1:00 PM
Anyone know sign language?

@BeastlyGerbil Yeah, that'll be good

Just posted my seasonal riddle. Have fun.

Or you can just search 'sign language alphabet' on googl :P

@Randal'Thor WHat would Tam think of you changing your name like that?

@Mithrandir He's my father. It was just a fever dream.
Anyway, I'm off. Later, all.

1:02 PM
@BeastlyGerbil ah, got it

Yay! Final image now...

unfortunately He Who Cannot Be Named has spoiled it for me

yeah he spoiled the final bit. It was supposed to be the fun bit but no....

1:04 PM
:P

(Oneboxes are fun)

If someone wants to post the final answer I can do a community wiki

Did I get it too? I just updated my answer, didn't see that @Volatility ninja'd me one more time

Ah okay. You weren't here when supposedly rot 1 BL ruined it where you? So you can still solve it

oh hah, didn't realise Rubio's CM was a rot2 as well

1:08 PM
Okay suspicions confirmed

@BeastlyGerbil You mean, me?

Q: A self-unsure portrait

humn The portrait cannot tell whether fragment X or Y belongs at the ? question mark.   Can you? How is it a “self-portrait”? Let’s say this painting is encountered amid the shadows of Mortin Myes’ Second Cryptic Gallery but, despite its caption, is not a likeness of the artist. The maze-lik...

Q: Puzzling SE in 2017

rand al'thorNow twenty sixteen has faded away: A terrible year, I really must say. People dying, relationships up messed, Elections and politics dividing the West. I turn over on my side, For all is upside down. I piss again and again, But really, why bother? Just west of north, I exist, but backwar...

I'm a bit lost. I saw the conversation in TSL (here) that someone wasted a puzzle
But it happened in another room, right?

@IAmInPLS BG and Mithrandir planned a puzzle in another chat. Some... other user... saw it and posted the solution soon after the puzzle was posted, spoiling it for everyone else.

Heya Deusovi, sorrh

1:10 PM
@Deusovi Damn, what a bad behavior...

*sorry for being a bit of a bummer on SUMS

You don't need to apologize! We all kinda gave up.
And I think you helped out a lot c:

What's the difficulty level/approachability of SUMS compared to other hunts?

It's harder than most.

I'm not even sure what other ones there are apart from MIT and mezzacotta

1:12 PM
@Deusovi that's encouraging

@IAmInPLS yes you ::P

Unfortunately, this riddle doesn't make any sense for me :-)

There's MUMS (Melbourne University), Panda (a bimonthly / semimonthly (every two months) online magazine with a minihunt in every issue), and various other one-time things.
The MIT Mystery Hunt is the big one though.

@Mods: Question. If somebody posts a Clue that I didn't give them permission for, which most likely has the wrong answer, what happens to it? Can I flag it for deletion? (This is all hypothetical.)

Hm... The mod team would probably have to discuss what to do with that.

1:15 PM
It would be very downvoted anyway...

It technically wouldn't be breaking any rules, so it's possible that we wouldn't delete it.

Anyway, I'm off to bed now. G'night!

@Volatility Night!

It could possibly create confusion with my final metapuzzle, like if people go to the wrong clue 75.

But the community would probably be at least mildly annoyed given that that's "your" series.

1:16 PM
(No there are not that many puzzles :P)

You could post links in your final metapuzzle.

@IAmInPLS similar

Okay, thanks.

There are 39, right? :P

Yep, but that's a secret.
...Oh wait.

1:17 PM
@BeastlyGerbil Yeqs, was looking for something like this! Because I was on this link like an hour ago, I was hesitating to nominate it for the quarterly best of ^^

Has anybody else read them?

Yeah, a lot of people.

I meant on this site :P

I havent but I know them so....

Plus, googling the list of answers would bring it up.

1:18 PM
As we found out in one of them, don't remember which

@IAmInPLS got it yet? :P

@BeastlyGerbil mace?

But why this word? I may have the wrong translation in my language :-P you're talking about a weapon, right?

No the herb (I think) Mithrandir gave it to me.

