@Duga The ducks win again!

Just the Mug @Simon. Duck's been a bit busy. =/
Wait wait, Mug is at it tonight as well! ;)

@RubberDuck is the PR handled? It shows as still pending/open on the repo..
Do I need to do anything? I'm so clueless!! :)
00:42
Ohh. Yeah. I forgot about it.
The file needs to be checked out from the pull request.
Need to do it from the command line. All those changes to the solution makes me too nervous to just click the button.
01:09
Can you handle it? I'm pretty sure I'll do it wrong...
No rush though, whenever you can :)
01:24
Yeah. I can do it. Just not sure when.
01:46
I know why there's so many false positives with assignment/non-assignment.
and that one's going to be a bitch and a half
work in progress:
        private bool _skipIdentifier;
        public override void EnterLetStmt(VBAParser.LetStmtContext context)
        {
            // we're handling involved identifiers here.
            _skipIdentifier = true;

            VBAParser.AmbiguousIdentifierContext assignmentTarget;

            var leftSide = context.implicitCallStmt_InStmt();

            // simple cases first:
            var procedureOrArrayCall = leftSide.iCS_S_ProcedureOrArrayCall();
            if (procedureOrArrayCall != null)
I'm going to end up extracting methods from this, to return the assignmentTarget context
but the bottom line is, this:
        private bool IsAssignmentContext(RuleContext context)
        {
            var parent = context.Parent;
            return parent.Parent.Parent is VBAParser.SetStmtContext // object reference assignment
                   || parent.Parent.Parent is VBAParser.LetStmtContext // value assignment
                   || parent is VBAParser.ForNextStmtContext // treat For loop as an assignment
                // todo: verify that we're not missing anything here (likely)
                ;
        }
...is way over-simplifying it. it's only handling the "simple case" like a = b
02:23
getting there... now I only need to figure out a way to reorganize the code so that I can recurse for this part:
            var membersCall = leftSide.iCS_S_MembersCall();
            if (membersCall != null)
            {
                // fun ensues

            }
var members = membersCall.iCS_S_MemberCall(); // last one is the assignment target... maybe.
ugh. why why WHY does VBA allow such things?! bar.DoSomething().GetValue().Something!foobar.Fizz().Buzz = 42
the good news is that the code for LetStmtContext will be 100% reusable for SetStmtContext. yay!

1 hour later…
03:43
ok I'm starting to have a bit of a clue about the false positives...
Rubberduck Code Inspections - 07/04/2015 11:43:09 PM
71 issues found.
Warning: Function 'CompareTo' returns no value - Foundation.IComparable, line 3
Warning: Function 'StringFormat' returns no value - Foundation.StringHelpers, line 20
Warning: Function 'IView_SelectedItem' returns no value - Foundation.SimpleView, line 220
Warning: Function 'IView_Model' returns no value - Foundation.SimpleView, line 212
Warning: Function 'IPresenter_View' returns no value - Foundation.CustomerGroupsPresenter, line 226
IComparable isn't implemented anywhere, so Rubberduck has no way of telling CompareTo should be ignored as an interface method - that one's fine.
StringFormat does return a value, but it seems this line is breaking the parser:
regex.pattern = "{({{)*(\w+)(,-?\d+)?(:[^}]+)?}(}})*"
...which is a problem, but not the problem I'm after right now
NewItem not returning anything is an actual code issue - embarassing, but useful here.
and then EVERY SINGLE ONE of the other inspection results are interface implementation methods. some aren't implemented and actually don't return a value, but most are implemented and do return a value.
I have a lead
that's not a bug in the tree listener, it's a bug in the freakin' inspection!
Rubberduck Code Inspections - 07/04/2015 11:58:04 PM
3 issues found.
Warning: Function 'CompareTo' returns no value - Foundation.IComparable, line 3
Warning: Function 'StringFormat' returns no value - Foundation.StringHelpers, line 20
Warning: Function 'NewItem' returns no value - Foundation.RepsRepository, line 6
bingo
copy-pasted crap code from the disabled/deferred ProcedureNotUsedInspection though
but damn this is soothing
hmm the regex isn't breaking the parser, Code Explorer is showing both members here
Public Sub DoSomething()
    Dim pattern As String
    pattern = "{({{)*(\w+)(,-?\d+)?(:[^}]+)?}(}})*"
    DoSomethingElse
End Sub

Public Sub DoSomethingElse()

End Sub
oh wait, ...now the NonReturningFunctionInspection has ...false negatives!

