@Duga ah, crap

@Duga hmm, it's the setup code that's wrong.

ok, with that I think we can release 2.3 by the end of the week.

@Comintern Really interesting. Sorry for a basic question but how does from a base address of 0x0000 [adding] 0 + (4 * 1) + (4 * 3 * 1) give the hexidecimal 0x0010. Binary 16 is hexidecimal 1. I am sure this is very basic stuff but would be interested to know.

0 + 4 + 12 = 16 Dec
16 Dec = 0x10 Hex
On a 32 bit address, that is in fact 0x0010
In a more generic manner, here is how you count with a Dec/Hex conversion

0 -> 0
...
9 -> 9
10 -> A
...
15 -> F
16 -> 10
@QHarr

9:54 AM
@Elcan Thank you. I hadn't fully woken up and was doing binary 16!

monking, @all!
everyone seems to be mentioning laptops 'round these parts. Ima get me a new one for Christmas. Any suggestions? I'm not a gamer, so massive graphics capabilities aren't an issue, however, I may do some photo editing/video editing, so it's not a total non-issue.
I believe in "spend the most you reasonably can now to maximize the life span". Looking at around $1000 budget.
Any recommendations on what to look for and what to avoid?
(wife & I have a nice arrangement - provide exact specs on what you want so the other gets the precise item you want. Avoids disappointment and/or wasted money when buying high-$ gifts.)
Also, close, but no cigar... :)

AIUI, GPU doesn't matter that much for the photo/video. In that case, the CPU/memory matters much more. However, it does make a big difference to not have integrated GPU as that just sucks away the resources you need for other stuff. So a lappy that has its own GPU card, even if it's only a mediocre one is far better than one with only integrated GPU.

Interesting - hadn't thought about that. thanks.
I've always been a bit of an AMD fanboi - not so much because they're "better" (a relative & subjective term if ever there was one), but because I like rooting for the underdog.

Be careful to at least have a GPU better than the current gen integrated GPUs :P

I know the Ax series included a separate GPU on the CPU die. I don't know if they've followed that pattern into the Ryzen line.

I get more fluidity out of my Intel HD 3000 than my GT240M

RE: Mat's PR - I saw he edited a xaml file. There is no corresponding "designer", like we see w/ settings, right?

now see, @Elcan, you're starting to speak Greek. I'm so far out of touch on hardware, I don't even know what those are!
Last time I bought a video card with intent to improve video performance, they were using 4-digit numbers. I know they wrapped around and truncated to 3-digit at some point instead of going to 5-digit, but... lost
I guess I could be Joe-average consumer and allow myself to be wowed by the sales material, but that just doesn't seem right

lot of manufacturers do it. Why, I don't know.
for digital SLRs, D5 > D850 > D80

1DX mk II > 1D X > 5D Mk IV > 5DS R > 5DS > 6D Mk II > 77D > 7D mk II > T7i > T5i > SL2 > T6S > T6I > SL1 > T5
If you go by price, at least...
The "xDy" models are all full-frame, pro-grade where smaller "x" is better, while the "Txy" and "SLx" are crop-sensors where bigger "x" is better.
consistency FTW!
(And for $5500 for the 1DX mkII body, you'd better be pretty serious about your photography since you could get a decent used car for that much cash!)
anyway...
Back on-topic. I'm still having issues with RD not responding to short-cut keys (build 4129 installed this morning).
I closed all code panes, opened one up (wasn't open previously) and nada.
Ctrl-Shft-I does not bring up the Inspection window, even though all short cuts are enabled and at their default settings

> Win10, Excel2016 (desktop), RD build .4129 freshly installed this am

Installed .4129 this morning. The `Rubberduck | Settings` command has no effect. The settings dialog does _not_ open.

From the `Rubberduck` menu, I _can_ bring up:

- Test Explorer
- Indent Current Procedure (Not sure what that did - no code panes were open at all)
- Code Explorer
- Code Metrics
- ToDo list
- RegEx Assistant
- Export Active Project dialog
- Code Inspections
- About

So, this seems pretty i

@Duga most likely because of the renamed AC setting key; @FreeMan have you tried wiping the settings file?

> A config key serialized as an attribute was renamed; this probably messes up with deserializing the settings file. Does it load if the settings file is deleted (/renamed) before startup?

I renamed rubberduck.config and still no love, @MathieuGuindon

@MathieuGuindon Build issue? AutoCompleteSettings.xaml was modified 10 hours ago - AutoCompleteSettings.xaml.cs was modified 5 months ago.

@Comintern that's what I wondered, too:

1:51 PM
@FreeMan Did you get a log?

51 mins ago, by this
RE: Mat's PR - I saw he edited a xaml file. There is no corresponding "designer", like we see w/ settings, right?
But -- I did look at the xaml.cs and it has nothing worth changing.

> I renamed the `rubberduck.config` file and still no love.

