Oh well, I will just inject the IParseTreeProvider.

@this easy. that's because not enough people know about Rubberduck!

LOL. Not really the question I'm asking.

Irony: just got a WP notification saying "your stats are booming! 47 hourly views (average 4)"

For me, I'll always have a soft spot for VB6 as it was my first proper paid dev job
tbh as a RAD tool is was phenomonally good at leading newbies up a gentle slope. I worry that some of today's stuff is... steeper.
I wonder how I would have got on coming into C# at 7.2... I feel like I'm only where I am because I jumped pretty early (2.0)

It is not that bad; I jumped in at 5.

11:15 PM
VBA & VB6 consistently show up near the top of any "most dreaded languages" lists. Why is that?
@mansellan I jumped in at 3.5 but we weren't allowed to use linq or generics because the team lead couldn't read it
#facepalm

@MathieuGuindon eesh

yeah so pretty much 2.0

heh, wonder how that team lead is doing now if they still haven't grokked those...
BTDT, team lead at a previous gig was utterly clueless

@MathieuGuindon WTAF?! I'm no team lead and I've gotten to where I can understand LINQ and Generics.

@IvenBach its pretty common IME. Office politics etc.

11:29 PM
But... The willingness, nay the necessity to learn better ways.
All developers have that drive.

yep. but not all team leads are developers. some are just, uh, chancers (putting it politely)
if management are not switched on, they can hide for years
</rant>

Chancers? Giving someone given half a chance that they might fit in the position?

i meant they chance their arm at applying for positions they are unsuited for. IME they then bluster a lot and take their team's credit whilst shirking any blame.
maybe I just got unlucky, but seen it multiple times over
protip: don't stay somewhere like that

@mansellan Sorry to hear.

meh, I'm in a much better place now. makes me appreciate it all the more.

11:35 PM
If a dev is good they'll have opportunities. That's what I hear at least.

that's what I've found

11:55 PM
@mansellan I'm inclined to think the same - there are several .NET based "RAD" tools but in practice, they basically just generate code that's largely opaque and does nothing to help with the learning curve. In fact, I'd argue those aren't as useful until you actually know vanilla C# because only then you can use it correctly. But that's entirely a different problem from providing a platform for noobies to learn and expand.

@this yeah I guess I would look to maybe Python for an entry into coding these days
And maybe (holds nose) Java, as it's basically .Net 1.1 ;-)

not familiar w/ python - can you build applications with them?
I've seen plenty of python code, but I can't recall if anyone made an application on top of it?

yeah, its a clean language for learning compsci. not used it in anger but my University uses it for teaching algos
@this not sure

heh, guess that's a yes then!

11:59 PM
web applications, though.
