@Deusovi Confirmed:
At this point in time, it's just going to be SE and SO. We love the SE sites and their vibrant designs and swag but the overhead of printing and storing the swag for all of the sites really caught up with us and it gets pretty expensive. I proudly wear my M&TV shirt on a regular basis and have various SE stickers all over my laptop but... sad to say, that's not something we can bring back. — Catija ♦ 2 hours ago

@Sciborg I think this is ENCOMPASSES (=surrounds ≈makes a big roundabout), from EN (England) COMPASS (North's neighborhood) EaSt (oddly, North's neighbor)

Ahhhhh
That's clever!

Nice solve, msh210!

thirded

Nice clue @Sciborg!

12:04 AM
@JeremyDover thanks

12:32 AM
Yuppers, that's it :D
Nice!
Thank you for allowing me to use your namesake, North, it was a fun clue to make.

@Sciborg Can I use yours?

Sure! I don't mind
You always make really fun clues, so I look forward to it

Well… this one is a 2-a.m.-off-the-cuff one, so don't get your hopes up.
CCCC: Sciborg lost their head? Max! That made up people's feeling of disgust (3,6)

Ahh, now I see how really you feel about me :p
want to see me beheaded

No, no, on the contrary: that would make up my feeling of disgust!

12:46 AM
no worries, no worries :p i'm guessing "lost their head" is most likely a "minus first letter" indicator, but i can't think of any word that contains "ciborg", so perhaps it is more complex...
and 3-6 is an interesting pattern, hm
i would guess the definition is "feeling of disgust," since that seems to fit best
hmm
ah, wait
my name is Mick. (-M)ICK seems plausible
but the rest of it, not sure...

1:07 AM
aaaaaah I found a trivial path through my Easy As LITS. Backing up to Step 4 again...

Oh no! :(

the sad thing is I found it while out biking, and also worked out a tentative solution
should've been concentrating on the scenery

Doing grid deductions in your head is a level of power i can never achieve

well you definitely can't do them in my head
you wouldn't fit

thing is I have stuff I was supposed to be working on for Lit, but I've been giving far too much time to this site

yeah, i have some side project code i was supposed to work on, like... yesterday.
i've been putting it off because C++

I really want someone to post a bad answer so I can downvote it and have an even 5700 rep
well I mean I don't want a bad answer
but if it's already there, then I want to make my rep a round number :D

I hit a perfect 700 on Arqade today, hopefully i can keep it for a while :p

I saw your Flash answer

1:17 AM
You did? I have no idea why it HNQ'd, but I guess a lot of people are looking for ways to deactivate the killswitch
Which is both illegal and unsafe, obviously

hey bobble+'borg!

Hey Matt :D

:)

Please don't upvote me on Arqade, i'm trying to keep this beautiful round number :p

I don't use comment templates because it helps me personalize comments for every specific situation. That means sometimes my comments get long...

that is indeed a long comment

welp deleted already
I've posted far more comments than the tallies in my profile suggest because of how many are deleted

1:43 AM
the counter is a lie

I didn't get a chance to see it, what was the comment about?

yeah that seems to be a lot of work for a comment that will likely not be useful

New user posted an answer basically saying "this puzzle is hard, also that other guy spoiler the answer for me". My comment was a welcome to the community, an explanation of how answers worked and why theirs wasn't one, an explanation of how spoilers work, and a second welcome.
The hope is that some of them will read the comment and try to become better users

a good thing to hope for, but not very likely for every drive-by comment-posted-as-answer
especially not for someone who doesn't know how spoilers work

Is a comment discussion like this flaggable? Or is it fine, or is only part of it bad, or something else?

"Flaggable" for what? If you think it's something we should look at, then flag it. If not, then don't worry about it.

I'm not sure if they're acceptable
I flag things that I think aren't supposed to be there because of site policy
So I'm not sure if they're in conflict with a policy/guideline

If there's a specific reason you think that they may be "in conflict with a policy/guideline" or otherwise bad, then flag them and use that reason. Otherwise, don't worry about it.

sorry for bothering then

@Sphinx @Deusovi you know math - are there any math sub-tags which describe this question?

nothing comes to mind, but also that seems very sketchy

Sketchy how?

as in "it looks very much like it's a competition or exam or some other thing of that sort"

(especially considering the "I heard it from my friend")

4:13 AM
(likely not an exam, probably a programming competition)

how to check for that?
simply copy-pasting parts of the text aren't giving me any hits

there's no easy way to

Hey Deusovi, I ended up not using it, but what would you say to "Thin Lizzy" cluing L in cryptic wordplay? I'm always looking for good rock and roll references.

explain?