Here's a log file for your perusal.
[RubberduckLog.txt](https://github.com/rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck/files/2572122/RubberduckLog.txt)

Also, of note, the `.config` file did _not_ get recreated when RD was opened, but I presume that may only get recreated when the settings dialog is launched, leaving something of a catch-22.

it's only the code-behind for the xaml, after all

> System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.Windows.Markup.XamlParseException: A 'Binding' cannot be set on the 'MinNumber' property of type 'NumberPicker'. A 'Binding' can only be set on a DependencyProperty of a DependencyObject.

what I'm not sure is whether there's actually a equivalent .designer for xaml that's just not there next to the file.

1:53 PM
That's the same issue @IvenBach is running into.

@Duga it seems that @Comintern beat you to it...

@Comintern but... isn't the property a DependencyProperty?
gotta run

Not entirely sure what, but I'm guessing that something didn't autogen. I'll sync next after work and see if it builds with Sunburst.
I might also need to clone Iven's repo to get some more clues as to what isn't building.

> Additional info:

The settings menu _does_ work in build 4124. It does _not_ work in build 4128.

@FreeMan HP Envy is my go-to.

@Duga @FreeMan Your old settings file should work - the only thing that should happen if it can't deserialize the AC settings is that it will fall back to the defaults.

I always run quad-core, but my brother has a dual-core, and it works just fine (he doesn't use it as aggressively as I do (some gaming/programming), but I think it would run just fine for me too.
You could get the lower end one for anywhere for $700+. I get the $1600 one without any addons. You can go up to about $2000, or so; maybe a bit higher, for the "best" ones.

Thanks, @Hosch250. Bought my son an Asus for college about 18 months ago. I think that's working for him pretty well, too. If I could get him to respond to a text message, I might know for sure...

I have a Dell Latitude 5590 at work. It works great too.
15".

@Comintern wasn't too worried about the lack of settings file. :)

2:11 PM
I'd definitely get this one again, if I stopped liking HPs as much.
Starts at $800.

@Hosch250 we have Dell E640xx series at work. Yes, they're old as dirt! We also have some ThinkPads. They're slightly newer...

The Dell's tend to run on the low end for RAM, though.
HP comes with 8GB by default and offer up to 16GB.

> This issue is not fixed. If running inspections after parseing is disabled, the inspection results in the code inspection window do not get invalidated.

This is a possible cause for issue #4503.

The Dell comes with 4GB by default.
I just find HP to be the highest power for the best price, but have fun picking one :)

@Hosch250 that's useful info! Yeah... I'll get into it with spreadsheets and charts and... end up with "meh... I'm tired of looking, this'll do"

> The instructions for compiling this addin do not work as of Nov 12 2018. Using Office 365 (2016) 64 bit.

I changed the powershell execution policy to allow unrestricted running however for each source file I received a dialog box asking me to unblock the file.

Oh, and HP has a "gaming" laptop that's quite cheap too. The Omen, I think.
IIRC, it's got even better specs and lower price than the Envy.

Omen? Such inspiring name.

LOL.
My parents are creeped out by it.

Depends, is it a good Omen or a bad Omen?

2:21 PM
They don't like the name "Envy" either, though.
And then there's the Zen or something, by another brand (Acer, Asus, or something, I forget).
FWIW, brands I won't buy are Lenovo (Chinese spyware FTW!) and Toshiba (my sister had one, and it didn't work well).

> I cannot recreate this error applying the quickfix immediately after the inspection result got created.

Did you do anything between generating the inspection result and applying the quickfix? Here a setting might play a role: do you have running the inspections after parsing disabled in the settings?

With this disabled I can recreate the issue by running the inspections, then adding a new line with some whitespace, parsing and then choosing to apply the fix to the inspection.

@FreeMan tbh 90% of time it's usually a "bad".

oof... I'll keep that in mind...
Going through code inspections on an Excel worksheet. Got a Module 'Sheet35' has no '@Folder' annotation. The quick fix is to add an @Ignore. Me thinks there should be an Add @Folder ("Don't put code behind in your worksheets") annotation option, too
^ only 1/2 joking

2:38 PM
@FreeMan There's an issue.
I tried working on it; I just quit when it came to reworking the Rename UI to support it instead of rewriting an identical one :)
Too many types were hard-coded and couldn't be turned into generics.

eh? it's broken?
@ThunderFrame!!!!! Glad you're doing well enough to stop by!

Hi, @ThunderFrame!
@IvenBach He's here again!
@FreeMan All the things are broken :P

@MathieuGuindon I just emailed you my blog idea brain dump. Let me know if you want me to elaborate on anything. Hopefully most topics, even if sparse, give you an idea of what I'm thinking

@Hosch250 well... that's not good!

2:42 PM
Really, though, we just need to clean up (some of) our UIs a bit to support different VMs.

@ThunderFrame Hey there! Nice to see you drop by.

