We have a language tag with 46 questions, and also linguistics with 2 questions. The tags have identical descriptions, so I think they should be synonyms. Is there any difference between these two tags?
@ool Pretty much, yes. One reference (later edited out) in a puzzle for the community, and one in a comment (now deleted) on the accepted answer - not counting a question and comments on meta seeking clarification on spam/plagiarism issues. @Doorknob deemed these a "substantial proportion" of my several hundred posts and comments in that time, said they exist "solely to promote" the site I co-own, and issued a year-long ban.
Re. being called a liar in public, I did reply to that, albeit not very visibly (2nd comment on that answer). While suspended I'm not allowed to use the sock account, but of course I can't stop the others from doing so. IP tracing or whatever will hopefully show it's not me posting from there.
@ool We do not typically discuss suspensions in public. I will say that this was cleared by another moderator and a Community Manager from Stack Exchange, and that rand al'thor had been toeing the line for a suspension for quite some time. If you'd still like to raise an objection, you may do so by following the directions in this meta.SE post.
@ool It's very hard to have community discussions about suspensions because so many of the details have to be kept private. There's nothing stopping you from posting on our per-site meta though.
@Doorknob There is: ool doesn't have sufficient rep to do that.
FWIW I'm happy for the details to be made public: don't worry about protecting my privacy. More input from unbiased parties like @ool would be welcome (@BaileyM? @AE? @f''? @McMagister?)
@ool Again, I cannot reveal the details in public (not just to protect his privacy, but because of legal reasons), but the suspension was justified. The standard protocol is 7 days for the first suspension, 30 days for the second, and 365 days for the third, which has been followed here.

That's okay, because the community can't see everything we can on this point, nor is aware of the complete moderation history as would be required to make such a decision.
user61230
From the outside, 365 day bans always look wrong, because everything that lead up to them has always been cleaned up.

And we're fairly explicitly disallowed from sharing that information. That's why we asked a CM to make sure we weren't making the wrong decision.
user61230
Then that's okay, but chat isn't the place to do it.

Of course. This happens almost every time a high reputation user is suspended for a year anywhere. You'll also need to understand that even if rand says it's okay, there's still information we can't share, though.
@Emrakul has someone made a meta post about this? Should someone make a meta post about this? I'm sure you and the other mods can see that, from my and many others' points of view, this looks wildly too drastic. I'm worried about the consequences of losing the singular top poster on our site. Where is the best place for us to learn (as much as we can) about what transpired?
@Doorknob or any other diamond moderators, this is a question you can answer too, I'm sure. I just have the better rapport with Emrakul ;)

@BaileyM I would rather not, unless absolutely necessary. The first step is to talk privately with that user if they feel it's too drastic. The second step would be to message community managers. The third would be to open it up publicly.
user61230
I understand the community is concerned, and a meta post on how best to move forward may be constructive, but a post on what happened likely won't be.
@pacoverflow Private chatrooms exist, but this would not be a proper use for them. If a user wishes to be contacted privately, they can put their email address or another method of contact in their profile or provide it somewhere else.

@BaileyM Suspending someone necessarily opens a line of communication. Suspended users can always respond privately to moderators. All conversations and messages are seen and reviewed by community managers.
@BaileyM or anyone else: if you write a meta post about the issue, feel free to use this:
(and note that each of the first 3 sentences in the message is actually false)
I agree with @ool that there should be a meta post about this (even though I won't be able to present my own point of view there). People should be as fully informed as possible before they decide whether they want to join/stay in this community or boycott the site.
I made this site great again almost single-handedly after the moderators "dun goofed" (to quote Doorknob himself) in December and drove away almost all the active users. I've been participating constantly for months: making tons of (I believe high-quality) posts, trying to keep the overall quality up, moderating the review queues, keeping chat and meta alive, and doing my best to promote Puzzling.SE elsewhere. This is the kind of gratitude I get.

@BaileyM @pacoverflow and everyone else: feel free to contact me at [email protected]
@randal'thor Have you messaged the community managers, as Emrakul suggested? (Then again I do realize you are not on good terms with some of the CMs, so I'm not sure how fruitful a discussion that would be.)
@ool Sockpuppets are not necessarily always created to deceive. I have one myself. And reputation is by no means "a measure of how big a positive contribution a user is felt by the community to have made to the site." It's a very, very rough measure of how much knowledge you have about the topic of the site, and how much you have contributed to the community in terms of questions and answers only.
@ool So who's sock account are you? You seem to have more knowledge and interest in this issue than your profile would suggest. It appears that you are not an unbiased party as has been suggested. PS - Not all users on this site are strong supporters of rand al'thor.
@ool Sorry, could you clarify what you mean by your first sentence? I'm not sure I fully understand it. Also, reputation is almost never a factor in determining whether to suspend a user. IIRC users in the 300k+ range have been suspended on Stack Overflow before—this is because of problematic behavior, and just because you have a bunch of rep doesn't mean you can get away with it.
this debate has been derailed into rubbish about rep... pls, let's keep it to the grosse misuse of authority and mismoderation of PSE in suspending an honest user with insufficient reason to do so. this is essentially an "appeal to authority". don't run away... don't be an escapist... guys, face it. #FreeTheSE1
