me they've exp...

@angelatlarge To some extent, yes. It is hard to write a good answer that is both specific to the Q, but also generic enough to apply to many readers.

@Kortuk Yes, that is true.

@Kortuk Now that was a question that touched the hearts of the masses.

@AnindoGhosh yes, you should see the jump in page hits we had.

@Kortuk rework the grammar there :-) Dyslexic.

4:09 AM
How in the world did people find it?

@AnindoGhosh yeah, my brain strokes off sometimes, it is worse when I am doing 100 things.
@angelatlarge that was featured on hacker news.

@Kortuk Somebody needs to go post all of the questions I answered on Hacker News.

@Kortuk I see...
@Kortuk ?

haha. No, we can not.

4:11 AM
@Kortuk But people are dying to know!

ha. You guys have a good night. I am heading to sleep so that I am rested if I get a 3 am phone call.
And as @AnindoGhosh has pointed out a few times, I am mixing up sentences, a sign of my brain failing.

@Kortuk Sleep well.

@AnindoGhosh not with my nightmares of the number of socks I have to destroy tomorrow.

Goodnight.
I need to head to sleep too. Job interview on Tuesday, so I need to get off the 4AM to bed schedule

@angelatlarge Good luck!
And good night.

4:13 AM
@AnindoGhosh give my best to jippie
@AnindoGhosh I'll fix up the breadboard answer tomorrow, I promise :)
@DavidKessner Thanks!.
Goodnight

I'm outta here too. G'nite all!

@angelatlarge Sleep well too

@AnindoGhosh In America, we call that "Night".
@Kortuk you feeling like frosted flakes?
Or maybe for a bit of Charlie Sheen?

@W5VO Ha.

Night is fine, but sleep is overrated.

Quick question: how does a native speaker pronounce "LED"? Is it "El - ee - dee" or "led"? (I'm wondering whether it should be "a LED" or "an LED"..)

@CamilStaps You can pronounce it either way. I would almost always use "an elleedee".

user61389
@ThePhoton Thanks :) in that case I'll not edit it out everywhere :)

Especially with the indirect article, one-syllable "led" just sounds really bad to me.

user61389
@ThePhoton Okay, thanks :)

4:53 PM
@ThePhoton agree 100%

@angelatlarge There's a spanking coming due to someone around here.
@CamilStaps One blinky thing.

user61389
:)

@AnindoGhosh ha
@AnindoGhosh you may need a private room for these discussions ^^

@Kortuk What, you've never had a newbie ask you if they could use two blinky things instead of one?
@Kortuk It's simple. I don't have the rep. This parallels economic reality, at least here in Mumbai. The have-nots cohabit in shared accommodation. The haves have more rooms than people (or for that matter, more cars than people even if you count the kids).

@AnindoGhosh I enjoy the reference, I have heard it said before, just not recently. Always entertaining.

5:00 PM
@Kortuk Morning!

@AnindoGhosh I was joking about the spanking discussion. Keep writing good answers and you will have it.
@ScottSeidman Hope your day is going well :)

@Kortuk 12 supervisor demos last week for my design class, and 12 customer demos this week. Nastiest two weeks of my year, every year

@ScottSeidman :)

Hi all.

@angelatlarge - From your breadboard answer: "Your breadboard has of them:". Has 1 of them, has 2 of them, has a plethora of them, has an abundance of them, has a few of them, ... I could go on. :-D

5:02 PM
@DavidKessner Morning.

user61389
Hmm, I'm thinking of adding a bounty at electronics.stackexchange.com/q/64519/17592, I'd like to see more math. But I'm not sure if it's possible to add a bit more math. Ideas?

grEEts! !!!
@CamilStaps WHAT!!! you think EE needs math? begone you! that runs the risk of being migrated ....
;)

@CamilStaps While I have little to add to that question / its answers (mathematical derivations cause me to break out in hives), you have managed to startle me: This is perhaps the first time that I find myself unequivocally in agreement with Olin: The two fields were taught to me to be offset in phase by 90 degrees. 90 degrees which way, from what I recall from college, determines the nature of the universe or suchlike (or dextro something versus leavo something)

user61389
@rawbrawb hi! You're referring to the unit step function questions? :)

Heya @rawbrawb!

5:13 PM
@CamilStaps My head hurts just thinking about it.

@AnindoGhosh I was too! but when I looked back at my texts it shows as in phase. And if you think about it it can't be in quadrature unless there is a complex component.
@CamilStaps there is a joke in there, but me brain is hurting today .... wit evades me ...

user61389
Hehe :) but what would you think? Would it be useful to add in a bit more math without having to copy a whole textbook? Dave says: "The complete derivation from Maxwell's equations fills entire college-level textbooks, and is too involved to get into here."

user61389
Apart from whether you like math or not :P

@rawbrawb And there isn't a complex component? Umm hold on, if there isn't then there's actually a zero-sum net energy twice each wave.

@CamilStaps well it's only a couple of pages in reality. but there is only two key equations that need to be considered. i.e. whether you support a lateral field (gauss) and if the speed of light is a real or complex value.

user61389
5:18 PM
@rawbrawb so a bounty could/would be useful?

@CamilStaps I would venture that what you're needing is not a complete derivation. Also, a bit of research into academic publications should provide a validation of either of the hypotheses: Specifically, I would look at papers researching EM in context of the exotic particle-wave-physics stuff.

