In geometry, a regular icosahedron ( or ) is a convex polyhedron with 20 faces, 30 edges and 12 vertices. It is one of the five Platonic solids, and the one with the most sides. It has five equilateral triangular faces meeting at each vertex. It is represented by its Schläfli symbol {3,5}, or sometimes by its vertex figure as 3.3.3.3.3 or 35. It is the dual of the dodecahedron, which is represented by {5,3}, having three pentagonal faces around each vertex. A regular icosahedron is a strictly convex deltahedron and a gyroelongated pentagonal bipyramid and a biaugmented pentagonal antiprism in any...

@JeremyDover I don't know what "bug" does, but certainly "gold" is AU and ahead of it is the month of JUNE to get JUNEAU :0
04:18
gold can also be OR though and the bug may actually be a type of bug
04:51
@oAlt maybe it's "bug month" because "junebug" is a thing
yeah (searched it too)
Only problem I have with it is that it would have to be "month bug" instead of "bug month"
i think it works... "bug" is modifying "month" so it comes first
like "christmas month" would be december because "christmas" is the modifier
if it was "month bug" you'd be looking for the name of a bug, not the name of a month, right?
hmmm
Maybe somehow June is a month of some type of bugs
but i didn't see anything like that in wikipedia, or I just overlooked
05:39
horseflies, in these parts (also, july)
fortunately they're eventually swarmed out by mosquitoes the size of my eyeball
05:54
oh, those bugs
06:29
@people-who-have-read-LotR is MORDOR a capital of some sort?
If yes, then M+OR+DOR fits
(cc @JeremyDover )
mordor is more akin to a country i think?
Is it?
Welp
Worth a shot
mordor was the entire land controlled by sauron, the capital was called, um... (inconspicuously loads up google)
07:10
@jafe that looks very likely the answer
07:20
yeah i think so too

Q: Numerical Boggle

Dmitry KamenetskyYou are probably familiar with the word game Boggle, where you need to form words from letters on a grid. Here we will play a numerical version of the game. The rules are as follows: Create a 6x6 grid of digits. Each cell must contain a single digit from 0 to 9. Starting in one cell you collect ...

Q: A Cousin's Code: Settle It!

ExalSo I have a younger cousin who's been hanging out with a group of other teens recently. Unfortunately, my cousin is at the stage where they don't want to talk about their friends to their parents, so my aunt is freaking out that the group's all into drugs, or gang wars, or drug-fueled gang wars....

@oAlt got it! I struggled mightily to both use the phrase "gold bug" and extract June from bug somehow.

Q: Mathematics in adolescence

PsplWhen I start to teach probabilities, I challenge my students with the following: Thelma is 16 years old and can only go out at night if one of her parents gives her permission. Q: An Elementary Connect Fano Plane

Jeremy DoverI never thought I'd be able to make a connect Fano plane out of chemical elements, since there are so few to choose from. And I was right, but I got really close. So if you haven't seen previous connect Fano planes, they are very much like a connect wall, except you are given seven words (element...

@Randal'Thor Thanking you muchly :) Nice to achieve the milestone on your puzzle all about milestones! And yeah, I loved the Playmobil man but felt it was time for a change... so for a while I'm going to let my profile pic evolve as my daughter's drawings of me evolve with time...
Aww, didn't realise it's your daughter's drawing of you. That's better than a Playmobil man then.
It definitely feels more personal. And as she is now able to draw recognisable people (she's 4) we're entering a really interesting phase! She drew a cracking vampire the other day... never seen so many puddles of blood...

