Q: How many boxes do you see?

SummerMy professor gave us this puzzle at the beginning of the semester but would not reveal the answer: There is only one question: How many boxes do you see? We were not given any other information and it has been bothering me for the past few months. Help will be appreciated. Thank you!

4:36 AM
@Sphinx I'm pretty sure this is a duplicate, but I can't find it.

4:56 AM
The puzzle would be so much better if the boxes were 3D as I originally thought

...But the answer would be zero then, no?

I searched for a dupe but found none
But seems like a common puzzle

Yeah, I've been looking. I'm positive that I've seen it here.

I haven't even been here long and I feel like I've seen it

@Deusovi exactly what I said
Amusingly (...annoyingly!), I've now counted it wrong twice

5:09 AM
Heh.

yes, the answer would be zero
but you could conceivably make a drawing in which it would not be
I just think those "how many squares" puzzles are just painstaking counting

Agreed
(I don't particularly think "how many 3D boxes" would be much better)

Are we worried that rand al'thor has vanished? He's normally pretty regularly active and I don't remember (though may well have missed) him saying he'd be off for a while.

Oh, he was online recently on sff

Ah, so he was. Ok then - good, I was just concerned something amiss was keeping him from being able to log in

He probably just has to catch up with everything that happened...

@BeastlyGerbil Final!
May 17 at 19:51, by Techidiot
MI vs KKR and MI vs RPS and MI wins (Prediction)

looks that way!
MI destroyed kkr

Yeah. They did.
The same way RPS did with MI.
But it could be a turn around this time.
May be they lost to RPS just to get them into the finals :p

Heh, you should have placed a bet on that prediction a while ago. Could have won big :P

Lol. There is a city here in India, which is said to be the worlds biggest betting place.
They bet on anything starting from whether it will rain or not, elections, sports, gold prices etc.

1 hour later…
1:38 PM
@Techidiot which city is it?

@manshu A small city in Rajasthan. Not much known, but had a documentary a while ago - Phalodi
It's called Matka Gambling
Satta :)

oh...It's just probably 250 km from my city. Just checked

Yeah. It's between Jaisalmer and Bikaner. 2 and half hrs from Jodhpur

Where were you from again? Udaipur or Jodhpur?

I come from Phalodi, my dad's family and Jodhpur, mom's family. But, I live in Pune

1:43 PM
Oh. That's why you have so good prediction skills ;p

Lol. :P

My mom and dad are from Jaipur so I reside in Jaipur :p

I like the pink city. It has developed a lot in past few years. I've some relatives there.

Yeah. The new thing is the metro. Even though it's quite late but its management is great.

Yeah, the metro as well. Right
It's becoming too difficult to find sand dumes in Raj now
I remember seeing them almost in every city, but now, you have to go deep into the villages to find them

1:47 PM
You can find some near Bikaner I think.
I haven't been to many cities (yet).

Bikaner has developed as well.. Jaisalmer has it.

Jaisalmer is gonna have it for a long time. That's one of the special things in Jaisalmer.

Jaisalmer has a sand dumes festival every year to attract tourists..Where they keep folk dance, camping etc
I visit Rj almost every year and take a trip around places

I have never seen any Rajasthani folk dance yet.

Oh, that's surprising? How come? :p

1:50 PM
I am everyday in here but never get out of my city, ever.

Haven't you paid a visit to Chowki Dhani kind of place?

no ._.

Oh, I like traveling. But yes, if you live closer to something, you hardly hang around
But, its high time, you take a tour. Before everything goes digital :p
My bucket list has Bhangarh Fort as an entry..

I like to travel too...but I think my parents don't. So they don't let me travel too.

If you know it ;)

1:52 PM
My friend was asking to go Bhangad too. But my mom said no for a car trip.

Lol. Parents wont allow you to travel to that place I guess.
It's restricted after evening.

Haha...Yes, probably car trip is just a cover for their fear of ghosts.
(brb)

Sure

2:09 PM
Bhangarh story is something like a sage burned the whole place down.
Do you believe in ghosts though?

I belong to Rajasthan, so, yes ;)

haha. Now I doubt if I belong to Rajasthan.

