Hiya
I want to use a single GPIO pin, to provide 'Enable' signal to 3 other devices, one after the other, with slight delay. Would an inductor with a flyback-diode be a acceptable way of achieving something like this ?

4:00 AM
@icarus74 I'd rather go with a "one-shot" or monostable multivibrator.
Actually you'd need 2 or 3 of them, but they're cheap. Probably cheaper than inductors.

Umm... as in done using 555 ? Or a dedicated IC ?

You can use a 555 but there's lots of newer alternatives:
I've used 74LV123 before (IIRC) but they all work essentially the same.
No I'm wrong, I'm pretty sure I used 74LVC1G123...but you might rather use a dual package for your job.

Ok.. lots of options
However, I need PHT components... so with min 14pins, it seems to take a bit of space. Cascading 3-4 of them will quickly fill up board space.

@icarus74 Looks like you can get a dual in a 16-pin DIP... you'd probably only need two chips to manage 3 signals...assuming the first one goes immediately when the uC tells it to.

Right.
thanks @Photon

4:08 AM
RC delay and schmitt-trigger buffers is another option...depending how long a delay you want and how fussy you need to be about getting the delay exactly right.

Delay between triggers I am looking at is around 100mS with tolerance of about 20%
Sorry, bad math... delay of about 400mS with tolerance of about 10%

@NickHalden I'm going to study it, how's that? Nothing really specific, but I like ethics (especially political stuff) and philosophy of logic and language. So what's your connection with philosophy?

5:46 AM
@CamilStaps Nothing really, I just find some philosophical topics absolutely fascinating
For example, try defeating the argument that all humans are ethically selfish
Ayn Rand turned me onto the discussion and it's really interesting. It's pretty much impossible to prove that altruism exists...
@CamilStaps I never studied it or anything, just read some books and have done a lot of thinking

6:07 AM
@DavidKessner This guy is trying to better his life wit ATtiny's. We should give him a chance.
good morning @guys

@jippie So I've been up for 20 hours right now
is it still morning???? I feel like @AnindoGhosh.....

@NickHalden I stopped worrying about the time of day (at least here in chat).

@jippie but don't you have to go to work at certain hours? that
is the only reason i keep a schedule at all...
now excuse me while i drank some caffeine

I usaually go to work about 9:30'ish. But today I have lot of other things to do, so I took the day off

@jippie ah nice, i haven't used a vacation day yet... and ive been working for about 10 months so i should have a pretty decent amount saved up
over 2 weeks actually, cuz i get 15 days / year

user61389
6:12 AM
@NickHalden cool! Good to know I'm not a total loony combining electronics and philosophy ;) fortunately it's equally impossible to prove that egoism exists, or at least is our only drive, like some think

@NickHalden we have 26 days/yr and I bought 10 extra.

@CamilStaps yeah, but unfortunately for my peace of mind, that seems the more likely one...
@CamilStaps but i dont have time to discuss right now =/ i have a deadline in 7 hours, lets talk another time about it?

user61389
@NickHalden I can understand that, it feels more likely to me too. Yes, very well!

alright cheers y'all, back to work i go

enjoy @NickHalden

user61389
6:24 AM
Let's see what's happening at school.. see you!

6:37 AM
@CamilStaps Me too have school today!,

6:50 AM
everybody leaving me!?

user61389
@abdullahkahraman I don't really, but I want to have the feeling to be somewhat prepared for my exams. :) fortunately there isn't really anything happening here, so I'm back! (@jippie)

@jippie I am still here :)

user61389
I really don't see why this has to be closed. I removed the subjective parts. Can anyone explain?

Q: Switching from PIC to AVR

Camil StapsI have worked with PIC16 and PIC18s for over three years now and would like to get to know AVR as well. I have no specific project in mind, but would like to try around with the different architectures. uC's software I am familiar with Assembly and C for PIC16 and PIC18. Do the Assembly and C va...

I don't like guys who switch from PIC to AVR
2

6:55 AM
@CamilStaps For my money (speaking as someone who can't even edit, much less close): it asks "what's the best" kind of question, which tends to be suspect, and lots of things all at once, which makes it difficult to have a single coherent best answer.

@abdullahkahraman yeah they should have thought of that before starting to use PIC

@CamilStaps Besides you got your 35 rep on it, what more do you need :) ?