Q: Excel VBA - Script Ineffective with large data files

PootyTootI developed a script for the company I work for in order to extract data from SAP (CJ74) and analyze the data. One particular issue I am finding is that for any data sets which have over 1000 lines, it struggles to execute the section of code below, therefore I am searching for answers. This ...

09:09
Hmm... An issue with saving the config?? Damn it.

2 hours later…
11:37
@RubberDuck Not really. It's a tiny little glitch to scare you this morning :)
Assignment false positives are gone!
I'll sexify the settings dialog after I upgrade the extract method refactoring, and that issue will just vaporize ;)
11:52
@Mat'sMug lol.. I've had enough of a scare this morning. My dog got loose.
So, what's wrong with the config saving?
12:05
Well the issue is real, it's just a little "LostFocus" thing. Config changes save fine, only the last change won't be picked up as a change if the dropdown still has focus... but that only because we x-out of the dialog to save
Ohhhh. Shit. I never thought of that.
> Who let the dogs out!
12:28
LOL. Not funny....
Got him back?
Yeah. We got him back.
It's been raining for days, so the big lug was able to just pull his stake out of the ground.
Oh wow.. glad you got him back home!
12:46
Yeah. Me too. The wife would have killed me.

> An un-handled error is raised when opening the VBE of a shared macro enabled workbook or trying to use Rubberduck's features. Shared workbooks cannot have their VBA code read or written, which is causing the error. For the same reason we don't need Rubberduck to work in a shared workbook. However, this case should be handled more gracefully than the scary .NET error. Either just exit silently or raise a "You can't use Rubberduck in a shared workbook error". Steps to reproduce with...
Rubberduck installed: 1. Create a Workbook 1. Add a Code Module to the VB Project 1. Save as Macro Enabled Workbook (or binary) 1. Share Workbook 1. Close and re-open workbook 1. Open VBE. 1. Receive Unhandled Error Can't Perform operation since the project is protected. Details are at the bottom. 2. Opening TODO items or Code Inspections will re-raise the error. ``` See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box....

> If I'm reading the stack trace right, you have Version 1.2 or 1.21 installed.
I believe this issue was corrected in 1.22

https://github.com/retailcoder/Rubberduck/releases/tag/v1.22
13:56
^^ good catch
@RubberDuck I checked the issues to see if that was already handled.
Aha
need an update
@cheezsteak can you confirm the issue is still present in the 1.22 release?
@ticker no title-of-the-year prize for you with that one
> Opening the Options dialog and immediately closing it without making changes prompts that "Changes to setting will take affect next time the application is started." This implies to the user that something has been changed, better behavior would be to only prompt if any settings were altered.

