01:00 - 18:0018:00 - 00:00

6:00 PM
16 is ASSET.

12's bound to be AMUSE

14 is POLLUTE

@Beastly 2 is wrong :)

Aaah No, I thought frying pan - egg had to be write! :P

I think 4 is "shout" and 7 is "repeat". (They have no length, so miss the definition of "real" cryptic clues.)

6:08 PM
I was trying to decide if egg was more or less likely than 8 being sprat, because they both clearly couldn't be right

You are on the right way for both :) almost there :)

5 might be Jeanne, except that she was standing before the d'Arc.

Hi Juan

@JuanCamiloCamachoBeltrán Welcome! :-)

6:12 PM
lets just say Juan

2 is Ego?

Correct dcfyj :)

I only figured that out because I'm building a grid for @BeastlyGerbil in Excel :P

Oh thanks :P
I was going to do that when i had all the answers

I know I'm not going to get these, so I may as well make it pretty

6:15 PM
Is there a way I can give you the grid?

hmm, if 13 is Boston, and 15 is sea-x, then the ending of the big thing is almost certainly 'TheBest'

1 is Monkey!

Of course!

guessing the highlighted row is YouAreTheBest
11 can be hellos

I spot "You are the best" :)

6:17 PM
11 is almost right :) a letter wrong

HELIOS

Helios?

Correct :)

bah, I think hellos fits the clue better, but fine

13 is Boston

6:18 PM
yeah, I said that earlier, 12 is amuse too

oh, didn't see that haha

I think Beastly can't keep up editing :)

You're falling behind @BeastlyGerbil

15 is SEASON

nice

6:20 PM
ahh, good one
I think 10 might be era
and 8 trap
*strap

7 is REPEAT

9 might be POLOSHIRT when Polo is the mint rings.
And 5 ARCHER

9 is something else

No I just had dinner

oh I didn't see you say repeat here and those darn grace periods confuse the heck out of the reload functionality

6:24 PM
9 could maybe be cowboyhat?

I would say 9 is sweatshirt, but it doesnt fit :(

Yeah, it cant be something SHIRT when 10 is ERA
Now I'm guessing something HAT

BTW I'll credit after when I've caught up

@BeastlyGerbil Sconibulus got Boston before I did

Okay, Ill make a note
Just 6 and 9 left

6:29 PM
'a hole, often' could maybe be Caldera?
for 6
and 9 is almost certainly a punny 6 letter hat

No, it is not Caldera
And no hat :)

could be a coat of some sort
sugarcoat?

And it is not "a hole, often" It is "A whole of 10. !"

oh, sugarcoat, that's it

Correct :) Now only 6 is left

6:31 PM
yeah, 'a hole, often' was an interpretation of how to read it

I know :)

cholera?

I keep thinking Plethora, but it doesn't fir, and it's the wrong letter >.<

A winner! @Will

I don't get it.

6:32 PM
I don't either

10.
as in the crossword clue 10.

Well, the solution to 10 is ERA and Whole sounds a bit like "Chol-"

That's why it has a dot

yeah, but how is cholera any better than any other word containing 'era'

See I read cholera as call-eh-rah
not cho-leh-ra
I never would've gotten that lol

6:34 PM
wait is 6 cholera

it is

It's probably a very aspirated H pronunciation in whole and a similar pronunciation with cholera. (It's just a guess, but as a non-native English speaker I often get homophones terribly wrong because I map to sounds of my language.)

Added Image

That's what happened here - in my language it sounds like this. So I didn't realise it would be read as k actually.

Right now I'll try and credit, tell me if I get it wrong

6:38 PM
@BeastlyGerbil If you want to add numbers to the image go for it.

Well, the message is intended for all of you :)

huzzah for second persons singular and plural being identical
(barring regional variations)

Actually, my original intention was indeed to be for all of the community here, not just the solver :)
So, if there were differences in singular and plural, I would have used the plural version :)

my initial thought for you doing the 10.! was "guys, I know I'm using a number and an explanation point, but please don't take the factorial, it's a waste of your time"

same

6:45 PM
Credited all now, think I got it right

Well, factorial didn't even cross my mind. :) But I just wanted to make it clear that it is not just the number 10

Why not? That's a common way of cross-referencing (and misdirection) in crosswords.

