@A.Mirabeau I guess it's night at Pacific - isn't it ?

12:54 AM
It's 2am here in the UK. Pacific time is 8 hours different (except it may sometimes be 1h out because of differences in summer-time transition) so ~6pm.

Working as fast as I can, and using MSPaint as my only image generation tool. It may need to wait until tomorrow (that's a promise, though). All letter strings and puzzles are devised.

user189275
@Alconja Can you explain how interpreting like "numerical indicator" works ?

user230888
@A.Mirabeau As there is but difficulty communicating in time because of different zones, how much time more (in hours ?)

4:51 AM
@ArkaKarmakar as in each "key" gives something that has a fundamental numerical quality to it... Octopus -> eight legs -> eight. Square -> four sides -> four. Marriage -> two people -> two.

user230888
@Alconja The middle one may contain a red herring. You can pronounce "alternate third". Also, as Arka mentioned

user230888
previously, tile face is pyramid stone on edit history.

user230888
Whatever, it

user230888
is very probable the "of" is a part of the riddle, and the carbon is not.

user189275
5:10 AM
I am not on a computer, but someone should try 4 * 4 possibilities of blocking every third word starting from 1/2/3/no block and then reading 4 coupon downward

user189275
Coupon - column

user230888
" Sister attacking of fantasy " one found.

user230888
But what the heck is that ? Adding hotel is also fruitless. Fantasy where protagonists' sister is an attacker ? In a hotel ?

5:29 AM
@tpk Should be 12 or fewer.

Hi guys. I am new here. Thought this is a good place to ask about puzzle here. Can I ask about the 8 queens puzzle here?

What do you mean to ask? Perhaps some of these questions can be useful? puzzling.stackexchange.com/search?q=%5Bchess%5D+queens

7:57 AM
@morbidCode the 8 queens puzzle was already posted :
21
Q: How many queens can be on a chessboard without attacking each other?

XynarizWhat is the maximum number of queens that can be placed on a standard 8x8 chessboard such that no one of them is capable of attacking any of the others in a single move?

However, if you have a query on 8 queens puzzle which is not answered in the above question (or anywhere else) then it should be fine to ask here I think, provided that it is not too broad or bad for some other reason.
Am I right @Deusovi ?

8:43 AM
Thing is: I have read a solution to the 8 queens puzzle in an online book. And I don't understand how the solution given in the book works. I am hopping someone could explain the solution.

10:03 AM
@morbidCode What don't you understand about it? E.g., is it a computer program that generates solutions, and do you have trouble understanding the code? Or a description of an algorithm, and you have trouble understanding the description? Or a single configuration of queens, and you don't see why it works? Or what?
@morbidCode If it's a program and you don't understand it, Stack Overflow might be a better fit; asking here in chat might get you an answer -- quite a lot of people here are programmers, professionally or just for fun -- but SO would probably get you an answer faster and it would be kinda off-topic here. If it's an algorithm or an explicit solution or something of the kind, making it a question on puzzling.stackexchange.com might work or, if it's brief enough, you could ask here in chat.

10:46 AM
I really don't understand how no-one has got [my question] yet
It is related to sports
just added sports tag
An see the hint as well

11:29 AM
oh sid got it

Sid
@BeastlyGerbil I had guessed that before your hints.. I was looking for the other cities in it and how they would fit..
What was the point of the other cities in it??

I'm sorry @Sid, what are you asking?

Sid
How was it liverpool and Barcelona in 2016? Wasn't only Messi on the cover of fifa 16

It might differ, because there are different covers for different countries
Can I edit your answer to show the covers for the countries mentioned?

Sid
Yeah.. Feel free to do so..
ANyway, how is Jordan Henderson on that cover?? The guy doesn't even get on the starting lineup of liverpool..

11:39 AM
@Sid, who knows :P

After the video-game tag, I nearly ransacked the wikipedia article on FIFA series, but that doesn't contain even a single cover image. Dammit.

Maybe people got bored of messi and bale or ronaldo on the front cover so voted for henderson instead
@Ankoganit, unlucky :P

Sid
@Ankoganit You should have simply searched in google images
@Ankoganit Good work on that horseshoe riddle.... That was a good one... Although I can't help laughing at the 2nd answer of another user.

@Sid Thanks...:)

user230888
@A.Mirabeau How much ? I am very eagerly awaiting for the next Larry's.

user230888
11:54 AM
Labryca not Larry's

user230888
The things to be remembered: I. 42 is first cw inward then backward. 2. 45 downward on 5 x 5 grid, so is 50. 3. 48 backwards. 4. 49 cw inward, maybe twice. 5. The parasite grid is Oped and no q.

