At this point in time, it's just going to be SE and SO. We love the SE sites and their vibrant designs and swag but the overhead of printing and storing the swag for all of the sites really caught up with us and it gets pretty expensive. I proudly wear my M&TV shirt on a regular basis and have various SE stickers all over my laptop but... sad to say, that's not something we can bring back. — Catija ♦2 hours ago
@Sciborg I think this is ENCOMPASSES (=surrounds ≈makes a big roundabout), from EN (England) COMPASS (North's neighborhood) EaSt (oddly, North's neighbor)
no worries, no worries :p i'm guessing "lost their head" is most likely a "minus first letter" indicator, but i can't think of any word that contains "ciborg", so perhaps it is more complex...
and 3-6 is an interesting pattern, hm
i would guess the definition is "feeling of disgust," since that seems to fit best

New user posted an answer basically saying "this puzzle is hard, also that other guy spoiler the answer for me". My comment was a welcome to the community, an explanation of how answers worked and why theirs wasn't one, an explanation of how spoilers work, and a second welcome.
The hope is that some of them will read the comment and try to become better users
If there's a specific reason you think that they may be "in conflict with a policy/guideline" or otherwise bad, then flag them and use that reason. Otherwise, don't worry about it.
M marbles are placed in N buckets which are arranged in a circle. One move consists of choosing a bucket, taking all the marbles within that bucket and placing them one by one in the next bucket in clockwise order.
Given two placements A and B of marbles in buckets, tell if we can reach B startin...
Hey Deusovi, I ended up not using it, but what would you say to "Thin Lizzy" cluing L in cryptic wordplay? I'm always looking for good rock and roll references.
i was trying to make a introduction -> induction clue where dropping trou "may lead to a shock" or something like that until i realized there's no "trou" in "introduction" in the first place
Can you crack the code?
8 6 4 1 6 - 3 numbers correct in the right position, and 1 number correct in the wrong position
8 6 0 1 4 - 4 numbers correct in the right position

A murderer was on trial facing the death penalty. The trial was confusing in many ways. There were four judges ... or maybe there were twenty four. That's confusing on it's own. The accused made a plea to be released. The judges rejected it. The really strange thing is that the judges invoked the...

Can you remind me who had a hit with this song? It's about time to listen to it again.
I am the protector during a fright.
But you are not going to find me in any sight.
I am the protector during a fight.
But you will find me a little heavier than light.
I am the protector during a flight.
But you will not find me flying like a kite.

An entry in Fortnightly Topic Challenge #45: Flags
In this cryptic crossword, there is something funny going on with the shaded squares. Lengths are not included with the clues. The final answer, which can be obtained by combining the shaded squares in an appropriate fashion, is the flag of some...
1) A composition-collab with my middle school band teacher 2) My own personal composition 3) Study my butt off for the SAT 4) Finish up my chain puzzle 5) Practice the trumpet like there's no tomorrow
Going in raw, I think I got a 1230? I've also taken 3 other practice SAT tests from Khan/College board
@bobble I was joking
I'm like 99% sure I'm not getting a 1600
My plan is basically to get really really really good at the math section. The English portions need some work too, but at least the math is something that's a bit more under my control in terms of studying
This number sequence has numbers rounded to the nearest tenth.
1, 2, 4.5, ?, 26, ?
Find the pattern and the answers to the question marks rounded to the nearest tenth.
Here's another one:
My prefix is Harry's son,
My suffix exchanged with o is a relative.
My infix is just two letters,
But reversed an example.
My whole is a topic,
which I really like (and everybody who read my profile knows it.)
If you give me a 5, I give you a 21.
If you give me a 6, I give you a 2.
If you give me a 7, I give you a 12.
If you give me a 10, I give you a 101.
What am I processing to get the result?

Hint 2
For instance,
banana, excess, giggit, voodoo, pullup, myrrhy
are six six-letter words that don’t share any letters with each other. This isn’t a heterogram puzzle: repeated letters within a single word are fine. Can anyone find a larger set, or a set of longer words?
Full disclosure: this list ma...
Winter Bash 2020 has started and the hats (and masks) are listed below.
As always, there are only two answers: one for the secret hats, and one for the regular hats. The secret hat list will be updated as we learn them.
Please, only edit the secret hat answer with definitive and correct triggers....
Since The last sequence I posted was solved, I will post this new sequence that the same friend gave me. You need to find what number goes instead of the question marks. Have fun.

@Deusovi @GarethMcCaughan This user is repeatedly posting puzzles from the Algebrica IQ test without attribution. See here (now deleted) and here.
I actually only realised after making my comments that this is an actual test that people pay to get certified to gain entrance to various societies, so it's not actually purely 'scoring rep', it's cheating on a test!!
We have quite a few sub-tags of mathematics:
geometry
arithmetic
probability
combinatorics
etc. etc.
Now, these tags are useful. They allow filtering based on the specific type of mathematics involved. They are also all sub-tags. Puzzles involving geometry, for example, all also involve mathema...
I personally think the edits were fine. But I guess I hadn't actually twigged these were for the excerpts rather than the body. There's probably some discussion to be had over whether the excerpt specifically is the place to include this information. I guess that's the place people will see it when using the tag... (TBC)
For sure. How else do we get consensus? I think it's important to have chats about the 'housekeeping' on the site - we want to keep things useful, informative and tidy. All adds up to a good user experience.
@Deusovi @GarethMcCaughan Aside from the two I highlighted earlier and one Gareth found the other day, a search of the site finds only thesetwo others from this specific IQ test.
I'm sure there'll be loads from other IQ tests hiding within our question bank - how do you keep on top of stopping people cheating like this?! (Pretty much rhetorical, that - I'm sure the answer is probably "You can't"...)
We have just suspended one account and deleted some others for misbehaviours not unconnected to the IQ-test posting discussed above. We don't generally go into details about moderation actions, but in view of said discussion it seems worth mentioning that we were aware of the issue and have taken some action :-).
Question for grid-deduction setters (and solvers!): I can add two clues to my Easy As LITS puzzle. They would give absolutely no information that cannot be trivially deduced using other clues, but would make the clue arrangement more pleasing. What would you do?
