Hey o/ I've got a potential idea for a puzzle, but I'm not entirely sure if it's fully a puzzle or a mathematically puzzling thing. Basically, it's around finding an answer to this question, and a couple of related extensions - and more specifically, proving your answer is correct:

That could be an interesting question actually: what group of 5 states have the longest total name, under the constraint that you must be able to travel from one state to another in the group, and form a cycle where you return the original start?
("states" being "US states") Thoughts?

@cairdcoinheringaahing would you be allowing computer-aided/based answers or not?

@bobble Hadn't really considered it, but probably yes. Redwolf tried brute forcing it and ran out of memory, so clearly its not trivialised by computers

By "travel" do you mean by land?
(These are just my reflexive clear-specification questions)

1:52 AM
@bobble Yes, land borders
I'm not too worried about a clear spec - I've got experience writing challenges over on CGCC which are kinda similar to what I've seen here. It's more the on-topic-ness of the puzzle I'm concerned about

I have a feeling if you posted it you'd get a patented "RobPratt Integer Linear Programming" answer
I'm not experienced with the puzzle vs program policy's edge cases, 'fraid I'm not much help

@cairdcoinheringaahing looks at code I'm currently using to brute force Wordle patterns 👀 sounds doable

@cairdcoinheringaahing I'm guessing, for instance Maine is out of the picture, as it only has one border?
And does Michigan → Indiana→ Illinois → Iowa → Wisconsin a valid loop, despite not being part of the same connected landmass?

The answers to this might need to be more heavily moderated - it keeps accumulating new ones that are just people tossing their vague ideas in, no proofs of optimality or anything

Q: What's the optimal strategy for Wordle?

EphraimRuttenbergWordle is a game by Josh Wardle in which you try to guess a 5-letter word in at most six attempts. After each guess, the letters which are not in the word are highlighted in grey, the letters which are in the word, but are in the wrong place are highlighted in yellow, and the letters which are in...

@AncientSwordRage for simplicity's sake, I think that should be valid, because each of those borders crossed are US state land borders

@cairdcoinheringaahing sounds good to me
@bobble yeah I think so too

Q: Triangle above me, I rise to the top

Bgil Midol Triangle above me, I rise to the top. Triangle below me, I fall to the bottom. A thousand and above, If you click me, up and down. What am I?

Q: Longest infinite loop of 5 states

caird coinheringaahingThis is based on a question I posed in The Nineteenth Byte: What group of 5 states have the longest total name, under the constraint that you must be able to travel from one state to another in the group, and form a cycle where you return the original start? For example, California → Oregon → W...