Well, even with the dot, it was still not too obvious. :)

Q: Is the distinction too subtle between downvoting and voting to close?

humnQ1 (rhetorical). What distinguishes these three things? A downvote A vote to close A vote to remain closed I’m beginning to wonder if we really know, and am beginning to suspect that we sometimes mistakenly use the ability to vote for closure as an amped up ability to downvote and to usurp th...

I can't wait until next month (probably) when I can abuse my new close voting powers

6:52 PM
Its important for the site you don't always VTC though. Remember that

The middle of hello. The end of how. Are you.

@TheBitByte ?

low?

L W R U?

@BeastlyGerbil That was just a fake puzzle to introduce myself to the chat. XD

7:00 PM
The worse ways to do so here :P

The + bit + bit*8 is here
@BeastlyGerbil ^^ here it is

But what if they're actually a horse biting a bit?

hmm, I wonder how hard it is to make something look like a cipher that actually isn't

sometimes happens in rot 13...

A short puzzle: "Find me. What am I?"

7:04 PM
reminds me of a puzzle of this kind.

or better yet... something that actually is a cipher, but only secondarily

It is possible to cipher something so it is english bu the key is usually then goobledygook

No love for my little puzzle? :(

@TheBitByte Hiding?

@Sconibulus Nope.
Incorrect.

7:06 PM
I

Lost :)

Haha.
The answer is very simple.

The answer is obviously 42

Nope.
The answer is a word, not a number.
The answer is in the question.

@TheBitByte, that was a little joke

7:08 PM
me

Enough hints for today. :D

@Sconibulus Steganography?

@BeastlyGerbil I know, I know, but it's wrong, were it an answer...

no, you're not me, I'm me

7:09 PM
Wow, way to literally objectify me.

@TheBitByte It can't be wrong, it's the answer to life, the universe, and everything ^^

I am deeply offended

@dcfyj Well, on a more serious note, the answer is directly inside the question...

Hi deeply offended, I'm Will.

If it is not me, it should be I. If it is neither...I am lost. lol

7:11 PM
@RosieF not exactly... I'm working on turning it into a puzzle, so I'm not going to say anything more for a bit

@MariaDeleva Only one answer, please.

actually, are puzzles allowed to be relatively untagged until solved if figuring out what type of puzzle they are is half the fun?

@TheBitByte, well I already gave the two answers above separately.

@MariaDeleva Well, which one of the two do you choose?

@Sconibulus [enigmatic-puzzle]

7:12 PM
"I"

Nope.

"Me", since you declined "I" before.

puzzle

I vote this puzzle as too broad :P
2

Yes. That is it!
Another short puzzle: "Do not find me. I am here. What am I?"

7:13 PM
here

Correct.
Another short puzzle: "Do not find me. I am not here. There, I am that. What am I?"

Nope.

There

Yes!

7:15 PM
If it were that, that'd be neither here nor there.

Another short puzzle: "You do not find me. I find you. What are you?"

The answer

Being stalked, apparently.

Nope.

A short cipher that should be easy to decrypt: "KBSCPLKNABSVKLDPJHZDVIHIWPHSOPZWPUQQGJKLNFGQAJSWBKVXAMZQBLLHNHWWNORYDVZOAQTGWUL‌OHDVHMYOWXHJRHTJALRTSCPTPOUGCTOHOAFJQHCTGGYQCCUVPSMDFDCJEMHISUVNZCESAULDUXODGASAI‌QQVGWLXFQSGEECPAZQKIRVYYRUEDOBXVRHHFXBEZQRVLHTWLZQTVKCLPWDIHSEGLJZ"

7:16 PM
:P
The answer is 42. :P

@BeastlyGerbil I see, but nope.

@LukasRotter Code: What (not) to do :P

VTC as very low quality :P

@dcfyj I've included many hints you're just not seeing.

@LukasRotter Automated answer is "C LKGBJCSXLKPCJNBFQVNPMQMHBQKTBVHBWZZUFCJSIUZXFKHLCPYXEVZLJJQSQHHSTRONPVTXZDUHWJ?‌TQNPQE OTHYQFRQDFXJRDKGBDBTWUGDTQTXIFZQGDUUOZGGWPBKENING FAEQMKWPSVGAKXWJNWYTNUXKXM?ZZPUHJYIZKUAAGBXVZCMRPOOR WANTLY PRQQIYLAVZRPJQDHJVZDPCGJBHNMQKAUJFV"
Do you have some clues?

