CCCC hint 2: First letter is D.

12:55 AM

1:16 AM
@bobble hmmm
Philosophers (and others important in the history of philosophy), listed alphabetically: Note: This list has a minimal criteria for inclusion and the relevance to philosophy of some individuals on the list is disputed. == D == Jean le Rond d'Alembert (1717–1783) Damascius (c. 462–540) Peter Damian (c. 1007–1072) Hubert Damisch (1928–2017) Arthur Danto (1924–2013) Charles Darwin (1809–1882) Erasmus Darwin (1731–1802) David of Dinant (12th century) David the Invincible (late 6th century) Donald Davidson (1917–2003) Angela Davis (born 1944) Jalal al-Din al-Dawani (1426–1502) Simone de Beauvoir (1908...
I don't think it's here ^
#GreatC4Solutions Unless it's DIES (which is what a nimble ninja does)+ORGAN (like the... Heart... Which is used in a passion process) -R because it's a ninja NOT a pirate. And as it's protecting, you put 8ne around the other DI+OGEN-ES
Which would give DIOGENES

@bobble thanks, I almost looked like a fool

@AncientSwordRage did someone (ab)use their mod powerz?

The first letter is D? Hmm, maybe DEXTROUS is on the table again

1 hour later…
2:57 AM
@Sciborg Deus(ovi) as ninja makes sense, and X as passionate (like movies) or passionate process (a kiss) too, if loosely, but that leaves TRO and I'm not seeing it.

Ooh, I didn't think about X = passionate
but yeah, i don't see the rest of the wordplay there

3 hours later…
6:30 AM
DAVIDSON is a philosopher... AVID is passionate and DON could maaaybe be donatello the ninja turtle, but then "process" would need to be S

Wikipedia tells me that Rene Descartes talked a lot about passions... I'm confident enough that there would be some sort of process there. However, DIRENESS isn't an adjective, let alone one meaning "nimble", and DISS does not mean "ninja" in any way I can think of.

7:11 AM
@Jafe Well, there is something called the s-process.

interesting
@GarethMcCaughan is the c4 answer D(AVID+S)ON?

7:34 AM
@bobble just a teensy bit
@Jafe you don armour

i don't, generally

7:54 AM
then you are a fool, for you are not prepared for the adversaries that may storm your towers at any time. shame upon you, sir.

Q: A Fiery Conversation

Dannyu NDos 1st member: It's too cold. Hey, can you [my prefix] some wood to endure this blizzard? 2nd member: Of course. FEW MOMENTS LATER 2nd member: There's a [my prefix]oon outside. Hey, can you check whether the gate has erosion? 3rd member: Err... I'll do my best. FEW MOMENTS LATER 3rd member: Now it'...

10:52 AM
@Jafe Yes! Well done. I felt a little guilty about S for "process" (and I don't know anything about the TMNT so don't know whether calling Don specifically "nimble" is fair), but I was willing to compromise a little for the nice echo of the previous clue :-).

yay!
CCCC: The people here gathered around Rand, the Great One (5)

1 hour later…
11:58 AM
@Jafe WAYNE = W(AYN)E (Gretzky)

that's right!

Nice :)

@JeremyDover That's the one :) Admittedly an Afrikaans spelling rather than the Anglicised RHEBOK, but I liked the surface too much!

Thanks :)

@JeremyDover i think it's SHOT*+MBE making TSHOMBE

You think correctly!

quick caps question: is it "Old Lady Tyrone" or "old Lady Tyrone" or "old lady Tyrone"?

12:46 PM
CCCC: I'm dying to entertain old lady Tyrone's neighbour (6)
going with option 3

I think it could be any, depending on the context.

i've got a solid idea of where the def is but i can't quite make the wp fit
or i could be completely on the wrong track

1:03 PM
@Jafe I love this one! ARMAGH = ARGH! (I'm dying!) 'entertaining' MA (old lady)
i.e. AR(MA)GH

ahh, that makes sense.
i had the def but i thought the ending was AGH* for old lady
from HAG

hehe that's correct
@TakingNotes yeah you can't anagram letters that aren't in the clue, it would have to be "entertain hag" with some word indicating anagramming

yeah no, i was questioning myself on that one but didn't have any other rabbit holes to go down

almost done with the preamble for tomorrow's crossword
in time, for once... glad i fired the other guy

^ *gladys i fired the other guy...

1:17 PM
it's gonna be my 400th puzzle here, btw!
originally planned for the grand finale of the series to be #400 but i ruined it by posting a couple of non-gladys puzzles in between
would have been cool since the first puzzle of the first gladys series was #200 but i thought it didn't matter that much :P

Not just kissing up, but I REALLY enjoy your puzzles jafe. Even if I'm not in time to compete, they're just excellent solves. I would seriously like to subscribe to your newsletter.

thanks, that's really nice to hear!

Q: Four equations for the same number?

DrDUsing creative thinking can you show 9 = 4 9 = 8 9 = 14 9 = 24 All four equations follow the same logic/method. While you are at it can you also show (same logic) 55 = 4 ?

1 hour later…
4:23 PM
@Dmihawk I figured out the logic behind when the bug was showing up and made a report. Now to do things I was supposed to an hour ago when I started writing up the report....

6 hours later…

This C4 is annoying me a little, because it looks as though it should be an easy one but I can't seem to get it.
The "won't fizz" is especially irksome. I'm trying to figure out its role, and nothing really makes sense.