I've had some experiences myself. So, I do believe there are some external forces
@manshu You do belong, it's just that, you haven't explored much yet

:o

You need to pay visit to some havelis out there.
Someday, visit Phalodi :)

2:12 PM
You lived in Phalodi or Jodhpur in your childhood?

As I said, places like Jaipur have developed a lot and you won't find the heritage stuff there apart from some sculptures and tourist places
I've live in Phalodi more than Jodhpur

I will visit someday (when my parents will not disallow me)

And lived in more smaller villages like Malar, Khichen, Baap, Ramdevra etc
You haven't even heard of the stories? From dada/dadi/nana/nani?

Oh. You have surely have explored many places.

They can tell you a few if you ask :) (In case they have spent some time in the old RJ)

2:14 PM
They tried and at that time I believed them. But then I took science in 11th standard

Well, science can't define it. It's just the experiences you have
Which makes the difference
I'm a science guy as well. :)

It will be very hard to believe I guess, until I experience them.

Yes. It is. I never believed until I experienced it. I didn't believe until a few years back..

What happened at that time?

But I've sure heard a lot of stories. A lot of them..
I can tell you if you are interested to know

2:17 PM
I am very interested.

But, you will need to wait a little. I will be making some rotis :p

haha. Best of Luck. I hope they will be round :p

IPL starts in 12 minutes, so need to wrap my dinner preparation asap
Lol. Yeah. I've been cooking since too long now ;)
Thanks

:D

2:59 PM
Hey @manshu

hey

So, I can tell you the story

Ooh, story?

I am eager to hear.
@Mithrandir Not just a story. A horror story.

Okay.. So, it was 5 years back when we visited RJ.

3:00 PM
@manshu awesome

My uncle passed away in quite an early age..
After his death, a lot of relatives saw him in dreams, or felt that he was around in difficult times
So, they all decided to built a temple in his memory
Which if you are aware, is quite an old tradition in India
So, we visited RJ, for the inauguration of the temple..

I am not aware of this thing.

So, we had this big pooja in a village called Malar(the birth place of my uncle)
After the pooja there was a Jagran
A lot of people visited for the function.. including the people living nearby
My uncle grew up in Maharashtra so he was good with Marathi language
And he used to call my dad as Bhau
It was around mid-night when one of the person from that village suddenly stood up
And started chanting something..
There had been times in my life when I had seen similar incidents of people getting possesed
But, I never believed..

I too have seen many.

(election voting stats posted)

3:06 PM
And, I was with the same thought in my mind, that the person was probably acting

Exactly. That's what I think

Probably catching some attention or just following the ritual that someone should get possessed in these kind of ocassions
So, I ignored
But..
The man suddenly started calling out names
Like, he started calling my dad as Bhau and my aunts(Bua) as didi(sister)
Even then I was not quite sure
But then, he started speaking Marathi
Which caught my attention..And I literally got goose bumps
I was shocked to see all that happening..
Well, there was nothing like flying things, glowing eyes or unusual sounds..
But, it was not something you can oppose.

Did you know that person who stood up?

The person was a man living nearby..He belonged to the same village
And a truly Marwari

._.
I probably can't go to any rituals from now on.
I have heard that these kinds of things happen only to some people.

3:13 PM
This is one of many, there was a time when I spent a night at in a haveli called Dundiyo ki Haweli
Not known to many, but its in Phalodi as well.

I have heard this name.

It happens to people who have enough strength to handle that kind of force
The person possessed needs to be stronger.

Yeah. I have heard the same.
I have seen some people being possessed by Bhairu ji (another deity if you've heard about them)

Dogs/kids sense them easily.

yeah. Kids cry when they are around.

3:15 PM
Oh yes. I've done quite research on it and have came across this name quite many times

Bhairu ji is my family deity.

I've been a part of Ouija board as well. While that didn't went quite well, but I almost had some experience with that
Oh..

My grandmother once told me that Bhairuji once saved my grandfather from a witch (chudail) when he was coming home at mid night.
She said that there was some light which was following him who is supposed to be Bhairu ji.

I've heard similar stories.
Have you heard about Om Banna?
It's a small village near Pali
It has a temple of a bike.