7:19 PM
vigenere

That explains why it's not rot1-25

@LukasRotter Number of chars in passphrase/key?

Try it and find out

I just uploaded an image to imgur and the last 3 letters are TLC :P

@TheBitByte The number of chars starts with 4-2. I'm not saying anything more :) I'll put this cipher as my chat user description now. Really wondering why it hasn't been solved by now.
Damn it... 30 characters too much

7:27 PM
Nominated this question for reopening. Seems clear enough now

It looks like he wants our opinion on it.

@BeastlyGerbil How is this a puzzle which deserves to be on this site (as opposed to on the site where it is already)?

@RosieF, he's just raising awareness on this site, and seeing if we can solve it

7:51 PM
@LukasRotter ... am tempted to ask "What is Lukas Rotter's second secret?"

That would be an ironic twist considering that's my highest voted answer.
actually, my highest voted anything

@Will It's up to you :P I'll say that much: It's not a complete hoax, it is a ciphertext that actually corresponds to the plain-text I intended with a certain key... But finding that key is "a little bit" hard, I would say.
I wouldn't do it unless you want a -58 score question :P.
Let me replace "a little bit hard" with "inappropriate for a Puzzling website".

8:13 PM
I don't even want to know, do I?

@LukasRotter That would be a new record for Puzzling, I think.
What was the score of "The Traveller and the Blood-Thirsty Troll" before it was deleted?

give me 700 rep and I'll tell you

@Will "Inappropriate" like in "solver woulde have to make an unreasonable amount of effort for a site that revolves around Puzzling. The key cannot be determined by just analyzing the puzzle itself". Sorry, I just realized now how ambiguous my last statement was.
@Will If my latest puzzle doesn't get solved within 5 days I might put a 500 bounty on it :P

@Will I found it. Question score -16 (+21/-37); accepted answer score -22 (+7/-29); other answer scores 45, 35, 25, 16, 15, ...

giving bounties doesn't really help in solving :)

8:19 PM
@LukasRotter My first thought on that was Friedrich = Kasiski but that got me nowhere

What was this question about?

@MariaDeleva It helps in motivation. Which, frankly, is all that's needed at this point. I'm pretty sure I know at least the general direction of the solution method; I'm just too lazy to actually do it :-P

There. I decided how I'm doing Clue Thirteen.

@Randal'Thor Exactly why bounties are needed :P For harder questions most people are just like "Meh. Not worth it"

8:21 PM
@MariaDeleva Which one? Lukas's, or the Traveller and the Blood-Thirsty Troll?

@Mithrandir, bring it on!

The traveller
:) I am curious what puzzle was so hated :)

@BeastlyGerbil After Diamond 2 :P

@Mithrandir, bring them both on! :P

Can I add an additional bounty on a question or do I have to wait until the previous bounty expires?

8:22 PM
@MariaDeleva The question isn't too bad in itself:
It actually got lots of upvotes at first, and only went down into the cellar after the following answer was accepted:

Where is this?

Only visible to 10kers

@BeastlyGerbil Here, but you need another 4k rep to see it.

8:25 PM
I'm on my way there at least

(I need 7.6k still :P)

Basically have 6k, should get 10k by christmas

@Randal'Thor thank you! :)

But at least I have 10k in chat :P
So I can handle flags :D
(Okay I'm ridiculous.)
(Can you see that 10.1k over there yet?) :P

Yep.

8:29 PM
There it is!

It's about 1/10th of mine :-)
Ignore the decimal point ...
... and there's that rumour again!
Mythical Rand :-P

More damning evidence

My top three sites = your top three sites
Rand's been on SE at least 2 months longer.

That was before he created his second account

@Mithrandir Only 2 months?

8:31 PM
is watching the Many Memes of scifi.stackexchange question
@Randal'Thor Yup

Ah, because you were around SE for a while before you started getting really into it.

Exactly.

Well, so was I.
I remember the days when I had 300 rep on SFF and 100 rep on a few other sites, and thought it was far too ambitious to even try to get a few hundred more anywhere.
Then whoops! a few thousand rep on Puzzling.

I remember when I had 6 on SFF and 22 on Mi Yodeya...