@AnindoGhosh I hear ya! but the impedance is real valued - i.e. purely resistive. SO yeah, I still got that concept stuck in me brain too.
@CamilStaps only if there is a mutiny ... ;)

user61389
@AnindoGhosh that's a good idea, I'll try that first then

@rawbrawb Sorry, I have a doubt there - A complex of a complex is not a double-complex, it's still just a complex. Thereby, how does it matter if an impedance is purely resistive? There's a phase relationship, either that relationship is (matching in phase), or it is (not matching in phase) such as in a delay line, to be simplistic.
@rawbrawb groan wasted on these nublets. ;-)

@AnindoGhosh but if the impedance of fee space is resistive (which it is) then E and H MUST be in phase. By definition. Scurries off to textbooks ....

5:26 PM
@rawbrawb Then my long-term storage must be faulty.

@AnindoGhosh ah but there is coconut in a bounty
@AnindoGhosh fawlty

@rawbrawb ughhhh
@rawbrawb What are you trying to do, take away my position as king of the terrible pun?
Hey, for those of you who still remember using breadboards (i.e. not "real engineers"), I want to pick your brains a bit.

@AnindoGhosh friends don't let friends use breadboards ...
enough PPUNishment for now, gotta run.!

@rawbrawb OK, then just this once, I'm looking for advice from non-friends. :-)
Well, not advice really, more like ideas.
@rawbrawb You must try out for the geriatric Olympics sometime, given how often you "gotta run". Unless it's just indicative of a problematic digestive system.

@AnindoGhosh hahaha, nice :P

5:53 PM
@AnindoGhosh :-)

@CamilStaps Back in college, I conducted experiments around how to get an LED to blow up, then light up again through spark generation at the gap. "See, I can make an LED change color".
Black is a color, just to be pedantic.

user61389
@AnindoGhosh Haha :P that's the kind of experiments I like :)

@CamilStaps I was popular in college - except with the lab assistants.

user61389
@AnindoGhosh I think I understand why

6:08 PM
@AnindoGhosh we took a laser power supply at 1kV and a few amp output max and used it on a whole bunch of normal LEDs to change their color. The pop is awesome!

@Kortuk I've done 1 kV 1 Amp, but that doesn't cause the sparkle after the pop reliably. A little higher and it works well.

@AnindoGhosh :)

@Kortuk Our university lab had some primitive, but awesomely spec'ed supplies for vacuum tube / CRT / Xray tube use.

@AnindoGhosh nice!

@Kortuk I heard that they sold off the lot on auction a few years ago. I wish I'd been able to fly out and bid. One lab supply in working condition with three big LED 6-digit displays and about 10 knobs (that's all I remember of it apart from the warning signs) went for a measly $30 or so, I heard. It was like receiving news of the passing of an old friend.

6:14 PM
@AnindoGhosh yes, that sounds like awesome pricing for home use also!

good morning @all

@Kortuk Also great for sound effects. When you powered it up, there was an audible turbine-like whoosh-whine-off to the inaudible-and-PING! then the LED displays would light up.

@jippie hi jippie!

@jippie heyyyyy! How was work?

boring
@AnindoGhosh came up with some good idea's for this evening though :)

6:21 PM
@AnindoGhosh awesome!!!!

@jippie That's good, right? "Not boring" would imply someone's back-up was irretrievable, or some server refused to recognize the RAID controller.

@AnindoGhosh people mess up all the time, but it gets boring once you are able to predict who and with what.

user61389
@jippie what do you do for work?

@CamilStaps some IT stuff

user61389
@jippie what kind of IT stuff? ^^

6:25 PM
@CamilStaps "some"

@CamilStaps I sell my time and knowledge to the highest bidder, usually unix , networking and project managment stuff

user61389
@jippie okay :) cool!

@CamilStaps Like I said, "some". See?
No faith, these young'uns.

user61389

@AnindoGhosh sorry, already did. By the way, if someone wants to upvote one of these, I would be able to suggest as a synonym of .

@jippie We should punish rep and badge ho's. :)

@CamilStaps Done. Just one, or need all 3 upped?

user61389
Thanks :P I waited a long time to suggest that tag synonym! No, one is fine

@DavidKessner I've had enough punishment for a day - I took a 2 hour bus ride to get to a meeting, then a 3 hour bus ride back, because that was the only "easy" way.

@CamilStaps wait a minute? who's the rep slut here?

@AnindoGhosh guys, chat is not for a place to ask eachother to upvote your questions(@CamilStaps)
I can see sharing interesting question, but just posting asking for upvotes, really?

@AnindoGhosh Yeah, that's bad.

Does anyone have any schematics for a binary clock that doesn't use a mincontroller? I want to use either 7400 or 4000 series ICs.

Not me. I do have something with a PIC though, if you're interested in the future.

@Camil, I'm more of an Atmel guy but thank you anyway.

@Andyaka the term "binary clock" implies a 24 hour clock like you use for a while that outputs binary to something like LEDs for human time reference. Think something like this. Would you agree Johnny? — Kortuk 7 secs ago
Would you agree @JohnnyStarr?
@JohnnyStarr same things, different names. (CC@CamilStaps)

Yes

@JohnnyStarr you might want to note it on that question, someone had asked a question of you in comments. If you have already responded I apologize.

@AnindoGhosh I broke my own rule. That Q about Potato cannon sparkers was tagged Arduino...

@DavidKessner The road to Heck starts right there.
