I am trying to find out what this picture means and where to find it (I could not locate the source). It's really important for me. Thanks everyone for helping.
Tonight premiers the first show of Footmen And Friends, a show dedicated exclusively to kings and pawns. Let's give these soul-men of chess a chance to shine instead of their big sisters and brothers!
For the show's pilot tonight to be a success, tell me, how many moves will it take White to mat...
hehe, i had to go and recheck the dictionary to verify that "make up" can mean "form" when people were stuck on that last clue
i've seen "a french" in published cryptics to mean UN so i thought UNE was fair game as well
definitely a good point to keep clue length in mind... for next week i have one with 83 letters, probably need to break that down a bit before posting!
here's a challenge: come up with the shortest cryptic clue (by letter count)
one that 1) is not a double def and 2) doesn't rely on numbers or punctuation trickery
UNE for "a French" is certainly just as fair as UN is! I've historically disliked the "X French" construction, but I suppose I'm coming around to it with the "X (French)" parsing...
I too tend to write long clues, largely because I find it easier to put together a reasonable surface reading that way (though I don't make them long consciously or deliberately). It's something I need to work on for sure.

If you're allowed to "use the operation $N$ times", couldn't you simply do $$\frac{\pi}{\pi} \times \frac{\pi}{\pi} \times (1+1+ \dots +1)$$
The addition being with $n$ ones.

@msh210 Yeah, I was high on puzzles, how'd you know?!
The following message was received from a friend:
I need you right away to help me use 0x1DD1A to find out how to set up my 0x223C 0x71C487!
The message didn't make sense at first, so I went to him for clarification and he told me he just got an Echo Connect and needed help accessing Google...

This old note with some mathematical relationships was discovered nearby.
Can you use this information to figure out what number each of the 9 symbols on the stone represent?