And I remember when I thought it was far too ambitious to ever reach the cap, let alone 200 times (was it 200 times for that badge?)

8:34 PM
I've reached the cap 4 times on the whole network...
I think.

But it happened once even to me, so obviously it is possible

Two here, two SFF?
Nope, three on SFF.

So, only 198 left for both. :)
197 then

I've had it happen twice, once here, once SFF, but never Arqade, where most of my rep comes from

8:36 PM
@MariaDeleva 150 times for the Legendary badge.

Ah, ok. So I am mistaken then.

Even I've only made it 63 times here on Puzzling.

"only"

So, half-way through - another year or so, and your badge is there

It's nearing midnight now.
Gonna get some shut-eye.
See ya guys later.

8:38 PM
Night @Mithrandir!
I'm going AFK for a bit too.

@Mithrandir where are you from? We are in the same timezone :)

Me too

9:06 PM
...crap, Affine is only actually a monoalpha cipher when a is coprime with the alphabet

9:21 PM
Would a puzzle tagged with be considered bad if a part of it required a brute-force attack?

I wouldn't be a fan of it, but maybe someone else would like it.
Probably depends on specifics.

@Deusovi Ok, then I'll probably include clues hinting to the solution of that part, so brute-force is not required, but obviously an option.

That sounds a lot better! Brute-forcing is an option in several types of puzzles.

Should I still tag it with if it's only an option?

Up to you.

9:44 PM
@Emrakul Why was this puzzle deleted? (I'm guessing plagiarism, but without an explanatory comment, it could be anything up to and including a mistake!)

@Randal'Thor Yep, plagiarism.
Several of that user's questions were plagiarized.

I just came across it because another puzzle links to it, and a new puzzle has just been posted which is a duplicate of that second puzzle.

Hm, I don't think it's a duplicate.
Not of that one, anyway.
It's a dupe of this one:
10
Q: A self-referring number

AngkorFind a ten-digit number with the number of zeros in it as the most significant (leftmost) digit, the number of ones as the second most significant digit etc.

@Deusovi Understood. Might be a good idea to drop a comment though, so that others who come across that question will know why it was deleted.
> Whenever possible, try to leave frequent comments on posts where you've taken (or considered taking) a moderator action, explaining the reasoning. This is important so that community members can learn the norms of the community and the moderation policies.

@Randal'Thor Done!
I think Emrakul was handling a ton of posts at that time, and didn't have enough time to leave comments.

9:48 PM
@Deusovi Definitely a dupe of that one, but isn't that one also a dupe of the one I found?

I think they're different, but they have a similar idea behind them.

The presentation is different (a list of 10 digits rather than a 10-digit number), but the idea is the same. Unless I'm missing something, of course.

The list includes the numbers 0-9 once already.
The 10-digit number does not.
Meaning if you want to convert a solution, you have to add one to everything, which changes the number of digits of each kind...

Aha! You're right, that does make a difference.

Also, the one you linked allows multi-digit numbers.

9:51 PM
I guess when I make a puzzle about a game I have to directly site a download link? Or can I just let the solver figure the game out? :P

@Deusovi Ah, there's one multi-digit solution and one single-digit solution. I read the answer too quickly and thought that the solution given at the very end was the only one.

@LukasRotter I think you can just let the solver figure it out (as long as it's solvable, of course!)
I've gotta go, but first, an interesting excerpt from the analytics page:
Apparently that search term led someone to Puzzling.
Anyway, I'm afk for now. Later!

We are obviously tarmac experts

@Deusovi SFF keeps getting spam from concrete companies in China.
Go figure.

10:27 PM
@Deusovi You still alive?
Does any of you modest people know how I can upload my 3D model to stackExchange so I can delete it from my dropbox account?

@Avigrail Does the usual stack.imgur image attachment thing not work?

I'm not trying to upload images but I can give it a shot

I think the only kind of file attachments that SE supports are images (jpg, png, gif, etc.)

Limited to 2MB which will not be met :P

I wanted to upload a PDF once, but there was no way to do it. I needed (in fact, still need) to take a bunch of screenshots of the PDF and upload them individually.

11:06 PM
@Avigrail - what about archive.org? (archive.org/about/faqs.php#Uploading_Content)

Back!

Good hint. Thanks Alco

11:31 PM