1:23 PM
Oooh yeah it's a spice, right?

yeah derived fro nutmeg
I'll start a com wiki

Alright, I'll edit my answer
What is it for the last line?

lats letters

I'm so dumb sometimes, if not everytime
@Randal'Thor Please forgive the unknown down-voter, his soul is lost already. Take my upvote to counter-balance :-P

1:35 PM
Speaking of the guy who wasted your puzzle, I thought he was suspended already. He created another account?

Oh my god, Voldemort is Ralph Fiennes?
I can't believe I didn't know that before.

@Randal'Thor Is there wordplay involved?

@Mithrandir I'm up for a clue at some point in the future!
These seem like good fun

Thanks, I'll ping you at some point. And ask Rand to set up a private room :)

There are so many questions today on PSE!

got first two rebuses

Q: Cryptic Rebuses at the Zoo

SilenusLet me remind you, in case you haven’t read my previous puzzle, that a cryptic rebus is a rebus that has the form of a cryptic clue. That is to say, there are two parts to a cryptic rebus: a definition of the answer a subsidiary indicator of the answer. A definition can take the form of a pic...

2:02 PM
Yeah, lots of questions today!
I picked a bad time to post a riddle, those usually fall through the cracks.
I'm not American, what state is in no, 7?
Is it Massachusetts?

yes

Got 4, I think
Oops silly me I forgot to name the breed properly, edited now
Cool, got rid of my answer now
No point having duplicates
I may as well just tell you in chat if I get any more
@Rubio are you sure your current answer for 3 is a common phrase?

I think it has something to do with a cow?
Since we are looking for animal names

It's not really an answer actually heh
I didn't mean to save it

2:18 PM
There is now a link to the list of all of the Clues in my profile.

1 hour later…
3:19 PM
Hmm the one reason why I don't like pattern puzzles
Is that there are always tons of correct solutions unintended by the author.

Jim
Hello TSL

@Jim Hello!

hey Jim

Hiya Jim

Hey Jim

3:33 PM
He's dead, Jim.

Jim
@Mithrandir saved the best for last
So there's a 2 word CCCC?

Yep!

Jim
is that by definition a double def?

@Jim not necessarily
Cryptics are weird

Jim
like 92%

3:41 PM
@TheGreatEscaper Depends on the puzzle I think, but the one you're talking about is pretty vague, indeed
Plus, it's inspired from a very recent puzzle, which is not always a good idea

I'm really not sure whether I can be bothered explaining mod division.
Anyhow I'm not going to edit that answer/comment anymore, I think it's a sufficient explanation

Jim
Who? What?

Q: Who am I to balance nothing?

EnigmaIf I stand up, I am balancing nothing. If I split in the middle, my left would phonetically talk like a parrot, and my right would be lifted as a cube. If I lie down, I can wait forever. What am I?

It's a question with an answer I thought was obvious but apparently doesn't make sense to the person who wrote it.

@Jim Still not necessarily that high a percentage because of &lits - also you could get down to a one word clue if you really wanted :P

Jim
@SP3000 hmmm ok. But this isn't an &lit, right?

Well I thought you mean two word clues in general, as opposed to two word clues not ending in ! :P

Jim
I meant specifically this one
the probability that it's a double def

4:05 PM
Oh right, then yeah nvm. Ignore me :)

Jim
I really need to be independently wealthy so I can stop having a job and fully devote myself to PSE
Consider it my New Years resolution

Wise talk

Jim
Much more passionate about puzzling than data-ing

I'm currently paid to browse PSE
(since I asked for work as i was done, but they didn't give me any)

Jim
@IAmInPLS I'm probably 50/50
@IAmInPLS what do you do?

4:13 PM
@Jim Yeah, about the same
Engineering
In lighting
Software in fact
but for lighting design

Jim
@IAmInPLS my company (Proto Labs) makes a lot of parts for engineers in the lighting industry

@Jim Wait, are you doing 3D printing?

...the joys of being a student... hobbies and side interests are practically 90% of my life.

@TheGreatEscaper I was a student 1 and a half year ago :-)

Sid
@TheGreatEscaper Same here.. Except it is a whole lot less than 90%

4:16 PM
@Sid what year are you in?

