Q: Just Read My Lips

kedarguru Do you know the game I play? I think that it's quite fun. Find the rules that bind it, and you just might find the one. This puzzle's for lovers once kissing - and a missing thing used for things missing.

Very long day today, I'm afraid, and a lot of trouble trying to make a clue that I really liked work (which I still haven't, so that one's saved for later if I ever can) but I should have one now
CCCC: "Way too hard!" ends piercing synopsis; in review, antagonist trashes piece of s*** acronym and self-reference (5 8)

5:16 AM
Hm. I thought I had it based on wordplay, but it doesn't seem to fit the def.

@ManyPinkHats Would you care to clarify whether we should pretend that the "s***" in your clue is actually the obvious word (merely censored for the sake of the more sensitive readers of this forum) or whether we should consider the actual clue to be exactly as given? (Of course you might not care to clarify, in which case fair enough.)

It is the obvious word, censored for the sensitive

@ManyPinkHats I wanted to ask you about your Kakuro-like puzzle. I think you said you were making it for some other purpose, and then realized it would be a fit for a puzzle here. Do you make puzzles like that for a publication or website or anything?

I tried making and posting puzzles on a personal website once a week, but I've since stopped since I couldn't keep it up with my workload; I've still got the puzzles I made on my computer though, and the intent to remake some of them and probably repost here
The KenKen/Mathdoku puzzle you solved was one of a quartet that was Puzzle #8, hence all the 8 clues. The other three were just standard KenKen puzzles though; no second layer about placing a final clue

I knew it wasn't Kakuro, but I forgot the name. I'm working on similar things, and it's really hard to spend enough time on that along with my actual work.
Do you make them entirely by hand?

3:42 PM
when do fortnightly challenges start?

The logic puzzles, yes. I've also tried to make some crossword puzzles with the help of wordlists and programs like Qxw, but I haven't remade any of them yet

Anyway, end of this week is probably a good time to call the votes, and it looks like the previous FTCs were Monday-Monday, so maybe Monday the 28th?

4:21 PM
@EricTressler No, I've got only loose ends that don't tie up. I probably have the acronym. I don't know what the synopsis or the antagonist are and I don't really know what to apply the "in review", which I think is a reversal indicator, to. And I don't know whether "trashes" is an anagrind or an idniactor to remove the letters of the acronym from the antagonist. So, yeah, I'm drawing a lot of blanks here.
But shortly after the C4 was posted, you said that you had the wordplay worked out, but it didn't fit the def. Care to share your early thoughts?

@MOehm Sure
So I originally thought it was "op[-pos]ition", and if we also remove self-reference (in case "self-reference" is not the def.), then we could remove "op", or "i", or both. Lots of options.
Now I think it's more likely to be "op[-pos]er", and also backward (in review).
For the first half, the only sense I could make out of it is "Way too hard!" ends == "wd", and that piercing synopsis might be "cro(wd) p______"
"crowd pleasers" or something could be the answer if it's &lit (subtle hint with the "!"?), but that doesn't fit with the stuff about "opposer".

I think it might be an &lit; with the solution being EARLY ADOPTION
Can't quite figure out all the wordplay, though.

well, you have "op[-pos][-i]tion"; I also played with that, but I didn't come up with "early".
And after trying "___ contained in synopsis" + "____ contained in review", I convinced myself that "in review" must be a reversal indicator.

So the quotations marks indicate a block from which to take the ends. Hm. I considered St(reet) + _o _d, reversed or not, but to no avail.

Yes, I was looking at _y _o _d, but that doesn't seem to go anywhere either.

4:34 PM
I don't know, but there's nothing I could find to do with "YOD", and very little with "WTH"

Trying to find ways to make it fit with EARLY. What if "Way too hard!" ends is just ARD?
Then that "pierces" the letters E__LYA_ + OPTION.
Not sure how to get ELYA from "synopsis", though.

That's plausible (the part about "ARD"), but I don't know how you handle the rest either. I also had an idea that it might be something like "heavy emotions"

How do you get "emotions", though? I thought the last part boiled down to OPTION?

Removing self-reference lets us remove the "op" and either or both "i"s.

4:42 PM
But I don't know; I had all of these ideas last night, and they haven't panned out for me since then. None of the phrases we've said really seem to capture the entire clue anyway, if it really is &lit. It should specifically be about a puzzle (too hard, acronym, self-reference).
It's probably "____ cryptics" or something.
Or "dirty wordplay"

We haven't found anything suitable for the synopsis yet. And since the opposition seems to forward, the synopsis is probably reversed.

@MOehm earlier, I suggested "crop" for synopsis.
but you might be right, I didn't spend much time trying to reverse the first part of the clue. And a crop would be more of an excerpt than a summary.

5:07 PM
I'll let this rest for a while. I have the feeling I'm not going anywhere with this.

Me too
