9:00 PM
@IvenBach you do, all the time.. we just seem to only point out the times you don't ;-)

So, in your world of free healthcare, can I just show up at a clinic at get a frickin' tetanus booster?

lol duh

I have to schedule a 2hr appointment or something just because I've not gone to the doctor in years.
And then I have to schedule a second one to actually get the shot.

here you get a tetanus booster shot whenever you show up to a clinic with any injury involving rusted metal

I'd get that here too.

9:01 PM
~free~

It's just I want to voluntarily get the booster before hand.
And yes, it's free here too.

should be good for 5-10 years

hm. There's an issue, though - IIRC, if you get too many tetanus boosters (or any immunization shots) in too short periods, it can mess you up

My provider covers it for free (I'm on my parents still) because my dad is a pipefitter--most injuries involve rusty metal.

so they have to make sure you didn't have one recent-ish and thus avoiding a malpractice lawsuit.

9:02 PM
@this ah, that explains why they check when the last one was :)

Hehe, that's funny since my parents went anti-vax for a while.
So I'm missing all my last boosters.

@this lol there's none of that BS here

I tried to get a shot for a MMR to complete the immunization requirement. They were all "woah woah, we can't give you that! What if you have one already?"

I don't care about them as much, but I ride horses now and need the tetanus, because horses carry it.

hey it's 404 time not found
405 now

9:05 PM
OK, I'm going to go get myself into the psych ward.
I'm going to memorize the HTTP codes and respond with those.
(403 Forbidden might be a useful one, LOL.)

lol I saw the time and it said 4:04 and ... eh nevermind, I'm weird.

it would make for a good comeback.
A nerdy one at least.
What's time now? Not found

5PM is when it gets interesting!

When I first saw Mat's comment, I thought it was a joke about how I was going so far back to our past by riding horses that time itself walked out the door.

It's time to quit work! sorry, nope, bad gateway
This works only if you either work the morning shift or use 12 hour clock. If you used 24 hour clock, that wouldn't really work, though.

9:11 PM
@IvenBach @MathieuGuindon i could not replicate it drag dropping the modules into a new project

@theVBE-it'srightforme maybe try and decompile the original project?

@this (is listening)
i didnt know that was a thing

need an external tool for anything that's not Access, though

how does one do that
sad

like htis one for example
there might be other similar tools but I've seen that tool recommended before for Excel VBA projects

9:14 PM
is there some setting or some usage pattern that would cause a project to get "corrupted" so to speak like that?

mind you, I've never used it myself.
some older MVPs has claimed that editing code while in break mode can corrupt the project, and they are not without basis.

@theVBE-it'srightforme "decompiler tool" is just a fancypants name for exporting all code files and re-importing them back in

@MathieuGuindon i've done that manually!

Then never mind. :)

9:16 PM
oh i mean, not for this one
for previous ones
that also had issues

Rubberduck > Tools > Export Active Project

FWIW, in Access, it's an actual switch so there's no need for an external tool.

every time you answer my questions you make me think i should be using access lol
@this i am very guilty of this :/

well, edit & continue was the killer feature that made the VBE a rock star

so am I, but that's why one takes backups.
I agree. I don't think you really can get to learn programming without that feature, TBH.
After a while, one starts to see a pattern in where you shouldn't edit inside a break mode.

9:19 PM
i back up quite a bit

A dead giveaway is whenever VBIDE asks to reset the state. In that case, the correct answer is to not.

but then it got to the point where the only recent backups were corrupted lol

because resetting the state usually means your source code and the p-code is most likely out of alignment

like the "this will reset your project, do you want to continue"?

yes
I never consent to this.

9:21 PM
yeah i never ever ever click yes on the dialog box
whistles conspicuously
@MathieuGuindon that was more enjoyable than doing so manually :)
is there a way to import like that as well?

from the Code Explorer
"Sync Project"
which option you choose depends on whether you want your project to mirror the file system (overwrite the current content)

in this case i just want to overwrite no?
okay so i did that and it appears the error is fixed, thank you.

:+1:
FWIW these functionalities exist primarily for source control purposes; with them you can easily work with a git repository, and upload your VBA project to GitHub for the world to see!

im detecting an implicit message there :3

gonna love it how badly f'd up Dropbox is on XP's Chrome.

9:30 PM
Why are you using XP? nevermind, not gonna ask :)

the client finally decided it was time to upgrade their Office 97....