That pretty much gives me my answer :-) Thinking of "thin" as a verb (making thinner), could trim Lizzy down to L, but obviously didn't hit.
Admit it could describe any substring of Lizzy, when I put it that way.

4:20 AM
(on another note, my mobile device displays mod diamonds now; not sure if that's true for all mobile devices)

ah, yeah - i wouldn't use "thin" as a verb that way, except maybe for something like "remove the first and last letters"
(yeah, i think it's a new chat feature - it started doing that for me on desktop recently too)

can concur that it appeared recently for me on laptop

oh interesting

Thin Lizzy might be making pizza then...good to know, thanks for the sanity check.

5:10 AM
@msh210 the c4 answer is ICK FACTOR -- Mick beheaded, and Max Factor is a brand of makeup so "max that made up people" can clue FACTOR

ha!

CCCC: Swimmer drops trou, showing behind (4)

6:59 AM
I'm guessing moon, but need to figure out the wp lol

@jafe great surface

hehe thanks

Rough guess: DIVE, wordplay is showing ~ evidence ~ EVID backwards?

@Dmihawk If the definition is "showing behind" it'd have to be MOONING. Though I suppose the definition could be "behind" for MOON.
@Bubbler If the definition is "swimmer", it'd have to be DIVER.
(Also I'm personally unfamiliar with "behind" cluing reversal, though that doesn't necessarily mean anything.)

7:18 AM
I thought the def could be "Swimmer drops trou", though I do think it must be DIVES then
thus rough guess

@Bubbler oh, I see

@PrinceNorthLæraðr weird lol

I was thinking if "drops trou" could somehow clue FRO then we'd have showinG behind making FROG=swimmer. But it can't AFAICT.
Can "drops trou" indicate removal of the second half of a word?
Like, if REAR____ was clued by "swimmer".
or POST____

"showing" could be a substring indicator, though I don't see any 4-letter substrings that could mean "behind"

i'm really thinking to drop plaintext TROU, cuz that one really looks like a part of a word heheh
knew it
@jafe SEA TROUT - TROU = SEAT

7:31 AM
@oAlt yup, that's it :)

woah

same
oops i need to make a new one

@oAlt nice
(not the CCCC) Acrobat drops trou, showing behind (4) Apparently POSTURER is an old word for acrobat, so you get POST (which as a prefix means behind)

hehe
i was trying to make a introduction -> induction clue where dropping trou "may lead to a shock" or something like that until i realized there's no "trou" in "introduction" in the first place

here was me thinking you were just trying to moon us :P

Hi, North!

Hey!
Ahhhh feels good
School is out
Stress is temporarily over
Going over to my friend's house in a bit bc it's his birthday (or was his birthday yesterday)

what are you going to work on now?

Several stuff:
1) A composition-collab with my middle school band teacher
2) My own personal composition
3) Study my butt off for the SAT
4) Finish up my chain puzzle
5) Practice the trumpet like there's no tomorrow
Oh, and 6) Study ahead for next semester

"Study but butt off"?
I remember studying for the SAT...
(and it worked - I got a nice high score)

I mean Khan Academy, what can I say?
1600 here I come (kidding)

4:05 PM
Do you have a baseline to work off?
As in, have you taken it and/or a practice version before?

Yeah, I've taken one practice exam before

was that practice's score 1600?

Going in raw, I think I got a 1230? I've also taken 3 other practice SAT tests from Khan/College board
@bobble I was joking
I'm like 99% sure I'm not getting a 1600
My plan is basically to get really really really good at the math section. The English portions need some work too, but at least the math is something that's a bit more under my control in terms of studying

Ah, I studied only English

And I also consistently score lower in my math than English

4:09 PM
My math scores were. shuffles feet a bit perfect to start with.

Ofc, Miss Calc 3/ Linear Algebra :P
I'm going to study for both, don't get me wrong, but math is my primary focus as of now

essay as well?
I took the essay and... it did not go as planned

I'm taking the essay only because my school's offering it

I didn't even manage to pull off a 6/6/6. cries

Isn't that the highest score?

4:14 PM
8/8/8

But 8/8/8 is almost impossible, so I was shooting for a 6/6/6

Child of the devil, I see

hey I don't have 666 on Lit anymore

We all have been there at some point in our SE journies :P

@Deusovi @GarethMcCaughan This user is repeatedly posting puzzles from the Algebrica IQ test without attribution. See here (now deleted) and here.
I actually only realised after making my comments that this is an actual test that people pay to get certified to gain entrance to various societies, so it's not actually purely 'scoring rep', it's cheating on a test!!
Wow, I just used 'actual' a lot there...

we all have words that we use more often than strictly necessary
(in my case, "strictly necessary" is a common phrase of mine...)
Want to help me workshop the title for my meta question?