Also, "affect" should be "effect", but this doesn't warrant an issue by itself.
@Mat'sMug on it
14:14
ok. that dialog is getting its facelift tonight. extract method enhancement will wait.
@cheezsteak I take it as a "it works!" :)
@ducky Doing homework programming assignments I see... Kind of sucks you have to go through all the basics that you already know instead of getting to the "fun stuff"
(I use the term "basics" pretty loosely because I'm still learning the basics; spent too much time with SQL for my own good)
> Just so the changes are documented... - [ ] add top and bottom panels, to match design of other (more recent) dialogs - [ ] add an instructions label to top panel, changing with the selected settings group - [ ] add "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons in the bottom panel; only save changes when "Ok" is clicked (see #366, will also fix #364) - [ ] add ducky icon - [ ] add icons for the nodes in the tree view - [ ] make the grid views less eye-irritant if possible (ugh I'd want this dialog made with...
WPF!)
14:24
@RubberDuck You are right, I haven't :)
@SimonAndréForsberg Duga's been having hiccups lately
or she's moody and only posts what she feels like...
wouldn't surprise me if it's the memory issue
> If the Microsoft provided MouseWheelFix add-in (support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/837910) is installed, the Code Inspections and ToDo Explorer will scroll simultaneously with the VBE code window when the mouse wheel is used and the Rubberduck window doesn't have focus. This may be an issue with the MouseWheelFix add-in, but the Rubberduck windows should really be eating the event. Steps to replicate (Office 2010): - Download and install the MouseWheelFix add-in. - Click inside the VBE...
code window. - Move the mouse cursor over a Code Inspections or ToDo Explorer window with a scroll bar present, but do not click to give the window focus. - Scroll with the mouse wheel.
@Mat'sMug yup.
@SimonAndréForsberg she's doing it again :)
14:38
I'm going through the Code Inspections, and I've got lots of can be passed by value and passed ByRef implicitly info messages.
@Mat'sMug on the github repo's webhook settings, what response codes/statuses do you get for the payload messages?
2 questions: 1) is ByValue more efficient than ByRef?
2) if so, can they be sorted in the listing so the by value messages always come up before the implicitly messages so fixing the first will "fix" both?
I do understand the difference between the two, I'm just wondering if explicitly passing by value would be better than by ref?
@FreeMan good question. the idea behind that can be passed by value is that if a parameter isn't assigned, then it doesn't need to be passed by reference. there was no performance consideration in the thought process that lead to this...
perhaps objects passed by reference shouldn't trigger that inspection?
@Mat'sMug I would think that ByRef is better performance wise, since you (or the computer, as it were) wouldn't have to allocate memory then copy the value into it, then pass the pointer to the new memory location.
> Note: the scrollwheel fix is specifically for the VB6 IDE
14:42
@FreeMan you're right - then perhaps the best thing to do is to shut off that inspection when performance is desired?
I would agree on objects, that could be quite spendy copying an entire object.
(and update the wiki)
ooh, that would be a nifty switch to set in the options! Inspect for maximum performance.
^^
totally
actually... there's nothing stopping us from adding a Performance inspection "type"
well, nothing but writing it, that is.
14:44
and adding an inspection that checks for object parameters passed ByVal.
trivial
keep in mind that most code inspections are mere suggestions, whatever their "severity" level is
now, passed ByRef implicitly is better off explicitly ByRef though ;)
@Mat'sMug True, but there's some level of trust and authority that comes with making those suggestions, so some consideration has to be made to the impact making the suggested change will have.
absolutely
it's just that, like ReSharper hints, one might eventually contradict another
@Mat'sMug Is that simply for documentation purposes, or is there any actual compiler implications?
just for readability IMO
and I keep telling people to use explicit modifiers all the time, because VB6/VBA has them backwards vs. every other language out there, so it's easily confusing when you're context-switching between VB.NET/C#/Java and VBA
;)
I can see that being an issue.
14:54
@sᴉɔuɐɹɥԀ Yeah.. hopefully it gets better.
@FreeMan don't worry... me too.
oh, and the workbook I'm using for testing stuff is some of the best VBA code I've ever written... and it has over 270 issues on my build
> @retailcoder we could catch it and eat it in the NativeWindows code. There are other hacks in there that make the dockable windows work properly. I'm just wondering how it would work if the add-in isn't installed. We need to verify that any fix doesn't affect users without the add-in.
It would also be nifty if the Code Inspections list were sortable by clicking a column header. It would make it easier to knock out all the ByRef implicitly errors.
@FreeMan I want that!
Pretty sure there's an open issue for .... that.
15:01
16 secs ago, by Mat's Mug
and we have it scheduled for 1.3...
cool!
there's a lot scheduled for 1.3 actually... I think we'll have to postpone some to 1.4 if we want to ship out the cool stuff early
(did I say source control integration and refactor/rename?)
according to our milestones page, 1.3 is 23% completed
51 issues opened
damn
oh I want #340 for 1.3
and it would be dumb not to include #333
I mean, most of the hard work is done already, we just need to make a UI for it!