@ThunderFrame #TeamPlayer

@ThunderFrame saw it - that's awesome! thanks!

We've forced a 1x1 map between V and VM the way it's set up.

@Hosch250 @IvenBach is probably still asleep on CA time...

2:43 PM
@all thanks for the mentions.

@Hosch250 between "Virtual" and "Virtual Machine"???

@FreeMan Probably, but pinged him just in case, because he was disappointed he missed the last one.
@FreeMan View and View Model.

@ThunderFrame Thanks for stopping by and all the effort you're still putting into this project!

@Comintern I missed you last time, and I gather you had a question. Was there something I could help with?

@ThunderFrame No, no question. Just nice to have you around.

2:45 PM
@FreeMan I'd play the 100% dedicated card, except it's more an inability to sleep.

LOL... We'll take what we can get! :)
You doing as well as can be expected?
(except for the insomnia)

> Found a few more examples:

Application.StatusBar = "Printing for: " & customerName

With "Object variable 'StatusBar'" being flagged. According to [MS Docs](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/vba/api/excel.application.statusbar), `Application` is an object, while the property `StatusBar` is a string.

Is the issue that the inspection is seeing the Application object and throwing, instead of digging deeper to note that the property in question is _not_ an object?

@FreeMan I'm exceeding expectations. Some of my doctors have revealed that I've gone 15-16 months longer than they thought. Recent prognosis have been wrong too, but I'm afraid it's just a matter of time. But it's been great to have support from family, friends and colleagues. And I kind of feel lucky for getting a chance to say goodbye to people, unlike those that pass suddenly from tragedies.

potentially dumb question: Why would Range.Font.Size take a Variant, not an int Long or Double?

Because it's COM compliant?

> Hi. Sorry about that.
I don’t actively support this project anymore, but would be happy to evaluate pull requests.

What would you pass in there other than a numeric value that would be useful?

@FreeMan because what value are you returning when the selection has a Font property but represents 3 labels with different sizes?

3:03 PM
^ ah!
Or it's a cell with multiple fonts defined. OK, that makes sense.

at least that's what I'd think it is. could be wrong :)

@Duga @Rubberuck! It's a plethora of old stalwarts!

@Comintern /nitpick Automation.
Thunderframe, keep beating them!

Nitpick accepted.

@Comintern & @MathieuGuindon, however, a Variant still doesn't require the Set keyword...

3:06 PM
OTOH, it's a crappy name.

:)

just "Automation" is too misleading
"Automation protocol" or something would have been more clearer
But... Microsoft.

@this very similar to "Miata" - it's the answer to 99.99% of the questions.

No clue what's a Miata.

@FreeMan Yeah, yeah. There's a TODO comment there in the code...

3:08 PM
@this sigh... It is the answer to every automotive question.
@Comintern no worries. It'll get fixed.

@FreeMan Not sure I follow. How is a toy over the air an answer to every automotive question?

For example, my Python 3 question that keeps getting duplicate and poorly-formatted answers posted.

@MathieuGuindon Python 3 is Python 3. It can't become outdated.

This time I used the `Use 'Set' Keyword` quick fix, and this is what I got:

RS.Set ActiveConnection = dbConfig.SetupConnection(dbConfig.SQLConString)

@MathieuGuindon Protected, I guess.
Where you have to have 10 rep to answer.
It's just getting answers from 1k trolls.

yeah. locked posts can't even be voted on.
@Hosch250 free flags!

@MathieuGuindon I tried.

downvote then

They got declined because they did "answer the question", were reasonable enough to keep, they are just plain duplicate noise, and aren't as good as the top 2 answers.
@MathieuGuindon I do.
But it's still annoying.

3:49 PM
@Hosch250 yeah that's quite exactly what downvotes are for :)

@Hosch250 post 'em here - we'll create a down-vote cabal to blast the trolls back to the <10 point dungeon where they belong! Bwahahahaha....

LOL.

:D

But really, everything below 10 votes on that question should be nuked, IMO.
11 answers.

@MathieuGuindon A) how is an answer determined to be (and identified as) canonical? B) once outdated, it's no longer canonical by definition, right?

3:51 PM
That leaves 4 still, of only which the top 2 are needed.
Also, they could add a flag "this answer is no longer canonical".
To unlock it and allow new answers.
They could even have a flag queue. "Is this answer canonical" for a special type of flag.
Where the answer could get improved if needed and marked by community consensus.
At the end of the day, it would almost be like turning existing material into the failed Docs if they let you browse canonical Q/As.

not a bad idea per se, but my prediction is still that it gets shot down on meta :)

Mine too.
But, I should at least try it at some point.
Got tons of work to do, except I'm blocked by waiting on DB migrations.
I have a meeting at 2 to discuss them.
Then it'll be another day or two before I can get to them.
Pretty much every single ticket I've been getting has needed a migration.
So, that's all day today that I don't have much to do.
