To everyone who reads this: should the following question be closed for being too broad/inviting speculative answers?

Q: Remove last letter 4 times, get a real word each time, starting word is a car model

BombBurperThe best I tried so far: Ford Explorer Explore Explor - not real Explo - not real Expl - not real

I wrote a comment saying that it fit the definition of an open-ended question as per the meta consensus, but now I'm not sure anymore

agree, there are multiple possible answers and no way to judge which is the correct one

what's the normal way to treat titles starting with articles in crosswords? the article can usually be omitted, no?
e.g. ALCHEMIST for The Alchemist
intuitively it would seem fine to have BEATLES for The Beatles, but WHO for The Who would look weird
which i guess is because removing "the" from The Who actually changes the meaning

@Sphinx Is this really a puzzle?

usually, I see "With 'the', ..."
I don't think you can generally remove articles

Hm. I'm not so sure that just "Alchemist" is okay. The title is "The Alchemist". I think it's okay to omit the article if the context in the phrase requires it, e.g. as in "Coelho's 'Alchemist'", but otherwise I'd say the article should be there.

makes sense

wanted to use The Idiot for IDIOT since it fits the grid and i didn't really want to use the actual meaning... i think i'll just change the grid to allow for another word

Q: How did these grassy hillsides become unevenly terraced?

FlanManIn Colombia, many grassy hillsides are unevenly terraced, like in the photo below. How did this happen? This terracing can also occur on hillsides that never had these palm trees on them. It probably also occurs outside of Colombia, under the right conditions. I think I know the answer, just fr...

@GarethMcCaughan your asking about my knot got me interested in you so I just looked you up in the math genealogy site and found that you're a packing-and-covering guy, and Bollobas's grandson. I'm a three-dimensional-manifold guy, myself -- or was (I haven't looked at topology since I got my degree) -- and Hatcher's grandson. Nice to meet you.

Q: What's the next pattern in the sequence?

Michael Maythere. I came across this puzzle in a primary school booklet for selective high school exams in Australia. Please help me find out the next pattern to appear in the sequence, as shown in the picture below. Thank you very much!

8:25 PM
@msh210 Yup, Bollobas -> Carne -> me. Substantial degeneration with each generation, alas :-). I've been out of the pure maths biz for a long time, though.
Of course in some sense we were both picking up the crumbs from under Thurston's table.
Incidentally, surely it's most improper to thank the Almighty at the start of a thesis about low-dimensional topology: it's been known since Kronecker that he's only interested in number theory.

@GarethMcCaughan Well, didn't he write The Book? That has the most elegant proofs in every branch of math.
@GarethMcCaughan Certainly I was. I don't know enough about your area.
On another topic, I really thought this cccc would go much faster than it has.

Which I guess goes to show nothing more than that I'm not a good judge of my cryptic clues' difficulty.

Circle packing was originally a thing Thurston cooked up with the idea that it might lead to a useful attack on the geometrization conjecture. So far as I know, nothing ever came of that.
I think if you appeal to the Book then you're required to call him the Supreme Fascist rather than the Almighty, which I suspect you would not find agreeable :-).
The C4 clue looks very solvable, but so far what seem to me the obvious ways in haven't led anywhere useful.