Q: Cryptic crossword: the time is now

Q: Guess your hat color, but you don't have to

klm123Here is the puzzle: N logicians wear N hats, each hat color is selected randomly: black or white. As usual, every logician doesn't see the hat on his own head, but sees the rest. "Ooh, a fun crossword from postmortes", I thought. "And it's at a time of day that means I might get to look at it before Deusovi, which doesn't often happen with crosswords on PSE." sigh :-)
Sorry - this is a perfectly normal time for me to be awake.
(As opposed to the usual jafe release time, which is normal for me but probably wouldn't be for most people.)
Actually, I'm not sure why I'm surprised. If I do the obvious timezone conversion it does indeed come out perfectly sensible.
(And obviously there's nothing preventing me from attacking it after someone else has already solved it. Which I shall be doing shortly.)

Q: On certain triplets of consecutive integers

Bernardo Recamán SantosWhile completelely factorizing integers, my student Luciana noticed that the canonical prime factorization of the three consecutive numbers 81=3^4, 82=2x41, and 83=83, use numbers which are all different: 2,3,4,41, and 83. 18:23
@Randal'Thor Either that was euphemistic litotes, or I'm missing something. I don't understand the surface at all.
18:50
@JeremyDover just wanted to say that I love your puzzles, they make me feel smart and also not smart at the same time. :D
Thanks...I think? :-) Seriously, I'm very glad you enjoy them. They keep me out of trouble, and unlike solving those devilish variant sudokus, making a puzzle usually doesn't keep me up until 3 in the morning.
Definitely a compliment, and yeah yesterday evening I was basically in using-yarn-to-connect-pictures-on-a-wall mode trying to solve your latest cryptic. I'm a huge crossword puzzle buff but had never done a cryptic before and they're so satisfying!
I remember doing my first one, thinking "I don't know about this". And now I can't go back, unless the regular crossword is REALLY well done. There's just something about really GETTING (grokking in fullness, if you're a Heinlein devotee) a cryptic clue that is, exactly as you describe, satisfying.
Have you tried making your own crosswords? Successfully creating one that fits together just right is really challenging and satisfying so I do more of that now than I solve them
Gridding is my weak suit. I feel like I end up cluing a "there" and "yes" a lot, which is not so fun for normal clues, but can really be a challenge for cryptics. I once created a cryptic where (I think) 10 of the entries had the answer AWARE, but with different cluing for each.
19:09
That sounds very silly
It was; that one will never see the light of day. But it was great practice writing the various wordplay elements.
I'm excited to give more cryptics a try now that I kind of understand how they work!
Meanwhile I'm working on "What is missing from my aunt's inheritance?" and totally stuck
You're in luck with cryptics. postmortes published on today, and jafe should have one out in the morning. I'm 8 clues away from my next, so probably Monday.
Have not looked at that...too many puzzles :-) Good one?
i'd say it's good based on how much time i've spent on it, but I guess TBD based on what the solution is? It's really interesting music note steganography

Q: The words go marching round and round

bobbleHere's another variety crossword type: Marching Bands Rules Words march across each line. Each line has 2 words of variable length. The two words will fill up the whole line. Line 6's words are 5 letters each - they don't go through the black box. Words circle in each band. Each band's words ...

20:13
@bobble when youre back, can I check the tense of 8b? Thanks :)
Gotta say, quite a few good puzzles have come out the past few days. Not enough hours in the day.
@Beastly, it's past tense
Agreed, especially when I have work to do as well -_-
ah, got the wrong @
Right back @ya?
20:19
I've made some progress with @bobble 's, pretty sure I have band D complete
Just a few I can't work out :)
Yay!?
I had to use some words I didn't like, especially when I was finishing the grid
also made progress with bobble's! this is a fun puzzle. I think there's a typo in B6 though, should it be "Acid used in vegetable oil"?
Seems like a really good puzzle though! Enough straightforward clues to get you started and then the rest are just vague enough to be solvable but still difficult. Really fun so far! :)
@kristinalustig, I'll fix it
fixed.
lol i don't know the answer regardless :D
20:22
@bobble don't worry thats to be expected with grids so word-dense, I'd have been amazed if there weren't some dodgy words in there :)
Every letter is double-checked, at least
Do you like the not knowing word lengths? I could add them in for the next puzzle.
Oh no its much more fun without
Most words you can work out the word length from the straightforward clues anyways :)
+1, much better without word length
You do get 3 word lengths, though: Row 6's and Band E
Exactly, we have just enough to make progress, but not too much
Row 2 is the most annoying, the two answers I swear it must be dont fit :P
20:26
@BeastlyGerbil I have the same problem! probably with the same words, too
That was the last line I filled in, the first word is dodgy
I imagine rot13(yrpgre, gnaqrz?)
Ok that helps a little @bobble
OH no... I messed up 2b's clue! will fix right now
20:28
whew!
Ah now things make more sense :P
Those were the first two I got and was very confused when they didnt fit
fixed. B2 was also messed up
so sorry
ohhh that's okay!!
Don't worry no harm done! I'm guessing you just got them slightly the wrong way round
Yeah, I was messing with the words and entered them in the wrong spot on my spreadsheet