@BeastlyGerbil The covers remind me of that anagram: "Soccer players"="Score, leap, cry!"

@Ankoganit, never heard that one before :P

12:11 PM
@BeastlyGerbil You haven't! What a pity... (Shameless self-promotion: did I tell you that I have a blog, the subject of its latest post being angrams?)

12:26 PM
@GarethMcCaughan sorry for the late reply. I have trubble understanding the description to the algorithm. I will be translating it into a program afterwards, but write now I don't understand the description.

user230888
12:37 PM
Any idea on the bounty riddle ?

user230888
By jmb.mage ?

12:50 PM
@BeastlyGerbil I guessed it was related to sports after searching Google for a few of the combinations in the question, and so I stopped working on it :-)
@Gareth @Alconja or any other 10k users - more deletable questions: one, two.
@Ankoganit Nice!

I hate posts here which have nothing to do with puzzles...
People just need to read the page title

user230888
1:13 PM
@BeastlyGerbil Example ?

@tpk most of them have been deleted
But I can remember a question was recently asked here about breastfeeding.

@BeastlyGerbil this question is probably one of the few a person can excuse. They say breastfeeding can drain your brain - it is not really wrong :)
Talking from a personal experience :P
Being a new mother can literally make you lose your common sense :)
And be "puzzling" :)
I am sure the lady didn't even realise what site she was on - after all, parenting, puzzling, they all start with p and end with ing :)

Ping!

pong :P

Same deal :P

1:37 PM
@Randal'Thor Thanks!

I'm sad at the moment. I've had to scrap all my work towards my roulette part of my casino puzzle, and start again making it a lot more simple, as the gifs were ridiculously large. My last one was 30MB
Only 2MB can fit on SE
So the roulette wheel will be very basic indeed

If you lower the quality a bit would it still work?

No, I've tried multiple gif compressors and the minimum I can get it down to is 6MB
And by that point there is a ton of noise and distortion

@BeastlyGerbil You could always link to the gif on some off-site resource, like Avigrail did for this puzzle.

I could but the entirety of the rest of the puzzle is based on stack imgur, so don't want to break the flow

1:53 PM
@BeastlyGerbil you can cut the gif vertically several times and then put them one after the other in the puzzle - but I am unsure how this would look like in the end...

@BeastlyGerbil I bet it's not as much based on stack imgur as this puzzle was :-P

@Randal'Thor, weeelllllll, mine might just be. But that's because mine will be (I think) the first interactive puzzle on PSE

@BeastlyGerbil Hmm, might depend on what you mean by interactive. We've had s before, and several meta posts about them.

No its not semi interactive
Basically, say for blackjack, it will come up with an option in the gif Hit - (imgur address) or Stand - (imgur address) and you get to choose whether or not to hit or stand. Hit will lead to a gif of you getting another card and stand you will see your opponents cards
So by interactive I mean you get to 'play' blackjack and roullette while also solving the puzzle
@Randal'Thor, would simulated gambling be all right here? You don't actually bet anything and you don't get a prize for winning.

@BeastlyGerbil I don't see why not. After all, we already have a sort of simulated money system in SE rep. But if you're worried about it, better ask on meta.

2:07 PM
I already posted a puzzle that contained a static slot machine. But for "live" ones - not really sure.

I just don't want to have spent 3 months of my life making a puzzle to find out that it will be closed and deleted
I think I will ask on meta
It should be all right as it involves no money, you just play with nothing at stake

@BeastlyGerbil You could just reduce the dimensions.. or drop every second frame...

@Alconja I think it would be easier just to shorten it. For instance the ball goes round once not twice around the wheel

Yeah. I had to take some shortcuts to keep file size down when I did this one

2:49 PM
One of my favourite puzzles that one
Can I ask what you used to make the gif or images? The graphics are very good

@morbidCode Is the description somewhere online?

all done in photoshop (discovered there were animation tools in there when I did the eyes in "you approach the door")

Wow, you must be a pro on photoshop
I create separate images and put them together using an app

:) a hobbiest for many years

I've never been able to understand photoshop myself

2:55 PM
Definitely a steep learning curve
Had to learn a bit of illustrator for the one i'm going to post this week
Has a bunch of vector based art and i couldn't get photoshop to smooth the curves for me

ooooh, I've been waiting for another biggie from Alconja
I've already mentally upvoted it

:) hopefully it lives up to expectations then

Considering your average puzzle upvote total is around 70, it probably will
@Alconja, after doing some calculations you have received 962 upvotes on just 22 questions. That is an incredible average of 44 upvotes per question.
If your next question meets that average you'll break the 1000 upvotes barrier

Sid
3:14 PM
Is there any doubt that he will break the 1000 barrier?? The question is who is second on the list of most upvoted questions...