btw..... I would have liked to have reached through the phone and smacked the lady that sneered a when I said "free and open source"...
Just needed to vent that.
feels better? lol
@RubberDuck should "42" in foo = GetSomeValue(42) count as a usage of whatever the parameter is in the GetSomeValue function?
I think it's going to have to, in order to be able to implement the change signature refactoring
@FreeMan thoughts? ^^
wouldn't be much of a performance hit, we're already walking arguments to pick up named parameters anyway...
@Mat'sMug It would be an assignment into the parm, so I would think so.
@Mat'sMug Was continuing to thing about this one... When sorting by the 'Issue' column, a simple text sort won't be of much value, since:
>Parameter 'c' can be passed by value
>Parameter 'c' is passed ByRef implicitly
>Parameter 'd' can be pased by value
>parameter 'd' is passed ByRef implicitly
15:14
it would also help me get rid of the false positive I'm getting for "variable 'description' is never assigned" when it's actually passed ByRef to a function that assigns it via its outDescription parameter...
@FreeMan good point.
isn't of much added value - it's really pretty much that way anyway, since they seem to be sorted by line number.
they are
by module and line IIRC
They would really need to be sorted by 'type' of "Can be passed by value", "is passed ByRef implicitly"
@Mat'sMug appears to be so.
@FreeMan looks like just adding a column for the inspection type and making the grid user-sortable would fix it then :)
@Mat'sMug If 42 was a variable, yes. But as it is, how is it a usage? I don't understand.
15:17
@RubberDuck say you right-click on parameter foo and say "Find all usages" - would you want to see what values you're passing to it? currently you'd only get the named parameter calls
to Yoda speak, rewording the message, you could do "Passed by value, parameter 'x' can be"
2
@FreeMan these are going to eventually be localized, too
we'll make a sw-YO culture just for that when we're out of things to implement :)
wait, I just realized Yoda spoke in Reverse Polish Notation!
@Mat'sMug Oh. No. I would only want to see uses within the local routine.
really?
15:19
But I do see what you're getting at.
Yeah. Because if I wanted to see the use of the routine, I'd search for its usage.
now picture you have foo and bar like so: Function DoSomething(ByVal foo As Integer, ByVal bar As Integer) and you want to make it DoSomething(ByVal bar As Integer, ByVal foo As Integer).
you need to know, at every call site, what value is passed into which parameter
2 other things I'm noticing as I'm having RD insert all the 'ByRef's:
it's re-parsing every time
1) if I double click a line item, it then takes 2 "Fix" clicks to actually get it to take action.
2) some things, like adding in the "ByRef" could probably skip the full code refresh. This is sloooow....
double-click will give the focus to the code pane, that's by design
actually it's not re-parsing - it's re-running the inspections though. there's definitely room for improvement there
15:23
@Mat'sMug I understand. Once I do that, I have to click the "fix" button twice to get it to actually fix it. If I single click the issue line, it takes only one click on the "fix" button to make the change.
in 1.1 there was a Handled flag on inspection results. maybe it's time to reinstate it?
first click will only refocus the toolwindow. it's probably fixable...
I can see value in that - greys out the listing row, or displays a check mark so you know which ones you've done.
@Mat'sMug Ah, yes, I see that now. I hadn't noticed. That's exactly what it is.
if the window is docked, it's only 1 click.
problem is that if you have a procedure that uses line continuations in its signature, applying a quickfix will invalidate all the token positions
not a bug, a feature! :D
@FreeMan oh, I always have it docked!
BTW, right-click the VBE toolbar
there's a "Code Inspections" toolbar, too - a lightweight version of the toolwindow
2
I keep forgetting about that feature
(ducky too)
it might have other issues
15:27
@Mat'sMug Sweet!
:)
I think @RubberDuck sync'd it with the inspection results from the toolwindow, so the two should report the same issues and refresh together... I think
yeah it does.
^^ the counts look right...
hmm its buttons remain disabled until you refresh it though
this used to be a big copy+paste mess :)
well done, @ducky!
Hrm, may have found a bug?
Very possible!
15:36
It's claiming 'Function "PC" returns no value', yet the last line of the function is pc = value
Ah, I've flummoxed it. Value is a parm that is passed in. Guess I just need to make it a procedure and pass ByRef (Explicitly!)
but, still, I'm not sure that's the best way to report the issue...
That one has tons of false positives, fixed them just yesterday
Everything assignment-related is flaky in 1.2x
@Mat'sMug Thanks! I'm proud of what I accomplished there.
@Mat'sMug sigh... the whiney new guy is a day late...
lol
(needs a major refactoring though, but works!)
eesh.. I've never learned C#++♭.net anything, but I do recognize the syntax...
Interesting, the Code Inspection toolbar does seem to have errors sorted by 'type'. I'm going through all the 'could be passed by value' errors, and haven't seen a single 'ByRef implicit' one in a while, even though there are plenty of opportunities.
15:52
I think only the grid re-sorts them - the toolbar would have them [un]sorted by whatever order the inspections run (they're running asynchronously, and discovered via reflection, so the order they run in is unreliable)
16:02
discovering new implemented inspections with reflection means that whatever class implements IInspection will be automagically picked up as such; it makes development much easier :)
I sooo was abusing reflection today...
Console.WriteLine(person.GetType().Name);