Q: Remember the 60s? Far out man!

chasly - reinstate MonicaCan you convert the following to my unusual currency? 1.25, 1.75, 2.75, 3.25 Okay, so you've done that. Out of curiosity: what determines the time-lag between posting a puzzle and the bot posting in chat?
It varies, I'm not really sure. Sometime's its instant, sometime it takes a while. I guess its a matter of how long it takes to detect a new question
oh no...
did i make another mistake?
I think I just got the sailor pun... and its awful lmaooo
No dw thats amazing :P
:)
It was the non-punny phrase, but I couldn't make the Band word work so I used a pun instead
I was worried that using puns in crosswords was illegal, so I tried to clue it generously
20:39
I wouldn't say this a crossword, more your own puzzle that uses crossword clues
I'm sure we can make an exception :P
The type is from a puzzle book's "Variety Crosswords" section
usually if there's a pun the clue ends with a question mark
Should I add one?
no need, you clued it by saying it was a pun
I do clearly say "punny"
20:45
I'm right in assuming that the first word in a band starts in the top left corner right?
Yes, they start at the box indicated by a letter
Ok, i thought so just wanted to make sure :)
20:59
for a couple of these there's probably no way i'd get them without google, so i'll have to wait and see what someone else gets
7a is a complete mystery
That's a dodgy one.
do you want a rot13 hint?
I have 7a
Mostly got it through the surrounding letters
nah, it's okay. there's also just someone else named hannibal apparently hah
@kristinalustig yeah all I know is the first letter of the surname:P
i have basically the whole grid filled... except 10 and 11 are completely blank
21:03
Similar but missing some at the top
It gets harder for the outer rings
oh neat, a Marching Bands crossword!
See if you can catch up :)
it's amazing the kinds of words that i am trying to convince myself are slang for diaper
Same!
I was convinced it was the obvious one
But apparently not
21:06
I just realized that the diaper-slang one should be plural
Fixed, sorry
Does A2 also have a plurality mismatch?
The answer is plural
hm, alright
It's not a normal, stick-an-s-on-the-end plural, though
uh, okay then
21:10
is A3 actually past tense?
never mind i just figured it out
...no i didn't hahah
A3 is past tense
I'm pretty sure I have it, but I don't know A1 or A2
If you have some of the Marchers, you might be able to place it anyways
FWIW I got A2 (i think) and i've literally never heard this term before
It's fair though, right?
21:13
yyeaahhhh... i suppose :P
Should outer layers have easier clues?
it's hard for me to say until i finish the puzzle i think
this is really good though
YAYAYAYAYAY
I've got 3-9 done except for one letter, and the rest I have very little for
Yesterday I got really excited talking about the crossword to my family, and they just looked at me confused.
21:17
I just want to know what 'diaper, informally' is at this point
@bobble its very good!!
I mean, I could give you a cryptic for it if that would help
yeah, same. i have a guess but i really need it to not be a typical plural or else it messes up my outer circle
Maybe a small hint would be good for that
I only have the last letter and I can't see what on earth it could be
What kind of hint? Individual letters or a cryptic?
I don't think a hint is necessary
21:19
did you get it?
not just yet, at least - the puzzle's only been out for an hour
no, but I'm still working on rings A and B
I think I have it
maybe
I believe it wouldn't be plural though
It'll have an entry on dictionary.com if you're right
oh wait it's not plural
ahhhg i read it wrong
very very sorry
Well the definition it gave me was not the one I was expecting but its there