@jippie lol
Look at the prices.. Microchip is a lot cheaper I think..

user61389
@angelatlarge I can understand it's broad and a lot at once, but I didn't ask what's the best

user61389
@angelatlarge 41 even ;)

6:56 AM
@CamilStaps Isn't it implied?
@CamilStaps 41!!?!?!
@CamilStaps Oh, shoot, you so did

user61389
@angelatlarge 9 upvotes, 2 downvotes. No, I just say I want to switch, I don't really care about what's the best

user61389
Where do you see such an implication? I'll edit it out.

I downvote every question that mentions PIC

@CamilStaps Now you are making me justify it... hold on.
@jippie Except that you answer PIC questions

user61389
Otherwise I'll just go to SO :P

6:58 AM
@angelatlarge Keeping low profile and it is still rep.

@jippie rep is rep, true

Q: How simulate trick htc wildfire charger (get max current)

user22988I have an HTC wildfire phone and I'm looking for way to trick this HTC to think it's connected to the original charger. I don't have original so i can't open it to measure. Right now for charging I'm using the USB port built inside a power inverter for solar installation. I also tried a car charg...

@CamilStaps It think the "best" is implied. I am not sure I can point to anything specific.

user61389
I never understand how people can edit a post and not remove the thanks/regards :o

@CamilStaps It's called "being less anal" :)

user61389
7:00 AM
@angelatlarge okay, I'll just go over my post again and try to remove any hint

user61389
@angelatlarge wait, do you mean the 'best' uC as in PIC/AVR or the 'best' programming language as in ASM/C?

@CamilStaps BTW, here's a thing you could build that I am not sure exists: an ISP AVR programer built out of a PIC circuit. And you are the man to build such a thing
@CamilStaps Search around, maybe there is one out there, but it would be a fun project, and useful (necessary) to program AVRs.

user61389
@angelatlarge that's a sweet idea :) after that I can make a PIC programmer with an AVR :)

@CamilStaps Sure. If you still want to program PICs after you get into AVRs :)

@angelatlarge Ah come on! The world of AVRs are so cold! In the PIC world, it is always spring!

7:03 AM
@abdullahkahraman As @CamilStaps says, we have the cookies
@abdullahkahraman Is it warm because the chip is always overheating? :)

@jippie DAMN!

@angelatlarge lol

user61389
@angelatlarge reminds me that I once melted a piece of my breadboard with a PIC.

user61389
@jippie me gets a 404

7:04 AM
@jippie Except I am getting a "not found" error. You sure your cat didn't step on the KB?

@CamilStaps How did you manage that? :D

BTW there is an PIC programmer project for Arduino too. The trick with that is that they have to invert the logic levels

user61389

@jippie Yes, what @CamilStaps said

sorry for the + typo

user61389
7:05 AM
@abdullahkahraman don't remember actually, I think I (nearly) shorted a pin. After that, the chip still worked, by the way.

@jippie: I don't think that's an ISP programmer

oh

"Dave programs a PIC 24F chip on his uCalc with the new official AVR Dragon firmware."
I don't know exactly what that means, but it isn't programming an AVR.

Here is the sequel: eevblog.com/2013/04/05/microchip-atmel-collaboration @CamilStaps @angelatlarge

@angelatlarge I think there was something like an April 1st Fool's day joke about programmers..

7:06 AM
@CamilStaps: You are still a go on the ISPIC

@abdullahkahraman hush you foolish boy, don't you have to be in school!?

@jippie It says "Collaboration my arse!" (I am not bothering to launch a video)

@jippie ah, come on! :D

user61389
@angelatlarge what do you mean?

@CamilStaps ISP is the programming protocol you will make your PIC circuit talk (to an AVR). So your project will be called ISPIC, no?

user61389
7:08 AM
@angelatlarge oh so :) yes. Microchip calls it ICSP, hence the confusion

Wow, the they I will make a programmer is going to be the day I will start messing with 32-bit microcontrollers finally, since I will be good enough with 8-bits, then.

user61389
There's no reason to use a 32-bit controller when you have a PIC

@CamilStaps lol

@user2143817: Hello, welcome to EE.SE. Unfortunately, not having any rep on this site you will not be able to talk. But you are welcome to hang out and eavedrop on our boring conversation
@user2143817: I think you need 20 rep to talk.

user61389
@angelatlarge he got 56 at Stack Overflow, isn't that okay to talk here?

