I couldn't find any cryptic crossword in my language (Indonesian language), not even just the cryptic clue
I assume it's due to the lack of expressiveness of the language itself..
.. but then I decided to make one.. lol
(yeah I couldn't post it as a puzzle in PSE because the policy of english only -- but I can share if you happen to know any Indonesian puzzler or interested in Bahasa Indonesia lol)

@athin when indonesia gets overrun by a cryptic crossword frenzy we'll know who to blame!

11:02 AM
I doubt that cryptics are impossible in Bahasa Indonesia because the language isn't expressive enough; you can say almost anything in almost any real language. (There are exceptions -- e.g., pidgins -- but even those, once they start having actual native speakers, turn into creoles and rapidly become expressive enough to say anything.)
But I can easily believe it doesn't have the right sort of structure for the sort of devices one finds in English cryptic clues to work.

Q: Another rebus for yer :D

UnidentifiedX What two-word phrase is represented here?

11:58 AM
i just found out last year that there are cryptic crosswords in finnish
needless to say they are not very popular

I've seen cryptics in newspapers here, but my command of the language doesn't allow me to get very far in them at all, alas.
(Sorry, I should specify: Hebrew.)

is english your first language @msh210?

@jafe yes indeed
Why do you ask?

just wondering

Is Finnish yours?

12:08 PM
yeah
but we have two languages at home... my wife speaks russian, daughter speaks both

I wonder whether crosswords (and other things where a single letter is shared by two words) in German and Hungarian and cetera treat e.g. o and ö as the same or different.

in finnish it's always different, at least

@jafe I know someone who moved here from the States and whose wife moved here from Brazil. Their toddler will say sentences incorporating words from three languages.

it's amazing how fast they learn

@jafe interesting. I'd have simply asked you, except I didn't know (or more likely forgot) that Finnish has diacritics. :-/

12:10 PM
yeah we have ä/ö

Nooooo don't count the pixel positions, I placed everything by hand, it's just random noise X-) — Bass 1 hour ago
ouch :-P

hehe

@jafe Did you ever meet humn?

nope

It's funny we have two high-rep Suomi users on PSE.

12:17 PM
i think bass is from finland as well
never met them either, though

Sounds like conversations I have with Israelis. "Oh, you lived in New York? Do you know…"

humn has his own den of awesome surrealism chatroom over there.
@jafe Wow, really?
And I meant "met" as in spoken together on SE, not in real life :-P

@Randal'Thor oh, then I take back my comparison :-)

aa yeah i've seen humn here a couple of times
@Randal'Thor do you mind if i use your name in a crossword's title? (for clickbait purposes, of course)
i've been naming them alphabetically and R is up next
the reason i ask is i have this clue there:
Rand al'Thor's head found near 3 down's region, rolling (3)

@jafe Sure, no problem.
@jafe :-O

12:24 PM
thanks!

And wow, I never noticed the alphabetical thing.
Guess I never saw them together as a group, just looked at some of them as they were posted.

yeah it's pretty easy to miss when there's a week between each post

@Randal'Thor OH MY DAYS. This completely bypassed me and now I feel dirty...

@Stiv Don't worry, we can feel dirty together.

... that came out wrong.

12:50 PM
Btw, just one more close-vote needed here: puzzling.meta.stackexchange.com/q/6590/5373

@jafe I like the SOS and talentspotter clues a lot. Very nice. Not a big fan of the grant one: the first and third parts are too similar. (I haven't looked at all the clues.)

1:13 PM
hmm that's a good point
i wanted to make the swedes clue "acronymic song of swedes" but turns out the answer isn't actually an acronym

A bot should post the xkcd 1378 graphic every time someone says "not a big fan".

hehe

@GarethMcCaughan Ah yeah that is more likely: Bahasa Indonesia may not have the right sort of structure as in English for the cryptic clues to work.
For example, it's not that simple to clue a single letter like in English, we have some abbreviations tho but not many (?) or maybe I'm not aware enough about it

@athin but maybe you can use the equivalent of "house's first" or "primarily, house" to clue H?

@msh210 yeah that's actually possible, tho it's a bit challenging to create a whole sentence clue which... makes sense (?) at least from what I tried
many of my clues doesn't make any sense... but that's cryptic anw so yea lol

1:36 PM
@athin Policy of English only? Never heard of that ;-)

@Randal'Thor uh how about this one? puzzling.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/4670/…

> if you want to post a puzzle which needs the knowledge of any specific language, please feel free.

> [tag:language] tag should only be used in case when the answerer needs to know about a foreign language while answering, not while reading the puzzle.
Basically, if you post your question entirely in a non-English language, that's out. But if you write a post in English surrounding a puzzle which is in another language, that's OK.
We also have some puzzles which essentially treat a foreign language as a cipher to be cracked.

1:55 PM
Hmm, I still hesitate to post, as those puzzles are generally "puzzle about a certain language" not "puzzle in a certain language", except the first one maybe
@Randal'Thor but yeah I got your point here, so maybe i may try to share

2:33 PM
ah here goes nothing
sharing is never wrong~

How do you solve Vowelburgers™ so fast?

They're soooo easy.

maybe for a native English speaker?

Glance at the list. "cave" with A... not super-obvious. "risk" with E... how about "bet"? BAT, ah yes, that'll be it. BIT, yes. BOT, well, maybe, kinda. BUT, yes. Gotta be it. Done.
I'd have had to look up "slash".
(But then the person who did post the answer apparently didn't, because I don't think his explanation is quite right.)
Yes, certainly easier for native speakers.

I didn't know "bet" is such an obvious choice for "risk".