Jim
@IAmInPLS That's just part of it. We do 3D, CNC Machining and Injection Molding

Anyhow, the 90% is just right now, as I'm halfway through my summer holidays.

Sid
@TheGreatEscaper High School final year. (Grade 12)

Jim
@TheGreatEscaper yes, you need to enjoy the heck out of it :) Kids + Jobs = 4% of my college level free time

Sid
@TheGreatEscaper Summer? You in the Southern Hemisphere?

4:17 PM
@Jim Nice, I think I heard about you when I was in internship at Dassault Systèmes

@Sid Australia, no less :)

Jim
Though kids have made me hyper efficient and a 4x better multi-tasker and have forced me to learn how to function on 2-3hrs of sleep. I'm practically half-cyborg by now, technically.

Lovely place, except it's midnight, I have my windows open, I'm shirtless, I'm not under blankets, and I'm still burning to death

Jim
@IAmInPLS Spread the word :) It's a fun company and it's made me very familiar with the lighting industry.

I'm not in a hurry to have kids hehe
@Jim Will do, will do!

Sid
4:19 PM
Yeah... 4 3s..

Australian summers have their ups and downs

Sid
@TheGreatEscaper Oh, you have no idea about real summers..

Jim
I reallllly want to visit Australia someday. I'm unsure if I can stomach the plane ride though.
Who are the Australians here again?

@Sid where are you?
Boboquack is also an Australian.
Friend of mine, actually.

Sid
@TheGreatEscaper Tropics. We live at almost 45 degree Celsius in Summers.

4:25 PM
Ouch! We reach mid 40s SOMETIMES. But it's never a pleasant event.

Sid
It's horrible. Mid 40s for two months at a stretch.

Oh dear.
I will say though that I prefer the extreme heat to extreme cold.
Extreme heat is like a discomfort to me. In extreme cold I can literally feel myself losing functionality.

Jim
It's probably -6C here today
And that's warm

Talk about diverse climates...

Jim
indeed

Sid
4:29 PM
-6? Oh dear. The lowest I have lived in is 6.

Jim
ha
I've probably hit the crossover point for C/F more than once this calendar year
think about THAT

I've never been subzero, I already hate the cold in the single digits

Jim
the single C digits?

Yup. (Shame on me, I know
I'm really weak with cold temperatures

I really prefer cold to hot

Jim
4:31 PM
I used to prefer cold to hot, but now I'm the opposite, I need to move

although cold starts being less fun below -10 or so

Jim
Though January in Minneapolis looks to be pretty balmy at an average around -5C according to the advanced forecasts

Sid
Well, I am happy to be in the tropics. Living at 19 degrees Celsius. Really pleasant.

Jim
Listen @Sid, nobody asked you ;)

that does sound pretty pleasant... 15-20 is pretty ideal

4:34 PM
Well Sidll

I'm just way happier at 0 than at 40

*Sid'll be copping it in the summers, soooo
I press enter early wayyyy too much.
I think my dislike for cold might have something to do with playing the piano
You really start losing your fine motor skills in extremeties as soon as it starts getting even just a little cold
Plus I think I have bad circulation, and that doesn't help.

my thing is, they make clothes that are a little bulky, but make low temperatures perfectly comfortable
there is not such a thing for high temperatures
although admittedly, fine motor skills are something I don't have at the best of times

Jim
speaking of puzzling and scolding, wait, no one was speaking about that
did anyone have an idea about the CCCC?

Sid
It is probably a cryptic definition..
But you never know.. Cryptics are strange stuff.

4:42 PM
I was trying to think of a strange way of scolding someone
But that's probably not it
I'm not very good with cryptics
Anyhow, it's almost 1am here, I should be getting some sleep...
Gnight PSE!

4:58 PM
@TheGreatEscaper Yes, it's very annoying, especially playing blindfolded.

Sid
@Mithrandir I don't know if you noticed, but I said that I would be interested in Clue 22.

Only 22?
But i marked you down

Sid
Any one that is..

Yep, ahve you already

Sid
But, I have a very short timeline though. From Jan 15-30.