7:14 AM
@CamilStaps We will see, if he is going to reply.. :)

@CamilStaps No, she or he needs 20 here. If she or he had over 100 at Stack Overflow they would get the association bonus, and then yes. But as it is, no dice.

user61389
@angelatlarge okay

And let us not assume that eveyone is male around here, not in the least that we can be more encouraging towards women engineers.

@angelatlarge We already have Stacey.. More means that end of the world is coming..

@abdullahkahraman I bet we have other prominent lady engineers outside of Stacey Anne... no?

7:18 AM
@angelatlarge I hope so..

@jippie Can you make that schematic a bit bigger? Hard to see it as it is now.

@angelatlarge I hate CircuitLab schematics.. They are so ugly!

user61389
Hey, the CircuitLab plugin doesn't work here either. Are the users with a dotted border restricted from using it?

@abdullahkahraman They are only ugly when not hacked to scale properly

@angelatlarge Then I hate @jippie :)

7:21 AM
@CamilStaps Someone is obsessed with dotted borders... I think the dotted borders are responsible for the world financial crisis, the Japanese tsunami, and the Boston marathon bombings. That and the lack of lady engineers.

@angelatlarge edit the circuit with your signature and go for the edit-badge.

@jippie Sure, I think that's a service to the community. I suspect I might not get enough people to accept the edit though...

@CamilStaps wasn't the PIC-printf about 5 times slower than the ATmega-printf?

user61389
@angelatlarge seriously, doesn't the dotted border intrigue you? I still haven't found a system for it.

user61389
@jippie let's not talk about that. They probably were, yes... :)

7:23 AM
@CamilStaps No. I really could care less. Really.
Oh. I think the Circuit lab is now broken for me too.

@jippie Why people use printf when they are using an 8-bit micro?

user61389
@angelatlarge you have a dotted border too, haven't you? It's a conspiracy.

No better ways of transmitting RS232?

@angelatlarge isn't angela a girl too!?

@jippie Yeah, I guess so..
@jippie But I was not sure, so gave some universal answers :)

7:25 AM
@angelatlarge i'll accept

user61389
@angelatlarge me too.

@jippie OK, done. Had to use my Windoze machine
@CamilStaps @CamilStaps Actually, in this case @jippie will be fastest: if he accepts, it is good to go. Since he is the author, you know

@abdullahkahraman how many bits do you thnk processors had when printf was first developped?

user61389
@angelatlarge yeah but I'm hunting review badges. So I reviewed it :)

@jippie 3

7:26 AM
@jippie I meant space and speed constraint with that, but seriously what is printf for exactly?

@CamilStaps I thought you might be!
Looks pretty now, don't it?

user61389
@angelatlarge it's too bad @PeterJ is going to beat me at the Steward for first posts :( - electronics.stackexchange.com/review/first-posts/stats

BTW, whitespace doesn't work. I haven't tried the ASCII 255 character though :)

user61389
@angelatlarge why the J, actually?

@CamilStaps because @jippie

user61389
7:29 AM
@angelatlarge ah yes I see

BTW, I got a tenacious badge on SO. I don't understand it. (link is to the [ee.se] badge, BTW)

you could have upvoted the answer while you were there ;o) @angelatlarge

@jippie I didn't read it

user61389
@angelatlarge you have 5 accepted answers with 0 score on it. I'm not sure what that total is though, either all your answers or all your accepted answers.

@jippie I try not to vote on things I don't feel I understand

7:31 AM
@angelatlarge go back, read it, and while you're there upvote and scale down the other image too.

user61389
How did T. get that badge!?

@jippie I'll go and read it now (grumble, rep, grumble, rep)

I made both images about same size, you broke that @angelatlarge

@CamilStaps Is that good? bad? indifferent?
@jippie I don't know how to scale the other one.
@jippie You want to rollback?

in paint.exe

user61389
7:32 AM
@angelatlarge it might mean you're helping users whilst there question is really uninteresting, so that would be good.

good morning @AnindoGhosh

Hi @jippie :-)

@jippie Wow, printf is a biiig overhead!
@AnindoGhosh Hey!

I didn't get to do anything with the MOSFET module and your inputs yesterday. I've just come back from a meeting, maybe I'll revamp the board in a bit and send it to you again.

@jippie You didn't actually answer the question, did you? "Can I run ?"