sorry
I had it right originally!
21:23
No problem!
hm, I have no idea which Hannibal 2a should be referring to - the obvious answer doesn't work, and I don't see any others that look like they fit
i have a guess in there that sounds like a name
Same here. I think I have the starting letter but thats it
... and i messed up A7, as well. gods, I need to quadruple-check
Ah now that changes everything
21:32
IMO remove the quotes from A6, makes it more interesting
Now i have the hannibal one
same, but I don't know what that makes B1
also, shouldn't 11a be "Lets go"?
@Deusovi, yes
Obligatory very very sorry
...can you double-check the entirety of row 2 and its corresponding entries in B?
I think I have B1, but then can't work out 2b
21:35
row 2 is right, i have it
because I don't think 2a and 2b fit together to give me something for B1
Just did, they are correct
Ah got it
yay!
I think B1 is a bit tricky but you can get there eventually
21:38
hm, alright
But then what on earth is border checking officials? Like I have an answer for the grid but never heard of that
ah alright
It requires some knowledge of the different referees in various sports matches
I have a feeling I've got a word wrong somewhere rn
bobble, I don't think you need to spoil anything unless there's a problem with the clue
21:42
i've been thinking about A4 and A5 for.... ages. they're the only ones i still need
sorry?
I know it can be tempting to try to push people towards the answer, but I've usually found it's better to hold back
okay
@kristinalustig exact same. And also A1 I'm somehow stuck on
dramatic music plays in the background Who shall claim the checkmark first?
21:45
Probably not me at this rate :P
Lol I got the pun completely wrong
I thought it was 'Buoy out!' lol
Got it now
solved
I started an hour early and deus still beat me :P
oh, gosh darn it, i literally only had the diaper clue left :(
good job :D
You're too fast deus :P
I'm sorry for all of the clue mistakes :(
21:53
@Deusovi you're missing 'dreg' in one of the explanations I believe
oh yeah, you're right - will fix, one sec
Also, never heard of 'didie'
I haven't either
it was a really good puzzle. i would say one small bit of feedback is that the super obscure A5 and super obscure B3 were.... rough
Very enjoyable! Even if I got stuck a ton :P
And very good work Deus as usual
100k approaching!
21:55
yeah - for obscure clues, it's generally preferable to be direct with them. this goes double for when they're on the edges, because the top and bottom rows of a Marching Bands are generally much harder to get
back to staring confusedly at "what is missing from my aunt's inheritance"
Noted.

Avi
Avi
@bobble better choose wisely
So... puzzle?
22:21
Out of interest how do you guys think up puzzle ideas?
for the one i made a couple of days ago, i thought "wouldn't it be cool if there was a puzzle that _____" and then i worked backwards from the innermost part
I browse puzzle books
But then, I usually make crosswords. People don't mind doing lots of crosswords, but they do mind if multiple riddles, say, use the same gimmick over and over.
Interesting, I'm probably more similar to you @kristinalustig but I usually need a thing of inspiration, it can literally be a basic object, to put an idea in my head
Half the time the ideas aren't great or aren't feasible though
oh i also take inspiration from the various ways that i got other puzzles wrong
Recently my inspiration have been older puzzles of mine which I forgot I made, I've made 120 odd and going back I dont even recognise most lol. But it's a good source of ideas that can be improved on
22:28
Every so often I see a puzzle and get annoyed I didn't think of it first
Especially since its then your style of puzzle and writing
