Q: Rotate corners without affecting bottom and middle layers (3x3)

theman25Is it possible to have an algorithm that can rotate top layer corners on the 3x3. Similar to what R' D' R D does except it is incapable of doing it when more than one of the bottom layer corners is not oriented correctly. Is there an algorithm out there that will work for this?

@boboquack I see what you did there.

The Galactic Puzzle Hunt is starting in one week!

Woo
Is this the first year?

Yep.

oh

Oh, that reminds me - would "What puzzling events are going on right now" be an acceptable question for the site? I don't think it really fits on main or meta, so I'm not sure, but meta is a bit looser with the strict Q&A rules.
I'm not really sure myself, to be honest, so I'm asking you all what you think.

methinks it'd be fine
I saw a "What are the best online math forums?" question on meta.math.se some time ago
this one:

Q: What is a good forum for math discussion?

xihocipiThis forum is inadequate for my needs, because the question/answer format is too restrictive. I need an online forum were I can make questions, and discuss the answers. I want to contact people with good math level. I'm not a student, but not a mathematician either, so I may make naive question...

It's somewhat different, but if this is acceptable, why not puzzling events?
BTW, is there something one can do about offensive comments in someone's About me?

5:17 AM
Oh huh. Interesting.
Flag it and I'll look into it.
(Or maybe Em or GPR will get it first if they happen to catch it.)

not on Puzzling
on math.se

Flag it and I'll the math mods will look into it.
(Just flag one of the user's posts.)

@Deusovi Would've fallen afoul of the old "too localised" close reason.. but that reason doesn't exist any more. That being said, I'm not sure it fits either for the same reason - it would rapidly get out of date.

@Alconja Right, the idea is that it would be a meta post that's regularly updated, similar to the community ads and the topic challenge suggestions.

I guess the question is, would it? If so, by whom, and what counts as a valid event?

5:21 AM
I mean, I'd update it. (And ideally other people might too.) And a valid event would be anything involving puzzles? I'm not sure what would really be "on the fence" with respect to validity.
The answers would just be descriptions of events coming up in the next (say) few months, plus links and information about accessibility and time. (Maybe we could even have PSE 'solving parties' for old online puzzle hunts.)
Then after the events, we could delete the answers.
Hey Sp!

Hey
Not sure how accurate/how much they update

yeah, it's not always updated
plus some of the events are specific to certain locations

tbh I do like some more puzzle hunt activity on PSE (as you can probably tell)

@Deusovi I guess my concern is that it would be too random as to what was included and when it gets updated, etc to be of much value. But that's just, like, my opinion, man.

Not sure where to stick a calendar though, nowhere really fits well

5:31 AM
@Alconja Ideally, it'd be updated whenever people learned about the events and wanted to tell the rest of us about them. (Of course, it's almost certainly not going to work out ideally. The main goal is to spread information about upcoming hunts (and maybe other puzzly events) and potentially get more people solving.)
You may be right that it wouldn't be a a good fit though.

If the events you're talking about are global/online, and are limited in number, you could just pin them in chat or something...

Can't we make a meta question about what the community thinks on this?

5:47 AM
Of course we can. My opinion is but one, and it's not an overly strong one anyway.
On a strict policy level, it doesn't fit the current definitions of on-topic for either meta or main, but there are other posts already that don't fit those definitions either, that still have value and community acceptance (eg. the "list of useful tools" thread on meta), so there's no reason why this can't fall into the same bucket too.

user61230
Just because it doesn't fit the strict definitions doesn't mean we can't do it, if we want it and it's a good idea.

user61230
Community wiki questions exist, for example, to be shared community-editable resources, when strict Q&A isn't as appropriate.

Q: Sudoku board position hint

BlindyAs the title says, I'd like a hint (and an explanation why it is so) for the puzzle position in the attached image. I think I'm missing something really obvious but I can't figure it out. Again though, I'd like the reasoning too, I can just look up the solution if that's what I wanted to do.

@Alconja Nice!

A very hard one, I've got to say. So feeling good about solving it (how far we've come since these C4s started). ...of course that's assuming it is correct. :P

It has to be.

I gotta go to a meeting in a few, so I'm going to agree, assume it's correct, and post another one in case I don't make it back any time soon.