IKR?

what is the oldest office you wouldnt yikes at?

9:30 PM
2010
but even so, the clock is winding down on it

breathes sigh of relief
like another year or two?

thing is, despite all the new shtuff, Excel 2010 is still the best, most stable Excel version there ever was

I can sympathize with those sticking with 2003, since 2007 was horrid
but 97? c'mon.....

2007 : 2010 :: Vista : Win7 ?

9:32 PM
pretty much, yeah

sticking to 97 is ...I can't see any reasons. the file format is 97-2003 ffs - go with 2003!

^

nostalgia is really the only reason
97 was very nice for what it was
imo

you sure about that? I think it's more becuase they're cheapskates

CLIPPY!!

9:33 PM
@theVBE-it'srightforme This episode of Rubber-duck-debugging brought to you by the ducks at Rubberduck-vba.

@this aside from that of course
@MathieuGuindon <3
nah i just mean it felt stable and like a nice setting to work, but maybe more so word than excel
@MathieuGuindon sounds like no reason to upgrade then :)

I was told that 2000 and 2002 was a big mess, so that's why many people sticked to 97 until 2003 came out
2003 was pretty stable so for that reason, I don't see a reason to keep sticking to 97 if you can have 2003.
Mind you, those statements are applicable only ~10 years ago

@theVBE-it'srightforme xlookup and dynamic arrays are worth a serious look though.
but I personally don't believe O365 and the whole Sharepoint/cloud based worksheeting is ever going to pick up. Or kill VBA.

@MathieuGuindon there is vba for that ;)
yeah they probably are worth it but i would have to understand their actual value first
@IvenBach as always

@theVBE-it'srightforme how to you make a simple formula that gets you the Nth lookup result /match?

9:38 PM
it occurs to me that 2010 is now the new 97, though.

A: by crying in a corner and wishing for O365 and xlookup and dynamic arrays
alternatively, by leveraging obscure incantations and worksheet wizardry

@MathieuGuindon hey that sounds more fun
actually i just read about xlookup and legitimately did not get what it did

@MathieuGuindon Why not write VBA?
;-)

@this it is, yes

of course you could write VBA... but the native functions are TONS better
@theVBE-it'srightforme the key difference is that it returns a Range - and that changes everything :)

9:42 PM
a bit of a moot point if the native function doesn't exist

a range instead of a single cell?
i never use vlookup because
i didnt get the purpose of it until i started using vba and then vba was just easier

take Match instead
Match returns an index in an array
XMatch returns a Range
(like xlookup)

@this sheldon comics where the lib arts degree recipients are being told "We're sorry for letting you do this." Do you know when that was? Need to show it to a co-worker.

Bill Jelen's got a bunch of posts about it on MrExcel.com

9:44 PM
i love the headline

okay i see the value of xlookup
i think

@MathieuGuindon Nice! You're officially a grossly underpaid peon author!

@MathieuGuindon :squee: It's got our beloved Mug on the cover!

it doesnt seem like it would be overly difficult to do with vba?

9:47 PM
@IvenBach =)

can a VBA function return a range, though?

of course!

Ok. I was not sure if it had to be a scalar value to be available for worksheet's use.

i guess i have to admit im not 100% sure what is meant by range

9:49 PM
a Range is a class in the Excel object model
one you should probably be pretty familiar with :)

never used it :0

you never accessed a cell in Excel?

oh lol i was joking, im bad with emojis sometimes

Gonna love that .Cells returns a Range

9:50 PM
that is so confusing
to a beginner

Excel OM is.... quaint.
Not as quaint as say, Word but still.

haha that's nothing! wait until Rubberduck tells you that Cells has no parameters!

^

hereyago
and Columns too

9:51 PM
also how are you doing inline code here

backticks

they dont work
wtffff
they were not working yesterday

multiline messages can't be formatted

but they can be
"fixed font"

9:52 PM
Remember, we only have 40 41 different MD variants!

@MathieuGuindon Mug, Mike Girvin, Mug, Bill Jelen, JKP, Peltier, Ken Puls, Oz are the ones I can list by name. A couple others I know from their picture. Who are the others?

like a code block
also yeah to what you were saying i see that

@IvenBach there's 2 mugs?

3 if you count the ping

quick get his triplets in here! Need to get them ducking the rubberduck!