>> Student
C# class?
16:25
Yeah. I way over engineered the first assignment.
just to show the professor that the student isn't going to learn anything in this course ;)
Still not even remotely happy with the TelephoneNumber class.
I hope I do though!
well you might ;)
Its just hard not to feel like I'd learn more working on RD when we're covering data types and loops right now.
Heh... When I started helping with RD I didn't know C# at all.
@RubberDuck look how far along you've come!
16:30
I can linq!
Yes. Linq is a verb now.
Omg.... I just found out that we're arguing over source control when they're installing 2013 Ultimate on our machines.
I've been stressing about nothing! lol
I officially don't care what IT wants now.
IT wants us to use this bs software from 1985 and have them push our code into production.
Seriously, the only people who have anything nice to say about this VCS are the people selling it.
Anyway, I just found out that they upgraded our one dev to 2013 and that I'll be getting 2013 when they install it.
Git is built in.
I seriously no longer care what IT wants. We're using Git.
What kind of dept are you in @RubberDuck?
@cheezsteak Support Systems
But we don't fall under IT's umbrella. We're technically part of "the business".
Technically I'm under customer service.
What VCS is it?
16:44
@RubberDuck Yup, that's been my world for the last several years. Got to do an IT job, but since you're not 'one of them' they don't want to trust you with the tools and access...
@cheezsteak PVCS a.k.a. Serena Dimensions
@FreeMan LOL. I don't wan't their crappy antiquated tools and processes.
well, there's that...
16:57
lol... yeah.
I get away with things I just shouldn't tbh.
Anyone have time for a TSQL question?
actually NVM just found my answer
Dang! I was just about to grab my O'Reilly Oracle 8 book...
I ♥ having new users that point out all the bugs!
> @retailcoder you closed this, but what was the result? Status-declined? Just don't want to get confused 6 months down the road..
Okay @Duga. All caught up on recent issues. Back to work.
I needed to find entries that only have one product, in an invoice detail type of table with a composite key, to calculate an average price
SELECT
  AVG(Cont.Equipment_Retail)
FROM STAR_Contracts AS Cont
  INNER JOIN STAR_Products AS Prod
    ON Cont.Contract_Number = Prod.Contract_Number
    AND COUNT(Prod.Contract_Number) = 1
WHERE Prod.Product_ID = '1018'
  AND Prod.Sequence_Number = '001'
GROUP BY Cont.Equipment_Retail;
Should work pretty good methinks
You should try a HAVING clause. Might be more efficient. I'm not sure.
I always think it's a bit weird to have "regular" criteria in a join.
Hmm I didn't think about using HAVING that's worth testing. I always forget that exists
I wonder... do you know if SEDE has a table with a composite key?
No idea buddy.
Ugh stupid phone typo
@RubberDuck can you spot it?
> VBParser.ConstSubStmtContext
??
Something outside of a sub context?
stab in the dark
Ow! My arm!
I need to check to see if the parent ConstStmtContext has more than a single ConstSubStmtContext before I rewrite the statement!
I'm starting to know this grammar pretty well now :)
18:04
Seems like It!
^^ here
Actually... I might not even have to. Why am I rewriting the whole instruction anyway, when it's only the ConstSubStmtContext that's interesting? ....
Hmm.. probably to avoid replacement errors like in Const foo = 42, barfoo = 72... I'll do a regex replace instead of a simple string.Replace, and bug solved.
Wow that code is borked
Seems to be an issue with the Variable 'x' is never assigned logic.
I've not found a single true positive yet.
is this a known issue?
maybe?
18:19
Yeah. Fixed yesterday ;)