7:34 AM
@abdullahkahraman printf() is best avoided in resource-limited platforms.
@abdullahkahraman Hi :-)

@AnindoGhosh Thank you, someone understands me :)

@jippie But here's an upvote, you whore
@jippie I didn't notice you upvoting my awesome WiFi answer, did I?

user61389
'I'm not going to upvote you before you upvote everything of me.'?

@CamilStaps Oh... I see... hmmm... right. So it doesn't mean that I am a luzer?
@CamilStaps Not sure what that means.

user61389
7:36 AM
@angelatlarge no, this doesn't ;)

@NickHalden I've actually done the opposite - slept over 6 hours last night.

user61389
@angelatlarge never mind

@jippie Good, I think it is better this way, and it is actually correct.

user61389
@AnindoGhosh sssh, he's working! Good morning :)

@AnindoGhosh I sometimes envy how you read most of the chat history..

7:37 AM
@angelatlarge done now.

@CamilStaps Hahaha

@jippie Maybe you want to point out that it will actually pump more....mmm.... vigorously now.

@angelatlarge I don't know about a wifi answer

@jippie Yeah, exactly. It is good.
@jippie Oh, it is a beauty!

user61389
@angelatlarge why do we need girls on EE when we have such answers?

7:38 AM
@abdullahkahraman Not just on EE chat, but on 3-4 other chats I participate in (not part of SE), as well as all new questions on 5 different SE sites. Every morning, 1 hour - I call it "spinning up the motors".

@AnindoGhosh wow..

A: Cheapest way to add wifi to a project

angelatlargeA very cheap way to add WiFi to a project, is to use a WiFi router as WiFi hardware. The router needs to be not-so-new in order to be cheap, and must support Serial/USB or JTAG ports on board OpenWRT (DD-WRT may work too, but I haven't used DD-WRT for this purpose) See OpenWRT supported hardw...

@CamilStaps We don't. If only such beautiful answers were more popular and had more rep :)

@angelatlarge Why do you think I didn't upvote that?

@angelatlarge Maybe I like the oneliner answer better?

@angelatlarge The bus pirate used to be PIC based and can be used as an AVR programmer.

@abdullahkahraman bye!

user61389
So I'm the only PIC guy again? :(

Actually, I am pretty happy with that answer having 4 rep: it's not the top but it is visible, which is the important thing. Of course there are other questions of this sort that don't have the benefit of being rep farms for me....

7:44 AM
@CamilStaps One is more than enough for those losers..

@angelatlarge Why not? It's been cloned, look up Bus Ninja, by EE.SE's own Toby Jaffey

the other way around I believe

@jippie Correct, judging by the title.

Oh, and by the way, when I come back I want to see my rep a little higher.. It's been 1953 for ages!

Fine, but ask this question to your inner consciences..
@AnindoGhosh Thanks!

@angelatlarge just add 100 free-beer questions. You get 2 points for each accept.

7:48 AM
@abdullahkahraman My inner conscience says: "whatever"

user61389
That's by the way very much similar to how I got my mortarboard, I asked like 10 questions that day.

Downvoting because link-only answers are strongly discouraged: At least try and summarize what the link provides as information, or, in this case, just nominate the question for closing, on the basis that it is a duplicate, if you so feel. — Anindo Ghosh 11 secs ago

@AnindoGhosh I did, that cost me a 1 rep!
Oh, I have to go..

user61389
7:51 AM
@abdullahkahraman ah, it will be removed hopefully. Bye again :)

@AnindoGhosh Ah, that was hard to parse. I parsed it as "To downvote due to ... is descouraged", not "I did downvote this, here's the reason: "

You get the rep back when the person either deletes their answer (which is bound to happen if he hits a negative), or when they edit it, and you can un-downvote it - whether you then upvote it or not.

My moral code prohibits me from downvoting a "competing" answer that isn't wrong"

@angelatlarge Sorry, fixed. I was busy on a different chat at the same time, someone I know has managed to break their 500 mm lens, I was offering him mine on loan for a shoot.

But there is a duplication issue. How is that to be solved?

7:54 AM
@angelatlarge I was very specific about why I downvoted, and that reason makes it clear - the answer is unacceptable.
@angelatlarge They can choose to mark for closure of the question as a duplicate. I personally don't see it as an "exact duplicate", which is the specific term in the duplicate-close dialog.

@AnindoGhosh I am just talking about the fact that I also offered an answer on that question. Not saying you shouldn't downvote, not at all.

BRB phonecall.