9:53 PM
when you type sheet.Columns the brackets are there

Ctrl+i

I've given up on proper wording. Back to grunting and pointing for me.

lol
@theVBE-it'srightforme and the parameter quick-info is not for a member called "Columns"
but one named _Default
it's hidden
and that's the guy taking your args!

through the Columns member?
lol that is
uh
fun

> All your args are belong to him.

9:55 PM
no, Columns just returns a Range, and then the args are passed to Range.[_Default]
ditto with Cells

that is so confusing

though also clarifying
i never understood why .Columns took two arguments

remember Excel was written in the 80's

but now i do
its the same object model as it was then?

9:56 PM
The same goes for .Rows.

@IvenBach sorry I don't know where it is.

@this His site needs a search feature.

@theVBE-it'srightforme nah, but the 80's were... snowy

Excel was a thing in 80s?

9:58 PM
I thought it started in early 90s?

is that implying what i think?

I think some of us were cramming crayons up our nose in the late 80s.
Not even thinking about Excel.

^

speak for yourself, i only used colored pencils

@this Excel 1.0 launched Sept.30, 1985

9:59 PM
yeah, i just saw that.

^^^ :+1:

so it's even older than I thought

I wonder how much of the original code is still in there

> // this is a dirty hack just to get this out for now. Will clean up later

10:00 PM
It's funny, though, that Excel released on Macintosh first before on PC-DOS.

I'm guessing there's comments like that still in there.
^^ Blows my mind.

> Also, an easter egg in Excel 4.0 reveals a hidden animation of a dancing set of numbers 1 through 3, representing Lotus 1-2-3, which was then crushed by an Excel logo.
Oof

I'm guessing they have less of those sorts of easter eggs now.

they removed it all after a version
because of politics
soemthing to do with "Trusted computing" mandate they were involved with
basically you can't ship a program that doesn't do what it say on the tin, and easter eggs is such thing, so they nixed it all.

What about an image of Mug stealing MZTools' lunch money? Is that fair game?

10:15 PM
Looking at WP's plans, I think I could use some of that lunch money

Upgrading to remove the ads?

wanna, but will require negotiations

@MathieuGuindon Send me an e-mail. I might be able to assist with dead mom's pennies.

I.. am not going to do that!
keep that money safe!
plus there's always the option of having a PayPal button

Depending on how much it really is, I might be volunteering as well, but not with a dear deceased person's money.

10:30 PM
Don't worry. Despite the contrary appearances I'm not as dumb as I seem. At least I hope not.
The vast majority of it is in an IRA. I can't access it without severe penalties. Plus I'd rather leave it and pretend its not there allowing for it to grow.
@MathieuGuindon sent you an email.

it's not crazy expensive, just... bad timing now, I guess. But I think if we're going to bust 100K views in 2020, ads need to go down.
@IvenBach saw, thanks! will reply later, gotta run now!

An #IndustryDisruptor can't run off free versions forever. Must keep up the appearance of professionalism.

Q: Utilize loop or other efficient way to find string and copy offset columns to certain cells

victorI am trying to find certain strings in MasterSheet and copy offset columns (3 columns) values in the specific columns in receiver sheet. So far i have this code doing exactly what i want to do Sub FindString() Dim MasterSheet As Workbook 'Master sheet where data is coming from Dim WSLHD As ...

Git question.
When doing merge conflict resolution all the prior commits are still there. It's just the merge resolution commit that actually allows the two branches to merge back together?
Rephrasing my question: All commits leading up to the merge commit are the sequential edits?

Yes

I ask since I am testing conflict resolutions. I'm confused that a merge I did first is after the last merge I did.

Huh?

reviewing git log has it in non-merge order.

10:57 PM
You merged in two different branches?

Yes. 3 different branches.

Hm, I do not really know what the git merge algorithm does in that case.
The recursive merge might actually deem the history to be more sane if the first merge happens later.

42cae9086f8ee2f9e94a55c36f2e1908926a5be4 (HEAD -> TestingMerge) Merge remote-tracking branch 'origin/BinarySearchColumnWidth' into TestingMerge
934e289be27ace0a197a1b9bf9d44ecaaf65dc83 Merge remote-tracking branch 'origin/IntegrationTests' into TestingMerge

3b36b464fd8dd9652fe443d73513b95051ad5353 (origin/UnhideFootingDesignerInsideOfMatchmaker) Expose implicit footing design
Each branch started from origin/next. I created a branch BinarySearchColumnWidth for what I needed. Another branch IntegrationTests for my best-as-I-presently-understand integration tests. And a third for UnhideFootingDesignerInsideOfMatchmaker which corrected a member invocation to be explicitly visible instead of implicitly hidden.