Hmmm, don't know
Maybe @Randal'Thor?

I dunno, Gamow still has more questions than I do (but fewer answers).

I saw that edit :P
And the upvotes I mentioned for @Alconja, were only on questions
Alconja is definitely the best puzzlemaker on this site

By average question score, almost certainly.
Gamow may have exceeded his total though, just by virtue of having a lot more questions.

Wonder what his average was

3:22 PM
Data.SE will tell you, if you know how to use it.

Nope :P

@Randal'Thor Most prolific users
That tells you who has the most questions / answers, but not score.

Woo I'm on the list :P

user189275
@Alconja: Just saying, are you now making any epic puzzles ? Long since you posted one. (Excluding the quickies)

@ArkaKarmakar, assuming so based on the fact it involves vector based art

user189275
3:34 PM
@BeastlyGerbil: May be not puzzle related. But hope so :-)

@ArkaKarmakar, the problem is whenever he does post an epic, I can never solve them :P

user189275
@BeastlyGerbil: This is applicable to almost all of the users here, obviously including me. I wonder why he isn't replying, may be he wants to keep it secret.

@ArkaKarmakar or he's simply offline

@ArkaKarmakar Or maybe he's just AFK. Not everyone is permanently in SE chat :-P
@BeastlyGerbil ninja'd

user189275
@Randal'Thor: What is AFK ?

3:38 PM
@ArkaKarmakar Away From Keyboard.
Or if you're @RosieF, "Am Famished. Kitchen."

oops wrong link

@Randal'Thor Ah ! Fully Keep (quiet)

Sid
How to use the TM trademark in those word puzzles?

@Sid You mean how to get the symbol? I always just copy and paste it from a previous puzzle.

I generally find another one and click edit then copy it
@Randal'Thor, ninja'd
your turn :P

3:43 PM
Wow, @Beastly and I keep ninja'ing each other :-D

And again :P

Sid
Yeah, that works as well

@Randal'Thor, great minds think alike
and at the same speed
So it looks like I'll be able to post my casino puzzle?

Yes, I posted it on stackoverflow already. The solution is on the question. The second answer provides an example on how the solution works, but I don't understand some of it and he's not responding anymore.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/39637694/n-queens-puzzle-solution-cannot-understand/39666267#39666267
Here are some things I'm confused regarding the second answer.
1. What does he mean by illegally-placed queen? Because I thought if the queens are in the same row, the same column (as in the case with the first scratch pad) and diagonal, it's already illegally-placed.

4:17 PM
Almost tempted to ask someone to downvote me :-P

Just downvote 2 posts
Take a screenshot
Then remove the downvotes

@BeastlyGerbil SPAM.
6 spam flags will delete and lock it.

Flagged
I'm not even sure what its trying to promote

I already reported it in Charcoal HQ, which will help it to disappear quicker.

Sid
Illuminati, do they even exist?? I thought they were fictional stuff

They are...
Sometimes I think that SE is slow to react to things...

4:57 PM
whether they exist or not has not be proven yet - as far as I know.

now its deleted

Then I got distracted by this wall-o'-text on SFF:

Sometimes I find it funny how people spend an age writing some spam and then it gets deleted within seconds

Sid
Yeah, Apparently they have lots of time..

They probably write the same piece of spam and then post it in hundreds of different places.

5:02 PM
@Randal'Thor, if there was another mod election would you run in it? You missed the recent one

I was clearing out spam comments on the SFF blog earlier. Most of them took the form of some non-specific and usually complimentary sentence ("you're so awesome, this is really well-written") followed by a link to whatever was being promoted.

5:16 PM
@BeastlyGerbil Well, for the moment I'm quite satisfied with being a mod on one site and the top user on another :-)

Would be tricky as a mod of two

There are some people who mod two or four or even seven different SEs.

They must have a lot of sparetime

Sid
5:51 PM
Just posted a new puzzle. Anyone care to check it out??

@Sid, right-wing , something to do with planes?

4 hours later…
10:21 PM
@ArkaKarmakar (sorry laptop ran out of batteries and I went to bed) I'm going to post a new bigger one this week. Not really particularly "epic", probably a fair bit easier than some of my other ones, but certainly "polished"...
Just need to finish one bit, and there's another part I'm not 100% satisfied, so trying to find a way to rework it a little.
@BeastlyGerbil, @Randal'Thor, @Sid - here's the list of highest average question score by user, but it's a bit skewed by users who were effectively "one hit wonders", so if you filter out the outliers, you get this list

even though it only has 13 regions, two of which don't even have numbers, and these regions are both huge and don't cover all the squares on the grid
I did it in about 24 minutes
anyone want to take a crack at it?