@AnindoGhosh Should I repost my router answer in the bridge/SPI question? That seems kinda stoopid.

@AnindoGhosh back already, forgot to have breakfast (again)

8:03 AM
@jippie haha

user61389
@AnindoGhosh have you already considered answering the LED driving question?

@CamilStaps Yes, I'll write it up, today I am less overloaded than the last couple of days. I had a prototype client review this morning, that's gone well.

user61389
@AnindoGhosh okay, don't hurry, I'll wait for it! That's nice, what do you do for a living?

@CamilStaps Several different things. Check AnindoGhosh.com for an idea on one of them: Professional photographer. Also, SmartPhoneGizmos facilitates end-client to developer / electronics designer liaison, putting people together and taking care of the project management and delivery operations.
Finally, for those smartphone related or industrial instrumentation projects we can't get an outsource resource for (i.e. typically hardware), we design prototypes and then once the client approves, we get them built by outsource partners.
My electronics skills are primarily in being able to (a) strategize a simpler way to solve a problem, the lower tech the better, and (b) design stuff very defensively, a much needed skill for industrial / factory hardware. So I'm usually the "Throw your problem at him" guy, with the client or their regular partners then taking my idea and running with it.

user61389
@AnindoGhosh that's a nice website you got! Also sounds like an interesting and fun job ;)

Q: how to sample a voltage with sampling interval 10sec using arduino

UTPI am new to arduino. I want to sample an analog voltage with sampling interval 10 sec (precision of sampling interval is important). How can I done this using arduino? How can I get accurate sampling interval?

@angelatlarge off what?

8:33 AM
@CamilStaps You have to keep that to chat.

@angelatlarge max ADC frequency for a mega is about 80kHz

@jippie 10 seconds should be doable then :)

@jippie WTF you were supposed to be gone!

user61389
@angelatlarge yes indeed

oh seconds, I read usec
attachTimer();

8:35 AM
@angelatlarge I'd be using timers, not delays.

@AnindoGhosh Never mind, I am washing my hands off that. I was fishing for an excuse to write the OPs code for them, but it's going to be a quagmire for little to no rep. See tumbleweed badge, above.

@angelatlarge it is SO-rep. not interested ;o)

@AnindoGhosh That's harder to teach to a very new person lacking in research skills.

@CamilStaps That edit made the message a TMI situation.

@AnindoGhosh +1 +1 +1

Arduinoobs is a nice term, we should have a tag for that.

8:49 AM
@CamilStaps It's a term I use often enough, google it :-)

user61389
@AnindoGhosh hahaha nice :)

@CamilStaps We do. It is a tag synonym of [arduino]

user61389
@angelatlarge haha :) to be pedantic (again), isn't [tag:arduino] what you're looking for?

@CamilStaps Wasn't there a way to have tag boxes in chat? @Kortuk showed me how once, but I forgot

user61389
@angelatlarge there was, it's [tag:arduino] :P

8:51 AM
Ah, yes.

user61389
That must be the first time I actually used that tag.

@CamilStaps It's rep factory, I'll tell you.
@AnindoGhosh That's the first time I saw you sorta kinda maybe hint at losing patience.

@CamilStaps You were so humorless about Kaz's "Ohm-made" pun. I thought it was geek brilliance. Boring chap, you!

user61389
@angelatlarge I think my moral code is stronger than my rep code here

user61389
@AnindoGhosh I liked it too, but I think puns like that should be comments, shouldn't they?

8:52 AM
@angelatlarge It's rare that I am intolerant, yes. Must be that day of year again. I may be very argumentative, but rarely exasperated.
@CamilStaps I would have agreed with you, except there is no way I know of, to add an image to a comment. Please feel free to correct me, as many of my comments are just short of answers, and could do with images.

Speaking of close votes I am supposed to be able to view them... not sure how to do that.

user61389
@AnindoGhosh there isn't AFAIK, except adding a link of course. I've seen a lot comments of you that could've been answers, yes..

Oh, it is only on your OWN questions

That's grist for the anti-Arduinoob mill :-)

user61389
8:54 AM
@angelatlarge that's only on your own questions

@CamilStaps yeah...

user61389
@angelatlarge Try this :)

@CamilStaps Yeah, thanks. That was helpful.

user61389
@angelatlarge glad to be of help

@CamilStaps You and ardakshalkar share the "most helpful" prize today.

@angelatlarge speaking of that question, did you see my answer yet? :D