What's the theme of it?

current title: "Do we want math sub-tag excerpts to say that [mathematics] should also be used?"
Basically, should tags such as [geometry] have a line in the excerpt that says "Use with [mathematics]"
My current phrasing in the title seems a bit awkward to me

Hmmm
How about cut some words with "Should math sub-tag excerpts state that '[mathematics] should also be used'?"

9:36 PM
ah, much better

(First idea, spitballing here)
Two 'shoulds' though!

oh wait yeah
It's a fairly complicated, wordy idea to get across in a title

Though on reflection they don't read too badly

If you think of anything better in the next ~15 minutes, then ping me. I'll be posting it soon anyhow.

Sure thing
Worse than that, this is cheating on a test - it's not right or fair to get this community to pass it for you! — Stiv 1 min ago
I've gone stronger now that I realise what these IQ questions are intended for.
I'm stopping there though.

9:43 PM
gasps you have more hats than me, Stiv

Wha'?? Since when?

I had 12 before they recalculated some faulty triggers, now I have 10
You have 11
11 > 10
cries

I'm sure it's just a blip and you'll be back on top in no time :)

This meta post has been in planning for some time, but I sped it up a bit since there's a hat for starting a meta discussion
(2 answers and +2, I think?)
totally not cheating here

Haha! Sounds like you're IN THE GAME.

9:55 PM
No great title ideas in the interim, Stiv?

How about "Who dat gawn 'un mussed up oll the tayugs?"
(JOKE)

In that case I'll go ahead and post

(Just watched Forrest Gump)
Haha! Yeah, nothing else has struck me, sorry!

my mom loves that movie

Hadn't seen it for a looooong time. Way weird watching young Tom Hanks after some of his more recent ones.

9:59 PM
After reading the post, could you tell me your opinion? (here on in the comments on in an answer)

Oh! Interestingly, I approved both of those edits that were rejected overall. Hadn't noticed that.

So I guess I know your position

Q: Should math sub-tag excerpts state that [mathematics] should also be used?

bobbleWe have quite a few sub-tags of mathematics: geometry arithmetic probability combinatorics etc. etc. Now, these tags are useful. They allow filtering based on the specific type of mathematics involved. They are also all sub-tags. Puzzles involving geometry, for example, all also involve mathema...

I personally think the edits were fine. But I guess I hadn't actually twigged these were for the excerpts rather than the body. There's probably some discussion to be had over whether the excerpt specifically is the place to include this information. I guess that's the place people will see it when using the tag... (TBC)

@PuzzlingMeta ay, you're quick this time

10:05 PM
...but then things might end up getting cluttered quite quickly. (Similar to my meta-post recently about 'off-topic' directions...)
It seems wise to have it in the body at least. Let's gauge some other opinions about the excerpt stub in particular.

That's why I suggested the succinct "Use with [mathematics]"

Succinct is better, for sure.

A worthy meta question, you think?

For sure. How else do we get consensus? I think it's important to have chats about the 'housekeeping' on the site - we want to keep things useful, informative and tidy. All adds up to a good user experience.
@Deusovi @GarethMcCaughan Aside from the two I highlighted earlier and one Gareth found the other day, a search of the site finds only these two others from this specific IQ test.
I'm sure there'll be loads from other IQ tests hiding within our question bank - how do you keep on top of stopping people cheating like this?! (Pretty much rhetorical, that - I'm sure the answer is probably "You can't"...)

11:03 PM
We have just suspended one account and deleted some others for misbehaviours not unconnected to the IQ-test posting discussed above. We don't generally go into details about moderation actions, but in view of said discussion it seems worth mentioning that we were aware of the issue and have taken some action :-).

Good to know our mods are on top of things
Question for grid-deduction setters (and solvers!): I can add two clues to my Easy As LITS puzzle. They would give absolutely no information that cannot be trivially deduced using other clues, but would make the clue arrangement more pleasing. What would you do?

11:31 PM
nothing wrong with adding them, imo

11:41 PM
Agree with Deusovi

puzzle should be out later today then, with redundant clues added

@GarethMcCaughan Thanks :)

does a LITS puzzle qualify for the [polyomino] tag?

i probably wouldn't use it myself, because i usually think of polyomino puzzles being specifically about arrangement of a pre-specified bank
and LITS doesn't 'feel' that way to me when solving

11:56 PM
yeah, agreed

but that's just personal opinion, and it does have polyominoes in it - your call

just a sanity check here