I have to say that I am no export on that matter and, anyway, I cannot make credible remarks since I have been to the chrismas market and had a bit too much Glühwein.

Merging UnhideFootingDesignerInsideOfMatchmaker I'd expect all of its changes to be immediately before the commit. And that's what I see.
@M.Doerner No worry. I'm kinda rubberduck-debugging out loud with myself atm. If I'm blatantly wrong please correct me.

11:07 PM
@MathieuGuindon "By 20 twenty two Excel Mvps"
is it intentional that you have three different numbers there?
20, 22 and 24

After that I've merged the IntegrationTests branch. The commits for that branch are shown before the merge I just did.

I can't see what you're doing there, because there is no graph..

How do I get a graph from log?

--graph

Q: Populates Data from one Workbook to Another

Zack EAnother code clean up I am working on. I have been breaking up my code based on things I have learned here on CR. The code below all works and functions as expected, but I know it can be streamlined more and would like to see how this can be accomplished. The code below was combined into one c...

11:11 PM
@Vogel612 Do you want the textual output or an image of the output?

text should work fine

$ git log --graph --pretty=oneline
*   42cae9086f8ee2f9e94a55c36f2e1908926a5be4 (HEAD -> TestingMerge) Merge remote-tracking branch 'origin/BinarySearchColumnWidth' into TestingMerge
|\
| * c598f681b76f7cf3ed15f2e68f1cd7e718c4bc36 (origin/BinarySearchColumnWidth) Add BinarySearchColumnWidth functionality
* |   934e289be27ace0a197a1b9bf9d44ecaaf65dc83 Merge remote-tracking branch 'origin/IntegrationTests' into TestingMerge
|\ \
| * | e1111b1a66c49f897862184772483d0a572cf14e (origin/IntegrationTests) Renameand update converter
The --graph visibly places the merge commit immediately after the commits on that branch. The non-graph output doesn't.

so you expected the IntegrationTests to be after the BinarySerachColumnWidth merge?

@Vogel612 IM IN UR MVP RENEWALS MESSIN UP YR COUNTS! =)
Other than that, no idea what happened

I first merged UnhideFootingDesignerInsideOfMatchmaker followed by IntegrationTests and lastly BinarySearchColumnWidth.

11:21 PM
that's what it looks like..
latest is on top

Yep. That is what git log --graph --pretty=oneline shows.
However git log --pretty=oneline doesn't show that order.
The ordering is different. Why??

topological vs date

Can you breadcrumb me through the differences?
Topological refers to when the merge was actually performed?

no. topological just means that a commit can only show up when all of it's preceding commits have been shown

I guess that's what I was expecting to see from git.
What is date then? Just when the commits occurred?

11:27 PM
yeap
and date ordering ignores the branch the commits were on
topological sort tries to keep commits from the same branch together
note that the merge order is the same in both histories
both are legit "linearizations" for lack of a better term
(@this might rip my head off for this misuse of the term)

I think both are simply topologically sorted, right?

yes and no

I mean in the sense of, edges always point up.

@Vogel612 Thanks for this clarification. Was concerned for a little bit.

yea, in that sense both are topologically sorted
^^ relevant doc section
@M.Doerner also edges always point "down" in your terminal in git
because the edge points to the preceding commit

11:35 PM
Oh, ok. In my picture they pointed to the next commit.

that would require rewriting the parent

Edges? Points?

graph theory underpinnings

I've read about Edges Nodes. Nodes=Points?

no
"point" just like in pointer
edges can be directed
so the following three graphs are different:
a --> b
a <-- b
a <-> b
note that the last one is just a shorthand for:
  _
 / >
a<-b
bleh... ascii graphs suck
graphs are made of edges and nodes (or vertices)

11:40 PM
One nice thing is that as long as there is no cycle, you can always sort a graph topologically, i.e. that all edges point into the same direction, in linear time with respect to the nodes and edges.

When I was going through an algorithms book I had brief flashes of understanding graph theory. Would take a lot more studying to really understand it though.
@Vogel612 TYVM. git log --topo-order --pretty=oneline was what I expected git log --pretty=oneline to display.
Smarter Less-Derpier every day.
Time to go fail me another final.
Thanks again ducks.</iven>