But the most famous story I've come across is that once our neighbour (our enemy at that time and still) was doing some black magic for the bad health of my family members.
He was beaten by stones from somewhere while he was doing it

3:20 PM
Black magic is a different story.. It has it's own stories..
RJ is about ghosts, if you want to know about Black Magic, there is a big tribe called Aghori Sadhus
Who practice Aghori Vidhya
Complete, dark black magic!

It is the only one I've heard and probably the favorite at my home.
gulp

The Aghoris have been documented by Discover/Nat Geo as well
They follow the black magic with a Human Skull
They are believed to be cannibals

The black magic will serve them well if they use their own skull. :p

Hehe.. If you are interested, there are many videos on youtube. (But, I recommend not to watch if you are not ready)

I'm almost 20 and probably ready :p
I'll try and search about Om Banna and Aghori Vidhya

3:41 PM
Looks like my prediction is going down @manshu @BeastlyGerbil :p

Prediction is affected by you living in that city :p

4:00 PM
Haha.. :D Obviously, my heart wants Pune to win

I was surprised by the amount of text, thought there was some interesting stuff to catch up on, but it was a lot of cricket talk and stuff :P
GAmen anyway

GameN .. Why not, it's a final! :)

4:39 PM
Hah...you have win-win in both the cases

Yes, we call it Vada Pav vs Misal Pav here in Maharashtra :p

I once ate Vada Pav. I vomitted 3 times :/
never ate again

Poor manshu

Oh. Misal Pav is Pav Bhaaji. I love it

Lol. What? I am pretty sure, the one who made it doesn't know how to :)

4:43 PM
Yes. I will try with someone having better cooking skills.

Try it in Maharashtra. I do not trust any other place for Vada pav :p

That would be the most expensive Vada pav for me :p

@Tech yep RPS should win easy

I am watching on hotstar. Please no latest updates :/ :p
hotstar is off by 5 minutes

Sid
Hm. I haven't traveled in years. The last time I traveled far was 4 years back.
To J&K. Fascinating place.

4:54 PM
I must have travelled 3 or 4 years ago. To Indore. For someone's marriage

@manshu wow hotstar must be off by more than that. RPS have already won... (JK :P)

Sid
@beastly today's an important game or something?

Its the final

Sid
Whaaa?

so yeah, just the biggest and most important game of the tournament, yeah :P

Sid
5:01 PM
I am heading to watch it.

@Sid It's turning out to be most boring match and most boring final ever :p
@manshu True. But, you can't get a better Dal Baati anywhere other than RJ :)

I am not interested in Daal or Baati. I am interested in Choorma. :p

lol. Ditto!

This reminded me that there was a Besan ka Laddu in the kitchen.

lol. Go grab it. :D

5:09 PM
Got it. Gonna eat now. You jealous? :p

I miss home. :p
Anyway, dinner waiting for me
Cya

Sid
I miss home too. Though, now that mom is here, I don't miss it much. Anyway, Just one excruciating week more..

Have lots of laddus on your next visit.
Bon appetite
@sid where are you now

Sid
300km away from home. In a rented house to complete high school(11th and 12th grade were not available in my hometown)

It must be your 11th then.
Which subject did you opt?

Sid
5:40 PM
12th completed this year. PCMB

This final is actually getting close
12 an over now

6:00 PM
Very close. RPS did a bad job. should have ended it a few overs back

Sid
MI going to win it.

Hehe
One more wicket and MI wins
Else Pune's game

you sure?
19 off 8 is a lot
okay scrap that

hey, have you guys watched "sarabhai vs sarabhai - 2" yet?

@manshu Not yet. But planning to.

6:04 PM
That was a great episode.
(got distracted from the match)

11 off the last over
Gonna be close. Maybe a few run outs

Bumrah should have bowled the last one.. Not sure why he was given 18th over

you bowl your best over for the penultimate to put pressure on in the last

Pune needed 13 to win off the last over in their first meeting with Mumbai this season. Remember that game? Smith finished it off.

out. 7 off 4

6:08 PM
@BeastlyGerbil But Mitchell is a good bowler but not good enough to bowl the last over

I agree
he has got a wicket though
ooooh MI I think have won now

Sid
He's got the big guy.

its down to dhoni
mitchell on a hat trick too

Lol. What a match
:p

hmm not dhoni then

Sid
6:12 PM
Dhoni is out apparently.

oh.
missed that
the 17 y/o to win it :P
super over possible too

Sid
Winners by 1 run

there you go @tech your prediction was correct

Sid
Egoa!!!