Q: Logic problem about five thieves

JLDiazThe teacher of my nephew (15y) proposed the following puzzle to the students. I solved it, but I found it extremely difficult, in particular for teenagers. Perhaps there is a simpler solution than mine. Additionally, I suspect that the puzzle is not original, but I was unable to find one with t...

7:53 PM
anyone awake?

nope

Looking at the cryptic zoo rebuses. Found something significant for 9, but I can't seem to figure out where it fits
The image shows a SPIDER, and possibly a BACK. with a bunch of nonsense text.
But the last line of text is DUNKS AGAIN --> REDIPS Which is Spider back. But I don't know what to do with the rest.

Jim
8:11 PM
awake!
Okay, so I've never tried a logic problem in my entire life. So I just tried the five thieves one. I enjoyed it.

They can be fun.

Jim
8:27 PM
I liked it more than I thought I would. I'm generally not a logic puzzle person. I prefer stego and ciphers.

I'm not into the code puzzles. Too much like work.

Jim
What's work for you?

Work = moving something.

Jim
Got it!

Work =/= keeping something still while it's trying to move.

Jim
8:35 PM
@Mithrandir the possibilities are endless for your work

work = homework for me :P

I'm homeschooled, so no homework

Jim
@BeastlyGerbil Favorite classes?

I had a job for a while though

@Jim maths, tech, computing, pe.... Worst: RS and drama
I technically currently have two jobs. I volunteer to help coach squash and football to younger kids. Don't get paid though :P

8:43 PM
I'm a developer, and a Cub Scout volunteer.

I got pain 20 an hour

not bad

For biking around putting magnets on doors

although not sure about getting paid in pain ^^ ;)

I like biking

8:46 PM
I did. Too lazy now...

Jim
paid for pain eh
which puzzles are you all looking at/working on right now? I have a little free time.

None. I'm currently teaching myself to read braille...

Jim
That's something though

Well it'll make it easier to solve puzzles involving it :P

Jim
9:07 PM
Indeed it will

Oof. 10 left... (views)

Q: Time for Something New

Rubio Today, when you go to your mailbox, you find a thin card-sized envelope from your (in?)famous uncle—a games and puzzles creator of dubious skill and legendary absentmindedness, who you now reflect didn't send his usual holiday card. You open the envelope to find a simple card with colorful con...

9:14 PM
Oh looks interesting. How did I miss that?

@BeastlyGerbil It drowned in the flood of new puzzles.

More or less, yes. I beat the rush, not that it did any good.

Just to be clear - The letters are an instruction or algorithm, not a cypher.

9:44 PM
Morning
@Rubio beating the rush is kind of a bad thing isn't it?
My puzzle kind of drowned as well, which is a shame, because it's a riddle I put a lot of work into

10:40 PM
Hi all

Hey!

10:59 PM
So I see on meta, people still want a broken down puzzle(r) of the year...
@Deusovi - you mind starring that link so that it gets some visibility? Not much point having a discussion thread if no one sees it...

@Alconja Done!

11:30 PM
oh for the love of
@Will CROSSWORD. I love it.

:)

double def, AND intentional misreading. that "?" must be tired from all that overwork :)

Gah, I should've noticed that. I actually saw that a while ago and was planning to use it at some point in a puzzle

11:49 PM
@IAmInPLS Thanks :-) Yeah, I'm not too worried about downvotes. There are always some grumpy sods around, or people who vote for the person instead of the post.
@Techidiot I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.
the motto of PSE ^
@Will @Rubio Nice one!!

CCCC: Search for an ancient game containing a circle and one thousand left edges, initially. (6)

Apparently I earned two secret hats on PSE today completely by accident.

which 2?

Blue in the Face and The Hatter.

@Rubio GOOGLE

11:57 PM
explain?

(def: Search) for G[O]O (an ancient game containing a circle) and G (one thousand) LE (left edges, initially)

Damn, I was just about to type that up

L=left, [e]dges initially. both ways work.
You're up :)

@Deusovi Been a while since I've been in. It was my turn. :)

How does G = one thousand?

11:58 PM
Also "Search for" was all def

abbreviation for "grand"

In Roman numerals it's M.

money slang gives G, as in 10 Gees