@Mat'sMug sigh... the whiney new guy is a day late...
Yesterday was very productive in regardd to assignment false positives :)
:thumbsup: <--- yeah, it won't work, but you get the idea...
when's 1.23 coming? :D
When @ducky finishes his class in 6 to 8 weeks.
will be 1.3
18:27
Might put out another hot fix or two before source control integration happens though.
you'll have to strap me to not push refactor/rename to master...
and all these inspection false positives fixed...
/waits with baited breath
/makes note to brush teeth before going home to wife
@Mat'sMug Do it man.

@RubberDuck you're not going to tell me that twice. watch.
;)
@FreeMan 1-2 weeks, with a new grammar, tons of bug fixes and a new refactoring :)
18:33
woot!
18:48
actually, I might tag that one 1.3-pre.1
19:35
You guys remember me talking about HearthMonitor a while ago?
It was to be used to save and give feedback on games you played in HearthStone
I do intend to push it quite quickly right now, but there's essentially no feedback options right now, it will only save log files of your game and it can show those pretty much
Thoughts?

@sᴉɔuɐɹɥԀ it's valid MySQL syntax, i'm sure ... but MySQL isnt a valid RDBMS
@Mat'sMug ^^
@skiwi what kind of feedback would you want from a log file? (I'm not sure I get what that project does)
@Mat'sMug The log files contains logs of games, and you can extract a player's performance from that, not sure if you are familiar with collectible/trading card games, but lots of things are to be measured
nope
but yeah probably
so you'll want to create various charts and pull other analysis from the data
At some point it could even show some misplays, etc. Show points where you could improve
19:48
try data mining ;)
Yeah... ultimately, but version 1 won't have any of that fancy stuff and I more or less want to promote my website
Might as well try to make some money with donations, etc. while working on it
then I'd say you're ready to release when you have the data ready to export to, say, Excel - so your users can do their own analysis
Is there a reason to not release the initial tool already? The one that only logs
I wonder if I can get users so far to drop off their e-mail to get notified of future updates
perhaps
And I should get my own blog rolling... for real
I'm hoping it's okay to combine programming and games in one blog ;)
19:58
@Mat'sMug @RubberDuck I'm going run out of ideas what to do whit the mocking VBProject. I don't know what else I should try, tried arrayList, tried to mock the extension of LinQ Cast - without success. So finally I went back to 'old' approach and made a fake VBProject class that implements VBProjects interface and this solved it so I can continue testing
BUT
I'm sure It's possible with Moq (however it's first time I use it) so if you have any idea let me know
I'll get back to you for sure