Yeeaaahh ! :D
Mitch should be MoM
Or may be Pandya for those crucial runs

6:16 PM
1 hour ago, by Techidiot
@Sid It's turning out to be most boring match and most boring final ever :p
hmmmm.....

But Mitch looks the man to me.
As they say "Any cookie can crumble till the last ball is bowled"

I think anyone who ever said that is probably locked up right now :P

A good end to the IPL. But I am hating RPS for that performance. What were they doing all this while? Test cricket?
I mean they had 9 wickets in hand.. Disappointing play.. Finals need a little bit of aggression which came at the ens
I mean they had 9 wickets in hand.. Disappointing play.. Finals need a little bit of aggression which came at the end from Smith. But it was too late until then

saying things twice emphasises the point :P

Sid
The Pune guy is venting his anger.

6:20 PM
Lol. No idea how that happened
:p

@sid you mean smith ?

Sid
hm?

'the pune guy'

@Sid I knew MI was going to win, but didn't expected RPS to do that bad with bat. But nice game, cricket wins ;)

Sid
@Beastly that was a reference to Tech.

6:22 PM
@BeastlyGerbil I am from Pune city :p

oh right :P

Haha

The Predictor won :p

Yay!!
Vada Pav :p

2 hours ago, by Techidiot
Haha.. :D Obviously, my heart wants Pune to win
But heart lost.

6:25 PM
Oh yeah. That venting was for the same reason ;)

oh.
What a match that was (even though I didn't even watch 10 overs out of those 40)!!!

Haha.. TBH, the match was boring until last 7 odd overs..

I saw last two overs in Pune's inning and last 5 overs in MI's inning

Nice. The best ones :) When MI survived and RPS drowned

When I entered this chat half an hour ago I found that match is going great. I Everyone was expecting RPS to win before that.
hah. The IPL days are finished. Now this chat will be less cricket-y. :(

6:33 PM
Bc match fix hai...last over tak zabardasti khinch laaye - @manshu This tweet :p

Sid
In other news, Chelsea have won the premier league!
@Tech Don't think that is a safe comment here...

haha...That tweet is true though.

@Sid Yeah. Chelsea did fantastic job this season
@Sid BC is also my initials :p

Sid
Well, I know that already.

He he..

6:37 PM
Mine are PK. Even though it's not funny on their own but sometimes my friends say "Lo, aa gaya PK"

Haha.. Really?

yes :D

So you are the original PK :D

Sid
PK was the name of that controversial movie...

Nice.

6:38 PM
haha.

I thought your name was Manshu. So I guess that's a pet name

Yes. It doesn't mean anything though.

Sid
I like the name Manshu from a Puzzling context

I like it from every context :p

Manshu is uncommon for me.. Himanshu is quite common
Anyway, will sign off.. @manshu Champions trophy is next. :p So the show will go on

6:42 PM
Yes. My older brother's name is Anshu. My name started from M according to astrology so my name is Manshu
oh.
Good Night.

Sid
Gareth has given a very nice suggestion to downvote his answers. I would do that. Except, it would cost me rep.

Night all
Also, I guess @BeastlyGerbil might also watch Eng vs SA before the champs trophy.

Sid
If only, he had posted some questions...

I love it when few people talk of their interest in a public chat room and others just think "What are you talking about?" :p

Sid
Ah, @Mith How does the election work again? How are Round 2 votes tallied, for instance.
@Manshu I always get that feeling when humn is around. :P

6:46 PM
Sometimes even I also feel like that with him in this room. But we chat quite nice in the other room.

I never quite remember - let's check the meta post.

6:58 PM
@Sid if you read that comment in its full context (which goes back a ways from the comment itself) it came out of me saying I was serial downvoting Gareth to cost him enough rep to drop his election score :)

@Techidiot don't bother guessing, of course I am :P

There's a reasonably good description of Meek STV on OpaVote here

7:18 PM
